A Twine Game by James Meek [[Click Here to start!]]On the slopes of a frozen mountain, lived Dawn. This young witch and her familiar, a baby dragon called Arcky sheltered from [[a wicked winter.]]Arcky had been very ill. Feverish and giving off an unusually hot glow from the gemstone at his neck, Dawn was [[very worried about him.]]“Maybe I can brew you something for the fever?” asked Dawn. [[“…arrf.” replied Arcky]], in the unintelligible noises he called a voice.Using an old recipe, Dawn began [[brewing a healing elixir.]]Dawn listed the ingredients as she prepared. “…A funky fungus picked under a full moon: check. A splash of orange juice (with the pulp): check. A handful of hair from that squirrel I found the other day there: [[check…”]][[“Now, what do I have here?”]] “There’s…drunken ox bile? Could work, might put that on the [[maybe pile?]]” “Or we could use this, a perfume I made out of snow and [[leftover teabags?]]"“Which should I use, [[I wonder?]]" “A horrid bit of [[ox bile]] or some of this [[questionable perfume?]]”“I think the drunken ox bile will do [[the trick]].”“Maybe the perfume will give it the [[kick you need?]]”“The potion is getting nice and thick now. [[Here Arcky, have a taste.]]”Arcky seemed better, but also a bit gassy. The unusual glow also continued. “I thought for sure that the potion would help. [[Think we need some help.]]” “Maybe the [[Ancestors will know?]]”“I think that whiff means it’s ready. Arcky, hold your nose and [[drink this.]]”Arcky seemed better, but also a bit sneezy. The unusual glow also continued. “I thought for sure that the potion would help. [[Think we need some help.]]"” Scooping up Arcky and [[popping her hat on…]]Dawn ventured out for answers to [[Arcky’s illness.]]Reaching the standing stones on the outskirts of her village, Dawn noticed something odd. “[[Look Arcky, twinkly lights!]]” exclaimed Dawn. [[“Hiss?!”]] responded Arcky, puzzled.“Well, [[they were there a second ago.]]” Dawn assured.[[“Hiss hiss!”]] suggests Arcky.Dawn sees it too. “Oh, you’re right! The masks seem like [[they’re watching...]]”[["Hmph!!"]] growled Arcky.[[“You didn’t say that?”]] Dawn asked back.[[“Hiss.”]] agreed Arcky, seemingly annoyed.“Well, how should I know? [[Use your words!]]” Dawn countered.[["Blech!"]] snapped Arcky“Language!" gasped Dawn. "Anyway, [[let’s take a closer look.]]”Dawn and Arcky cautiously approached. [[“Hello?”]] asked Dawn to the silent stones. A startling flash and a blur of motion [[answered the question.]]The Mask shot forward, circling Dawn. [[“HMM, YES? WHAT DO YOU WANT?”]] demanded the groggy mask. [[“Um, my name’s Dawn…”]] she answered, startled. “DAWN, IS IT? WHY DID YOU WAKE ME! YOU INTERUPTED [[A NIFTY DREAM!]]" questioned the mask, sulkily. How should Dawn answer this question? [[Tell the mask about Arcky]] or [[ask about the dream?]][[“Oh, this is my dragon, Arcky.”]] Dawn told the mask.“What was happening in [[the dream?]]” enquired Dawn.“WELL, I WAS DREAMING ABOUT A GIRL CALLED DAWN WAKING ME UP AND ASKING ME [[SILLY QUESTIONS!]]”“TRULY THIS CONVERSATION IS A DREAM COME TRUE, [[NOW WHAT DO YOU WANT?!]]" snapped the mask.Surprised by his sarcastic outburst, Dawn replied, “My dragon is ill; I was wondering if you could tell me [[what’s wrong?]]”“I’M A DISEMBODIED SPIRIT IN A MASK, [[NOT A VET!]]” it bellowed, trembling with what was likely rage. How should Dawn respond? [[“You could have been the spirit of a vet?”]] or [[“So, you can’t help?”]] "[[Does that mean you can't help?]]" asked Dawn, wondering if she had wasted her time coming here.“You could have been the spirit of a vet, [[looks can be deceiving!”]] said Dawn, matter-of-factly.“He’s been ill recently, and I was wondering if you could tell me [[what’s wrong?]]”“HOWEVER, I CAN POINT YOU TO SOME OTHER OF THESE [[BIG SCALEY BOYS!]]”“PERHAPS THEY CAN [[HELP?]]” suggested the mask.“YOU HAVE A POINT!" admitted the mask. "I ACTUALLY USED TO BE A FLORIST [[IF YOU MUST KNOW!]]” [[“Lovely.”]] added Dawn.“IT WAS, [[I MISS HAVING HANDS…]]” it said with a sigh. Which Dawn found odd, considering its lack of lungs or a body. The mask paused for a moment then continued. “ANYWAY! I CAN POINT YOU TO SOME OTHER DRAGONS THAT MAY BE ABLE TO [[HELP?]]”“Yes! [[Where can I find them?]]” asked Dawn, eagerly.“I KNOW OF TWO DRAGONS!" the mask exclaimed. "ONE OF THEM USED TO LIVE NEAR A [[WATERFALL TO THE EAST!]]”“HIS NAME WAS SPRING, A LIVELY BOY THAT ONE BUT I HEAR HE [[HASN’T BEEN HEARD FROM IN CENTURIES!]]”“THE SECOND WAS A PRICKLY OLD LAD THAT HIDES IN THE [[FOREST TO THE WEST!]]”“HIS NAME WAS AUTUMN! [[MAY NOT BE EAGER TO HELP YOU HOWEVER!]]” the mask added. Not confident about the helpfulness of these missing and reluctant dragons, Dawn asked “Are there any other dragons that would be [[easier to find?]]”“WELL, YES!" answered the mask before pausing to think. [[THERE IS A THIRD DRAGON, WINTER!]]” it continued.“HE’S VERY DANGEROUS, HOWEVER! [[STAY CLEAR IF YOU KNOW WHAT’S GOOD FOR YOU!]]” warned the mask.“[[HE’S RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS ENDLESS SNOW AND COLD!]]”How should Dawn respond? [[“He caused this winter?”]] or [[“How did you end up inside a mask?”]]“He caused [[this winter?]]” Dawn asked.“How did you end up [[inside a mask?]]” Dawn asked.“WHAT’S THAT?! NO QUESTIONS? GOOD, I’M GOING BACK TO SLEEP!! [[DON’T WAKE ME AGAIN!]]” The mask returned to its spot within the stone circle, lifeless once more.“Hiss.” remarked Arcky. “I know, right? Not what I had in mind but at least [[we have some leads now.]]” assured Dawn.“WHAT’S THAT?! NO QUESTIONS? GOOD, I’M GOING BACK TO SLEEP!! [[DON’T WAKE ME AGAIN!]]”[[“Who do you think we should look for, Arcky?”]]“Hiss.” answered Arcky. [[“That’s what I thought.”]] nodded Dawn. Who should Dawn and Arcky look for? [[Spring]] or [[Autumn?]]Dawn and Arcky traveled east to the waterfall. Upon arrival, [[Dawn realised why Spring hadn’t been seen for centuries.]] Somehow, [[Spring had been frozen within the waterfall.]]Noticing the glow from Arcky was flaring up again, [[Dawn realised the potion had seemingly worn-off.]] She could try and find Autumn but it wasn't clear if Arcky could get worse with travel. [[However…]]If Arcky could direct it, that glow could be used to [[thaw Spring from the waterfall?]]What should Dawn do? [[Look for Autumn]] or [[Try to thaw Spring]]Deciding that using Arcky's power is too much of a risk, Dawn chose to go in search of [[Autumn instead.]]The decision was made, [[Dawn can’t risk the journey back.]]Worried, Dawn asked “No pressure, feel free to say no but can you direct that glow of yours [[at the ice?]]”There’s a pause… “Arf!” answered Arcky, with a shaky confidence. [[“Nice!” replied Dawn]], also unsure. Presenting him to the wall of ice, Arcky began to shake. [[“Arcky, how you doing?” asked Dawn, nervously.]] As if in response, a light began to glow from Arcky like a beam! [[“You’re doing it!” exclaimed Dawn.]] Cracks began to form in the ice as it rapidly started to thaw. [[“Keep it up, you’re almost there!” chimed in Dawn.]] As Dawn finished cheering, she noticed the ice reforming, [[sealing the waterfall once more.]][[“Wait, what?-"]]Dawn was interrupted by a powerful and freezing gale, knocking her and Arcky from her feet and [[into the air!]]Engulfed in swirling blizzard, Dawn eyes adjusted enough to identify an icy shape at the [[centre of the storm.]]The shape resembled that of a giant head, a blood red pair of eyes set above a pair of icy jaws! [[Staring towards Dawn…]]Not Dawn, Arcky. A strong gust plucked Arcky from her arms and into the freezing chaos. [[“ARCKY!” screamed Dawn.]] The face seemed to grin with its mouth of jagged ice. The expression on its cold face seemingly saying: [[“THANK YOU!”]] [[Arcky vanished into the storm...]] Dawn plummeted down to the ground, her quest ending suddenly and with [[a spectacular failure…]][[Try Again?]]Return to [[menu]]? Dawn and Arcky traveled to the west. There they found themselves within [[an unusual forest]].Dawn and Arcky go back and begin travelling to the west. There they found themselves within [[an unusual forest.]]“Look at all these colours, Arcky!” remarked Dawn, observing the unusual orange and red leaves [[decorating the trees.]] “Look at all these colours, Arcky!” remarked Dawn, observing the unusual orange and red leaves [[decorating the trees]]. A moment later, a splintering rumble was heard nearby. [[As if something big was approaching]].Dawn turned to locate the source of the noise, only to be confronted by a strange tree. “Why does the tree look barer and uglier compared to the others?” [[Dawn mused to herself]].“WOW, RUDE!” responded [[a booming voice]].Dawn started at that, before shakily asking “[[Who said that]]?”“T’WAS I, THE BIG ‘UGLY’ TREE!! [[answered the tree, apparently]].“Um…sorry? I didn’t mean ugly, I meant interesting.” assured Dawn. [[Autumn grumbled at this]].“Are you believing that?” asked Dawn. “NOT ONE BIT, [[WHAT BRINGS YOU HERE]]?” snapped Autumn Dawn cleared her throat and answered, “So, Arcky here has been a bit poorly as of late and I was wondering if you could tell me [[what’s going on]]?” “ARCKY, IS IT? I BELIEVE I KNEW THAT LITTLE SPROG BY ANOTHER NAME ONCE!” rumbled Autumn, inspecting the small dragon. “[[Another name]]?” a baffled Dawn asked. “YES! HE ONCE WENT BY THE NAME OF [[SUMMER IN A PAST LIFE]]!”How should Dawn respond? “[[Ask about the dragon names]]?” or “[[Ask about past lives]]?” “[[Summer? Noticing a theme here]].” points out Dawn. "You mentioned something about [["past lives"?"]] enquired Dawn. It's hard to tell, but Autumn seems to roll his eyes at this. “WINTER, SPRING, SUMMER AND I ONCE TOOK TURNS AS [[GUARDIANS OF THESE LANDS]]!" “WHEN I WOULD DIE, WINTER WOULD TAKE MY PLACE! IN THAT TIME, I WOULD BE REBORN AND REGAIN MY STRENGTH, [[WAITING FOR MY TIME TO COME AGAIN]]!"“THIS WAS UNTIL WINTER DECIDED TO BANISH ME AND HOARD HIS POWER! HE REFUSED TO LET SPRING REPLACE HIM! TAKING TURNS, WE GUARD NATURE BY [[BENDING IT TO OUR WILL]]!” “YOUR “ARCKY”, IS THE EMBODIMENT OF SUN AND LIGHT, THE REINCARNATION OF SUMMER! THIS CYCLE HAS BEEN WARPED BY WINTER REFUSING TO LET SPRING TAKE HIS PLACE! THEY BATTLED; [[WINTER WON]]” “THIS IS WHY YOUR DRAGON IS SUFFERING, [[NATURE HAS BEEN CORRUPTED]]!!”What should Dawn ask about? “[[Helping Arcky]]?” or “[[Ending Winter]]?” “[[How can we help Arcky]]?” Dawn asked. “[[So, we have to end Winter]]?” Dawn asked“YOU MUST FIRST FIND SPRING; HE IS THE ONLY HOPE WE HAVE TO [[STOP WINTER]]!” barked Autumn.“I BELIEVE HE STILL LIVES! [[HERE TAKE THIS…]]”“YES, SPRING’S HELP WILL BE NEEDED TO [[STOP WINTER]] HOWEVER!” barked Autumn. “THIS STAFF IS ENCHANTED WITH A SLIVER OF MY POWER! [[IT CAN HEAL SPRING]], IF HE STILL LIVES!” assured Autumn.A moment later, a splintering rumble was heard nearby. [[SPRING MUST BE THE ONE TO STOP WINTER!]]” boomed Autumn.“YES, SPRING’S HELP WILL BE NEEDED TO [[STOP WINTER HOWEVER!]]” barked Autumn.“But I found Spring already, seems like he’s been [[frozen solid by Winter]].” said Dawn.“I SUSPECTED THIS MAY HAVE HAPPENED; IT MUST BE WHY HE [[NEVER REINCARNATED!]]” Autumn pondered to himself.“You say that…” Dawn stops to think. “…but Winter defeated Spring once before and we don’t even know if he’s [[still alive.]]”“Also, we don’t know how long Arcky has with [[his illness.]]”“What do you think, Arcky?” prodded Dawn. “Huff!” snuffled Arcky. Dawn sighed. [[“Noted.”]] Dawn considered which way to use the power granted by Autumn, eventually she decided to: [[Strengthen Arcky]] or [[Free Spring]]? Dawn made the decision to [[use the staff on Arcky.]]Dawn made the decision to [[go free Spring.]]The energy enveloped the little dragon and [[he began to glow with a burning aura.]]Arcky grew in both size and power, [[transforming into his Summer form.]]But had it cured Arcky’s illness? [[Was he strong enough to battle Winter?]]The light faded as the staff expelled [[the last of its magic.]]“[[YOU FOOL, YOU SCOUNDREL, YOU ABSOLUTE RASCAL, YOU-]]” roared Autumn, furious. How should Dawn respond? [[Tell Autumn to shut up]] or [[Tell Autumn he's rude!]]"[[Oi, shush!]]" snapped Dawn.“[[You’re being very rude right now.]]” snapped Dawn "[["SHUSH”?!]]” asked a bewildered Autumn. “Yeah, shush! We don’t need Spring’s help. [[We have Summer now.]]” announced Dawn.“THIS WON’T CURE HIM COMPLETELY; [[THE MAGIC WILL FADE EVENTUALLY!]]” warned Autumn.“Then we should get moving, [[where can we find Winter?]]” Dawn asked.“[[RUDE? YOU’VE DOOMED US YOU FOOL!]]” spat Autumn.“Like you said, we don’t need Spring’s help. [[We have Summer now.]]” announced Dawn.“HMMM, HE CAN USUALLY BE FOUND TO THE NORTH! BUT [[I DON’T AGREE WITH THIS PLAN!]]” rumbled Autumn.“How do you feel, Arcky? [[Think you can manage some flying?]]” asked Dawn, turning to her once small dragon.“[[Grumph!]]” rumbled Arcky.“I’ll take that as a yes." said Dawn. "Let’s go!” Leaving Autumn behind, [[Dawn and Arcky moved forward with their journey.]]Upon Arcky’s back, Dawn took to the sky. Flying amongst the clouds, [[this is the highest they had ever been.]] “AAAAAAAAAAAAGH!” screamed Dawn. “[[Hmmph.]]” mumbled Arcky in response. Moving north, [[the pair found Winter.]]Dawn had seen a couple dragons by this point, but [[Winter didn’t quite fit the typical image of one.]] A roiling mass of blizzard with giant chunks of ice in a strange approximation of a pair of wings made [[the monster’s body.]]Perched atop this icy storm, sat a pair of icy jaws with a set of red eyes. Landing nearby this frozen nightmare, [[Dawn watched as Arcky returned to the skies.]] Arcky confronted Winter, floating before him. “[[Surrender, Winter!]]” yelled Dawn. This plea seemingly went unnoticed by Winter, his focus locked upon Arcky. With a high-pitched screech, [[Winter moved to attack.]] Arcky moved to retaliate, releasing a bright beam of sunlight at Winter. [[Winter recoiled at the attack.]] The light shuddered to a stop, as Winter’s form began to grow limp and melt. Winter was defeated! However, [[Arcky seemed to have grown still in the air.]] A moment passed and Arcky plummeted to the ground, [[exhausted.]]Dawn rushed over to him. [[“Arcky!” she cried.]] He didn’t react. “Wake up!” [[He didn’t...]] [[Try Again?]] Traveling back the way they had came, Dawn found the waterfall that [[Spring was frozen within.]]Wielding the staff before her, she asked herself “[[OK, how do I work this thing?]]”.As if by...well, magic, the staff began emitting a mystical aura. Directing the staff at the waterfall, [[the wall of ice started to tremble.]] The surface of the ice split open, revealing a murcky darkness. [[Something shifted within the inky blackness…]] Spring emerged from the icy prison, his emerald wings spread wide. Spring took flight, [[sweeping across the land.]] Under his shadow, the barren winter wasteland began to fill with life. [[Spring was free.]] Landing near Dawn, he made himself comfortable. Dawn approached. “[[Hello, you're Spring then?]]” asked Dawn. “MAAYYBE?!” answered Spring, teasingly. “[[I’ll take that as a yes.]]” groaned Dawn. “GOOD PLAN, NICE STICK!” “[[It’s a staff.]]” corrected Dawn. “[[THAT’S JUST A FANCY STICK!]]” Spring threw back.“[[Anyway...we need your help to defeat Winter.]]” said Dawn.“HELP? WINTER? [[SAY NO MORE!]]” boomed Spring.“[[Really?]]” asked Dawn, surprised at that.Casually, Spring responded, “[[YES, I’M NOT GOING!]]”“[[You what?!]]” Dawn demanded.“NOT GOING! WINTER AS YOU CAN SEE, HAS BEATEN ME ONCE BEFORE!” [[Dawn was taken aback by that.]]How will Dawn respond? [[Guilt him]] or [[Threaten him?]]“[[Oh, I see…]]” Dawn muttered.“[[Listen, Spring!]]” Dawn shouted.“[[I suppose I’ll just take my ill baby dragon home.]]” said Dawn, pausing for dramatic effect.“I thought maybe you could save him, I was wrong. Perhaps if I leave now, [[I can get a grave dug in-]]"“[[STOP TALKING!]]” interrupted Spring suddenly.“[[What was that?]]” Dawn asked, feigned innocence in her voice.“I’LL HELP YOU STOP WINTER, JUST STOP GUILTING ME! [[IT’S VERY GRIM, LIKE WOW!]]” shrieked Spring, surprised at how awful Dawn was.“[[Shall we get moving then?]]” offered Dawn.“[[YES, YES! LET’S GO!]]” agreed Spring, not at all because of the emotional blackmail…Upon Spring’s back, [[Dawn took to the sky.]]Flying amongst the clouds, this was the highest [[her and Arcky had ever been.]]“I have been all over trying to help my dragon, [[Arcky here!]]”“If you don’t help me, I’ll- I’ll put you back in that waterfall!” Dawn threatened, punctuating the ultimatum with [[a sharp jab of her staff.]]Spring took pause at this. “THAT! WAS! [[ADORABLE!]]” he squealed.“I mean it!” Dawn cried out, desperation creeping into her voice. “[[I BET YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW HOW TO USE THAT FANCY STICK!]]” laughed Spring. “[[…I-I can still club you with it!]]” Dawn sulkily threw back.“NO, YOU COULD NOT! [[I WOULD ACTUALLY DEMOLISH YOU!]]” stated Spring, matter-of-factly.Dawn had no answer to that, it was true. Otherwise, [[Dawn would be charging at Winter, the staff as a weapon.]]“…HOWEVER, IF YOU CAN FIND IT IN YOU TO BELIEVE THAT, [[PERHAPS I CAN DO THE SAME?!]]” announced Spring enthusiastically.“Really?” asked Dawn with a revived eagerness. “[[REALLY, LET’S GET MOVING SHALL WE?]]” offered Spring. Upon Spring’s back, [[Dawn took to the sky.]]“AAAAAAAAAAAAGH!” screamed Dawn. [[Spring chuckled in response.]] Moving north, [[they found Winter.]]Dawn had seen a couple dragons by this point, but Winter didn’t quite fit [[the typical image of one.]]A roiling mass of blizzard with giant chunks of ice in a strange approximation of a pair of wing [[made the creature’s body.]]Perched atop this icy storm, sat a pair of icy jaws with a set of red eyes. Landing nearby this frozen nightmare, Dawn and Arcky watched as [[Spring landed before Winter.]] A strange aura began to trail from the pair’s eyes, preparing to battle. [[The two dragons readied themselves to strike.]] Spring struck first, colossal tree roots burst forth from the ground, [[constricting Winter’s tempest of a body.]]The mighty roots dragged down Winter’s struggling form, snapping it’s icy skeleton. Winter ended his struggle, [[melting into the ground.]] Spring turned to Dawn triumphantly. “[[I DID IT!]]” he boomed. “You did, I knew you could.” exclaimed Dawn. “[[Does this mean, Arcky should begin to recover?]]”Spring lets the question float between them before answering “MAYBE…” “”Maybe”?” questioned Dawn, [[her newly found good mood disappearing as quickly as it had came.]] “IF WE ARE TO AVOID ANOTHER INCIDENT LIKE THIS, [[ARCKY WILL HAVE TO BE TAUGHT HOW TO MANAGE HIS POWERS!]]” grumbled Spring.“[[HE HAS DUTIES TO THIS LAND AND ONLY I CAN TEACH HIM THEM!]]” said Spring, mornfully.Gutted that she wouldn’t be returning home with her little dragon friend, Dawn conceded to herself that [[this was the best thing for Arcky.]]She knelt, giving him a hug goodbye. [[She had done it…]][[Arcky was finally safe.]]Thank you for playing! [[Try Again?]]“Couple blades of hollow gra-wait!" Dawn realised just in time that Hollow Grass doesn’t agree with dragons. "[[What else could we use?]]" she wondered.“NO, MY DRAGON KNOWLEDGE IS RATHER BASIC. ALL I KNOW IS THAT THEY ARE [[BIG SCARY LIZARDS!]]” admitted the mask.“Well, now what? We could go back and find Autumn, see if he’s not an icicle.” suggested Dawn. [[“Arf!” barked Arcky, urgently.]]
