Shutter Island

It’s 1954. You are U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels, a decorated war hero who returned home determined to keep serving his country. Your past is filled with shadows… secrets you’ve tried to bury. A violent storm batters your ferry as you approach Shutter Island, an isolated island entirely occupied by a psychiatric hospital. During the guards’ morning headcount, they discover that only 65 patients remain yesterday there were 66. One patient, Rachel Solando, has mysteriously vanished. Rachel was admitted after drowning her three children. You arrive with your partner, Marshal Chuck Aule. The staff behaves strangely. Nothing feels right. What do you decide to do first? “Good afternoon, Marshals. Allow me to introduce myself, I am Dr. Cawley, a physician here and the director of this institution. We’re pleased to have you with us.” The doctor gives you access to the reports and answers your questions about how the hospital operates. He explains that the facility is divided into three wards: Blocks A and B, which together hold 42 non-dangerous patients, and Block C, which contains the 24 most dangerous ones. Dr. Cawley: “You should also know that a storm is approaching. If we don’t find Rachel before tomorrow evening… well… I doubt anyone could survive out there without shelter.” After some time in his office, a sudden, violent migraine hits you. You arrive in the cafeteria of the ward where Rachel used to live. A heavy, suffocating atmosphere hangs over the room. The guards scan the area constantly… The nurses whisper among themselves… And the patients eat some muttering to themselves, others laughing abruptly, others still staring with frightened eyes. As you walk through the room, you feel every gaze following you. Chuck hands you a cigarette, and you light it. Who do you want to talk to? You: Did you know Rachel Solando well? Hickens: Ask the director about that. I don’t talk to the patients, I don’t really know them. Who do you want to talk to now? You’re walking around when suddenly three guards enter the room and move toward you. Chuck: What the hell is this? You: We’re about to find out… A man steps inside. Man: Good afternoon, gentlemen. You enter a simple room with a bed and a small toilet, but as you look around, you notice something strange: the number 67 is written all over the walls. Everywhere. It makes no sense… Suddenly, three guards burst into the room. Chuck: What the hell is this? You: We’re about to find out… A man steps inside. Man: Good afternoon, gentlemen. She stands up, and at first she seems fairly normal… until she suddenly starts mistaking you for her husband. In an instant, she becomes violent, screaming: “My husband is dead!! WHO ARE YOU?? WHO ARE YOU??” She lunges toward you, her behavior escalating rapidly. You rush out of the room as she screams behind you: “67!! 67!! 67!! 67!! 67!!” Breathing heavily, you glance back. Chuck hands you a cigarette. Chuck: Well… that was something. He lets you pass. You walk deeper into the corridors. Everything is dark… You hear screaming, laughing, nothing normal. You know exactly where to go. You studied the blueprints for weeks. You know which cell is his, but the number bothers you. 67. Why? You remember the doctor’s words: 42 patients in Wards A and B, and 24 in Ward C. That makes 66. Not 67. So why 67? Why all these secrets around this cell? Who is the uncounted patient? Have they already decided to give up on Rachel? Lost in your thoughts, you suddenly realize you’re already there… The cell is completely dark, seemingly empty. Suddenly, click, a flame appears, then dies. Click, again. You move closer. It’s getting dangerous. You pull out a map and spot two locations that could matter to your investigation. The beach the most plausible place someone might go to try to leave the island. You reach the area near the beach, but a major obstacle stands in your way, a cliff. It’s extremely steep, and with the rain pouring down, it’s even more dangerous than usual. Far off on the beach, you spot a lighthouse that’s been abandoned for a long time. Yet strangely… there’s light at the top. [[Climb down to the beach ->cliff]] [[Head back into the forest ->forest]]

You enter the forest but quickly realize how dangerous the terrain is. Mud everywhere, the ground slipping under your boots, complete darkness… If a trail ever existed here, it’s long gone now. You’re in danger, you have no choice but to keep moving. You check your map for possible shelters and spot two of them: an abandoned lighthouse on the beach, and a small shelter in the island’s cemetery. You try to climb down. Slowly. Carefully. The cliff is slippery… There’s no way back up, you have to keep going. Then the inevitable happens. You slip and fall several meters. Everything goes black. [[Continue ->cave]]

You reach the area near the beach, but a major obstacle stands in your way, a cliff. It’s extremely steep, and with the rain pouring down, it’s more dangerous than ever. Far off on the beach, you spot a lighthouse that’s been abandoned for years. Yet strangely… there’s light shining at the top. You have no choice now. The storm is roaring. This cemetery is fairly ordinary, though much muddier because of the storm. You find the shelter easily enough and barricade yourself inside. It’s pitch black… you light a small lighter. [[Explore the shelter ->shelter]]

You wake up in a cave, struggling to regain your senses. You’re lying next to a small campfire. As you look around, you see a woman sitting alone. You: Who are you? What are you doing here? Her: I found you unconscious outside this cave, and you? What the hell are you doing here?! You: I’m Marshal Daniels. I’m here investigating the disappearance of a woman named Rachel Solando. Her: That’s me. I AM RACHEL SOLANDO!!! You talk with her… Rachel: You’re in danger, Marshal. You: No way. No one would dare harm a federal agent. Rachel: No one ever leaves this place. They’ll make you lose your mind. If you think about it, you’ll realize it already started. Have you suffered strong migraines or blackouts since you arrived? You: Yes, but… Rachel: Then they drugged you without you knowing. You: Impossible. Rachel: You must have ingested something. A mild sedative, maybe… even a cigarette. Don’t take anything from them!! You notice a sentence carved into the wall: “If you are not one of them, you will become one of us soon. Do not accept anything from them.” [[Go left ->right1]]

You reach the area above the beach, but a major obstacle stands in your way, a cliff. It’s extremely steep, and with the pouring rain, dangerously slippery. Far off on the beach, you spot a lighthouse that’s been abandoned for years… Yet strangely, there is light glowing at the top. Leaning forward, you also spot a cave a few meters below. You manage to find a route that looks more or less safe. [[Climb down ->cave1+continued]]

You see a message carved into the wall: "If you are not one of them, you will soon become one of us. Do not accept anything from them." [[Go to the cave ->cave1]]

You reach the entrance of the cave with great difficulty. Inside, you see light, the glow of a small fire. As you step in, you see a woman sitting alone. Her: Who are you? What are you doing here? You: I’m Marshal Daniels. I’m investigating the disappearance of a woman named Rachel Solando. Her: That’s me. I AM RACHEL SOLANDO!!! You speak with her… Rachel: You’re in danger, Marshal. You: Impossible. No one would dare harm a federal agent. Rachel: No one ever leaves this place. They’ll drive you insane. If you think about it, you’ll realize it’s already begun. Have you experienced severe migraines or blackouts since you arrived? You: Yes, but… Rachel: Then they drugged you without you knowing. You: No. Impossible. Rachel: You must have ingested something. Your combat instincts sense the danger immediately. You draw your service weapon and enter the lighthouse. Floor after floor, nothing. You reach the top and push the door open. You see Chuck, your partner… wearing something strange, a medical gown. Chuck: Hey, boss… You: What are you doing here? And why are you dressed like that? Chuck: It’s okay, boss. Stay calm. I’ll explain everything. Suddenly, a door opens and Dr. Cawley steps in. Cawley: Good evening. You finally figured it out. You: Figured what out?! Cawley: The real reason you’re here. You: I’m here to investigate Solando’s disappearance!! Cawley: Your real reason. He… he can’t know about Laeddis… Cawley: Andrew… You point your gun at the doctor. Cawley: Laeddis. You: You have no idea what that man did to me!!! Cawley: You did this to yourself. You: How dare you?! Cawley: YOU ARE ANDREW LAEDDIS!!!
