One day the kingdom of the peaceful mushroom people was invaded by the Koopa, a tribe of turtles famous for their black magic. The quiet, peace-loving Mushroom People were turned into mere stones, bricks and even field horse-hair plants, and the Mushroom Kingdom fell into ruin.
The only one who can undo the magic spell on the Mushroom People and return them to their normal selves is the Princess Toadstool, the daughter of the Mushroom King. Unfortunately, she is presently in the hands of the great Koopa turtle king.
Mario, the hero of the story (maybe) hears about the Mushroom People's plight and sets out on a quest to free the Mushroom Princess from the evil Koopa and restore the fallen kingdom of the Mushroom People.
You are Mario! It's up to you to save the Mushroom People from the black magic of the Koopa!
[[World 1-1]]You have arrived in the Mushroom Kingdom. In front of you, you can see a set of bricks floating in the air. The nearest one has a flashing question mark etched on one side. But before you can spend too much time pondering on the mystery of the glowing block, you notice a Goomba slowly waddling towards you! Watch out Mario, this Goomba's got bad intentions on its mind!
[[Jump on Goomba]]
[[Negotiate with Goomba]]You muster up your courage, bend slightly at the knees, and force yourself off the ground with a massive vertical leap! The satisfying squish of the Goomba under your feet informs you of your success.
[[Keep Going]]The Goomba touches you. You're not well-versed in the physiology of these creatures, so your sudden death comes as a surprise to you.
[[Retry?|World 1-1]]You begin running forward, fueled by adrenaline. You've never killed another creature before, and the sick feeling in your stomach will not go away. It's not just in your stomach, either; that glowing block is still gnawing at your mind. Just what exactly is it? Maybe you should go take a look at it?
[[Look at Block]]
[[Move on and forget it]]Hanging over your head is the mysterious ? block. Cautiously, you try reaching out to it, but it's just out of reach. You know what you have to do...
[[Jump]]Maybe some things are better left alone. You shake your head, as if to confirm to yourself that this block will not help you in your journey.
Unfortunately, you're too busy to notice the Goomba sneaking up on you...
[[Retry?|World 1-1]]That great vertical leap you're known for has come in handy again, Mario! Hitting your head on the block seems to have broken it, though; what was once a flashing ? display is now just a dull brown brick.
The top opens up, revealing a large mushroom. The rumbling in your stomach reminds you that you have not eaten since arriving in the Mushroom Kingdom.
[[Eat mushroom]]Upon swallowing the last remaining bits of the mushroom, you begin to feel uneasy.
To your horror, you notice your body growing to large, hideous proportions. You grasp your enlarged cranium with your cumbersome hands, screaming at the sky, hoping for an answer that will never come.
[[Reluctantly continue on]]In your horrifying new existence, there is no going back. Placing one nightmarishly large foot in front of the other, you continue your journey to rescue Princess Peach. Good God, you think to yourself, what on Earth made me think that this was a good idea?
Your thoughts are interrupted by the appearance of a new enemy. A large turtle, almost as big as you, wearing a bright green shell. It appears to be guarding a large pipe sticking out of the ground.
You can either attack the monster head on, or take your chances inside the large pipe.
[[Attack Koopa Troopa]]
[[Enter Pipe]]Watching the Koopa Troopa on its patrol begins to fill you with anger. Anger at your present situation, and your strange bodily mutation. "I'm just a damn plumber" you think, "why couldn't they find someone more qualified to do this!?"
Without even thinking, you jump high up into the air, and slam back down on the Koopa Troopa with all of your newfound mass. The sickening pop it's head makes between your boots and the ground isn't enough. You also kick its leftover shell as hard as you've ever kicked anything.
To your surprise, it bounces right off the pipe you jumped over to get here. And before you can even react, the shell nails you square in the chest, knocking you to the ground. Hard.
[[Get up]]Being a plumber, you have no issue squeezing yourself into this large pipe. Sliding down into the unknown, you can only hope things don't get any worse.
Luckily, they don't. Looking at the ground, you see several gold coins strewn about. Awkwardly stooping down on your massive knees, you begin picking up each and every coin you can find. In an effort to lighten the mood in your strange and unusual circumstances, you joke that once you rescue the Princess in the Mushroom Kingdom, you can go home and rescue yourself in the Capitalist Kingdom. It's not a very good joke. And that's why you're a plumber, Mario, not a comedian.
Filling your pockets, there is only one way to go: through another pipe sticking out from the wall in front of you.
[[Enter second pipe]]Again, you squeeze yourself through the next pipe. You hope that it leads to another money pit.
Unfortunately for your sense of greed, it doesn't. It just leads right back onto the surface. Looking around, you see that you've actually covered quite a distance going through that pipe, rather than travelling on foot. You breathe a sigh of relief seeing just how many monsters and obstacles you've managed to avoid this way.
Looking forward, you see a massive flag pole not too far from your current position. You can just barely make out the flag is disgracefully lying on the ground. Something in you is compelled to raise that flag. Maybe it's just a way of proving that you've made it this far. Who knows?
[[Move towards flagpole]]Getting back to your feet, you notice something's is different. Specifically, you. That turtle shell hitting you has returned you to your normal size! You begin to feel a little better about things. But still, you safely tiptoe around the turtle shell. After all, the next time it hits you, it may be fatal!
There are more blocks ahead. You hit all of them. You don't know why, you just do. Two of them spit out gold coins, which is good news for your bank account, and the third gives you another mushroom. You don't want to, but you swallow it anyway. You just have a feeling that growing several times your size will come in handy at some point.
You continue on, stomping on more Goombas and Koopa Troopas, making sure to avoid those dangerous shells. And on occasion, using those shells to kill off other creatures in your path.
After some time, another "?" block makes an appearance. Hitting this one provides a strange flower. You don't know what it does, but you hold onto it anyway. It could come in handy.
While investigating the flower, though, another Goomba sneaks up behind you. You quickly turn to react and...
[[What!?]]The only thing stopping you from getting to that flag is the massive staircase directly in front of you. With delight, you literally jump up entire series of steps to get to the top.
Upon actually reaching the top, you find it odd that there are no stairs leading down the other side. Just a straight drop to the bottom. But nevermind all that, the flagpole is right in front of you. Rather than dropping to the ground and raising the flag, you think it would be cooler to jump across, grab the rope, and raise the flag via momentum. Here goes nothing!
By God, you made it! You ride the rope all the way to the bottom, watching the flag of the Mushroom Kingdom rise to the top and fly with pride. The only thing missing, you think, is maybe a fireworks display. If only you had reached the flag four seconds earlier.
Exhausted, you take a seat next the flagpole. You see the entrance to the underground cave. You know that's where you have to go next. But you just want to take a minute, and reflect on just what the Hell has happened to you today. It's a strange, terrifying situation, for sure, and you know that it's only going to get worse from here. But the Princess needs to be rescued, and like you say about your plumbing jobs, "it's a dirty job, but somebody has to do it!" And that somebody is you, Mario.
The End
[[Replay?|Start]]A burst of flame shot out of the flower, incinerating the Goomba in what is an absolutely horrifying way to die. Living in this world must be a nightmarish existence. But you're not about to turn down a weapon like this.
Using the flower on everything you see, you slowly, but surely, make your way across the path. The smell of literal miles of burned flesh is making you sick. Taking a moment to empty your stomach over a small gap that apparently seems to lead to nowhere, you see something off in the distance. It looks like a flagpole. Maybe there's something of importance there?
You pick up the pace, and run to investigate.
[[Move towards flagpole]]
