Expert Guide

Racing Lines

Identify F1 tracks, NASCAR ovals, and street circuits from above using the "Squiggle Test".

💡 Pro Tip: Look for the "Runoff Areas". Modern F1 tracks are famous for having bright blue, red, or striped painted asphalt around the sharp corners. Older tracks just have gravel (beige/grey) or grass.

1. The Squiggle Test: F1 vs Ovals

The general shape of the track is your first elimination method.

The Loop (NASCAR/Indy)

A simple oval or "tri-oval". Very consistent width. Usually found in the USA (Daytona, Indianapolis). Easy to spot.

The Squiggle (Formula 1)

A complex, twisted line that looks like a snake or a child's drawing. Varying widths and sharp corners. (e.g., Silverstone, Spa, Suzuka).

2. Street vs. Purpose-Built

Is the track in a park/desert, or is it cutting through a city?

Street Circuits (City Patterns)

Right-angle 90° corners are common (following city blocks). Buildings are right up against the track fence.
Examples: Monaco, Baku, Singapore.

Purpose-Built (Open Space)

Flowing curves, large grandstands clearly visible as separate structures, and lots of green space or desert around the track.

3. Detective Strategy: The Sand Trap

The surrounding environment is the ultimate clue for location.

4. Street Circuits vs Permanent Tracks

Circuit type dramatically changes appearance and detectability.

Street Circuits

Follow city streets with 90-degree corners. Barriers and grandstands temporary (not visible in off-season imagery). Harbor views or city skylines adjacent. Examples: Monaco, Singapore, Baku.

Permanent Tracks

Purpose-built with large run-off areas (grass or gravel visible as different colors). Smooth flowing curves, not constrained by urban grid. Paddock buildings, grandstands permanent. Examples: Silverstone, Spa, Monza.

5. Famous Corner Configurations

Signature corners are often identifiable from their unique shapes.

6. Paddock & Pit Lane Analysis

The pit area is a telltale identifier for serious circuits.

🔧 Pit Complex Clues:

Pit Lane: Parallel to main straight, separated by wall. Look for a thin strip alongside the track.

Garages: Building boxes with colored shutters (team colors sometimes visible on high-res). Linear arrangement.

Paddock: Area behind garages with hospitality buildings. On major circuits (F1), this area shows motoromes, trucks, and temporary structures during race weekends.

Start/Finish Line: Usually marked with checkered pattern on track surface (visible as light/dark stripes).

Lights out and away we go!
