FIVE ROUNDS · TWO WAYS TO THINK

Two Tiny Pattern Challenges

Pick the middle of a scrambled set, or finish a number chain. No timer: the goal is to understand the pattern. Each challenge has five rounds and immediate explanations.

How to play

Find the middle: Sort the five displayed values mentally. Choose the third value: two values should be below it and two above it. These millisecond numbers are generated for a sorting exercise; they are not measurements or reference values.

Finish the chain: Read from the inner body toward the outer tail. A pickup joins the right-hand end. Only the last two equal values merge, and the rule repeats. Pick the number that collapses the displayed tail into the target tile.

Why these patterns are useful

A median describes the middle of an ordered set, so a single extreme value changes it less than it changes an average. A merge chain illustrates an ordered state: equal totals can have different available moves. After a pickup and m merges, an n-segment tail has n + 1 − m segments.

The Reaction Time Test records real visual cue responses in the browser. If you use it, retain all the rounds and the input method when interpreting a session. Our middle-value challenge is a separate arithmetic exercise, not a reaction test.

The Mergecoil puzzle at Snake 2048 adds continuous movement to the tail rule. A numerically good pickup still needs a safe route. Select Mergecoil for the chain examples; the site's Arena is a separate mode.
