"Drinks tonight at Kelele Lounge. 6pm ;)"
[["Sure"]]Kelele lounge has a great view of the Spirit Plaza.
Despite only being 95 stories high, Spirit Plaza stands out in the city you live in. Not even in the top 100 tallest buildings in the world (you had checked the rankings years ago, and back then it had been 143rd, now it was probably lower, what with a few more high rises being built), but it was so beautiful. Especially with the hacked grafitti streaming on its massive LED screen windows.
It is 5.50. You were early. You are always early.
[[Order a drink as you wait.]]
[[Watch the digital graffitti painting the Spirit Plaza.]]Wave at the waiter.
- Let the player order a drink
With your drink ordered. You wait for your friend and watch the tower.
[[Watch the digital graffitti painting the Spirit Plaza.]] The plaza lights up the area around it with all the colours emited from it's screens.
"There's probably a grafitti battle happening on one of the websites." A randomman tells you.
You look at him.
"Probably." You respond.
You go back to watching the lights and waiting for your friend.
The man sites opposite you.
"Hi, I'm Ethan." He introduces himself.

Hello and welcome to this short interactive narrative. It is a short exerpt of a larger ongoing narrative that will be updated in the future, but for now, have this short part of the story.
You play as a character called Bekiru (Kiri, Kiki or Ru for short). She is an engineer who specializies in the care, maintenance and evolution of Plant-Based Large Language Models called TREE's.
You are currently on an illegal and secret space mission to save some space colonies that are in crisis.
Your job on the ship is to keep ADAM, the ships main utility management and navigation system TREE, functional. Without ADAM you and your team will get lost in space and the ship will deteriorate until it becomes uninhabitable.
This narrative covers 3 days aboard the ship.

Number 3 has some dark spots on it's leaves. They are topical though, not indicative of a blight. The restof the plant is healthy. You carefully prune the damaged leaves and check for any other signs of disease or pests.
After some checking, you find that all the seeds are fine.

Annie and Kim watch in silence, before Kim goes, "I'm thinking pasta for the weekly meal."
Annie looks excited at the prospect. Ethan replies, "Whatever you make will be great." But he is smiling and does slow down the speed with which he is shoving food down his throat. You laugh.

You nod. "It's just hard to remember that when I am panicking."
"Yes. But it important to not beat yourself up for panicking. Your reactions come from somewhere. Let's look at the cognitive model again."

<<set $EL to Math.clamp($EL -1, 0, 10)>>Thoughts - Feelings - Actions you had drawn in a triangle on the first page.

"ADAM's network clarity was low because I forgot to increase the phosophorus ratio in the NPK mix back up to 10:10:10 now that he is flowering."
"And what thought passed through your mind after that event?"
"That I was an idiot, And that I was going to get everybody killed."
"And is that thought 100% true, 0% true or somewhere in between?"
You take a few seconds to think before you finally respond. "Somewhere in between."
"It is important to remember that your anxiety and depression are giving you a distorted perception of your reality. Let's look at your schema."

You look at the circle.
"Turn the page and write down a list of things that you do well as an excercise in remiding yourself of your own competence and abilities."
You turn the page and start writing the list that Dr Lincoln asks for.
"You are a competent engineer, or you would not be on this mission.
You are good at taking care of TREE's in your stewrdship.
You are capable of recovering from your mistakes as you continue to do every day of your life."
"Good job Kiru." He says after a pause. "[[Let's move to the next item on the agenda.]]"
<<set $EL to Math.clamp($EL +1, 0, 10)>>"I want to work on a plan to take better care of ADAM." You tell Dr Lincoln's recording.
"And what does that entail?" The recording asks.
You think about what ADAM needs.
"More attention." You finally say.
"That's too broad Kiru. Remember that specifcity is key."
You sigh. "What causes the most anxiety about the task?" Dr Lincoln asks after you have been silent for too long.
"That I drop the ball and kill everyone." You admit.
"That sounds like all or nothing thinking, Kiru. You know that that isn't helpful or honest. That is the depression and anxiety speaking."
You stay silent for a few more moments as you think about it.
"Let's reframe the issue. Why is the system so dependent on EVE and what specifically is the system dependent on EVE for?"
Hearing Dr Lincoln mention EVE throws you for a loop, but he had recorded these sessions for you on Earth where EVE had been your main responsibility.

<<set $EL to Math.clamp($EL -1, 0, 10)>>"ADAM has all the data on where we are going and the best trajectory for how to get there."

"Maybe not." You finally admit. "But I need to be sure about the backup systems before I can relax."
"That sounds like an item that you can put on your action plan for the week ahead."
You write it down. Check back up systems for navigation and utility.
"[[So to summarise?]]" Dr Lincoln asks.
<<set $EL to Math.clamp($EL -1, 0, 10)>>"I am a competent and capable individual who has accomplished all the tasks I set out for myself this week. When I panic, I need to remember that while the emotion is real in the moment, I can fix my mistakes."

You look at the woven bracelet on your right wrist.
"The therapy is not about eliminating negative emotions, it is about learning how to accept and process the emotions."
You take a deep breath.
"What will you put on your action plan?" Dr Lincoln asks.
"Daily check in's with ADAM's data and systems."
"Is that a sustainable goal? Or are you setting yourself up for failure."
"It's sustainable as long as I minimize my other tasks."
It's doable. 3 tasks a day. 2 lab tasks like today and a separate ADAM location task.
"Okay, but if you feel overwhelmed, remember that you can adjust the tasks accordingly to increase your chance of success. No one thinks that you are stupid because you ask question.
You take a deep breath. You knock on the cockpit door.
"Annie?" You ask through the door. You hear some shuffling behind the door before Annie responds.
"[[Come in]]." She answers. You enter the room.
She's sitting at the console looking at one of the screens. A light is blinking and she's adjusting one of the dials on the console slowly, before flipping 3 switched sequentially. She finally turns to you with a smile.
"What's up?" She asks casually.
"I juat wanted to ask about the navigation systems." You respond.
"Crap, I forgot that I was supposed to find you." This surprises you x2 supposedly made peoples memory perfect, but then you rmember that she probably means that she got so caught up in work that she forgot the time.

"Are you okay?" You ask her.
"Yeah." She says with an easy enough smile.
"Well, you know I'm always here if you want someone to talk to." You state.
She looks at you for a few beats. "I know Ru." She says with a smile.
"So let's get into ADAM and the navigation system. ADAM is the main data source that the map uses to navigate through space because of all the DATA that he has from EVE."
"I understand that part. What I didn't understand is the backups that you mentioned?"
"Ah, yeah, the back up is just a local harddrive with the key spatial navigation data on it." She says. "So even if ADAM's netweork clarity was to drop to less than 30%, we won't be flying blind."
You smile. "Great. That's a massive weight off my chest."
Annie laughs. "Yeah. Kim, Talia and James set it up as a back up on earth before we launched."
"[[Where was I when all the prelaunch work was being done]]?" You jokingly ask her.She laughs, "Probably doing physical space training with me." She says. "Honestly, though, you're a TREE engineer, and I'm pilot and astronaut, we did not need to be involved with the ship construction chaos."
"Well. That's one relief." You say.
Then you pause as you think about your panic yesterday.
"Sorry I snapped at you." You state after mulling it over. "That wasn't right. Just cause I was stressed does not mean I should have taken it out on you."
"It's okay." Annie says with a smile.
"No it's not." You state. "I need to get a better grasp of my own emotions." You tell her.
"[[It's human Ru.]]"
<<set $EL to Math.clamp($EL +1, 0, 10)>>"All the same. I'll try be better about keeping my emotions in check."
"Sure." Annie agrees easily. There's a beat where you think Annie is going to say something, but then sha just nods and turns back to the console.
"Well, let me get back to the commissary. I need to check with Kim on some things."
"Wait." Annie says.
"Yeah?"
"How are you actually handling it?" She turns and finally asks you.
"[[Handling what?]]"
<<set $EL to Math.clamp($EL +1, 0, 10)>>"This mission."
You shrug. "Okay, I guess. ADAM isn't dead yet, so I'll take that as a win." You're trying for levity. You hope it works.
"I mean, you don't even take x2."
You think about it.
1) Your notebook in your pocket with a therapy note stuck to the inside of the front cover.
2) Your daily lists that you have to write down and allocate time and anticipate energy for.
3) The bracelet on your wrist that forces you to slow down and evaluate the truth of your automatic thoughts.
4) The 20TB harddrive filled with notes, textbooks and recordings from Univeristy until now on everything there is to know about SEED's and TREE's.
"I have some systems I set up on Earth that I am using to function right now." You admit.
"Like what?" She asks.
"Why?" You ask without thinking. She blinks at you. "I mean which systems do you want to know about and why. So that I don't tell you about unneccessary things." You clarify.
"[[ADAM for example.]] How do you stay on top of everything you need to do for him as the sole ADAM expert of the ship?"You think about this.
"Well I made ADAM, so I guess, I know him best?" You tell her. "And I have all the textbooks I ever read, papers I ever referenced, talks I ever heard and videos I ever watched on a harddrive that I can access anytime I need to."
You shrug. You had to stop taking x2 as a child due to an allergic reaction, so you're used to creating systems to keep up with everyone else.
Annie looks contemplative. "So you're just always reading?"
"No, that's Ethan." You state and Annie laughs.
"It's more like, I'm aware that I con't hold all this information in, so I don't try. I reference everything I do against the information I have access to."
Annie nods.
"Good talk." She says. "See you at dinner?"
"Yeah, see you then." You say before heading out to [[find Kim]].

<<set $EL to Math.clamp($EL +2, 0, 10)>>You decide to get straight to the point.
"Is there a backup plan if ADAM fails as an assistance to the life support system?" You ask bluntly.
Kim pauses and thinks. He then opens his tablet and looks at some information on it.
A few moments pass before he looks up at you.
"So, the short answer is kinda, the long answer is no."
You take a deep breath.
"The life support system in this space craft is experimental, [[the first of it's kind]]."
<<set $EL to Math.clamp($EL -1, 0, 10)>>"Do you want the long story or the short story?"
"[[Long story]]."
"[[Short story]].""This whole space ship was built around ADAM. He is the core of our life support and navigation and without him we would not survive on the space ship. ADAM is not the only part of our life support system, but he is the cornerstone of how we created the life support system.
There is a back up, but the back up is us going into cryo and being sent in the vague direction of Earth."
"That was still pretty short." You think for a bit. "Can I ask for the longer version now?"
"No." Kim says while laughing.
"The point is, we have cryosleep tubes coded with the location of Earth and enough fuel to get us back home, but that's it. Without ADAM there is no ship or mission."
"Good chat." You say as you feel your anxiety settle like a stone in your gut and stay there.

You want to scoff, but also, you kmow Kim. He answered as kindly as he could. The fact of the matter was that ADAM needed to be okay for the mission to succeed. There's no way to mince those words.
"Seriously." He says and his voice sterner now.
"Sit down." He states.
It takes you a few moments of standing there in a mild state of panic before [[you sit back down]].
<<set $EL to Math.clamp($EL -1, 0, 10)>>"If ADAM dies, we head home." He says. "We don't die."
"But the mission-"
"The mission has a snow balls chance in hell of actually being successful." He says bluntly. "And it's not a mission."
You stare at your bracelet. People will die is you can't keep ADAM alive. Your incompetence will get people killed, is the thought running through your head. You try to evaluate it but all you can think is that it is 100% true.
"Kiki." Kim says softly. "You and Ethan have never done space missions before, so you wouldn't know this, but most space missions in the last 100 years have been failures."
"I know that. I worked for IBSE too you know." You say, trying to play for humor.
"But you don't know, because you weren't there." Kim looks serious for once. "IBSE didn't publish when ships had air lock failures that led to emergency evacuations, or when the ships sun shields failed and people burned to a crisp in seconds." You grimace when you hear this. IBSE was a weird organisation. Despite being the International Board of Space Exploration, they always seemed to keep their cards close to the chest.
"A successful mission is one where the whole crew returns home unscathed." Kim states. "We built this ship with the cryopod contingency, because we anticipated the possibility that ADAM may not survive the whole trip."
"[[So you set us up to fail]]."
<<set $EL to Math.clamp($EL -1, 0, 10)>>"No." Kim said firmly. "What I'm trying to say is that, we are doing what no one else is willing to do. Not even IBSE with it's wealth of resources and personnel. We're out here trying to save lives. Trying."
Kim looks you in the eye. "If we fail, we go back home and we get to hold our heads up high and say that we tried to do better for the colonies. No one else, no one else, can say that."
You look at Kim. "So you anticipated ADAM dying?" You confirm. He definitely thinks that you are incompetent. Your position on this ship was a fluke, he didn-
"No." Kim says simply. "I think that the mission will be a success, or I wouldn't have captained the mission."
"But you just said-"
"I said if." Kim smiles. "If we fail. But we're doing everything that we can to avoid that."
You look at the walls of the commissary. You're hungry, you realize.
"Kiki. We set out in an experimental aircraft, against IBSE approval, hiding our take off from the International Council for Space Travel, on a secret mission to save the lives of thousands of people on space colonies that haven't had contact with Earth in over a century. No matter what happens, this mission is not a failure."
[[You finally nod]].
<<set $EL to Math.clamp($EL -1, 0, 10)>>"I think my blood sugar is low." You finally respond.
Kim laughs. He gets up and head to the food dispenser and gets 2 trays of food.
You look at your bracelet.
I am not going to get people killed, you think. They won't let themselves die that easily. That thought feels closer to 100% true.
Kim brings you a tray as Ethan enters the room. He looks a little manic but his smile is genuine.
"Keek's, Kim." He says with a tonne of energy.
Annie enters after him. "Wait, how am the last person here?" She asks. "It's still so early. Are you all skivving off work?" She asks with a smile.
"Yes." Kim answers before starting on his meal. "It's been a long day, let's wrap work early and hang out."
"OOhhhh, a movie night!" Annie says excitedly.

The commissary is through the main door at the end of the hall.
The commissary is a large room, compared to the sleep pods, with a kitchenette, some seating arranged around a table and several couches and hammocks around a relaxation zone that has some board and video games, a large screen and some speakers.
It is painted a "soothing" shade of soft yellow, but within weeks of being in space, everyone put posters all over the walls filled with memes and pop culture references.
The only part of the room that still has it's original off-yellow colouring is the kitchen and that was only because we decided that it may be a fire hazard to put the posters we brought up.
Overall the space is quite relaxing and even has some desks and chairs for working in one corner for when you get tired of working alone or want to body double with some one.
[[Back to main passage|Breakfast Day 1]]
The center of the ship houses the main TREE that is the backbone of this ship, ADAM.
Getting to ADAM requires going into the center of the ship. Through the commissary, past the pilot cockpit where Annie works, past the captain suite, which holds the main console for all of the utility systems on the ship and finally, past the experimental SEED nursery, which is the closest space to ADAM but still needs it's own specialized biome for Ethan's research.
Getting to ADAM needs you to go through the ADAM lab.
Once you open the door to ADAM's biome, you are greeted by the sight of him.
ADAM is still technically a sapling at 18 months old, but he is already 15m tall and quite large around his trunk, coming in at a trunk diameter of around 3m.
But he is still quite small compared to his mother EVE, who was over 150m and had a 30m trunk diameter the last time you saw her.
