How to Play Santase (Sixty-Six)

Objective

Be the first player to score 11 game points. Game points are won by winning rounds.

Gameplay - Phase 1 (Stock is Open)

As long as there are cards in the stock, the game is in Phase 1.

  • The non-dealer leads the first trick.
  • You do NOT have to follow suit or play a trump. You can play any card.
  • The trick is won by the highest card of the suit led, unless a trump is played, in which case the highest trump wins.

Special Actions (Phase 1 Only, on your turn to lead)

  • Marriage (Declaration): If you have the King and Queen of the same suit, you can declare a "marriage" by playing one of them *while leading a trick*. This scores 20 points (non-trump) or 40 points (trump).
(In Settings, you can switch between Automatic and Manual declaration).
  • Exchange Trump 9: If you have the Nine of the trump suit, you can exchange it for the face-up trump card.
  • Close the Stock: You can choose to "close the stock" to enter Phase 2 early. If you close, you MUST reach 66 points to win the round.

Gameplay - Phase 2 (Stock is Closed or Empty)

Once the stock is empty or has been closed, the rules of play become strict.

  • You **MUST** follow the suit that was led if you can.
  • If you cannot follow suit, you **MUST** play a trump card if you can.
  • If a trump is led, you **MUST** play a higher trump if you can.

Winning a Round & Scoring Game Points

A round ends when a player reaches 66 points, or when the last trick is played. The winner of the round scores game points based on the loser's score:

  • 1 Game Point: If the loser scored 33 or more card points.
  • 2 Game Points: If the loser scored less than 33 card points.
  • 3 Game Points: If the loser scored 0 card points (won no tricks).
