ixpix: turn AI pixel art into true pixel art

Chroma key removes one color everywhere, even inside sprites.

Flood spreads from the corners and your eyedropper points, so the same color inside an outline stays.

Checker is for checkerboard and other multi-color backgrounds. If it eats gray details, lower Tolerance; if a halo is left, raise Defringe.

Snap lines to edges

Cell is the size of one art pixel in source pixels. Offset is where the first grid line starts.

Auto detects the grid and changes the values only when it’s confident.

Shift + drag on the source moves the grid. Arrow keys nudge a value by 0.01, or 0.1 with Shift.

Snap lines to edges helps when the pixel size drifts across the image.

Applied after downscaling and before the palette, so they also change which colors end up in it.

As is keeps the downscaled colors. Auto builds a palette from the image. Library maps colors to a built-in palette or to your own .hex or .gpl file (you can drop it onto the window).

Suggest color count is a starting point: it works well for sprites and often goes too low on detailed scenes.

The swatches show the colors actually used, and Save .hex exports them.

Dithering

Strength, %

Mixes two palette colors where an in-between shade is missing. Needs a palette.

Bayer gives a steady pattern that suits animation. Floyd-Steinberg is smoother but shimmers between frames. Most sprites look better without dithering.

Padding, px

Stray pixels are lone specks left by JPEG noise. Alpha holes are transparent gaps inside a sprite.

If you use an outline, keep Padding at 1 px or more so it has room.

Outline adds a 1 px border around the sprite, by default in its darkest color, so the palette doesn’t grow.

Dark edges darkens the sprite’s own edge pixels instead: the size stays the same and small details don’t merge.

Frames per second

Connected finds sprites as separate blobs and merges parts closer than Gap. Keep the gap smaller than the space between frames.

Frame grid splits the sheet into columns and rows. Use it when frames touch each other.

Click a box to exclude a sprite from export. Atlas packs all sprites into equal frames; Align to bottom keeps feet on one line so the animation doesn’t bounce.

View

0: fit to view
+ −: zoom in, zoom out
wheel: zoom to the point under the cursor
double-click: fit
drag: pan (the middle button works in any mode)

Zoom keys apply to the viewer under the cursor.

File

O: open image
Ctrl + V: paste image from clipboard
drop onto window: open an image or a .hex .gpl palette
× next to the name: close image; settings are kept

Settings save automatically and survive a reload. Save named sets under “Presets”.

Undo remembers 50 steps and covers the whole panel, including excluded sprites. A step is a finished action, not every frame of a slider drag. Opening or closing an image clears the history.

wheel over a field: same as arrows

Shortcuts are disabled while an input field has focus. Keyboard layout doesn’t matter.

Troubleshooting

grid not found: enter the cell size manually or set the result resolution
background not removed: use “Flood” instead of “Chroma key”, add points with the eyedropper, raise the ΔE tolerance
light fringe: raise “Defringe, ΔE”
frames merged: lower “Gap” under “Sprites”
