Click (or tap) on map cell to obtain some effect. Usually it gives you one of resources. Sometimes you will see context menu with additional actions.

You can establish your own settlement by clicking on free grass fields and pressing the corresponding button 
. Click on a settlement gives an income from
several random tiles around it. Moreover it increase effect of clicking on nearest cell for some time. Also, you can build some resource farming building near the settlement.
Instead of resources there are goods in the game.
Goods belong to settlements (max 3 per a settlement) and give and additional abilities. For example, presence of marble 
in the settlement
increase its speed of upgrading.
Goods are produced by some buildings like career or tarry.
