4 Days To Extraction
[[Start|Day 1 Start]]
[[Notes]]You flick through the Defender. Russ Say U.S. Plots 'A-War'. 1 Slain, 3 Shot As Lovers Spat. Something about bees. There's a few photos. He is sat alone with his breakfast.
[[Keep looking]]Coffee was always bitter this early in the morning. He is sat alone with his breakfast.
[[Glance over]]That's all the time I have left to find out what he knows.
[[Look at him over the newspaper]]
[[Take a sip of coffee]]The piece of paper. What does it say?
[[Pick it up]]Try not to look so obvious.
[[Damn (Ending 1)]]You wait it out until you're picked up. You're time in America had not been completely unsuccessful, but you'd failed to find out what he knew.
[[TRY AGAIN|Home]]There's the photos too. "Starting 'Em Young". A small boy "a warrior of Red China" with a machine gun. Huh. A local fire, car crash fatalities, inquest into a stabbing, cafe bust-up. Something on Janos Kadar. Isreal denying espionage charge. Korea. Seuz. You flick to the comics on page 8.
Looks like he's writing something on his paper. That's new.
Daisy comes over and asks if you want more coffee.
[[Yes, thanks]]
[[I'm okay]]
//4 Days To Extraction// is set over five days, April 1st to April 5th 1957 and takes place in Chicago.
I've always found the use of newspapers and cyphers one of the most fascinating parts of Cold War espionage. As such, the //Chicago Daily Defender// features quite heavily. So do cyphers.
Pen and paper (or digital equivalent) might come in handy. This is probably not an easy game.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aries.pngYes, thanks. She tops up the mug and you dutifully take a sip.
[[He's gone]]Oh no, thanks. Daisy goes to another table. You stare into your still full mug. You sometimes wish he'd go to breakfast somewhere with better coffee...
[[He's gone]]
You wake up and head to the diner.
[[Time to go]]You settle down at your favorite table. It faces the door. He hasn't arrived. Daisy comes over and asks what you want.
[[The usual]]
[[Something else]]He leaves the cafe and you follow.
[[Stay back]]He crosses the road.
[[Cross the road]]And turns a corner.
[[Taking to a cop]]Damn. You see him talking to a cop. He points in your direction. You keep walking.
[[Damn (ending 2)]]You wait it out until you're picked up. You're time in America had not been completely unsuccessful, but you'd failed to find out what he knew.
[[TRY AGAIN|Home]]A big pile of eggs and bacon.
[[He leaves]]Perhaps you'll just have some toast today.
[[He leaves]]Looks like he's writing something on his paper. That's new.
Daisy comes over and asks if you want more coffee.
[[Yes, thanks]]
[[I'm okay]][[0 Days to Extraction|Day 5]]And so is the newspaper...
[[Let's see what happens tomorrow|Day 2 Title]]Through the window you see him turn left. He throws the paper in a bin.
[[Wait]]
[[Inspect]]You wait to see if anyone approaches, but they don't.
[[Inspect]]You head over to the bin and pick out the newspaper. You tuck it under your arm and head back to your appartment.
[[Examine]]You flick through the paper. After the TV and Radio listings on page 7 there's the daily fortune finder on page 9.
//To learn your "Fortune" for today from the stars, write in the letters of the alphabet corresponding to the numerals on the line of the astrological period in which you were born. You will find it fun.//
Fun indeed, he's circled a few of the numbers.
[[Decypher]]On each row of numbers he's circuled a few. Looks like it'll be a simple one to crack.
[[Listen to something]]Time to get to work.
12 1 2 3 15 14 6 9 18 13 19 20 5 19 20 19 21 3 3 5 19 19
(event: when time > 5s)[==I might need a minute or so to figure this one out.
(event: when time > 50s)[==Given who Dr. Jones is this might be some vital intellegnce. These last few days could prove useful yet.
(event: when time > 60s)[== [[I think I've solved it|Day 3 Title]]
[[3 Days To Extraction|Day 2]] [[2 Days To Extraction|Day 3]]You know the plan like the back of your hand. A few hours after breakfast, there'll be a brown '51 Lincoln Cosmopolitan Sports Sedan on the corner of East Monroe and South Michigan. But that's Friday.
What will happen today?
[[Head to the diner|Head to the cafe]]You get to the diner and order the usual and wait for him to arrive.
[[Read through the paper]]You place the newspaper on your table and pick a 78 to play.
[[Something local]]
[[To put a smile on your face]]
[[To remind you of home]]That'll do.The Todds Rhodes Orchestra. You'd never get anything like this back home.
10 years in America and things like this still raise a smile.
[[Decypher|Decypher 2]]That'll do. Ha. Mr Bear and his Bearcats aren't the only ones with RADAR.
10 years in America and things like this still raise a smile.
[[Decypher|Decypher 2]]Tchaicovsky's 6th. That'll do nicely. 10 years in America and things like this still raise a smile.
[[Decypher|Decypher 2]]You arrive a little earlier than usual.
[[Sit down]]
[[1 Day To Extraction|Day 4]]It was a bold move lending him your tie. It might just pay off.
[[Head to the cafe|Head to the cafe 2]]Let's write down these numbers before I forget them...
(event: when time > 5s)[== Well they don't make much sense. I could be here a while.
(event: when time > 300s)[== [[I think I've got it|Day 5 Title]]
(event: when time > 400s)[== Perhaps the numbers are in pairs.
(event: when time > 450s)[== Time for a beer.
(event: when time > 600s)[== What was the name of that ancient Greek historian?
(event: when time > 1000s)[== I need some more beer...Air-force crash. Murders. Supreme Court goings on. William Worthy jr. speaking in Chicago inspite of an unauthorised trip to Red China. Gun Duel death. Thomas S. Gates jr. the new Navy Secretary. Labor and unions. Communist inspired protestors in Paris. That deserved a picture. Iran. Worthy jr's passport application turned down due to China trip.
Talk about freedom of the press...
[[He arrives]]He's wearing his grey suit today. Black shoes are shining.
[[Observe|Obsevre]]
[[Go over]]You read through the paper and wait to see what happens.
[[Wait|Wait 2]]Double-click this passage to edit it.He seems a bit flustered this morning.
[[Go over]]
[[Wait|Wait 3]]You're mostly through your bacon and eggs now.
[[Call Daisy over]]
[[Go over]]Hi Daisy. How's it going this morning?
Yeh, I did read that. World's going to pot right?
Haha, yeh, that be great thanks.
She fills up your coffee.
[[Add sugar]]
[[Drink as is]]Much better when it isn't bitter.
[[Obsevre|Observe 2]]Just as bitter as ever.
[[Obsevre|Observe 2]]He seems to have finished writting his message. He folds the paper up but he's in a hurry and bumps into Daisy.
Coffee all over him.
(event: when time < 8s) [==[[Go over|Go over 2]]
[[Wait| Wait 4]]You watch the scene unfold. Daisy's clearly very apologetic. He goes to the restroom to clean up.
[[Follow him|Follow him 2]]
(event: when time > 3s)[== [[Go for the paper]]You enter the restroom and find him washing off the coffee as best he can.
[[Lend him your spare tie|Lend him your spare tie 2]] You go over. But it's too late. Daisy has cleaned up the coffee-covered paper.
[[Damn|Damn 4]] Gosh darn. You say. Is there anything I can do?
[[Lend him your spare tie]]Yes, yes, it's fine. Don't worry about. I'm here for breakfast most days.
[[Tomorrow]]Yes, tomorrow's good.
[[He goes to the restroom]]Now's your moment.
[[Swap the newspapers]]
[[Read his message]]You quickly swap your newspapers.
He returns from the restroom, waves goodbye, heads out to the left and chucks the paper in the bin.
You got lucky there.
[[Return home|Day 3 evening]]You pick up the paper put the pages are wet with coffee.
[[Put it back]]
[[Try and be quick]]You put it back before he sees.
[[Damn|Damn 4]]You turn the pages with a careful speed but accidental tear a page.
[[Are you alright?]]Oh yes, sorry, hope you don't mind.
He's back from the bathroom.
[[Damn|Damn ending 3]]He looks over at your table.
We'll I'd best be going. Thanks for the tie.
He leaves quickly with the newspaper.
Damn.
[[There's always tomorrow|Day 4 title (fail)]]You arrive at the cafe and Daisy greets you.
[[What?]]Here's your tie. He also said you can have this since you were so interested in it yesterday.
[[She hands you a paper]]You open it up to the fortune finder.
[[Decypher|Dechypher 3]]2315313134421514
[[Well that's different]]Definitely not a Caeser cypher. You draw a grid and plot it out.
[[Damn (Ending 3)]] //HELLO RED//
You wait it out until you're picked up. Your time in America had not been completely unsuccessful, and you'd managed to find out some useful things from Dr. Jones. But you can't help but think you could've gotten more.
[[TRY AGAIN|Home]]You settle down for the evening with Dr. Jones' paper.
19 12 8 18 1 22 23 25 12 26 26 21 12 5 1 20 22 21
(event: when time > 5s)[== You think this might be something a little more than a simple number letter switcharoo.
(event: when time > 10s)[== It'll probably take longer than the last one. You grab a beer from the fridge.
(event: when time > 260s)[== slhr av wylzz ulea tvu. That makes no sense. Perhaps there's another step.
(event: when time > 180s)[== [[I think I've solved it|Day 4 Title]] Well today was a bust. Hopefully tomorrow will bring more success.
[[Tomorrow|Day 4 Title]]Yes, yes, it's fine. Don't worry about. I'm here for breakfast most days.
[[Tomorrow|Tomorrow 2]]Yes, tomorrow's good.
[[Leave]]You leave the restroom.
[[Go for the paper]][[1 Day To Extraction|Arrive (fail)]]At the same time, things might be trickier today. You can't just go asking the man for his newspaper.
[[Or can you?]]You arrive a little later than normal. And he's already there. Good
[[Bustle in]]
[[Bustle in a little too obviously]]You act a bit flustered.
[[Coffee]]You take your coffee with a big shake of sugar.
[[You hope he's watching]]He comes over.
[[Hello]]
[[Ignore|Hello]]16 9 23 24 7 25 7 13 24 7 19 25 17 20 6 5 15 2 10 10 9
What could it mean? You sense it'll take some time.
(event: when time > 300s)[== Around the fortune finder table are the star signs.
One of them is circled.
<img src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5e/Aries.svg">
Could that be the key?

Work onYou close your suitcase and head out for the last time.
Where do you go?
[[The corner of East Monroe and South Michigan Av.]]
[[South Michigan Av. opposite the Institute|No that's not right]]
[[The corner of South Monroe Drive and East Monroe|No that's not right]]
You probably don't want to do that.
[[Bustle in]] Good morning. I'd just like to say thanks again for letting me borrow your tie. That really saved my skin.
[[Take the tie back]]Not at all. Actually, I suppose you couldn't help me with something could you?
[[I'm running a bit late.]]
[[I forgot to grab today's Defender]]
You see, my alarm didn't go off this morning and I didn't have time to check the TV listings. I know it's silly but...
[[He cuts in]]He looks at you a little longer. Sorry. He says. I didn't pick one up today but I think Daisy might have one behind the counter. He smiles.
[[Thanks]]Well, perhaps the direct approach wasn't the best idea.
[[Finish breakfast|Day 5 title (fail)]][[0 Days To Extraction|Arrive 2 (fail)]]You arrive at the cafe and Daisy greets you.
[[What?|What? 2]]Dr. Jones asked if I could give this to you.
[[She hands you a paper| She hands you a paper 2]][[Decypher|Dechypher 3]]No worries buddy, least I can do.
[[He hands you the paper]]You take the paper and skim over the fortune finder as you turn to the TV listings.
(event: when time < 32s)[== 1334453344154224334415312234
You need to remember these. You don't have long. Probably only 30 seconds.
[[Return the paper]]Thanks.
[[Finish your breakfast and return home|Day 4 evening]]You think you'll treat yourself. After all, it's your last day.
[[Choc-chip pancake stack]]
[[Bacon and maple syrup pancake stack]]I'll miss America, I think.
[[Thanks, Daisy]]I'll miss America, I think.
[[Thanks, Daisy]]Not at all Mr. Porter. Good to see you feeding yourself up. She laughs.
You notic that he's still not hear.
[[Have you seen Dr. Jones today Daisy?]]Ah yes. Looks like its a simple A1Z26, where each number equals the corresponding number of the alphabet.
Encoded: 12 1 2 3 15 14 6 9 18 13 19 20 5 19 20 19 21 3 3 5 19 19

[[The corner of East Monroe and South Michigan Av.]]
You get in and greet your handler.
[[There's some things you need to know]]It's a fine car, and probably the last time you'll see one.
[[Go to the brown Lincoln Cosmopolitan]]Did you get something from him?
