The Hacevís Launch Room is dark concrete, dimly illuminated by a lighting panel which takes up the entire ceiling. A transparent barrier separates you from the equally dim observation room, where Dr. Miramontes, the rest of the technicians, and a few other agents stand watching. In the center of the room is the Hacevís Device. Also known as the Hacevís Portal, this is the revolutionary technology at the center of the Hacevís Project. It allows travelers to skip forward in time, theoretically by years, although you've only ever traveled forward a few months. It is a large, metal ring, the machinery encased in the outer structure creating the time distortion in its center. You pass through to travel forward, and pass back through to travel back, as long as the connection is kept open. Its silhouette as familiar as an old friend.
Your heart is pounding as you face the hulking device. This isn't the first time you've been through it, of course, but it's the first time you'll be traveling more than a few months: the first time you aren't practically guaranteed to find your supervisors waiting for you, ready to ease the transition back and forth and run the usual battery of tests. You'll be displaced in time by 100 years. You have already donned your R&P Suit. Your suit is primarily the same grey as the walls of the Hacevís Facility, though flaps on your chest, forearms, and thighs can be pulled back to reveal bright, reflective orange. It is highly insulating, keeping you just slightly warmer than is truly comfortable, but you know you would be glad of that property were you to appear in a future where warmth and shelter were unexpectedly difficult to find. The helmet incorporates your communication headset and optional visual protection, as well as a connection to a 24 hour air supply. The likelihood of the future you enter placing you underwater, in intense radiation, inhospitable temperatures, or toxic atmosphere is negligible, but the suit provides at least temporary protection against such conditions. It weighs oddly on your body, along with your pack, the tubes of your air tank and the neck strap of your sensor Aside from your suit, this sensor is your most important asset in your travel into the future. It gives you environmental readings (such as atmospheric composition and radiation levels), a map of your immediate area (as it was in your original present, unfortunately, so there's no guarantee things haven't changed drastically), and the all important Potential Distortion Factor (PDF). Your headset crackles briefly and Dr. Miramontes confirms, "All readings normal. Everything you need is in your inventory and remember if you need instruction, check the mission dossier. You are clear to enter. Repeat, Control is a go."
