"May God... grant you likewise the gift of surpassing in knightly excellence all the knights living today. And much of your fate I know."
<b> The Red and White Knight</b> is an Interactive Fiction heavily based around Medieval Arthurian Literature, especially the Vulgate Cycle and Le Morte D'Arthur. Here, you play as Lancelot Du Lac from their beginning as a knight to their death.
Your home under the waves with your mother and her companions is all you've ever known. It is not the life you saw for yourself, however. You knew your calling lied outside the Fairy Realms. Now, you are leaving your home with only a red and white shield to identify you, to make your renown as a Knight of the Round Table.
The life of a Knight of Camelot is not an easy one. In a land moving in and out of the Fairy Realms, time and morality do not work the same. You'll soon find that magic and death are embedded into Camelot's very foundation.
You may not yet know your name, but you know Camelot's fate is tied to yours.

This story will contain violence, blood, a cavalier treatment of death and murder, kidnapping, drugging, possible suicide, and references to sexual assault and incest. EDIT
There will be many references to violence and mild gore in some desciptions as Lancelot is a medieval knight who will be getting into duels and battles throughout the story.
In the culture of this world, death an murder are treated with a bit more lightheartedness and general lack of severity most of the time. There will of couse be exceptions to this but this kind of attitude will come up around many of the characters being dismissive or even joking about murder. Lancelot, and many of the other characters, will themselves kill people in the story.
Lancelot will be kidnapped several times in the story, especially in Morgan and Sybil's routes. Guinevere will also be kidnapped for more sinister reasons at the end of book 1.
In a section in the later half of book 1, Lancelot will be drugged and violated by another character, Elaine of Corbenic. This will be very reminescent of sexual assault (as it was explicitly rape originally) and Lancelot will have many choices on how to react to it. There will be some mentions of Igraine's rape by Uther which produced Arthur, as well as references to Morgan's dubious consent in her marraige. Guinevere's kidnapping at the end of book 1 will be with the intent to force her into marraige. These references will have different reactions by different characters who do not always treat this with sensitivity.
Mordred is (likely) concieved due to Arthur and Morgause having an affair before they realized they were siblings. You're happy to be back home as you sit down on the bank of The Lake. Even though you hadn't been gone long, you couldn't deny homesickness had started to reach you. Ever since you had finally reached adulthood, Vivian had become more comfortable letting you travel around the surrounding forests. It was nice to experience the world above water and to meet the people who lived around the lake. Vivian also said it was good for you to get used to being in the Human Realms.
The Lake sparkled as you kick your feet in it, waiting for Vivan to arrive. You can feel the beating sun on your <<nobr>>

You don't really know why she summoned you back early from your most recent journey, but you suspect it has something to do with the dreams you've been having more and more often. Dreams of a distant kingdom in ruin. Knights in the thousands killing each other with no honor or sense. Blood and death and mayhem all around. It's become so constant that you sometimes struggle to sleep now. You've taken to sleeping whenever you can because of it. Even if that means collapsing for a nap in the forest. It's only gotten you taken by fairies a couple times so you consider it worth it.
You break out of your daydreaming as you hear Vivian call your name.

"It's good to see you too. Have you been well? How is everyone doing back in the lake? Has Sybil visited recently?"
Vivian laughs at your eagerness as she cups your face gently, "One question at a time dearest. I'll be happy to answer after you tell me how you're doing. How have your nightmares been?"
You wince at the mention of your nightmares. They started a few years ago when you were 15. They hadn't been too bad then, occuring pretty rarely and with little detail. They started to get worse the past year though. More frequent and far more detailed. Blood, death, and destruction scattered all over your vision whenever you slept. You finally bring yourself out of your thoughts to reply,
[["They haven't been too bad recently," You try to lie. You don't want to upset her.]]
[["They haven't been too bad recently," You try to lie. Its really isn't a big deal. You've started growing numb to them.]]

<</if>><<if $DreamLie is false>> "I'm sorry dear," she frowns before smiling again again, "Luckily I have some good news about how to stop your nightmares."
<</if>>
You perk up at this. You and Vivian have been trying to figure out a way to stop them for months, with no results time and time again. You had started to just give up and accept you would have to live like this for the rest of your life. It's a relief to know Vivian might have finally found a way, though you cant help but be slightly unsure.
"Your nightmares are trying to draw you somewhere, to lead to where these dreams are to take place. I fear they will only get worse as you get older and spend more time away from where fate wants you." Well. That isn't very comforting to learn. As you look at Vivian you see that whatever happiness she felt at finding the solution to your pain has quickly gone, whick only makes you more nervous.
"Where... where is this place I have to journey?" You ask warily, preparing for the worst. What if you're going to be sent far away, to some unknown land you could not return from? Perhaps you will have to go back to your birthplace of Benoic and face your parents murderer! Maybe... maybe you even have to go to the <b>//Otherworld//</b> itself. "But I-I only just got home! And you're sending me away already? To //Camelot//? Logres stood by as my parents were murdered and usurped and now you want me to just waltz into their Capitol?!"
Vivan could only smile wanely at your outburst. It was clear she was no more happy about this than you were, but there was little she could do unless you wished to spend the rest of your life barely functioning from your mental torment.
"It will be nothing quite so simple as that, dear. I will not let you into their home without some security. Which is why you'll be going as an unknown." It was clear she had been thinking this out for awhile now. Using your time away from the lake to figure how best to start your adventure.
"You shall not reveal your name until your know yourself. You shall not reveal your name until you //know// your name." What did that mean? Before you have time to ask, she is speaking again.
"If they ask you of your lineage, do not reveal it, not yet. I will send you with a token of mine, so they will know your connection to me, but nothing else. If you must, merely say you are the child of Elaine. It is a common name, and will not give much away." Elaine. The name of the mother you never got to know. Now the only name you could hold onto.
You don't remember much of your birth mother, Queen Elaine. You were a baby when King Ban was usurped. Sometimes you think you see glimpses of her though, in you happier dreams, in your own reflection. Vivian says you share the same <<nobr>>

<<goto ThankYouMom>>Chapter One
All you can do is look at the lake. At the place that had been your home for almost your whole life. A home your might not see for a long time. You were on your way to be a knight of Camelot now. Following a foreign ruler in a foreign land...
Arthur. He is he king you're going to live under now. Vivian had told you a bit about him. A young boy when he became king, spirited away as a baby by Merlin (an acquaintance of The Lady, if not a friend). Only to then become king after pulling a sword from a stone. That had been a decade ago. You were too young to see his coronation. Vivain had gone though, as a fairy representative. It had been the longest she had ever been away from The Lake in your memory.
They say he is a fierce warrior, and proven conqueror. It was within his first few years as king, as a boy no older than 15, that he defeated the other lords of the Isle and reconquered his fathers kingdom. It seems like he isn't stopping there either. King Arthur has already moved troops into parts of (Norway) and Gaul. His conquering was not always spoken with amazment. Many others speak of how his obsession with battle has made him neglectful on his own kingdom. That he pushes the responsibilities of ruling to his wife and Seneschal and lets his knights roam wild.
You have not heard as much about his new wife though. Only some minor details. Her name is Guinevere and she's a princess from Cameliard. She led the May Day celebrations so often before and after her marraige that "May Queen" has become simply another title for her. It was her father who gifted Arthur with his now famous Round Table as a wedding gift. You have no tales of what she is like as a queen though. Only of her beauty and her penchant for merryment.
And the knights... You often hear of the feats achieved by his knights, though their names often escape you. You're going to be joining these knights soon.
Would you even be able to simply join from Vivian's word alone? You cannot reveal your lineage or even your name. You comba experience doesn't go beyond minor skirmishes! You have no idea what is ahead.
[[You feel a bit scared. You're going to leave your home for an unknown land.]]
[[You feel a bit unsure. Happy to go on new adventures, but nervous about what Camelot might entail.]]
[[You feel a bit excited. Adventure, quests, and a whole new land to see!]]

<<goto endingpage>><<goto endingpage>><<goto endingpage>>Thank you for reading! I am SO sorry this little revision took so long to get out. I included the first page of chapter 1 as a little extra though it is a rough draft so there is likely more typos in it. I plan of revising the chapter as a whole once it's finished.
I hope to have chapter 1 will be out by the end of August or beginning of September
Thank you for reading again!!
