This is a simple implementation of a Binaural Beats Generator made in RNBO. It makes commonly inaudible frequencies (below 20 Hz) audible by playing two sine waves with a slight frequency offset — one in each ear. Your brain perceives the difference between these two frequencies as a third tone: the binaural beat. This works because your brain is able to detect phase differences between your right and left ear, so it generates a third frequency based on the phase. When using this device in a monaural mode, this frequency will NOT be generated in your brain but on the way into your ears.
These low-frequency beats are often associated with different brainwave states, which are believed to influence mood, focus, and relaxation. The generator includes Amplitude Modulation (AM) to enhance the perceived beat by rhythmically scaling the volume — making the effect more pronounced and easier to hear and a Monaurator, emphasizing the difference wave. Both of these functions will shift the experience from being binaural to monaural, i.e. the perceived third wave is actually physically present. Explore this by lifting up one earcup while messing with the parameters. When they are both at 0, you should hear only a sine wave per ear, whereas if you turn them up, the sine pulsates.
Scales overall signal output. Set to 1 for full volume.
The base sine wave frequency, ranging from 20 to 250 Hz. Higher carriers tend to produce a more pronounced beat, while lower ones create a deeper, more relaxing tone.
The frequency difference between the left and right channels — this defines the binaural beat frequency, which corresponds to a particular brainwave state:
Brainwave | Frequency Range | Common Associations |
---|---|---|
Delta | 0.5–4 Hz | Deep sleep, unconsciousness, healing |
Theta | 4–8 Hz | Meditation, creativity, light sleep |
Alpha | 8–13 Hz | Relaxation, calm focus, wakeful rest |
Beta | 13–30 Hz | Alertness, concentration, problem-solving |
Gamma | 30–50 Hz | High-level cognition, memory |
Emphasizes the difference between the signals, i.e. the beat. Makes the effect monaural.
Amplitude modulation at the rate of the beat. Makes the effect monaural.
