The party host controls playback — everyone else follows automatically, with drift correction. Works in a normal tab and natively inside itch.io: no server, no downloads, nothing to configure.

Playback is host-controlled: only the host can play, pause, seek or change videos. Guests always follow the host.

Playback trouble? TubeTogether automatically tries YouTube's standard player, then the privacy (no-cookie) player. If YouTube has blocked a video from playing on other sites entirely, a fallback panel appears over the video with an “Open on YouTube” button at your party's exact timestamp — nobody gets stuck on an error screen.

Chat rooms

Hang out and talk — no video required. Separate from watch-party lobbies, with their own codes, filters and safety tools.
Unmoderated chat warning: TubeTogether does not monitor, record or moderate chat rooms — anyone with a room code can join, and people may not be who they claim. Never share personal info (real/full name, address, school or workplace, phone, email, socials, passwords, or your live location), never agree to meet in person, and leave + block anyone who makes you uncomfortable.

Public rooms

Open to everyone — the first person in becomes the host. If nobody's hosting yet, you can start the room.

Custom rooms are semi-private: only people with the code can join — but anyone who gets the code can pass it on. Share codes only with people you trust.

Rooms you've hosted or joined on this device. Guests can rejoin while the host is still online; hosts can re-open a room (you'll get a fresh code to share).

How “native itch.io online” works: this file auto-detects the itch.io embed, then uses WebRTC peer-to-peer (PeerJS public broker) for lobby sync — no game server to host, nothing for players to install. The host creates a code, guests connect straight to the host, and video state, chat, GIFs, polls and reactions broadcast peer-to-peer. Same-browser tabs also sync instantly, which is the fastest way to test it solo.

Publish: upload as index.html (HTML5 project, “played in the browser”, fullscreen embed on) and share the page.

Honest limits: playback uses YouTube's official embed, so it needs internet and respects each video's embed permissions (some music videos block third-party embeds — the player will say so, pick another). Peer-to-peer means the host should stay on a decent connection; if they close the tab, the room ends and guests can reconnect to a new host.
