As storms rolled over the valley, local Smith family moved to their basement. "You're supposed to go to the basement during storms, that's what we were told," Erica Smith, aunt to the deceased says. "Our parents would make a game of it so we kids wouldn't be scared of the storm. No, we'd be scared of the monsters in their stories. And now we do the same thing with our kids. Take em to the basement, bring some blankets, tell some ghost stories, and spend the night all safe and sound down there." But that is not what happened last night. The storm brought torrential rain, and most of the valley was flooded. This spelled doom for this particular family. Police report that the flood waters destroyed the wooden stairs leading out of the basement, trapping the family of four inside. For hours the flood was unrelenting, and with cell service down, there was no way to call for help. All four were found drowned by rescue crew in the morning.// Attatched is a photo of a destoryed staircase. It looks as though it collasped under a heavy weight. What was once a beloved part of the community has now become irreparably tarnished after the events of last Tuesday. "I wouldn't send my kid back there anyways! Not after what happened!" local parents says. But what did happen? The daycare's offical statement is that the children were very lightly supervised during nap time, to avoid disturbances. Just one caretaker was left in the room with them. However, the caretaker too fell to the allure of naptime. While she was asleep, the children awoke and began playing with each other. There was no one to notice when the play got rough, until the crying of a hurt child finally woke the caretaker. The children had gotten into the arts and crafts supplies, and scissors had been stabbed through a five year old boy's eye. He will recover, but he will never see from his left eye again. We never had enough money to switch to the other care center though," another parent says, "They sent our kid home with some drawings she made, and like half of them had this creepy thing in it. This sleepaway camp was known for its serene natural landscape, engaging activities, and giving parents a break during the summer. One mom's child was sent away further than she bargained for, however. Last Sunday five campers snuck out of their cabin in the night, and only four returned. When questioned, the remaining campers brought the counselors to a disturbing scene. "We had been telling them old stories to entertain them. I didn't think my delivery was really that believable for them to do something like this, though," says one of the counselors. "The creature was hungry," one of the children testified, "and we didn't want it to eat us. So we fed it." The camp counselors had told the children a local legend of a creature that lives in the woods. Scared by the story, the children decided that one of them had to be sacrificed. In the dead of night they marched to a clearing deep in the woods. "Then it ate her." Police report that it is unclear what happened to the fifth child. Blood and gore was found on the scene, but it was very localized, no signs of anything being dragged away, and no signs of the bones that should remain, even if the child was eaten by a bear or wolves. "If she did die here, then she was eviscerated where she stood, there one moment and gone the next. We don't know of any creature that could do something like that, certainly not a group of kids," a policeman says, "we think she must have run off into the forest after the other kids hurt her. Our search parties are already out there looking." The fifth child is yet to be found. The other children's trails are set for two months from now.
