###NINESQUARE #####a character creation exercise ######by fenced forest media (c) 2019 [[LONG VERSION]] [[SHORT VERSION]] [[ANALOG ZINE VERSION]] THIS VERSION PRODUCES A GREATER DEPTH OF RESULTS, BUT TAKES MORE TIME AND EFFORT, AS WELL AS A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF IMAGE EDITING. first, right-click on this image of a greyscale 3x3 grid, and save it. next, go to (link-repeat: "brandmark.io's color app")[(open-url: 'https://brandmark.io/color-wheel/app/')]. drop the file into the image field. play around until you find one or more palettes you like. right-click or print screen to save the image. click on the image to open an expanded view where the hex values of the colors are listed. copy the hex values into a text file for later use, since the website is likely to time out before you're finished. [[got your hex values + palette image saved?->got it?]]####THIS VERSION IS QUICKER, BUT THE RESULTS ARE MORE LIMITED. go to Lorem Picsum (link-repeat: "at this link")[(open-url: 'https://picsum.photos/200')] and choose nine of the randomized square images. (refreshing will not bring up a new random image, you have to click through again) with an image editor, or in a document, arrange them in a 3x3 grid in any order. yes, you are making a tumblr-style moodboard. [[do you have it?]] ######stay tunedget your d10. i hope you didn't read ahead. you're going to interpret these images into a profile of a new character. [[ok]]####DICE TABLE in reading order, roll once for each square. check your result against the table below. reroll any repeats. you can also choose to go down the list in order without dice. ######1. this image represents the character's disabilities, conditions, skills not possessed, or material needs. ######2. this image represents the character's place in society as they perceive it. ######3. this image represents what the character is particularly good at or drawn to. ######4. this image represents the meaning or intent behind the character's name. ######5. this image represents either the best or worst thing that has ever happened to this character. ######6. this image represents a looming, ever-present shadow in the character's mind. ######7. this image represents someone dear to the character. ######8. this image represents the character's ideals or values in some way. ######9. this image represents something the character is very afraid of, disgusted by, or feels is sacrilegious. ######10. this image represents something that has a special contextual meaning to this character only. write your results in order in a text file or on paper. spend some time describing how each image fits the result. congratulations! you've made a character, which you can now flesh out further for any purpose you want, and you have a visual guide to draw themes from. ######[[home->TITLE]] | (link-repeat: "exit")[] open up your image editing program of choice. this can be mspaint. you don't need much. edit each image down to roughly the same size as the grid blocks, roughly 200px square, and arrange them together in the same configuration as the color blocks. the full image should be roughly 600px square, but it doesn't have to be perfect. yes, you are making a moodboard. be sure it's edited the way you like. it doesn't have to be any more precise or presentable than you want it to be, just pleasing to you. please credit all flickr photographers if posting this publicly. [[do you have it?]] now go to (link-repeat: "multicolr")[(open-url: 'http://labs.tineye.com/multicolr/')], a flickr search-by-color tool. under the "step 2" heading, choose any color and get into the "refine color" menu (the tiny color wheel icon in the color field). you can directly enter the hex values provided by the palette generator into this field. enter each hex value, and choose an image for each color from the results.
