The neighborhood center used to be an elementary school. When the city was shutting the school down, local mothers organized to try and keep it open. When they were defeated, they tried to buy the school. The city had intended to sell the property extremely cheaply to a developer, but had an immense asking price when the mothers said they wanted to buy. When the mothers raised it, they doubled the price. The mothers, with amazing neihgborhood support, raised it again. The city was pressured to sell the school, and finally did, at the well over market-price. The neighborhood center has been a bastion of radical community organizing, youth empowerment, and community education ever since.
