You enter the car.
It’s 1:40 am, and all you want is to get home.
Choosing an Uber pool was the reasonable option. You weren’t expecting a limo to roll up, but you’re playing it cool. The car smells of air fresheners and alcohol–your pool was far from the first to ride in this vehicle.
Two other people are seated. Directly in front of you sits a young man, wearing a gaudy crop top. In the far corner of the vehicle, a woman holds a large backpack in her lap. Her face is obscured. The driver has not turned around to greet you, and there is a glass cover between them and the other passengers.
You could strike up a conversation(if:$phone < 2)[, or you could distract yourself with your phone.](else:)[.]

“Don’t you have any other bags?”
She shakes her head. “I packed everything I need in this bag. Honestly, I likely overpacked, and now I’m worried that it won’t hold together.”
You give the bag a careful once-over. “As long as it doesn’t get too jostled, it should be okay.”

}The limo shakes again, much more violently. You’re propelled forward, and for a moment you fear that the seatbelt around your waist is going to give away. It doesn’t, but the tourist’s ends up in a much worse position. Her bag must have been too big for a seatbelt to cover, which explains why she’s now curled up on the floor. Ouch.
The clubber also had a seatbelt on during the sudden shock, but he unbuckles it in favor of trying to get the driver’s attention, hitting the privacy barrier separating them aggressively.
“What the hell, man! Stop the car!”
The driver doesn’t respond.
You scan the room, unsure what to do. All you know is, whatever you decide, it’s got to be fast.

Your brain catches up and reminds you that doors exist, so you stand up and make a dash towards the door next to you, pulling it open. It’s then that you realize that the vehicle is moving backwards, while being bombarded with the cold, wet air outside.
When you look the other way, you are greeted with a fast-approaching wall. You have just enough reaction time to leap from the car, seconds before the devastating impact. Still, your trajectory has been set, and a flying shard of shrapnel is the last thing you see before everything goes black.]
(else-if:$ceilingStare is 1)[Your time spent staring at the roof has paid off. There’s an escape hatch up there, a way to get out of this terrifying limo. You unbuckle your seatbelt and clamber up onto the seat, reaching up and successfully opening the hatch.
You clamber out, and get a terrifying view of what’s happening. You hadn’t been able to tell from inside the limo, but crouching on top of the slippery car reveals the fact that it’s been moving backwards the entire time.
You turn around, and come face to face with a building, that’s getting bigger at a jarring speed. There’s no way this is an accident, the driver’s actions are deliberate and intentional. The limo’s going to crash. You let out a scream, instincts telling you to move–do something before it’s too late.
In your haste, you forget about the weather around you. One false movement sends you sliding down the limo, and you suddenly find yourself in a desperate fight to remain where you are.
In the end, your actions have little meaning, because the building catches up to the car. ]

You watch as the limo drives off into the night. Standing there, in the cold rain, your filled with relief. Relief, dread, guilt–there are still people in that car, people you were unable to save.
Maybe you should’ve tried harder.
Maybe it was an impossible feat, from the second you stepped into that limo.
At least you’re here, at least you prevented your own demise. That’s what matters, right?
One might even dare say you’ve won.You pull out the phone charger, plugging it into a nearby outlet. Thank goodness these fancy limos come with a dozen power sources. You plug your phone in, and wait for it to boot up.

]Your phone flashes to life, and you stare at it eagerly. Once the comforting presence of the home screen returns, you grab the phone and immediately check the Uber app.
The Uber driver is no longer accepting new rides into your pool. That’s not the truly strange part. The map shows that the car is moving backwards, and is beginning to pick up speed.
You bolt up, holding your phone out to the two other passengers. “Look, we’ve gotta get out of here!”
The clubber stands up and grabs the phone from your hand, examining it. “What the hell?” He turns towards the driver’s seat and begins to bang on the barrier, trying to get their attention.
The tourist doesn’t stand up, choosing to instead give your phone charger a long, unsure stare. You gesture for her to join you, but she shakes her head, holding her backpack tight.
There’s no way these people are going to come with you.
You turn towards the nearby door, opening it and letting in the cool air and rain. The driver senses this development, and the limo starts to go faster. You only have a second to make a choice–and you do. Leaping from the car, you hit solid ground and everything goes black.
