When you arrive, you and your section are positioned onto a section of trenchline.
You look down both ends of the trench. It is a dark and dingy chasm in the earth, but carved by man, not the force of nature, the mud pulls at your feet like quicksand.
The rift in the ground envelops you, and the walls of the trench are closed in, two men can barely get past each other.
The sounds of artillery are distant, you thank god you it is a quiet day and won't see combat before you've settled in.

You are jostled by some soldiers who tell you that their captain is to arrive to give them their orders. There were rumours floating around that an offensive was overdue.
You stand and wait with the others. Sure enough, the captian of the entire company arrived, the sargeants assembled all of us into formation, a bit of a sqeeze considering that you were all stuck in the trenches.
The captain, his name was unknown, began to speak. "There will be an offensive on the German's lines at 5:30 tomorrow. It is critical that these attack succeeds."
Noise came to the whole company, but it came to little surprise to most, considering the rumours.
The captain waited until the noise died down naturally, careful not to anger his men. "In order for the attack to be successful, we need men to volunteer for a night patrol. To scout out their defences".
You thought about what he was asking of you, all of you. To go over the top in the dead of night sounded like a stupid idea. On the other hand, would you want to face German machine guns tomorrow without being prepared. You thought about what you should do.

Gordon OPened his mouth to speak. "If you keep your head down, you'll be alright."
It was not something you wanted to hear. For all your dread, you still thought it would be a heroic journey. Instead, you were surrounded by tired looking men, caked in mud
Arthur patted you on the back. "Don't worry about it, if you die, you die."
Another one of the veterans, who looked like he'd seen hell, says he volunteered back in 1914.
"I was a foolish boy who wanted an adventure, a group of us volunteered. I'm the last one left".
That was a sobering thing to hear someone say. One by one, you stopped hearing from your friends too, until it was your turn to join in the brawl.
The soldier that had been here the longest, told you their names. "I'm Arthur, This little pipsqueak is Gordon, and this one here is Cecil."
Cecil nods his head at you, and then puts it back down, covering his face.
Arthur speaks up. "Don't talk much our cecil, no. Tongue had to be cut out after it got infected. they would've send him home, but he too useful."
You had to check your own tongue to make sure it was still in place. The four of you continued to talk about stories from back home. until it started making you feel homesick.

You and your comrades have stormed the trench lines and pushed the Germans out, the offensive has been a success.
But now you must await orders to push on, in the meantime you and the men ready yourselves and prepare for a counter offensive.
You find an empty dugout and take a sit. You think on what might happen to you while you are here.
You could survive the war, many of these soldiers must have been here since the beginning, why couldn't you.
But then you started to think rationally, the chances of you surviving the war where slim, and you didn't know how long you'll be here. People thought the war would last until christmas. That was almost three years ago. Now the war seemed like it would never end, a never ending machine slughtering the best our nations had to offer.
You are too old to cry, you said to yourself, but you felt the tears bubbling to the surface.
Before they could fall, you composed yourself, breathing and closing your eyes. It would not do for everyone to see how scared you were.

Orders

[[Volunteer for the night mission.|prepare for night patrol]]
