What We Kept

Someone told me this. I'm keeping it.

You're the one who keeps the record. An evening comes at you the way evenings do, in pieces. Nothing will tell you if you're right.

Five minutes. No score. No losing.

opening

one

It started over nothing. The salt, or the rent, or something from a week ago that only landed tonight. By the end she was standing and I was still sitting, which is the part I keep.

two

The phone rang at 11:40. I watched it ring. I had a reason then and I still have it now. I've never once used it.

three

In the morning, on the counter: her keys, or a receipt, or the note. One of those stayed there for a month.

the record

This is what I kept.

Kept the way I remember it. That's not the same as what happened.
