How to Play

Overview

Pebbel is a tactile hand dexterity game played with an assembled kit of found components. Prepare your own game kit by collecting 7 object sets, then compete to be the fastest to drop them from your hand in the generated sequence. The first player to accumulate 5 crowns in their hand wins. A game usually lasts 10-15 minutes.

Material/Preparations

Collect 7 sets of objects. A set consists of small things that share some property like 'smooth', 'rough', 'flat', 'long', or 'striped'. Just forage your surroundings for bits and pieces: stone pebbles, pasta shapes, nuts, office/hardware components. Aim for comfort and make sure it's easy for players to fit one of each set into their hand. Pick objects that are easy to tell apart by feel alone. Making sets out of identical pieces or buying components to make this is discouraged. Order Dropolter instead of spending money to make this.

When playing with younger players it's a good idea to reduce the number of object sets used. You need enough objects in each set so that all players can draft one from each category. Adjust the set names in the config, I recommend using adjectives but any descriptive term works.

In addition to the object sets, you'll need a supply of crowns—small tokens used to track round wins. Any easily grabbable item will work: coins, beads, or buttons, as long as they're distinct from the object sets and easy to hold in your hand during play.

Once you've created your first seven object sets and played a few rounds, you can start iterating and experimenting with new sets. It is up to you to figure out what your ideal kit looks like.

Setup

Place your 7 object sets in the center of the table. Starting with the youngest player, take turns picking until everyone has exactly one object from each set.

Playing

Each player places their objects in one hand, gives them a shuffle, then places their closed hand in front of them. During play, all players may only use one hand (for holding objects, crowns, and for tapping the screen). Once all players are ready, start the countdown.

As soon as the list appears, all players open their hands and start dropping objects from their hand to form a line in front of them that matches the generated sequence. The first object in the list must be the first dropped, and so on. The final object remains in hand and is not listed.

If a player makes a mistake and drops the wrong object, they must pick up all objects (using only their main hand) before they can try again.

First to complete the correct sequence and tap the screen wins the round and gains 1 crown. Players lose 1 crown if they tap the screen with an incorrect sequence. Crowns are held in your hand during play, dropping them loses them.

Advanced players can make the game harder for themselves by not looking at their hand during the round.

Winning

The first player to possess 5 crowns at once wins. After each round, collect your dropped objects and start the next round. It is considered courteous to declare Pebbel when a player picks up their fourth crown.
