📖 How to Play Chess
Each piece moves a different way. Capture the enemy King ♔/♚ to win!

Pawn
Moves forward 1 square. From its starting row it can move 2 squares. Captures by moving diagonally forward. If it reaches the other end of the board, it auto-promotes to a Queen!

Knight
Jumps in an L-shape: 2 squares one way, then 1 square perpendicular. The Knight is the only piece that can jump over other pieces!

Bishop
Moves any number of squares diagonally. Each Bishop stays on its starting color forever (one is dark-squared, one is light-squared).

Rook
Moves any number of squares straight — horizontally or vertically. Like a tank!

Queen
The most powerful piece! Moves any number of squares in any direction — straight or diagonal. (Combines Rook + Bishop powers.)
♚
King
Moves only 1 square at a time, in any direction. Protect your King at all costs! If it gets captured, you lose.
💡 Tips for beginners:
• Click a piece to select it. Green dots show where it can move. Red squares show pieces it can capture.
• Click again to move it (or click a different piece to switch).
• Move a Pawn out first to free up your Bishops and Queen.
• Get your Knights out early — they jump over your pawns!
• Try to control the middle of the board.
