Rain beads and streaks down the other side, inches from your forehead, and you realise your mouth is dry. There is blood in the carpet, and who knows what else. Blood in the bedsheets. Most don't last more than five. Her hair is scraped back into a formal bun in a way that reminds you of a stern schoolteacher – an impression which, given the doll's purpose, you have no reason to believe is accidental. Still, there's something uncomfortably childlike about her totally vacant stare, which follows you closely and without distraction.

The body is on its back, his feet by the foot of the bed. With his impressive height, his extended arms actually reach a fair way across the room.
