It's Friday night, and you're having a great time with your friends. You're all enjoying the first evening without homework all semester. Everyone had some stories about how they turned in an assignment at 11:59pm, when it was due at 12:00am or how they completely forgot about a paper they had to write until just hours before it was due. One of your friends was talking about how they forgot that a paper was due in class that day, and they typed it up in less than an hour!
//I'm glad that I haven't had anything that bad happen to me. I just can't help but feel like I'm forgetting something, though//, you think to yourself. Your friend, Sally, starts to talk about a paper she forgot about that was due tonight. She finished writing it just in time so that she could still hang out with everyone.
"It was crazy how I forgot all about that paper! I started writing it last night, and then I worked on it all day today. Let me tell you, that paper took a lot longer to write than I thought it was going to take. The research turned out to be a lot harder than I thought. I think it took me a total of like 6 hours to write that paper! It's not even that great either... I just did the bare minimum."
"Wait, Sally. What class did you say this was for?" you ask her.
"Psychology. The class hasn't been too difficult since this paper."
"I'm taking a psychology class, too. Who's your professor?"
"I have Dr. Mackintosh for general psych. What class are you taking?"
"General psych... with Dr. Mackitosh." You begin to realize that you //did // forget to do something, and you're just now realizing what it is.
"Oh, cool! I had no idea we were in the same class! That paper was tough, wasn't it? What did you write about?"
"I wrote about seals..." you make something up, and Sally looks extremely confused.
"Seals? But I thought the paper was supposed to be about famous psychologists..." Sally is confused and not really sure what to do for a few moments.
**You forgot to write your paper! It's due in just over three hours.
What are you going to do?**
[[Get to work!]]
[[Do it later.]]"You wrote about seals?" Sally asks you again, still trying to wrap her head aruond how seals and famous psychologists could be connected. "Was there a famous psychologist who studied seals or something?"
You gather your things as Sally tries to make sense of what you just said.
"I gotta go. I'll see you later." You run out of the room, and make a break for it.
**Where should you go?**
[[Go to room]]
[[Go to library]]"You wrote about seals?" Sally asks you again, still trying to wrap her head around how seals and famous psychologists could be connected. "Was there a famous psychologist who studied seals or something?"
"Yeah. The psychologist I wrote about studied seals. He is still famous, but just not as well known." You make something up really quickly and hope that she doesn't question it too much.
"Oh, that's so cool. What's his name? His research sounds interesting, and I would love to learn about it." Sally believes you, but now she's asking too many questions.
**What should you do?**
[[Make something up again.]]
[[Tell her the truth.]]
[[Pretend you heard someone call your name.]]
[[Just walk away from her.]]You run to your room, and you sit in your chair at your desk. You open your laptop and stare at your desktop.
You check your phone for the time. It's 8:57pm. You have about three hours to get your paper done.
**What are you going to do first?**
[[Open the Internet.]]You run toward the library. The lights are on, so that means it should still be open! You run up to the door, and try to open it. It's locked!
You see someone inside. You could try to get their attention and see if they would open the door for you.
**What are you going to do?**
[[Knock on door.]]
[[Just leave and go to your room.]]You decide to keep making things up and hope that she won't ask any more questions. You can't think of any names, though.
**What should you say?**
[["His name is really hard to pronounce. It was a Russian psychologist, and I had to look up how to spell his name every single time I wrote it in my paper." ->"His name is really hard to pronounce."]]
[["I don't think you would actually want to know. He had to kill all of the seals in order to study them. It's really sad stuff." ->"I don't think you would actually want to know."]]"I'm sorry, Sally, but I don't think anyone like that exists. I haven't written my paper yet, and the only thing that came to my mind when you asked me what I wrote about was seals."
Sally starts laughing. "The first thing that came to your mind was seals? Nothing else at all? That is hilarious." She laughs for a minute, and then suddenly stops. "Wait-you haven't written your paper yet?!"
"...no," you reply. Sally starts grabbing your belongings and shoves them in your arms.
"Let's go! Your paper is due in less than three hours!" Sally grabs you by the arm and pulls you out the door.
"Where are we going?!"
"Anywhere we need to go in order for you to get this paper done! We can work on it in my room or your room. Where do you want to go?"
[[Sally's room]]
[[Your room]]
"What? Oh, coming, Jack!" You start to walk away, but then turn back to Sally. "Sorry. Jack's calling me. Talk to you later?"
Sally nodds and says, "Oh. Yeah. That's fine. I'll talk to you later." She waves as you start walking to the opposite side of the room.
That actually worked! Now, you should probably find Jack before Sally gets suspicious.
You find Jack and start talking to him about squirrels. I know it sounds weird, but that's just what he was talking about with other people, so you just went along with it. You keep talking, and the conversation somehow got to talking about everyone's favorite tv shows when they were kids.
"Hey, does anyone know what time it is?" someone asks. You check your phone, and you say, "Yeah, it's 10:06." You continue to hang out with Jack and your other friends when you remember that you still have to write your paper for psychology.
Your paper is due at 11:59pm. You have less than two hours now.
**What are you going to do?**
[[Keep hanging out]]
[[Get to work]]You smile, nod, and walk away from her.
"Wait... where are you going?" she asks. "I thought we were in the middle of a conversation?" You keep walking as she's talking to you. You don't stop walking until you are far away from Sally.
You walked out of the room, and onto a random floor in the building. It's quiet, so it's nice to just walk around the empty hallways.
All of a sudden, the door to the stairwell flies open.
"There you are!" a familiar voice yells. It's Sally, and she has a group of angry people with her. "What are you doing up here?"
"YEAH! What do you think you're doing just walking away from someone when they're talking to you?!" one of the guys in her posse yells. Sally turns to him and gives him a little gesture to tell him to calm down. He does a quick nod and steps back a little bit.
"I was just trying to ask you a questions, but then you just got up and walked away. What was that about? And then you kept ignoring me when I was trying to figure out what you were doing," she says.
"I'm sorry, I guess I just couldn't--" you start to explain yourself, but Sally cuts you off.
"Don't say that you couldn't hear me. Everyone on that floor could hear me, so there is no way that you couldn't hear me. That is not how you treat someone, especially one of your friends."
You didn't realize that she would care that much if you just walked away in the middle of a conversation. She is clearly angry, and she has a whole mob of people behind her that, if possible, look even angrier.
**What should you do?**
[[Give a sincere apology]]
[[Make a run for it]]**Hello! Welcome to the Internet!**
What is the Internet, you ask? Oh, the Internet is a magical place full of information and inspiration.
Are you seeking for answers? Then you're in the right spot. The Internet is one of, if not the best, places to go to find all kinds of answers to your questions.
To get your questions answered, go ahead and search for something!
<img src="https://callstack.github.io/react-native-paper/screenshots/searchbar.png" width="850" height="300">
[[Start researching]]"His name is really hard to pronounce. It was a Russian psychologist, and I had to look up how to spell his name every time I wrote it for my paper."
"Oh, that's okay! Do you remember the name of his experiment? I could use that to look him up."
Sally just won't give up.
You could say that you don't remember and just hope that she drops it. You could also say yes, but have to make something up again.
**What do you want to say?**
[[Yes]]
[[No]]"I don't think you would actually want to know. He had to kill all of the seals in order to study them. It's really sad stuff."
"Oh, wow. That does sound sad. It must have been hard to research about that."
"Yeah. I'm sorry, but I don't really want to talk about it anymore. It just saddens me so much about what happened to all of those sheep..." You cover your face and try to start crying. Sally begins to comfort you.
"Wait a minute. Did you just say sheep? Didn't you say seals earlier?"
"Oh. Yeah, I said seals. I guess I just got so upset that I couldn't think clearly," you say.
"Okay, but I think I have another theory, too," Sally says. She figured it out. She must have figured it out.
"Oh, cool. What's your theory?" you ask nervously.
"You didn't write your paper, //and// you've been lying to me this entire time."
"What? No..." Sally looks at you disapprovingly. "Okay, okay. I've been lying to you," you say.
"So... I was right? You haven't written your paper yet?"
"Yes. I haven't written my paper yet."
"Well, I'll let you go so you can get to work on it. You don't have very much time."
[[Get to work]]"Let's go to your room, Sally. If I go to my room, I'll probably just pass out on the bed instead of doing any work."
"Okay, good call. My building is this way," she says. Sally checks her watch, and nods. "We don't have very much time to do research and write this paper, but I think we can do it."
"Thanks, Sally! I appreciate the help."
"So, have you started the paper at all yet?"
"Umm... no. I haven't even looked at the directions yet. I didn't know that the paper was about a famous psychologist until you mentioned it earlier."
"Oh, wow. So while we're walking, maybe we could brainstorm some ideas," she says. "First things first, is there a psychologist that you're even just a little interested in learning about?"
"I don't know... the famous psychologist that researched seals seems pretty cool to me." You and Sally laugh for a moment, and then you both walk into her room.
Sally's room is a mess. There is trash everywhere. Her bed is unmade. There is a horrible smell that you can't really pinpoint where it is coming from. Her desk is just a jumble of papers, folders, and books. A computer monitor is poking out from underneath the pile of school work, but its keyboard is buried.
"Okay, let's get to work!" Sally says as she just shoves all of the papers onto the floor. A to-go box from a restaurant with some kind of food in it falls to the floor as well. "Oh, that's where that went!" she laughs as she takes a bite out of the old food.
You cannot work in this environment.
"I can't believe I forgot that I don't have my laptop with me," you say. "I just remembered that I did make a little outline for this paper a few weeks ago. It's been so long, I completely forgot about it. I might just go back to my room and work on the paper there."
"Oh, okay! I can come with you," Sally says as she chews the old food that was rotting on her desk. The food was so old that it was unrecognizable and nearly impossible to tell what it used to be. All you know is that the horrible stench in the room was coming from whatever she's eating. Hopefully the stench doesn't linger in your room if she comes over.
**What are you going to do?**
[[Go back to your room with Sally]]
[[Go back by yourself]]"Let's go to my room. I almost forgot that my laptop is there, and not in my bag," you say.
"Great! Let's go," Sallys says.
You walk to your room with Sally and she asks you questions about your paper.
"So, have you started the paper at all yet?" she asks.
"Umm...
"Not sure. I can't really think of anyone off of the top of my head. My room is in this building," you say as you walk toward the building.
"Okay, I think I have a plan for you to finish your paper in time," Sally says. "First, we're going to do some quick research to find some famous psychologists. It shouldn't take more than like 10 minutes. Then, we're going to write a quick outline for the paper. Once we get the outline done, we can fill in all of the rest. How does that sound?"
"That sounds great, but the only thing I'm worried about is time. You said it took you six hours to write the paper, but we don't even have three hours."
"Yeah... but I didn't have someone helping me write it who had already written the paper, so hopefully it won't take more than two hours."
"Thank you so much, Sally! My room is this way," you say as you walk down the hallway.
"All right," Sally says, "Open your laptop, and let's get started!"
[[Open the Internet.]] You bang on the glass door until the person turns around. They give you a dirty look, gesture you to be quiet, and then go back to reading a book.
Well, that didn't work. There's got to be more than just that one person in there. Maybe if you wait long enough, someone will come out of the library, and then let you in.
**What are you going to do?**
[[Wait for someone to come out of the library.]]
[[Just leave and go to your room.]] You decide to just go back to your room. You have your laptop there, anyway. It's easier to just open your laptop than to try to log in and remember your password in the library.
You walk back to your room and open your laptop. It's time to get to work!
[[Open the Internet.]] You wait outside the library for fifteen minutes, but no one has left the building yet. Sally walks by and starts up a conversation with you.
"Hey, so this is where you ran off to. What are you doing just standing outside of the library? You know it's closed, right?"
"No, the library is not closed," you reply.
"Yes. It is closed," she walks over and tries to open the door. The door doesn't budge. "That's why the door is locked."
"Well, how come that person is in there, then?" you point to the person reading the book inside.
"That's a librarian, and they can stay in there for as long as they want. What are you doing trying to get into the library this late at night, anyway?"
You decide to just tell Sally the truth. "Well, I kind of forgot to write my paper for psychology..."
"I knew it! I knew that seals didn't have anything to do with famous psychologists. Oh wait. You haven't written your paper yet," she glances down at her watch. "We still have time," she says, "let's go write a paper!"
"Wait-you're really going to help me?"
"Yeah, let's go. There is no point in sitting out here, where do you want to go?"
[[Sally's room]]
[[Your room]] "Yes, I do remember the name of the experiment! It's called the... uh... seals... and... uh... seals and escalators experiment! The experiment was called seals and escalators."
Sally gives you the look again that she gave you when you said seals the first time.
"Seals... and escalators...? What kind of experiment is that?"
"Um... they got a group of seals, and they... uh... tested... whether or not they could... uh... figure out how an escalator works. Yeah, that's what it was."
She clearly doesn't believe you at first, but then Sally starts to think and wonder if maybe this is a real thing.
"So let me get this straight... seals were tested on whether or not they have the ability to understand how an escalator works? What does that have to do with anything?"
"Well, it's kind of like a social experiment with the seals. There are some seals that are taught how to use the escalators in advance. Of course, these are not just any kind of escalators, but escalators--for seals! But anyway, there were two groups of seals: a group with some seals that were already taught how to use the escalator, and another group where none of them knew how to use it."
"This sounds ridiculous, but then again, some of the other experiments that we learned about in class have been pretty strange..." She actually believes you! You two talk a little more about the different psychologists and experiments and studies that you've talked about in class.
You get a notification on your phone and check the time while you look at the notification. //It's 10:06pm. I now have just under two hours to write my paper!// you think to yourself.
**What should you do?**
[[Get to work]]
[[Keep hanging out]]"No, sorry, Sally. I don't remember the name of the experiment," you say.
"Oh, okay. Did you really not pay that much attention while you were writing your paper? It made sense that you didn't really know how to pronounce the psychologist's name, but to forget the name of the experiment? That's a little ridiculous."
You start to get nervous as Sally begins to uncover the truth.
"Yeah... I guess I just have a horrible memory," you pause for a second, and then start looking at Sally strangely. "Who are you, again? And how did I get here?" You pretend to be extremely confused, but Sally doesn't think it's funny.
"Oh, come on. I just genuinely want to learn about this really cool psychologist that you studied. Do you really not remember, or did you never know in the first place?"
"What do you mean? Of course I knew the name of the experiment, I just can't recall it at the moment," you say nervously.
"I just have the feeling that you haven't done any research or written your paper yet. I could be wrong, though, and you could just have a really bad memory," Sally says. You stand in shock, not really knowing what to do. How did she figure it out? Was my coverup really that bad?
"Ummm...Sally, I'm just going to skip all of the me denying and you arguing with me to save us some time, okay? Honestly, I haven't written my paper, or done any of the research yet. No work whatsoever," you say.
"I knew it!" Sally exclaims. "Ha! I knew that seals weren't connected to any famous psychologists. You probably couldn't tell, but I was going crazy trying to figure out that connection."
"You never know, there might be some kind of connection, we just might have to do some digging, and--" you start getting excited about a psychologist who might have studied seals, but then Sally cuts you off.
"Wait a minute. You haven't written your paper yet??"
"...no," you say.
"Well, what are you doing just sitting around?! Let's go write this paper!"
"Wait, you're going to help me?"
"Yeah, duh. You need to get this thing done, and you're obviously not going to get it done in time working by yourself. So, come on, let's move!"
**Where do you want to go?**
[[Sally's room]]
[[Your room]] You keep hanging out with your friends, and watch as the time inches closer and closer to midnight.
It's getting late, and while you've been having a good time with your friends, you can't help but worry about your paper. You don't have enough time to finish it, so I guess you have no choice but to just forget about it.
//It's too late to write it now,// you think to yourself.//I guess I'll just enjoy the rest of the night and deal with the consequences in the morning.//
You fall asleep in your friends' room and wake up disoriented the next morning.
"What time is it?" you say to yourself, "and where am I?" You start remembering that you were hanging out with your friends all night and decided to not write your paper. //Oh well,// you think to yourself. //Maybe I'll write the next paper.//
THE ENDYou go back to your room and open your laptop.
**What are you going to do?**
[[Open the Internet.]] "Well? Are you just going to stand there? What are you doing?" Sally asks you.
"Sally, I need to apologize. I should have never just left you in the middle of our conversation. It wasn't right. I left because I haven't actually written my paper yet. I know it's due in like two hours, but I still haven't written it. I was embarassed, so I lied. I didn't know how to answer your questions because there is no famous psychologist, that I know of, that studies seals. I'm sorry, Sally."
Sally starts laughing, and then her posse starts laughing as well. "Oh, you're so screwed," she says. "You'll never get that paper done in time. I would have offered to help you if you would have told me the truth earlier rather than just walking away from me. Now, I'm not going to help you, though. I'm sorry, but I think this is your own fault. Good luck turning in that paper on time..."
Sally walks away, and the group follows her. You're alone in the hallway and have nothing to do except start your paper. //Is it too late to start my paper now?// You think to yourself and consider your options.
**What are you going to do?**
[[Get to work]]
[[Do nothing]]"Well? Are you just going to stand there? What are you doing?" Sally asks you.
"Oh, me? I'm just going to--" you sprint over to the stairwell and start running down the stairs. The posse is not far behind you. You slide down the railing, and jump off when you get to the ground floor.
Sprinting down the hallway, you fly through the exit, and take off. It's super dark outside, especially because you were just under the bright lights inside building. Your eyes adjust surprisingly well in a short amount of time.
You don't want to turn around to check if the mob is still running after you. You also don't have to because you could probably hear their footsteps from a mile away. They seem to be getting closer.
You probably can't outrun them forever since some of them are varsity athletes, but I guess you could try.
**What are you going to do?**
[[Keep running]]
[[Find a place to hide]]**Are you //sure// you want to do nothing?**
[[Yes, do nothing]]
[[Get to work]]You try to keep running from the mob that's chasing after you. Their footsteps are getting louder and louder behind you. They still seem to be far enough away, and you have adrenaline running through your veins. You could run all night! Nothing can stop you!
You fall to the ground from tripping over a fallen tree branch. The posse approaches you, and a big guy pulls you up off of the ground.
"What made you think that just walking away from someone would be a good idea? It's really rude," the big guy says. Another guy walks over and pushes you back to the ground.
"This is how Sally felt when you just walked away from her," he says as he stands over you. A third guy walks over, but just as he's about to say something, a bright light is shined in your direction.
"Hey! Leave the kid alone!" a man yells. The mob scatters, but you still lay on the ground. A security officer walks over, and helps you up off the ground.
"Thanks, officer. Things were starting to get a little too intense for me," you chuckle a little bit.
"I'm glad you find some kind of humor in this situation," he says, "What did those guys want anyway?"
"I don't know, sir. They just started chasing me."
"Oh, wow. Such crazy kids," he shakes his head.
"Yeah... well, anyway. Thanks again, I'm sure you have other fights to break up."
"I'm glad I could help. Stay safe tonight," he says as he walks away.
Well, that was lucky! You should probably get started on your paper now before it's too late.
**What are you going to do?**
[[Get to work]]
[[Do nothing]] You start running toward an area where there are a lot of places to hide. There are buildings all around you, so you decide to turn left and try to lose some of the guts chasing after you.
"WHERE DID THEY GO?" you hear someone yell. There are still a few people behind you, so you make a sharp turn into an alley and hide around the corner. Just as you hoped, they didn't see you turn. You watch as the mob of angry college students runs right past you.
You didn't realize that that was something that could actually work in real life. You had seen it done in a lot of movies, but even though it seemed ridiculous, you decided to try it anyway. But hey, it worked.
You wait behind the corner for a few minutes until you can't hear the mob anymore. You cautiously step out from the corner and look to your left and right.
No one on the left...
No one on the right...
The coast is clear!
You walk back toward your room and give a sigh of relief. You won't have to deal with those guys for the rest of the night. (Tomorrow might be a different story, though)
It's late, but you need to decide whether or not to work on your paper.
**What are you going to do?**
[[Get to work]]
[[Do nothing]] "You want to come with me?" you ask her.
"Yeah, if you don't mind me helping, of course."
"Oh, no. I don't mind at all. I really appreciate you helping me!" You start leading the way to your room and talk with Sally.
[[Open the Internet.]] "Thanks for the offer, Sally, but I think I'm just going to go back by myself," you say. The stench of her room is starting to make you lightheaded.
"Okay, that's fine! Just call me if you need any help with the paper," she says. You smile, and get out of her room as fast as you can. You shut the door behind you and take a deep breath of the fresh air in the hallway.
You would have never guessed that Sally's room was such a mess. The worst part, though, had to be when she ate the mysterious rotting food that was on her desk. Good luck getting that image out of your head!
It's time to get out of there and head back to your room. You have a lot of work to do and not nearly enough time!
[[Get to work]] The research doesn't take nearly as long as Sally said that it would take. You figure out who to research, you learn all about them, and write about it.
You finish your paper with some time to spare, so you look it over. //This paper isn't too bad for me starting it so late,//you think to yourself. It's ready to turn in, and you couldn't be more relieved.
[[Submit your paper]]Your paper was successfully submitted to your professor!
Congratulations, you survived through procrastination. Good luck on your next paper!
NOTE - start papers //before// the night that they're due
THE ENDYou walk back to you room and fall asleep immediately.
You wake up in the morning, feeling refreshed. You didn't write your paper, but you sure did get a good night's sleep.
No regrets.
THE END
↶↷It's Friday night, and you're having a great time with your friends.
I'm glad that I haven't had anything that bad happen to me. I just can't help but feel like I'm forgetting something, though, you think to yourself.
"General psych... with Dr. Mackitosh." You begin to realize that you did forget to do something, and you're just now realizing what it is.
You forgot to write your paper! It's due in just over three hours.
What are you going to do?
Get to work!
Do it later.
