Finally, you ask the doctor. "So, what is Celiac Disease?"
"Well to put it simply, it is a autoimmune disorder that damages the small intestine. It is triggered when the recipient eats food containing gluten. Gluten is found in wheat, barley, rye, and other grains."
Despite being explained it still didn't hit as hard.
You were in seventh grade after all. The world was supposed to be bigger than you.

He continues, "Some of the long-term effects you could experience are coronary artery disease, nutrient deficiencies, and unfortunately, some forms of cancer."

"Lucky?" The situation didn't feel very lucky. "Is that the right term?" You ask.
The doctor looks at you sitting in the chair across from him.
"Lucky is the right term. Many people can go through life not knowning they have Celiac Disease. You know, you've only experienced some short term effects. There are very serious long term effects."

"That isn't how it works, Aunt Beverly..." Your mom seems aggravated.

You don't say anything. What could you say?!
Your mother's voice, instead, is heard. "I will make sure my daughter is given proper nutrients and does her research. Furthermore, we will go to the store this week, especially to prepare."
Your mother stands to leave, ushering you to stand as well. Reluctantly, you do.

You weren't sure how to feel.
Part of you was happy that this wasn't just the cause of your (link: "Anxiety.")[Anxiety. Another thing that seemed to cause your stomach nausea. It took multiple upon multiple different doctors visits to get to this point.]
It wasn't all in your head, although this is something knew you would have to learn how to work around.
Your celiac disease was a part of you, no matter if you liked it or not. It was your best worst friend now.
[[It will be your constant challenge that you couldn't outrun, only learn to live with. ->How it Started]]
(align:"=><=")[[Present Day ->Cancer?!?]]You can't handle it.
All of it.
It's just too much.
No one should be expected to live like this.
You didn't want to.
You couldn't do it anymore.
[[You were done.->How it Started]]You already experienced a significant amount of anxiety on a daily basis, but eating gluten could heighten your anxiety and even cause depression, especially while doing your homework.
Always worried that you didn’t complete something properly, worried that you were a failure, crying on a daily basis about not understanding things, just to name a few.
You already excessively doubted yourself, but your allergy made it worse.
No matter how long this lasted, you never loved any of it.

At the end of finally feeling better, there is something that lingers.
You found that, for a bit, you were scared to try new things.
You had the fear that everything was dangerous.
That you could only trust things you were used to.

It never lasted long, but it was there.

[[Continue ->Day of the Week]]After everything is placed and scanned the clerk speaks, "Your total is One hundred eighty-seven dollars and fourty-three cents."
"What?" Your mother asks. "That is way more than we normally pay. I bought the same things..."
Your mom asks to check the listing of all the items and looks at the prices. She finally finds something off.
"Why is gluten-free flour five dollars more expensive than regular flour?"
The clerk responds, “Well, they are considered a specialty item, ma’am.”
You can't help, but feel like this is your fault. You should say something...
[["We don't need to get it. I'll just eat like normal."]]
[["I'm sorry..."]]You were suprised.
One by the fact that you would meet someone who had celiac like you, but they were completely ok with eating something non gluten free.
"I just don't care." This stumped you. Why wouldn't she care about that? She holds out the cupcake again.
"You sure you don't want one. It is just one. It might make no difference."
Should you take it?
