Born during a planetary alignment, the Oracles of the Starways decreed your arrival to be a sign of divine prophecy, one that would shake the foundations of humanity and raise House Eros above all others.
Your mother, Rebecca, embraced the Starway’s dogma with fervorous passion, and always believed you would rise to become greater than any person could, while your father ignored the comments as superstitious babble of the ignorant and insane.
You…
[[1. …embraced this ideology->Vacation]]
[[2. …ignored it->Vacation]]
[[3. …felt burdened by it->Vacation]]
At a young age, you recognized that your life was not normal. Turris Eros and its hundred acre grounds were equal parts home and prison. During your youth, hundreds of staff stood ready for your beck and call while the Novaɡärd kept a watchful eye on your every move. Your only moments of solace from the estate grounds were spent:
[[1. None - You spent your time reclusively at the palace, among the endless tomes in the library.->FeelingsTowardFather]]
[[2. Vacationing at your mother’s parents' estate on the moons of Apollo.->FeelingsTowardFather]]
[[3. Racing hoverbikes in the Herotian desert with your father’s brother, Duke Marcus.->FeelingsTowardFather]]
During your youth, while you and your mother spent nearly every day together, the earlier memories of your father were rather sparse.
His cold and stoic demeanor left little time for love. Even though you both inhabited the same palace, there were months at a time where you didn’t see him at all.
Your most common memories of him during these times were of him surrounded by his counselors in the war room deliberating how to handle the latest emergency, mingling and entertaining other government leaders, and seeing him on holovids meeting with constituents in another sector.
You…
[[1. …resented him for his lack of attention to you->SchoolChoice]]
[[2. …understood the House took precedence over you->SchoolChoice]]
[[3. …didn’t care that you barely saw him->SchoolChoice]]
Months leading up to your eighteenth birthday, your mother and father sat you down.
While risky, they both agreed that to see your potential as the future head of the House, you needed a galactic-view. The only way to obtain that was to send you off for training outside of House Eros’s territories.
Your mother wished for you to train at Soulburn Temple with Oracles of the Starway. Your father suggested Morris Military Academy. However, both agreed that this was your decision. After weeks of indecision, you finally chose to:
[[1. …train at Soulburn Temple with Oracles of the Starway->CultureShock][$school to "soulburn"]]
[[2. …train at Morris Military Academy->CultureShock][$school to "morris"]]
[[3. …study at the Krieger School of Business and Economics->CultureShock][$school to "krieger"]]
[[4. …study at the Beckett Institute of Art->CultureShock][$school to "becket"]]
[[5. …study at Albon Institute of Technology->CultureShock][$school to "albon"]]
Your first week was a complete culture shock. You’d never seen so many young people gathered in such a small place. There were no servants to address your needs, nor the constant shadows following you around. For the first time, you were completely alone.
Secrecy was paramount to your arrival. You had to remain under a false name. Revealing your true identity would put your life in danger. But becoming someone else also brought a sense of freedom. You could finally be who you wanted to be.
[[1. It was a challenge you embraced.->DiversityQuestion]]
[[2. You missed the comforts of home.->DiversityQuestion]]
People were central to your time away from home. Everyone you met was unique in their own ways, and very few came from your family’s owned sectors. Your classmates came from all walks of life. Many wore their cultures on their person through lavish outfits or adornments. Social groups gathered around their shared identities. You took the opportunity to…
1. [[…embrace the diversity to learn all you could->FeelingAboutWar]]
2. [[…ignore it. You didn’t have time for extra-curricular activities->FeelingAboutWar]]
3. [[…found your own group to gather like-minded individuals->FeelingAboutWar]]
After an initial adjustment period, each day brought a new revelation. You were not sure if it was purposeful, but your overprotective upbringing kept you ignorant of the galaxy around you. You found it was in a worse state than you expected.
War was as constant as breathing. Even your own sectors dealt with constant infighting as the Dukes under your House's banner fought for inches of territory endlessly locked in civil war.
Ship-to-ship skirmishes littered entire sectors with metal graveyards. Border disputes between governments left entire planets irradiated and lifeless. The heavy thumps of orbital bombardment silenced the screams of trillions.
[[1. You watched the events with a strategic eye to learn from your enemies’ mistakes.->WarStop]]
[[2. You volunteered your money and time to non-profit groups to help with those displaced.->WarStop]]
[[3. You didn’t care.->WarStop]]
All the fighting stopped at an unexpected announcement. All the galaxy’s leaders were to gather for a week-long summit in neutral territory on Pyrrhic Station; an event that hadn’t happened since humanity took to the stars.
At the end of the summit, the leaders gathered to announce that everyone had agreed to a temporary cease-fire and would work together on legislation for reparations and recompense. They also announced the foundation of the United Human Coalition, a democratically unified council composed of all the galaxy’s governments to help to handle disputes.
Celebrations broke out across the galaxy. The constant threat of war looked to be finally over.
[[1. You joined in the celebrations with your peers.->FatherHelp]]
[[2. You looked for the opportunities that would come from the new peace.->FatherHelp]]
[[3. You kept to your studies.->FatherHelp]]
After four years, you completed your education. You returned to your childhood home a different person. Yet, your mother and father welcomed you home with open arms.
After an elaborate party, your father invited you alone to his study. To your surprise, he offered you two gifts: a tricodium blade that had been passed down in your family for generations and the truth.
Your House was on the brink of collapse. While the founding of the UHC had helped curb the exterior threats, the constant in-fighting of the lower Houses bankrupted House Eros's economy and threatened a recession. Ideological and religious movements threatened any idea of stability. And anti-monarchism was spreading throughout all of your sectors.
For the first time in your life, your father turned to you and said words you’d never forget.
“I need your help.”
[[1. You embraced him and asked what he needed you to do.->Overseer]]
[[2. You accepted, but questioned how he could let this happen.->Overseer]]
As part of your agreement, your father decreed you as Overseer of the Ursas sector.
After your appointment, you took a military frigate and jumped to what would be your new home. Once you arrived, you questioned whether you made the right call.
The sector was a no-man's-land between Houses Zwane and Cetta. All inhabited planets were broken shells of what they once were, factories and mining stations had little to no production, and the area was full of pirates and smugglers.
While the streets of Semele filled with applause and cheers upon your arrival, a small minority of dissidence had already made themselves vocal of their displeasure of such a young ruler. However, you were keen to prove yourself.
During your first speech to the public, you decreed:
[[1. To clear the sector of criminals and pirates->CerberusGroup]]
[[2. To restore the production facilities to full capacity and create jobs->CerberusGroup]]
[[3. To build new infrastructure and restore public services->CerberusGroup]]
After a few years of hard work, you kept your promise to the people of the Ursas sector. The capital planet of Semele and the dozen stations under your authority slowly healed.
But while your constituents celebrated your success, it was not felt in the other regions. The House Wars finally concluded. In their victory, three of the largest remaining Houses combined into a unified consortium known as the Cerberus Group. With their combined might, they controlled a third of the territory, resources, and manpower.
In an effort to consolidate his own power, your father called you back home to take a seat on his council.
[[1. You left your post immediately.->FeelingsOfFathersDeath]]
[[2. You argued you still had business to finish on Semele and would need another week.->FeelingsOfFathersDeath]]
Upon returning home, you expected a royal welcome, only to be met with a legion of Novaɡärd and your mother’s tears. She informed you that your father was found dead in his study the night before. While an investigation was ongoing, no one knew the cause of his sudden death.
The next seventy-five hours were a blur. While you spent the majority of your time comforting your mother and making arrangements, you could shake the feeling of:
[[1. Remorse->FirstDay]]
[[2. Guilt->FirstDay]]
[[3. Happiness->FirstDay]]

You stand in front of your floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the snow-capped mountains that surround your estate. Dark clouds twist over the horizon. Small raindrops dot the glass as thunder roars overhead.
[[1. A bad omen]]
[[2. The sound relaxes you]]You look down at your ceremonial jacket and tug at it. While it’s tailored to your form, it feels tight around your chest and neck. You roll your shoulders, trying to breathe easier, but it doesn’t help. While you needlessly jerk and pull at it, a knock echoes from the door behind you.
[[1. Come in]]You take in a deep breath and smile. The rain reminds you of when you were a child. You would lie in your mother’s arms and take afternoon naps underneath covered awnings, just listening to the rain. It puts a smile on your face. As you reminisce, a knock echoes from the door behind you.
[[1. Come in]]The brush-bronze handle twists before the towering wood door creaks open. A congregation of house staff enter the room. They line up in sequence before bowing. The last to enter twists around the frame and extends their hand to those that follow.
Your mother steps inside next. Her elaborate obsidian-colored dress and morning veil drag along the floor. Two Novaɡärd march behind her. The black-and-blue-clad soldiers take positions on the opposite sides of the door, while your mother makes her way across the expansive room. Her heels click against the marble tiled floor, echoing throughout the vaulted ceilings.
Upon her arrival, you notice the heavy bags under her eyes. Still, she smiles warmly and curtseys before you. “Good morning, your Eminence. I hope you slept well.”
[[1. Reciprocate with a bow and share that you slept well.]]
[[2. Command her to rise.]]
[[3. Take her hand. “I’m not quite Archon, yet, mother.”]]
You reach for your mother’s hand and pull her up as you say, “I’m not quite Archon, yet, mother.”
When she straightens, she glares at you with a tilted nose.
“While you have not yet taken the right of ascension, it behooves you to begin acting as such. You are your father’s $fatherschild and this House’s next Archon.”
She finishes her lesson with a warm smile and continues. “I cannot imagine how much of a shock it is for you. As it is for all of us. But while I know you and your father did not have the best relationship, I hope you know that he loved you very much.”

“That he did,” she says, nodding. “But there will be plenty of time to discuss the past in the days ahead. Now, we must look toward the future. Starting with getting you properly dressed.”

“He had a great way of showing it,” you huff.
Your mother’s lips tremble. She grabs your shoulder and shakes her head. “There is so much that he wanted to share with you. But there will be plenty of time to discuss the past in the days ahead. Now, we must look toward the future. Starting with getting you properly dressed.”

Your mother approaches the two hovercarts holding the ceremonial garbs and waves back and forth with her finger. “I would choose either of these pieces. They are designed with our house in mind. For our allies and enemies, it shows that our house remains strong and connected. That you honor tradition. It will be what people are expecting and so it should help ease their minds and give the impression that the transition from your father to you will be a seamless one."
[[1. Return|ClothesChoice]]The staff exit the room and return seconds later, pushing hovercarts. Various clothing and accessories lay among the metal surfaces, providing an assortment to choose from. As you examine each of the displays, your mother's words ring throughout the surrounding room.
“I had Master Legot assemble only the finest wares money could buy. With your father gone, all eyes will be on you this day. First impressions are everything. Our allies, our enemies, and even our people will be judging you. Choose wisely.”

Rows of service ribbons cover the left breast. A dark brown and gold belt secures the waist with a Mikar Blaster Pistol secured inside. A red-and-black dress hat sits on top of perfectly shined dress shoes.
Taking up the entirety of the rest of the box is your Olympian Mark III combat uniform. A thicker ballistic gel conforms to the body and helps regulate body temperature in the most extreme environments. Bolt-on veruk alloy layers cover every non-flexible square inch of the body, providing protection capable of withstanding many calibers of slug-throwers and blaster bolts. Once finished, they return to their bowed positions allowing you put on your PICI and join your mother out in the hall.

[[1. Exit your room|CastleHallway]]You enter the hallway and begin the trek to the nearest rail line. The castle’s corridor stretches endlessly in both directions. High vaulted ceilings arch over floor-to-ceiling windows. Intricate blue-and-black rugs cover the decorative marble floor.
Dark wooden benches lined with padded pillows offer a place to sit for each passerby, but only a few dare use. Colossal paintings of your ancestors hang in between each doorway. Their eyes seem to follow you, as if judging your every move.
You pass several staff standing on ladders. They carefully light hundreds of candles sitting in metal chandeliers that illuminate the dark hallways and highlight your family’s love for tradition. Banners hang beyond them, each telling a story of your family's history.
Eventually, you turn down a perpendicular hall and stop at to two grand doors that stand ajar, their frames carved with your house’s crest. Further beyond them and recessed flush into the wall lies equally large metal doors and a lone staff member standing in front of them. Upon your arrival, the staff member taps on a control panel along a nearby wall causing the doors to swing open.
Air and rain bursts into the hall. Your mother grips her veil tightly. The walkway leads onto a metal platform where a shuttle idles in the storm. The roar of thunder suppresses the cry of the engines.
“Such weather on today of all days,” your mother mutters.
[[1. Grab her hand and help lead her in the rain]]
[[2. March toward your vehicle.]]You extend your arm to your mother and she smiles as she grips it tight. The staff member near the door hands you both a weather orb. You press the pressure plate on the orbs and toss each into the air.
They hover above you both before casting you in a thin semi-transparent protective box. As you enter the storm, steam radiates from all around you. The doors on the shuttle open horizontally, creating a set of stairs along the bottom half.
You both enter the elongated cabin and take a seat in one of the plush leather chairs. Once inside, you crab onto the weather orbs above you and deactivate them. Your protection detail takes the chairs across from you before the shuttle doors seal tightly.
The black interior walls flicker before illuminating with a three hundred and sixty degree view of your surroundings. You watch out the digital window as the shuttle ascends from the platform into the sky.
When you enter the clouds, your mother’s voice pulls your attention. “Once we arrive at the ceremony, I want you to be prepared. Things are going to move rather quickly. High-chancellor Satoshi will kick off the ceremony by making a speech. When he finishes, you will then have the opportunity to make a speech. Once you finish, you will light the pyre. You’ll wave to the crowds of your subjects through celebratory fireworks and and end back at Turris Eros where you will be crowned. After which you will make your declarations to your subjects. We would then conclude with a private ceremony for you to mingle with your… high profile constituents and supporters. If you want to put the public on your good side, we could fund a more elaborate ceremony with games, food, and entertainment. “Omari, would you remind me of our plans tonight?” you ask.
“Of course, your Eminence,” Omari says after taking a quick puff of his cigarillo. “The Horizon Assembly is our best opportunity to meet with the most powerful individuals in our galaxy. Anyone who’s anyone is here. Our allies. Our enemies. However, make no mistake, this is a place of peace, which is why it’s held in neutral territory in the galactic core and run by the Horizon Group.”
“Companies can still have political affiliation.”
“True, but the Horizon Group works more like a cooperative. Everyone here owns a piece and contributes to the group financially. This helps limit the influence of any single entity.”
“So, you’re telling me I have to play nice with our enemies?”
Omari smirks. “That’s up to you, your Eminence. As I see it, this forum is an opportunity. What you do with it is your prerogative.” He takes a step forward and leans in to whisper. “If I may offer some advice. Do not let your father’s legacy dictate your rivals. Get to know these people. Allow their true colors to show and make your own assessment. But keep in mind they are making their own assessment of you, so be strategic.”
[[Ask about any notable priorities]]
[[Head into the crowd blindly]]“Are there any noteworthy individuals that I should prioritize meeting?” you ask.
Omari flicks his ash onto the ground, holding his hand limp as he scans the crowd. His mechanical pupils zoom and rotate before he leans in close.
“Queen Lillevere is keeping rather interesting company. She’s speaking with Duke Volkov of the Cerberus Group, and Patriarch Braun, head of the Seraph. Three known threats speaking with one another does not bode well.”
Omari nods further in. “I see King Managold standing with his daughter, Princess Managold. They look surrounded by vultures. No doubt James Valentine is looking to secure another deal for his company while Chief Secretary Samira Balakrishnan of the Collective of United Systems and Chairman Giovanni Mancini of the Free Planetary Alliance are looking to entice the king to join their collection of systems.”
As Omari continues to scan, he perks up and a nefarious smile crests his lips. “Well, well, well, this night may be more interesting than we thought…”
You try to follow your chancellor’s gaze as you ask, “Why?”
Omari points his cigarillo out toward the edge of the room. You notice a woman wearing heavily armored combat gear sitting with her feet up. Just as you spot the bleeding star on her chest, your companion confirms your suspicions.
“The Iron Maiden, Annabelle Vayne, is here. It seems the pirate queen has earned herself enough of a reputation to get a seat at the table. Drinking next to her is billionaire playboy Tommy Danse, heir to the Danse fortune and largest nitridium refineries in the galaxy. And if you follow Ms. Vayne’s gaze, you’ll notice the Savior of Serengal, Retired Captain Kristoff Armstrong, no doubt here on behalf of Ebonite Cybernetics.”
Omari takes another puff on his cigarillo before turning toward you. “Do you have any questions of anyone I mentioned, or do you desire to dance?”

“Can you tell me more about Queen Lillevere?”
Omari takes a deep breath before speaking. “Queen Lillevere heads the largest monarchy behind our own and controls the sixth largest political territory. The queen maintains strict border control along her systems with inter-sector travel limited to licensed logistics only. She rules her sectors with an iron fist and controls a significant military presence. While her finances aren’t quite known, it’s assumed the crown has trillions in credits, with weapons manufacturing being their primary export. Relations between us and her majesty were quite strained during your father’s rule. Your father did not appreciate her authoritarian laws and restrictions she placed on her people, and she did not appreciate your father’s willingness to take in immigrants. In the political space, the queen’s ruthlessness is only matched by her beauty. While she may keep public appearances cordial, she is known to have a strong temper and hold quite the grudge. However, she would make an extremely strong political ally if you manage it.”

Omari’s lip curls as the disdain rolls off his tongue. “Ugh… I’d rather not waste the breath but if you insist… Duke Alexei Volkov is one head of the Cerberus Group. He heads House Volkov which is one of the minor houses located in our territory. Known as a shrewd businessman that made his fortune in the energy market, he has amassed a sizable wealth that likely exceeds our own house. Together with the other houses, they make a formidable internal threat to your rule. I would suggest keeping the smaller houses happy unless you have the plans and resources in place to enact grander ambitions.”

“Patriarch Sebastian Braun leads the Seraph. As you’ve heard in the briefings, they’re a fanatical terrorist organization masking themselves by their disdain for science, especially around human augmentation through technology. They believe such operations no matter how helpful for an individual are sacrilege of the purity of the human spirit. Over the last few years, their vocal minority has grown in size with protests and demonstrations which recently have turned violent. The patriarch is stubborn, faithful, and extremely conservative in his views. Managing to get him on your side could help deal with their faction of followers.”

Omari places his fingertips on his chest and smiles. “Happily. The Kingdom of Managold is one of our oldest allies. While they maintain the smallest territory in the galaxy, maintaining only one system, it is the most well known for its multiple habitable planets known for their beauty. Most of their income is earned through tourism and alcohol exports. King Jeremiah is beloved by his people. He’s overly protective of his daughter, Phoebe, especially after the queen passed. However, rumor has it he is considering entertaining suitors for his daughter's hand in marriage. That could be something you could pursue to strengthen our political alliance, given our upcoming trade agreement renewal.”

Omari flicks his hand in the air. “He’s the most surprising one here. Most likely because of a favor he called upon from someone else in the room. While Mr. Valentine is known for being charming, handsome, and confident, he doesn’t have much else going for him. From what I’ve heard, his company, Valentine Orbitals, is on the verge of bankruptcy. But you cannot put past the struggles he’s gone through to get here. I’m told his parents perished in the war when he was young, which led him to becoming one of the many strays seen in any number of outpost worlds. Yet, he rose to the occasion, attending Albon Institute of Technology before founding his company. Perhaps you could find a use for him?”

“Chief Secretary Samira Balakrishnan is head of the Collective of United Systems. They are a democratically elected collection of systems that control the largest territory in the galaxy. Their focus on trade and technology has made them also the wealthiest political faction out of any other. However, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Wealth inequality continues to run rampant, with many poor citizens struggling with basic amenities while those with many live lavishly. Privatization of many basic needs, such as healthcare and medicine, has caused the problem to worsen. Politically, they are currently in a stalemate with the Free Planetary Alliance as the two fight over the remaining monarchies and dictatorships that exist today.”

Yet somehow they continue to control the second largest territory in the galaxy. Their focus on raw materials, manufacturing, and illicit goods has made them the second wealthiest political faction. While unlike the CUS, they tout a shared utopian perspective where everyone shares the fruits of their labor equally, in practice they have the same problem where the political elite gain wealth hand over fist while the poor suffers. Unlike the CUS, however, basic needs such as healthcare, food, and education are easier to come by, but the overall quality is arguably not as good. Politically, they are currently in a stalemate with the Collective of United Systems as the two fight over the remaining monarchies and dictatorships that exist today.”

“You’re kidding.”
Omari shrugs. “That’s the rumor. Her reach spans across all political borders. Most of her income comes from a mixture of illegal and legal activities. All of her legitimate businesses are in the galactic core, giving her a buffer of immunity from the galactic governments. Not that many haven’t tried to bring her to justice. But like a seven foot tall cockroach, she manages to survive anything thrown at her. While his father built the company from the ground up, Tommy seems almost determined to squander his fortune. Technically, he is the company’s largest shareholder and sits on the board, but from what I’m told, he does not take his responsibilities seriously. Instead, he spends his time traveling, partying, and taking excessive amounts of recreational drugs. I do not see a positive use for developing a relationship with him, unless you’re looking for cheap thrills.”

His defends of Serengal Outpost earned him the Star of Valor from the CUS. After losing his leg from his wounds and retiring, Ebonite Cybernetics seized the opportunity by signing the captain as a brand ambassador from the company. Since then, he's founded several non-profits helping wounded soldiers get cybernetic implants to deal with combat injuries. You grab a single sample. From what you can tell, it’s an assortment of pink meat delicately sliced on top of a tan cracker garnished with a green vegetable.
When you pop it into your mouth and chew, a burst of sweet fishy flavor covers your palette. It’s muted by a heavy helping of garlic butter.

“What’s that?”
“That you’re single.” Omari winks and grins playfully before departing your company. In seconds, he notices someone and waves with the tips of his fingers.
As you scan the floor, you notice that each of the important dignitaries seem to be gathered in their own personal cliques.
Standing out in the open is only going to make me look ostracized and weak. I need to pick where I’m going quickly.
[[Head toward Queen Lillevere, Duke Volkov, and Patriarch Braun]]
[[Approach King Managold, Princess Managold, James Valentine, Chief Secretary Balakrishnan, and Chairman Mancini]]
[[Advance toward Pirate Queen Vayne, Tommy Danse, and Captain Armstrong]]
As you approach the group, the crowd parts, giving you a perfect view of each of the members.
In a sea of black and white, Queen Lillevere’s red dress pulls everyone’s attention. It shines with the same intensity as her raven black hair and porcelain skin. Her sharp cheeks angle toward the intensity of her blue-green eyes, heightened by her use of dark eye shadow and thick limbal rings.
Duke Volkov's slick back hair looks like it has as much wax in it as his thin mustache. With a glass in hand, his upper back hunches forward toward his listeners. His black suit with purple undershirt mirrors your house’s colors, but it's the mirror shined accessories that scream of wealth. The heckling clack of his laugh sounds more like a bird than a man. His thick teeth and wide grin add to the obnoxiousness. But you know, behind those dark brown eyes is someone you must be careful with.
Patriarch Braun stands above the others, concealing his face behind an anvil shaped helmet. His black-and-red ceremonial garb covers every inch of his body. The padded arms and elbow-length gloves make him look more ready for a space walk than a dinner party. You wonder how he was allowed in with the staff that looks more like a bludgeoning weapon than a walking stick.
Upon your approach, Queen Lillevere and Patriarch Bruan notice you while Duke Volkov continues his conversation.
“-and that’s how we’re able to provide shipment to you, your Majesty. Our new mining efforts will allow us to ensure consistent deliveries to—”
Queen Lillevere holds up her hand, cutting Duke Volkov off. She smiles and extends her limp hand toward you. “Your Eminence, what a lovely surprise. I was wondering if you’d be making a visit to this year’s gatherings.”
You…
[[Shake her hand]]
[[Kiss her hand]]

You take her hand in both hands and hold them as you say, “It’s lovely to see you, your Majesty.”
“Likewise, your Eminence,” the queen says before extending to the others. “I’m not sure if you’ve met his Holiness, Patriarch Bruan.”
“Your Eminence,” Braun says in a deep and booming voice.

[[Continue|QueenTest]]“Not at all,” Queen Lillevere says before smiling wildly. “Duke Volkov was just telling us about new nitridium deposits he discovered and was attempting to negotiate to sell us some. How much were you offering? Ten-thousand credits a shipment?”
The color drains from the Duke’s face. He lets out a light chuckle as his eyes dart from every direction.
All nitridium is your chief export. Any mines or sources are expected to be sold to your estate at a set price. If what the queen is suggesting is true, Duke Volkov is committing treason. But acknowledging it could make you look weak in front of your guests.
[[Play it off like you’re aware of the deal]]

You smile and nod. “Ah, yes. Duke Volkov is talking about the new mines that are coming online. We’ll have a surplus of nitridium soon, and we’ll be looking for new trading partners. Given the size of your military, your Majesty, I’d asked the duke to discuss it on my behalf. Isn’t that right, Duke Volkov?”
The duke glances up at you like a child caught stealing a cookie from the cookie jar. But he quickly tugs on the ends of his jacket and beams at her majesty. “That’s correct. So, if her majesty is interested, we could discuss the details at a later date.”
Queen Lillevere squints. Her eyes dart between you and the duke for a moment before smiling and nodding. “I could be interested, but there is much more to discuss before I’d be open to any deals given your father and I’s history, your Eminence.”
“Of course, your Majesty,” you say.
At the briefest lull in the conversation, the duke downs his drink and shakes his glass. “It seems I’m empty. I’m going to fetch myself another.”
You glare down at Duke Volkov. “Is that so? I was not aware of new nitridium mines coming online.”
The duke glances up at you like a child caught stealing a cookie from the cookie jar. “A-ah, yes. I was meaning to speak to you about it today, your Eminence. I seem to have gotten caught up in the excitement of what it could mean for House Eros. My humblest apologies.”
“Perhaps we should discuss this later, then. In private.”
Duke Volkov bows deeply. “Of course.” After straightening, the duke downs his drink and shakes his glass. “It seems I’m empty. I’m going to fetch myself another.”
As the duke leaves, Queen Lillevere giggles. “It seems you’ve got disobedient pets in your house, your Eminence. Might I suggest a firm hand?”
You nod. “I was unaware we had additional mines coming online. That’s good news.”
The duke glances up at you like a child caught stealing a cookie from the cookie jar. “A-ah, yes. I was meaning to speak to you about it today, your Eminence. I seem to have gotten caught up in the excitement of what it could mean for House Eros. My humblest apologies.”
“No apologies necessary. Let’s just discuss the increase in production another time.”
Duke Volkov bows deeply. “Of course.” After straightening, the duke downs his drink and shakes his glass. “It seems I’m empty. I’m going to fetch myself another.”
As the duke leaves, Queen Lillevere furrows her brow. “I’m surprised you’re okay with such things, your Eminence. If I had such a direct act of disobedience, the punishment would have been swift and severe.”

You thank whoever had the foresight to build all the important rooms close enough to your bedroom. After dressing yourself, you and Commander Matthias sprint down the long halls of Turris Eros before reaching the war room.
Two Novaɡärd grunt as they pull open the towering doors upon your approach, only to seal them immediately behind you as you enter.
A bridge extends out into the middle of the rotunda. In its center, a flat war table projects a floating planet which you can only assume is Hermes. Red dots and highlighted areas of the surface pulse like a crawling rash.
In a recessed lower level, dozens of military intelligence officers sit in front of endless rows of buttons and monitors, gathering the latest intel.
Fleet-Commander Kazan, Director Miyazaki, and Sir Weiss encircle the war table. Projected faces of the other chancellors hover from a nearby wall.
Upon entering the room, Commander Matthias announces your entry. “Attention! His Eminence, Ryder Eros, Heir of Samuel Eros, Eleventh in his line has arrived!”
The roar of clicking boots and slamming fists echoes throughout the room as you approach your subordinates.

<<button [["Get to the point."><>
“Can you just get to the point?” you ask.
“Absolutely, your Eminence,” Fleet-Commander Kazan says attempting to make herself taller. “In addition to the explosion killing hundreds of thousands, a dormant pathogen has spread across the planet, slowly infecting the population. Given the severity of the situation and the critical nature of Hermes, we need you to decide how we should best proceed.”

“Yes,” Fleet-Commander Kazan says without hesitation. “The blast sent millions of tons of ash into the atmosphere. Our current theory is that along with the ash, the eruption released a pathogen that up until this point was dormant inside the planet’s crust. How our mining efforts have not discovered this, we’re uncertain. But the pathogen is the reason for the priority apex. It is spreading like wildfire across the planet.”

“For this, I’ll turn it over to Doctor Cunngingham,” Fleet-Commander Kazan says.
The projection of Doctor Cunningham increases in size compared to the others.
“I want to apologize in advance, your Eminence, as the data we’ve been able to gather at this point is incomplete, but we are working with military teams on Hermes to gather more concrete details. With the information that we have right now, we believe this pathogen to be viral or fungal.”
A new hologram is projected, cycling videos from the planet.
“From recordings and first-hand accounts, once an individual is infected, in a matter of seconds, they begin developing symptoms. It starts with a cough and fever, but quickly devolves into vomiting and lesions. Once the pathogen has taken root, a metamorphosis occurs. The skin turns a charcoal black and develops pulsating growths, yellow in color. Nails elongate into dagger-like weapons.”
<<button [[“Dr. Cunningham, can you speak toward the pathogen’s life cycle and aggression?” Fleet-Commander Kazan asks.><>
“How critical is Hermes to our house?” you ask.
Sir Ornson’s image enlarges. “Hermes is considered a core world to our house, your Eminence. It contributes seventeen percent to our overall GDP. It’s an industrial world that houses ten billion plus citizens. If it were any other world I would say it would be felt but not cripple us. However, Hermes contains our largest nitridium mines. Losing those would cause supply constraints across all of our sectors. It would strain our relations with our allies and customers. Every ship in the galaxy needs it.”

Director Miyazaki taps a button on the war table that projects a bulleted table. “We have two different problems to deal with. First is the pathogen outbreak on Hermes. The second is the nitridium supply situation that this is going to cause. Fleet Commander Kazan and Doctor Cunningham have options to consider in dealing with the outbreak. Sir Ornson, Sir Zwane, and myself have options to consider in dealing with the nitridium supply issue. Which arguments would you like to hear first?”

“Sir Ornson, you have the floor,” Director Miyazaki says.
“Thank you, your Eminence,” Sir Ornson says, running his hand through his slick hair. “I have several options to present as well. The first of which is our reserves. Through your father’s infinite wisdom, we’ve amassed a sizable stockpile of nitridium reserves for situations like this. Should the situation on Hermes remain dire enough to threaten our supply, we can tap into these reserves. However, they are finite. Should the situation run too long, not only will we be delaying the inevitable, but we would lose the reserve, which could be useful for handling another situation.”
Sir Ornson takes a sip from a martini glass before resuming. “My second suggestion is that we bring in outside investment. Currently, House Eros nationalizes all of its nitridium mines through contracts with the various dukes and lower houses. However, we could open this up for outside investment. Not only would this increase our standing financially, but it would also help spur additional production through reduced regulation.”
Director Miyazaki gazes over his glasses. “And we’d lose all control over our supply with just a few taps on a datapad.”
“Not quite, ol’ friend. We can put guardrails in place to limit the number of mines, for example, but I digress.”

“Doctor?” Director Myazaki says, nodding toward the screen.
“It’s imperative that we completely understand the pathogen before we make any rash decisions. My proposal is to send a specialized research frigate loaded with our top epidemiologists to assist in the study of the infection. With their expertise and coordinated efforts from our teams on Atlas, I’m certain we can develop a vaccine and potentially a cure.”
You hear Fleet-Commander Kazan snort as the doctor concludes.
<<button [[“Fleet-Commander Kazan, you may present your proposals to his Eminence,” Director Miyazaki says.><>
“My second suggestion requires your full authority. We declare the planet lost and begin immediate ExoPlanetary Bombardment.”
The weight of the Fleet-Commander’s words silences the room. Your chancellors eye each other and mutter whispered words.
Sir Weiss breaks the silence. The projected table flashes as he slams his meaty hands onto the table. “You can’t be serious. You want to bomb the planet? That would kill billions.”
Without missing a beat, Fleet-Commander Kazan turns to the towering man across from her and speaks with complete confidence. “I do not advise this solution carelessly. It solves both problems. According to our reports, the pathogen is no longer airborne. We only have to worry about the infected being a threat. Right now the pathogen is contained to Hermes, but the longer we wait, the greater of a chance it has for one of those things to catch on the nearest shuttle and spread to other worlds. Yes we will have to rebuild, but the mines would stay relatively intact. According to Sir Ornson and Director Miyazaki, the interruption to our nitridium production would be less than a month.”
“That is if we get creative in our use for redeploying our citizens,” the director says. “Full rehabilitation of the planet will take decades.”

There are several reasons to do this: variations of transport costs, seasonal goods, or product differentiation.”
Sir Zwane taps on an invisible image which shifts the projection in front of you. Several arrows go back and forth between your House’s symbol and several of your allies' flags. “For us, we could use this same concept in strategic moments like this. For example, we could purchase additional nitridium on the market from our allies and other third party suppliers, and then resell that back to our allies as part of our agreements. “Of course. The good news is that outside of the initial infection window, the pathogen no longer seems to be transmissive while airborne. It could be because it simply can’t survive in the wild. The bad news is that those that are infected become overly aggressive. They attack and fight any non-infected nearby. We assume the pathogen is transmitted via bodily fluids given that most infected attempt to bite their foes. This method of infection turns its prey in minutes or hours depending on the location and severity of the wound.”
Fleet-Commander Kazan turns to you. “This is our biggest problem. While the initial explosion killed hundreds of thousands. The infection is spreading to millions. Each second, more people are becoming infected. The planet has become a warzone and without decisive action, we could lose it.”

Fleet-Commander Kazan taps on the war table adding two new bulletins. “The first is the more moderate approach to the two. By designating Hermes in a state of ApEm, we will have complete control over the planet. This will allow myself and the other admirals to direct all action going forward. Our plan is to redirect several dreadnoughts from nearby outposts to the planet, deploy containment forces, and fight back the infection while setting up protection zones where we can reach the most survivors. However, this process could take months or longer. The cost would be substantial both in manpower and resources.”
Fleet-Commander Kazan looks down and takes a deep breath before looking you dead in the eye.
