Forgotten Rules
Play as the Joel and Clementine in Joel’s relationship memory palace, fighting to remember and link his
tiles of memories while Lacuna, Inc. attempts to erase all traces of their relationship.
Materials
Game Board
17 Sets of Memory Tiles, 34 Tiles in total
2 Brain Tiles
Blue Die (X-axis)
Orange Die (Y-axis)
Object:
Work together to create a non-diagonal path of uncovered matched Memory Tiles from one
player’s Brain Tile to the other in order to stop Lucuna Inc.’s deletion of memories and
remember Joel and Clementine’s relationship. Players need to act quickly because Lacuna Inc.
will continue their Erasure Process and eventually inhibit the creation of a path. If Lucuna Inc.
succeeds, all memories of Joel and Clementine’s relationship will be forgotten and Clemintine
will be a stranger to Joel.
Note: Diagonals do not count in the path, except for the Memory Tile diagonal to the starting
Brain Tiles.
Preparation
Each player places a Brain Tile face up on opposite sides of the grid, but choose together as these
will be the start/endpoints of Joel and Clemintine’s Memory Tile path. After the start/endpoints
are chosen, shuffle the Memory Tiles face-down so the images are hidden. Then place each
Memory Tile on one of the board’s six by six grid spaces, excluding the spaces where the Brain
Tiles were put.
When all the Memory Tiles are scrambled and in place, have each player roll a die. Whoever
rolls higher gets a chance to match and recollect Joel and Clemintine’s relationship first.
Turns
Each turn, a player flips over two Memory Tiles in an attempt to make a match and recall the
memory. A match consists of two Memory Tiles that convey the same scene with one depicting
the larger memory and the other a specific element within the larger memory. If the player flips
matching Memory Tiles, then the two tiles stay face up in their respective space. If the player
fails to make a match, the memories are flipped back over. After the tiles are back in their space,
uncovered or covered, the next player begins their turn.
After each player takes their turn, the Erasure Process begins.
Erasure Process
During the Erasure Process, each player rolls a die. The colors of the dice refer to the X and Y
axes and the rolled numbers coordinates on the board grid. Locate the Memory Tile the dice refer
to and remove it from the board, regardless if it has been uncovered or not. This portion of the
memory has now been forgotten and if the tile was still covered, it remains face down. But if it
was previously matched, the other Memory Tile remains uncovered on the board.
If rolled coordinates refer to a Memory Tile that has already been removed or a Brain Tile, no
tiles are removed and the Erasure Process is over. After the Erasure process is over Players start
their turns again.
End of Game
If the two players can successfully create a non-diagonal path of Memories Tiles from one Brain
Tile to another, they have successfully won the game, remembered Joel and Clementine’s
relationship, and stopped Lucuna Inc’s Erasure Process.
But if Lucana Inc’s Erasure Process has deleted enough Memory Tiles to make a non-diagonal
path impossible or players give up, the game ends and Joel and Clementine’s relationship is
forgotten forever.
Note: Diagonals do not count in the path, except for the Memory Tile diagonal to the starting
Brain Tiles.
