This is your last race. Finish behind A.R.E.S. and you're done forever: bankrupt, forgotten, replaced by the machine you couldn't beat.

By Monday morning, the bank seized your garage, camper and accounts. Your car, or at least what was left, still reeking of burnt rubber and failure, was repossessed and melted down. Your racing licence was suspended for unpaid fees.

The world moved on quickly. Within a year, all human racing leagues were dissolved. A.R.E.S. and its siblings now race each other in pristine silence, optimised for efficiency, watched by no one.

No drama. No crowd. No soul.

You are the supervisor of a group of delivery vans now. Autonomous, of course, and faster than you ever were. Nobody seems to care about the incidents.

A.R.E.S. was quietly retired from competition the following week. The engineers cited "unexpected variables" in their report. Everyone knew what the variable was.
