Getting Started
Welcome! In this editor, you build 3D objects and paint them pixel by pixel. To begin, click on any face of the 3D model in the 3D View (right-side) to edit it in the 2D Editor view (left-side). You can rotate the 3D view by holding right-click and dragging.
Important: Saving & Limitations
- Auto-save: Your project automatically saves to your browser's storage every second. This works great for small to medium projects!
- Size limit (~4MB): Browser storage has a limit of approximately 4MB. If your project has many voxels and exceeds this threshold, auto-save will stop working. Always use the "Save" button in the File section to download a .json backup for important or large projects to prevent data loss.
- Undo/Redo history: Your undo/redo history is stored per-session only and will reset when you refresh the page. Make sure to save your work before closing the browser!
Basic Workflows
- Painting: Make sure "Paint" mode is selected in the Modes section. Pick a color from the Palette, choose the Pencil tool, and click or drag in the 2D view on the left to draw on the selected 3D face.
- Building: Switch to "Build" mode to add or remove blocks (voxels). In Build mode, clicking on the 2D grid will grow or shrink the 3D model instead of just coloring it. Clicking and dragging with the Pencil tool will create continuous lines of voxels.
- Mirror Mode (M): Available while in Build mode. When enabled, any blocks you add or remove will be mirrored symmetrically across the center axis of your model. This also works with the Push/Pull tool to stretch or shrink both sides of your model simultaneously!
Tools
Note: The Tool Size setting in the toolbar allows you to increase the brush size for the Pencil, Eraser, and Line tools.
- Pencil (B): Your main tool. Use it to draw pixels of color (Paint mode) or add blocks (Build mode). (Affected by Tool Size)
- Eraser (E): Removes color (Paint mode) or deletes blocks completely (Build mode). (Affected by Tool Size)
- Fill (F): Like a paint bucket. Click an area to instantly fill matching connected pixels or blocks. Pro tip: Click and drag to continue filling across multiple faces or areas seamlessly!
- Line (L): Click and drag to draw perfectly straight lines of color or blocks. (Affected by Tool Size)
- Eyedropper (I): Click anywhere on your drawing to pick up that color so you can use it again.
- Select (S): Click and drag to draw a box around an area. You can then copy or move the things inside the box.
- Push/Pull (P): Click and drag up or down on a flat surface in the 3D view to quickly stretch or shrink it (extrude/intrude). Works symmetrically if Mirror Mode is active!
Modes
- Paint: Used only for coloring the outside surfaces of your model.
- Build: Used for creating the actual 3D shape by stacking or removing cube blocks.
- Chamfer: Modifies the sharp edges of blocks to create slanted, flat diagonal slopes.
- Fillet: Modifies the sharp edges of blocks to create smooth, rounded curves.
