No root to thunder,
no leaf to touch the sky—
only hush
between stone and rain.
Green lingers in shadow,
threading quiet

Still—
it holds.

Alice:

<<type 38ms>>Good morning Ms. Wells. Jack didn't come to work today. What you are holding is the sample book from the printer. And yes, it is from Mr. Shark.<</type>>
<<type 1ms>>

[["Well... This doesn't align with Mr. Shark’s usual standards."]]

[["Oh, it's pretty... novel for him"]]

<</type>>

Alice:

<<type 38ms>>You think so? Actually, according to the preview event, everyone seemed to like Mr. Shark’s new book very much, although he never wrote poems before.
I was also pretty surprised when Jack told me Mr. Shark’s new book was a poetry collection. After all, he’s always written fiction till now. But I guess whatever he writes is bound to be a hit. Come on, He's MR. SHARK.<</type>>
<<type 1ms>>

[["So why is Jack absent today? He's Mr. Shark's editor, isn't he?"]]

[["Alright, guess I’m just out of touch with the trends recently."]]

<</type>>

Alice:

<<type 38ms>>Exactly! According to the preview event, everyone seemed to love Mr. Shark’s new book, although he never wrote poems before.
We all thought his readers were mostly into novels, and that a poetry collection wouldn’t sell well. Jack only agreed to publish it because he didn’t want Mr. Shark to turn to other publishers—he wasn’t expecting to make any money off it.<</type>>
<<type 1ms>>

[["Jack's always had a great eye for discovering writers. He’s made for being an editor."]]

[["So why is Jack absent today? He's Mr. Shark's editor, isn't he?"]]

<</type>>

Alice:
<<type 38ms>>I have no idea. Right after the preview event ended, a few newspapers had already called to book interviews with Mr. Shark about his new book. I picked all those calls for him, but I can't connect Mr. Shark at all.<</type>>
<<type 1ms>>

[["Why? You never asked?"]]

<</type>>

Alice:
<<type 38ms>>The trends basically just shift WITH Mr. Shark. He wrote romance—romance sold out like crazy. He wrote detective stories—those flew off the shelves too. Then he turned to dark humor, and even that niche genre blowed up.
If you ask me, now is the perfect time to sign some new poets and publish a few more poetry collections. As soon as Mr. Shark’s new book drops, poetry's gonna be the next big thing.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[["OK, so you don't know why Jack is absent today, right?"]]

<</type>>

Alice:
<<type 38ms>>Yes, I have to admit that, even though we are competitors in the same press.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[["So you don't know why Jack is absent today, right?"]]

<</type>>

Alice:
<<type 38ms>>Mr. Shark doesn't like picking up phone calls. And it seems that he's a bit... cranky. Well, famous people do have the right to act cranky.
Every time Jack wants to meet him, he has to write a letter at least a week in advance to book the time slot.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[(Sigh) "I see..."]]

<</type>>

<<type 38ms>>

Scene 1 - An Unsual Visit

60 days before Jack's missing

It's not Jack’s first time visiting Mr. Shark, but even so, he still feels nervous about this.
Mr. Shark's house is in a quaint community. You can't tell any difference from this house to others from the outer look—they all look very antique.
However, the inside of it is almost like a luxury hotel. The floor is spotless, even making people feel bad to step on it. There is a grand piano in the living room. No one is sitting at it, but it still plays beautiful music.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[["Morning, Mr. Shark. I believe I scheduled an appointment with you last week."]]

<</type>>

Mr. Shark:
<<type 38ms>>Of course, I know. It just slipped my mind for a second. Welcom, Jack.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[Step in]]

<</type>>

Mr. Shark:
<<type 38ms>>Yes, you are from Tom&Wells Press, aren't you? Come on in. <</type>><<type 1ms>>

[["Thanks Mr. Shark"]]

<</type>>

<<type 38ms>>After seated on the sofa, Mr. Shark picked up a cigar, lighting it slowly as he turned it in his fingers.
The teacups on the table was still faintly steaming, but he didn’t seem to wanna say anything about it.
<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[Start speaking first about his latest work]]

[[Start speaking first about next cooperation]]

<</type>>

Jack:
<<type 38ms>>As I mentioned in my letter, Mr. Shark, your latest book has turned out to be a big success. I believe you are also aware of it, since we sent all the letters from the reader to your address.
Detective fiction isn’t an easy genre to write, especially considering you hadn’t written anything like it before. All of us at the press are very surprised and genuinely happy for you.
[[Congratulations!]]
<</type>>

Jack:
<<type 38ms>>Mr. Shark, I came by today primarily to discuss your recent or upcoming writing plan. Our publishing house has great confidence in your future work, and I would like to ask if you're currently working on anything new.
If so, I’d love to be your first reader—and of course, we’d be very eager to publish your next book.
If not, that’s perfectly fine too. Whether you have a theme you're interested in, a genre you're considering, or even just a rough idea, [[I’d very love to hear about it]].<</type>>

Mr. Shark:
<<type 38ms>>Suprised? Why would you be?
This isn’t my first time switching genres. Every attempt so far has been successful. I’ve stopped being surprised. Why haven’t you? Are you still questioning my ability to write?<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[["That's not what I mean."]]

<</type>>

Mr. Shark:
<<type 38ms>>Are you asking me?
Hey, you are my editor. You are the person who works in Tom&Wells Press. Shouldn't you be the person to tell me what readers are expecting? <</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[Explain why asking]]

[[Answer him directly]]

<</type>>

Jack:
<<type 38ms>>That's definitely not what I mean. Our publishing house has great confidence in your work, and I would like to know if you're currently working on anything new.
If so, I’d love to be your first reader—and of course, we’d be very eager to publish your next book.
If not, that’s perfectly fine too. Whether you have a theme you're interested in, a genre you're considering, or even just a rough idea, [[I’d very love to hear about it]].<</type>>

Jack:
<<type 38ms>>I'm sorry Mr. Shark. I thought you would have your own preferrence about writing. I’ve given you a lot of advice about what the market might want, and you’ve followed it every time.
But it kind of makes me feel bad recently, because it feels like I've been limiting your freedom on writing.
[[What do you think? Mr. Shark?]]
<</type>>

Mr. Shark:
<<type 38ms>>You know, I think you’re kind of... funny.
Young man, you really don’t know anything about being a writer.
Sure, you read a lot, you’re competent as an editor, and you’ve got a good eye for talented writers and great work.
But let me guess—you’ve never actually been a writer yourself, have you?<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[["No, but I..."]]

<</type>>

Jack:
<<type 38ms>>Market trends are hard to predict, and my prediction isn’t always right. But honestly, with your talent, Mr. Shark, you have the power to create new trends. You can write what you truly want to write. And I believe there will always be people who understand and appreciate your work.
[[What do you think? Mr. Shark?]]
<</type>>

Jack:
<<type 38ms>>No, but I’ve definitely tried. I’ve written all kinds of stories—novels across different genres, essays, travel journals, even poetry. Becoming a writer was the very first dream I ever had when I was a kid. I know I'm not a talented writer, but [[I do want to be a writer if I can.]]<</type>>

Shark:
<<type 38ms>>Hahaha… Come on.
Just think about it, young man.
Do you truly want to be a writer, making a living through your words?
Or are you just chasing the idea of a life where a few strokes of the pen can give you everything you’ve ever wanted?
<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[["..."]]

<</type>>

<<type 38ms>>
Cigar smoke drifts through the air, blurring Mr. Shark’s face.
A subtle, unreadable smile appears at the corner of his lips.
The self-playing piano loops the same tune again and again.

<<type 38ms>>

Scene 2 - Confussion

3 days after Jack's Missing

After exhausting every possible lead, The whole press have to accept one thing—Jack is missing, and he won’t be back.
No one understands why he left. And no one really has the energy to find out.
Because... <</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[The work he left is a much larger problem]]

[[Everyone is busy with their own work]]

<</type>>
<<audio "piano" stop>>

Alice:
<<type 38ms>>Ms. Wells? Are you saying you will take over Jack's work yourself? <</type>><<type 1ms>>

[["Yes, do you happen to know where does Mr. Shark live?"]]

[["Yes, but why you sound so worried?"]]

<</type>>

<<type 38ms>>Ms. Wells can’t find anyone suitable to take over Jack’s work right away, so she has no choice but to handle it herself.
For a long time, Jack has been the only editor working directly with Mr. Shark. He helped publish Mr. Shark’s debut, and for the past five years, he’s been his dedicated editor.
Even for Ms. Wells, this is the first time she’s personally dealt with anything related to Mr. Shark’s work.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[Read through the poetry collection first]]

[[Try to connect with Mr. Shark first|The work he left is a much larger problem]]

<</type>>

Alice:
<<type 38ms>>Ms. Wells, really? You want to meet Mr. Shark in person? <</type>><<type 1ms>>

[["Yes, after reading his new book, I'm even more worried"]]

[["Yes, but why you sound so worried?"]]

<</type>>

Alice:
<<type 38ms>>I do. There was one time when Jack had to go on a business trip, and he asked me to help organize the letters sent to Mr. Shark at the publishing house and deliver them all together to him. I still remember the address more or less. <</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[“Do you mind visiting him again?”]]

[[“Oh great. Where is it?”|"Yes, but why you sound so worried?"]]

<</type>>

Alice:
<<type 38ms>>Well... Mr. Shark is a bit... difficult. Since we already recieved his draft and already got the sample book from the printer, there is no need to meet him in person. <</type>><<type 1ms>>

[["But at least we need to inform him that Jack is missing."]]

[["Is he THAT difficult?"]]

<</type>>

Alice:
<<type 38ms>>Well, it makes sense. I can find the address for you. I believe I wrote it down in my notebook. Hope the meeting goes well. <</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[“It will. Don't worry.”|scene 3]]

<</type>>

Alice:
<<type 38ms>>I will say, there's no need to make things harder. Mr. Shark produced nice work. The preview event went well. Everything is going smoothly.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[“But as his new editor, shouldn't I at least say Hi to him?”|"But at least we need to inform him that Jack is missing."]]

[[“Actually, after reading his new book, I feel more uncertain about publishing it”|"Yes, after reading his new book, I'm even more worried"]]

<</type>>

Ms. Wells:
<<type 38ms>>I've read many works of Mr. Shark. I know he changes his writing style from time to time. But this time, this poetry collection just doesn't seem like him...
I know the preview event went really nice and many people liked it. But I still feel something wrong. I really need to meet him and talk through it.[[I'm now his editor, at least I should kill my doubt before I can trust him.|"But at least we need to inform him that Jack is missing."]]<</type>>

<<type 38ms>>

Scene 3 - Brilliant

52 days before Jack's Missing

Ever since leaving Mr. Shark’s house, Jack has been a little out of it.
The question Mr. Shark asked couldn't stop circling in his mind, keeping him awake all night. While, he also knows that he doesn't need to mind this so much. Because the next time they meet, Mr. Shark still won’t remember his name.
Working at the publishing house is hectic as always. After sending the latest finalized magazine to the printer, Jack at last found a chance to update Ms. Wells on what he's been doing lately. <</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[Mr. Shark's contract]]

[[Mr. Shark's new book]]

<</type>>

Jack:
<<type 38ms>>Good afternoon, Ms. Wells. After meeting with Mr. Shark in person, I don’t think he’s quite ready to start his next book.
Maybe we should give him some time to let him figure out what kind of story he really wants to tell.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[Continue]]

<</type>>

Ms. Wells:
<<type 38ms>>That’s fantastic. Mr. Shark is truly gifted. he succeeded in every writing style he touched. Honestly, I’ve got a feeling that he’s going to shape the whole future of popular fiction.
So even if we receive something a little risky or unconventional later on, we’ll still publish it, just to keep him with us.
And Jack, seriously, good job discovering him first.
<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[Talk about Mr. Shark's new book then]]

<</type>>

Ms. Wells:
<<type 38ms>>Well then... how about asking him to write a few short stories for us? Or start a new serialized piece in one of our monthly magazines?
Mr. Shark’s latest book is a hit right now. This could be a great opportunity to boost our magazine sales. He wrote so many different kinds of work, I’m sure he can handle it.
With the election coming up, we could suggest him writing some dark humor. And of course, we’ll offer him our highest pay rate.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[Turn to contract]]

<</type>>

Jack:
<<type 38ms>>Sure, I will write to him.
Also, Mr. Shark has signed the contract. For the next five years, he’ll consider us as his primary publishing partner. Every new book he writes will be sent to us first. Only if we turn it down will he turn to other publishers.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[Show the contract|show the contract2]]

<</type>>

Jack:
<<type 38ms>>These are some pieces I’ve written over the past few years, like some short novels, and some poems too.
I’m not saying I want to become a published author or anything like that. It’s just… we haven’t received many strong submissions for the magzines lately, so I thought maybe you could take a look and see if any of these might fit.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[hand them to Ms. Wells]]

<</type>>

Ms. Wells:
<<type 38ms>>Humm...
To be honest, Jack, you did a good job in writing. It’s clear you’ve put a lot of thought into your writing. Your language flows well, and every sentence is polished. I can tell these are from someone who’s read and written a lot over the years. For the magazine? Absolutely.
But… that’s it.
If we’re talking about published author, asking people to pay specifically for your work, I’m afraid it’s not quite there. Your writing still has a long way to go before it reaches that level of brilliant.<</type>>
<<type 1ms>>

[[Yes, I got it.]]

[[Briliant...?]]

<</type>>

Ms. Wells:
<<type 38ms>>Right? I know you get it, because you are an editor yourself.

Ms. Wells:
<<type 38ms>>Yes... I suppose.
You know how you feel when you first read Mr. Shark's work right? That was brilliant. And it will blow your mind no matter how many times you read it. That's something called talent, which we can't explain.
And you have your own talent, Jack. Your talent makes you an excellent editor, better than almost everyone. So... no hard feeling, right?<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[["Right."]]

<</type>>

Mr. Shark’s poetry collection is about to go into large-scale printing, so there's no time to schedule an appointment by mail.

<<type 38ms>>Mr. Shark turned and walked straight back into the house without a word, but he didn’t close the door. Ms. Wells followed him in.
The piano music is still playing—a piece from Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words. <<type 38ms>>That's not the main purpose of this visit, but we'd love to have it if you don't mind us sending it to one of your lucky fans. This poetry collection of you has received a lot of praise. The readers liked it very much, and also a bit... surprised by your new attempt in poetry.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[Mr. Shark laughed...]]

<</type>>

Ms. Wells:

<<type 38ms>>Mr. Shark, you've always been an important partner to our press. I can see that you've taken a bold step with this book—which is great.
But I have to say taht, I do have some concerns. It’s not that we’re unwilling to publish it, but this poetry collection, it doesn’t quite live up to the level of your previous works.
From both a sales and a reputation standpoint, I’d really suggest thinking it over again.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[Mr. Shark frowns, and flips through the book...]]

<</type>>

Mr. Shark:

<<type 38ms>>Hahaha... Really? They liked it? They also surprised me though.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[["What? Why?"]]

<</type>>

Mr. Shark:
<<type 38ms>>Look Ms. Wells, I'm sure there must be some kind of mistake. I didn’t write a single one of those poems. I never write poetry.
I mean, seriously, who will buy poetry books these days? How am I suppose to make money from those crap?<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[["Wait... Then why there's your name on the cover?"]]

<</type>>

Mr. Shark:

<<type 38ms>>How the hell can I know?!
Isn't it your work to figure it out? That... that John or Josh or anyone, shouldn't my editor be responsible for this?
So just because he's missing, you just randomly let someone else handle my work? What if I hadn’t been home today? Would this book, which has nothing to do with me, still be published under my name?<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[["Sorry I... I'm just shocked."]]

<</type>>

Mr. Shark:

<<type 38ms>>Wait, this is not my work. I never write anything similar at all.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[“What? Are you sure about it?”|"What? Why?"]]

<</type>>

Mr. Shark:

<<type 38ms>>Oh please, this isn’t the time to stay there in shock. I want an explanation as soon as possible. Otherwise, I won’t hesitate to terminate our contract. Take that seriously, Ms. Wells.<</type>>

It’s just another ordinary afternoon at the office. The door swings open with a soft chime from the bell.
A man in a soft cap, holding a cardboard box, steps inside and looks around.
“Is Jack here?” he asks.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[“Yes, it's me.”]]

<</type>>

Printer:
<<type 38ms>>Hi, I’m with the printing house. These are sample books you want.
Since it’s Mr. Shark’s unpublished work, I didn’t want to risk anything during delivery. And you said you need them quick, so I bringt them over myself.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[“Oh thanks. We need them for tomorrow's preview event.”]]

[[“It's so kind of you. These books are quiet heavy I suppose.”]]

<</type>>

Printer:

<<type 38ms>>I’m just glad it didn’t cause any delays for you.
And, may I know where will the preview event be? I'm a huge fan of Mr. Shark. My whole family is, actually. Is there any chance to take part in that preview event?<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[“Sorry, it's invited only...”]]

<</type>>

Printer:

<<type 38ms>>Oh, never mind. It’s really my pleasure to bring them here. You know what? I’m a huge fan of Mr. Shark. My whole family is.
I wasn’t invited to the preview event, so I was so excited to read a bit of it while binding the pages.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[“Then... May I ask how you like it?”]]

<</type>>

Printer:

<<type 38ms>>I’m totally in love with this book! It’s unlike anything Mr. Shark’s done before—he really knows how to surprise us. This one might be my favorite, even though I’ve only had time to read the first poem, MOSS.
I’m not exactly a literary expert, and I don’t read poetry much, but this work really hit me. I don't know how to explain it...
It felt like that poem was discribing or visualizing my soul. Sorry... am I being too dramatic?<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[“No, no...”]]

<</type>>

Jack:

<<type 38ms>>Of course! I'm Jack. I'm... I'm...
I'm the [[editor]] of this book.<</type>>

no leaf to touch the sky—
only hush
between stone and rain.
Green lingers in shadow,
threading quiet
through the bones
of trees that never were.
Still—
it holds.

Mr. Shark:

<<type 38ms>>Oh, This is my new book? Do you need me to sign it or...?<</type>>
<<type 1ms>>

[[Talk about the preview event]]

[[Talk about the worries]]

<</type>>

Jack:
<<type 38ms>>Good afternoon, Ms. Wells.
Mr. Shark has signed the contract. For the next five years, he’ll consider us as his primary publishing partner. Every new book he writes will be sent to us first. Only if we turn it down will he turn to other publishers.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[Show the contract]]

<</type>>

Jack:

<<type 38ms>>No, no... Absolutely not.
I'm so glad to hear that.
Thank you so much for loving this book. [[Really...]]<</type>>

<<type 38ms>>Hahaha... I should be the grateful one. Thank you for publishing such great work. I will definitely buy it at the first moment when I see it in book store. I promise.<</type>><<type 1ms>>

[[“I‘ll take that..”]]

<</type>>
