You grab the ID from the hand and place it in your pants' pocket. "Hey," the voice squeaks, "don't forget to make it to the employee meeting in a few minutes. It's in the office." You thank the silhouette as you walk away from the booth. However, the park's interior actually looks relatively nice, with concrete walkways and signs pointing to all of the major attractions. In fact, the inside of the park is much cleaner than the outside. According to the signs, the Wave Pool, Gift Shop, and Concession Stand are to the left, while the Go Kart track, Roller Coaster, and the Employee Entrance to the ticket stand are to the right. Behind you is the park entrance. Every time you've even seen the man on tv or online, he was always in character. Unless Mr. Rogers actually dresses and acts like a culturally-insensitive tourist, you're pretty sure it's his character. You still don't know why the park doesn't just have an animal mascot. Rich thinks to himself for a few seconds. "Shit. I forgot to put the chlorine in the water yesterday." He looks out to the left and then back to you. He pulls some keys out of his pocket and hands them to you. "I need you to go into the pool shed and grab twenty gallons of liquid chlorine. It should be in the back." You stare at him for a couple seconds before asking him how exactly you're going to carry that much chlorine. "Grab two per trip and take ten trips. It's great exercise." He looks at you and smirks. "I'll be here if you need me." You look over to your left and see the [[Pool Shed]]. ] |leaving)[It takes you ten minutes to bring out all of the jugs. It didn't help that Rich just sat on the ground and watched you carry them to him. When you finally set the last two gallons in front of him, Rich says, "Well, it's about time!" However, you do see him meeting up with some of the other employees for a split second before he is gone from view. You look up and see steam shoot out of one of the copper pipes on the ceiling. To your left are three or four [[rows of shelves->Shelves]], all holding different tools and chemicals. He's in the costume.]] The other |emp>[employees] around you continue talking with each other as you look to find an empty seat. The only seat open is in the front row, so you walk past the ongoing conversations and sit down directly in the center of the first row. |young)[$thts[None of the employees look old enough to drink. In fact, I'm pretty sure some of them haven't even hit puberty yet.]] As soon as you sit down, Mr. Rogers shouts, "Alrighty, crew! Welcome to another exciting day at Mr. Rogers' Peak Action Amusement Center!" The microphone produces a loud feedback as the entire room winces. "I've got an important announcement to make!" He takes a piece of paper out from under his sunhat and unfolds it, all the while looking directly at you. "We have a brand new member of our crew here today!" The entire group looks in your direction as Mr. Rogers motions for you to stand up. "Come on. Don't be shy," the tourist says, "Tell us a little about yourself. You nervously stand up out of your chair and face the group. You tell them that your name is Margo and that you have lived in Ohio your whole life. When you tell them that you're nineteen, a couple people looked surprised. "Thank you, Margo. Eventually, the silence is broken by a young man raising his hand. "Will we get paid extra?" the boy asks. Suddenly, Mr. Rogers starts to laugh hysterically. His face turns to a crimson red as his belly jumps up and down, following the rhythm of his laughter. After thirty seconds of nonstop laughing, Mr. Rogers calms down and responds, "No. But thank you for volunteering, Rich." Rich tries to interject, but Mr. Rogers is already onto the [[next topic->MeetingEnd]].The meeting goes on for another fifteen minutes, with the topics ranging from the changes in food prices to shift hours. Finally, Mr. Rogers thanks everyone for coming and says, "Remember to pick up your special bonuses before leaving tonight. I'll be in my office most of the day, so make sure to come by and grab them." As you get up out of your seat, Mr. Rogers motions to both you and Rich to come to him. When you reach him, Mr. Rogers says, "So, for the next few days, Rich here will be showing you how to run different areas of the park." His voice loses its cheerful demeanor as he leans in and says, "Do as you're told, and you'll do great here. You may even get a special bonus of your own." He leans away and smiles at you. Then, he nods to Rich and says, "She's your responsibility. Make sure she follows my rules, okay? If she messes up, she won't be the only one getting in trouble." Rich nods at him. Mr. Rogers begins to walk off and stops. "Oh, I almost forgot." Mr. Rogers exclaims. "Make sure to come by my office after your shift today, Margo. I'd like to see how your first day was." You nod your head as he walks off. As soon as Mr. Rogers is out of view, Rich looks straight at you, his mouth in a deep frown. "Ok," he says, "First things first. He pulls out a lanyard and shuts the cabinet. "Here." Mr. Rogers gets up out of his chair and moves around the desk until he stands right next to you. "Tomorrow, Rich will be waiting for you in front of the offices. Make sure to get there early. He's going to be teaching you a couple of different shifts tomorrow." Once again, you nod. "Alrighty then." Mr. Rogers shakes your hand. "I'll see you tomorrow." You say goodbye to Mr. Rogers as you walk out of the office. You tell him about how Rich wanted you to pour all of the chlorine into the water and how you only poured in half. You also tell him your concerns about the size of the waves. Mr. Rogers' smile wavers as he listens to your story. Mr. Rogers sighs heavily. "Look. Things aren't the best here right now. I've gotten into some money troubles, and it has taken its toll on the park." Mr. Rogers smile is now completely gone as he stares out the window. "I've been running this place for twenty years, and I don't want to see it fail now." He turns back to look at you. His sunken eyes have returned. "I try as hard as I can to keep a smile on my face at all times. I try to be strong." He begins to get red in the face. "So what? The park isn't in the same condition it was a few years ago, and some guests get hurt along the way. It's the best I can do under the circumstances." He slams his hand into the desk. "As long as this place stays afloat, I don't care. I can't lose the park." He walks around the desk and stands in front of you. "So, please. Keep quiet about all of this, ok? I'm happy; the employees are happy; most of the guests are happy. I know that some of our practices may seem a little questionable, but that's just how things are around here." He calms down as a warm smile crosses his face. He places his hand on your shoulder. "Please. Don't tell anyone." You look into his eyes, and they look the sincerest that they've ever been. |dot>[...] |fine)[$desc[You tell him that you'll keep quiet. He pulls out what appears to be a lanyard and a thick envelope. "Here." He reaches the |LY>[lanyard] out for you to take. |lan)[$desc[The lanyard consists of a thick piece of yarn tied to a platic card holder.]] You reach out and grab the lanyard from his hand as he says "Welcome to the team." You thank him for the lanyard as you place your employee ID into the holder and tie the lanyard around your neck. "And here." He hands you the envelope and you carefully take it from him. You look inside and find one hundred dollars in five dollar bills. You look at him, confused. "It's your special bonus for sticking with me." Mr. Rogers' smile has never been so big. Not even in any commercial you've seen. "With the lanyard, make sure to keep that on you at all times. It means you're part of the crew." You nod, thanking him. "For tomorrow's shift, Rich will be waiting for you in front of the offices. Make sure to get there early. He's going to be teaching you a couple of different jobs tomorrow." Once again, you nod. "Alrighty then." Mr. Rogers reaches over the desk and shakes your hand. "I'll see you tomorrow, Margo." You smile back at him as you tell him goodbye. You walk outside of the building and head over to the bus stop, the entire time holding the envelope tight. You wait for the bus for twenty minutes until one finally arrives. As soon as you left the office, she dragged me in to talk to Mr. Rogers and screamed at the both of us for over two hours." He quickly looks to see if anyone is around, and then he continues. "Apparently, you're not supposed to pour in chemicals when people are swimming, let alone twice as much as normal. Long story short, she threated to sue us and report us to Health Services. However, thankfully, Mr. Rogers had a compromise in mind. Now, as long as we pay her a certain amount of money each month until we pay off the medical bills, she won't, and I quote, 'F*** us to hell and back.' Luckily, this means she's off our back for now. However, Mr. Rogers had me shut down and drain the entire pool last night to make sure no one else got hurt. This morning, I had to block off the pool area in order to make sure no jackasses went into the pool during park hours, which is what I was doing up until now." As soon as he finishes, you let him know that you're sorry that he went through that. "Yeah. This is the first time since the park's opening that the wave pool's been shut down, and Mr. Rogers is pretty bumbed about it. Besides, I was really hoping this week to try to beat my record of the biggest waves in the pool, but I guess I'll have to settle with my current record." He shows you a weak smile, and you politely smile back. You ask him what shift he's going to be teaching you today. "Oh. right. Well, since you seemed interested in the size of the waves yesterday, I figured that I'd show you another one of my other projects." "This is the Go-Kart Track: the best section of the park by far." You look over at the track and wonder how this place hasn't closed sooner. The "track" consists of what appears to be an old employee parking lot with traffic cones forming the track's path. As soon as you look back towards Rich, a kid |Z>[zooms] past the two of you, screaming profanities the entire time. |ZOOM)[$thts[When I say "zoom," I mean "going faster than light."]] Rich notices your surprised look and says, "You like that? This track has fifteen turns on one mile of path, and these babies can push past fifty-five miles per hour." He bends down to whisper in your ear. "They're supposed to stay at twenty-five, but I found another shortcut." He leans back up and winks. "Anyway, those makes for one //insane// ride." "Kids love it!" You look past him to see the same kid crying as his tears pass maximum velocity. "Ok," Rich states, "there are a couple jobs you have to do while on this shift. One: prepare the karts before each race; two: referee each race; three: make sure nobody dies; and four: keep your area clean." "For today, I'm going to be the ref and the safety officer. You're going to be on garbage duty and prep. Okay?" You nod your head in agreement and ask him what he wants you to do first. "I don't really care. None of it's //that// important, anyway. I was going to try to rework it using the screwdriver, but I couldn't find it." He looks at you suspiciously and gets close to your face. "You wouldn't know anything about this, would you?" It is more like a cheap pavillion consisting of six rotting wood poles connected to a rusting tin roof.]] "Alright," Rich says, excitedly. "These are our Go-Karts." You take a look at one of the |K>[karts]. |Wow)[$thts[Wow. They kinda suck.]] At first, these karts look like the typical one you would find at any local park. However, with a closer look, you can tell that these karts haven't been "up to code" for almost ten years. Not only are they mostly held together by duct tape and super glue but also you can see that gasoline is leaking from the majority of the karts' fuel tanks. You ask Rich about the leaking fuel tanks. "Yeah. They do that. Don't worry about it, though. Nobody's allowed to smoke in the park, so it's not like anybody will explode or anything." You hesitantly nod your head in understanding. Rich then begins to explain the mechanics of the karts: how to make sure they start; how to tape up a leaking fuel line; etc. "Now, this is the coolest part of the entire kart." He points at a little part with a cog attached to it. You can see a tennis ball lodged into the cog. "This is the governor. It's supposed to prevent the karts from going over twenty-five miles an hour. However," he says, his face beaming with pride, "I figured out that sticking a tennis ball into the cog system completely nullifies the governor, allowing these babies to be pushed to their limits!" You ask if he thinks that this is a little dangerous. "Seriously? Come on, Margo. Live a little!" He puts his hand on your shoulder. "This place is all about breaking rules. Every rule that is broken just makes this place even cooler!" He takes his hand off of you and steps back towards the kart. "The sooner you learn that, the better." He motions for you to come towards him. "Now, hand me that wrench over there and I'll show you some more [[tips and tricks->Decision]] on how to make them //really// fun." { (click: ?SS) [ (show: ?SmSh) ] (click: ?K) [ (show: ?Wow) ]}You decide to take garbage duty first. Besides cleaning up the occassional beer cans and candy wrappers, the job is pretty uneventful. An hour in, you notice several trails of gasoline on the racing track. You walk over to Rich and tell him about it. "Yeah, the karts leak a little. I tried using duct tape to patch the holes, but there's only so much I can do. It's not that big of a deal, though. Nobody's allowed to smoke in here, so it's not like anybody will explode or anything." After around an hour, Rich stops what he's doing and teaches you about the mechanic job. The rest of the day goes pretty smoothly until around a half hour after dark. Right when it becomes dark, you notice that the karts don't have lights on them. You try to tell Rich about it, but he shrugs it off. As soon as he stops talking to you, you hear a loud crash. You both look out to the course and see two kids lying on the asphalt, crying. You run over to help as you tell Rich to go call an |Ambu>[ambulance]. |A)[$desc[In ten minutes, the ambulance arrives and takes one of the kids off to the local hospital. The other boy was well enough to be able to be treated on the spot. You really start to feel like part of the team, even meeting the quiet silhouette who works at the ticket booth. You start to feel like you belong. However, it didn't last long. Due to numerous broken safety regulations, countless accidents and one death in the wave pool soon followed. Due to this, Rich left shortly after, mad that his "hard work" of making the park fun was for nothing. Many other employees also left, but the park ended up gaining a substancial boost in profit. Thanks to your efforts and decisions, Mr. Rogers' Peak Action Amusement Center became one of the safest and most profitable parks in the country. You actually decided to stay with the park indefinitely, with your career being extremely successful as a result. Eventually, Mr. Rogers was able to retire, and he left you in charge of the park.
