,,,,,,,,,,,It’s the distant year of 2015.
Humanity is at war. A cosmic group of god-like beings called the Angels are descending onto the earth, one-by-one. Their true intentions are unknown, but they seem to want one thing: to eradicate all life on earth.
Conventional weapons have no effect on them.

(text-style:"underline")[(text-style:"bold")[(print: (passage:)'s name)]]
Misato is the 29 year-old operations director at NERV HQ in Tokyo-3 and looks over both Shinji and Asuka, who live with her. Privately floaty and closed-off, Misato is stern and driven while working, concerned both for the sake of humanity and the safety of her pilots.
Vital to Misato's self-image is her own femininity. She's an alluring woman, and she knows that. While she carries this part of herself with pride, it's more of a shield than a dagger-- a way to maintain separation between herself and others. Though that doesn't mean she dislikes the attention it brings her.
Years ago, Misato dated and lived with Ryoji Kaji. Now that he’s in Tokyo-3, Misato has found herself stuck between wanting to distance herself from him and allowing herself to enjoy his attention.
Misato is one of the few people in Shinji’s life who seems to empathize with him or even tries to. Though she doesn’t like admitting it, she has more in common with Shinji than she lets on.
<img style:

(text-style:"underline")[(text-style:"bold")[(print: (passage:)'s name)]]
At fourteen years old, there are many unknowns about Rei Ayanami. She has no records and no real life outside of NERV. She’s soft-spoken, withdrawn, and stoic, never seeming to care about much of anything besides piloting Unit 00 and her relationship to Gendo Ikari, who seems like more of a father to her than Shinji.
Still, it’s not uncommon to see Rei wrapped with bandages. The tests and trials she conducts at NERV, assigned to her by Commander Ikari, oftentimes leave her wounded and overworked.
Despite all that, she’s pretty enough to catch the gaze of the boys at school-- Shinji in particular-- and has earned the jealousy of many of the girls. She doesn’t seem to notice either.
<img style:
<img src= 'https://www.dropbox.com/s/rdczutd11winlp0/asuka%20alt.png?dl=1' alt= 'Asuka in pilot suit' style='float:right;width:25%;height:25%;'>
(text-style:"underline")[(text-style:"bold")[(print: (passage:)'s name)]]
A fourteen year-old, German-born pilot, Asuka is something of a genius. She’s fluent in both German and Japanese, has a college degree, and has been training to become a pilot ever since she was a young child. But what Asuka is most proud of is her ability with an Evangelion. She boasts about it whenever she can.
All of Asuka’s achievements have made her arrogant, yet still insecure. Her ability to succeed is her only driving force, and whenever that feeling of success is threatened, she becomes defensive. Most of all, she wants to feel mature and independent. She tends to push this desire onto Ryoji Kaji, her old handler, who she has a crush on and makes no effort to hide it.
The brunt of Asuka’s abuse lands on Shinji. She calls him an idiot a lot, is quick to mock him, and doesn’t understand his hesitation to pilot. But sometimes, Asuka’s abuse towards Shinji seems to be hiding a deeper truth. One she refuses to confront.
<img style:
<img src= 'https://www.dropbox.com/s/pv30g0p581znuyx/gendo.png?dl=1' alt= 'Commander Ikari' style='float:right;width:20%;height:20%;'>
(text-style:"underline")[(text-style:"bold")[(print: (passage:)'s name)]]
Gendo’s life is dictated by his work. He has dedicated all of his time towards researching and constructing the Evangelions, building NERV, and carrying out his own, secret projects.
Least of his concerns is his son, Shinji. Gendo sees Shinji as a pilot and no more-- an asset to be used in his plans. He only ever shows a fondness for Shinji whenever he does well as a pilot or listens directly to his commands. Even when discussing the death of his wife, Shinji’s mother, Gendo shows no compassion for his son.
Gendo has a closer relationship with Rei Ayanami than Shinji. Something about her brings out a glimmer of his kind side. But only a glimmer. After all, Rei is still just a pilot, albeit a vital one.
<img style:
<img src= 'https://www.dropbox.com/s/i6svp5bvw5xj3yg/output-onlinepngtools.png?dl=1' alt= 'Ryoji Kaji' style='float:right;width:20%;height:20%;'>
(text-style:"underline")[(text-style:"bold")[(print: (passage:)'s name)]]
A disheveled smooth-talker, Kaji’s motives are questionable. He works for NERV but also investigates their secret projects, reports to outside organizations, and, at times, just gets too curious for his own good.
What isn’t questionable is his interest in women. It’s common to see Kaji around NERV HQ, chatting up any and all female workers he finds. Not least of all Misato Katsuragi. She’s his old flame. The two dated and lived together years ago, and Kaji still has an interest in her, more than just a desire to get her in bed.
Though they don’t meet much, Kaji is nice to Shinji and tries to ease his mind whenever they talk. He tries to show a similar degree of kindness towards Asuka, who he used to watch over as a handler, but he knows that it's better to keep her at arm's length. After all, she is still a kid.

An Evangelion is a giant humanoid being of near-godlike power, created by NERV to fight off the Angels. Oftentimes, they are simply referred to as Evas. Believed by most to be robots, those that work closely to the Evangelions know that they are at least partially organic, though their true origins are hidden by NERV.
Pilots control the Eva units from an entry plug, which is inserted into the Eva through an opening on its nape.
Though vastly powerful, Evangelions run on power supplied by an umbilical cable. If this cable is severed or disconnected, the unit has up to five minutes of power before it shuts down.
In addition to creating their own AT fields, Evas are outfitted with any combination of weapons, each specifically designed to weaken or break an Angel’s AT field. Such weapons include: automatic rifles, progressive knives, and positron sniper rifles.

The Angels are a mysterious group of god-like beings who possess unknown powers. Their arrival is believed to be related to the Second Impact, and all Angels seem to be drawn to Tokyo-3. While their goals are unknown, they are generally understood to be enemies of humanity.
Angels create AT fields-- barriers of protective energy. These fields are too strong for conventional weapons to pierce, which is why NERV has constructed the Evas. Only they are capable of penetrating an AT field.
Angels can only be eliminated by destroying their core-- a red, spherical, crystal-like organ located somewhere within the Angel. Once it is destroyed, the Angel dies.
Despite these constants, no two Angels are the same. While one may be humanoid, another is shaped like a tetrahedron, and a third is the size of a virus. Their powers vary in the same manner. There is no known reason for such differences. This makes each fight with an Angel unpredictable and highly dangerous.

NERV is a special organization, founded in the years after the Second Impact, whose purpose is to combat the Angels and who is responsible for the creation of the Evangelions.
The organization is run by Gendo Ikari, and its headquarters is in the GeoFront beneath Tokyo-3.
Funded and controlled by the United Nations, NERV operates independently. This allows NERV to conduct whatever research it wants without answering to higher powers. However, this level of independence, coupled with the mysterious nature of its research, makes NERV a target of outside suspicion.

Following the obliteration of Old Tokyo in the wake of the Second Impact, Tokyo-3 was built as an eventual replacement for Japan's capital city.
Tokyo-3 is a fortress city designed to withstand Angel attacks. Its buildings are able to retract into the ground when needed, and there are enough evacuation shelters to protect all of its citizens.
Launch ports and weapons caches for the Evas are located all throughout the city for use during Angel attacks. In addition, missile stations and radar sensors watch the perimeter of the city.

The GeoFront is the massive, subterranean cavity found beneath Tokyo-3 where NERV HQ was built. There’s an artificial lake and forest located at the base with train lines sloping down from the surface. When in defense mode, the city of Tokyo-3 hangs down from the ceiling.
At least a dozen kilometers in diameter, the GeoFront extends into the ground and forms a perfect sphere, though now it is more than half-filled with dirt and debris.
It is not a naturally occurring structure, nor is it manmade. Its origin is publicly unknown.

The Second Impact was a cataclysmic event which occurred in Antarctica on September 13, 2000, caused by a scientific experiment. This experiment generated an explosion so massive that the Antarctic ice caps melted and the Earth's axis shifted, locking the planet in an eternal Summer.
As a result, sea levels rose and tsunamis tore across the Southern Hemisphere. What followed was global panic. Armed conflicts kicked off across the planet, destroying nations, obliterating Old Tokyo, and wiping out half of the human population. Since a cease-fire was called, Earth's geopolitics have been shaky at best.
Public knowledge of the Second Impact has been limited. Even the most privy NERV operatives are mostly in the dark. All they know is that the Second Impact is in some way related to both the Angels and the Evangelions. You're in Misato's car. She picked you up from the hospital. There are squared neighborhoods close, skyscrapers blinking with light in the distance, and hills boxing it all in, the setting sun giving everything a dreamy, amber glow.
It's your first time taking in the city like this. Even still, you can tell something about it is off. Buildings are missing. You can see that. Empty foundations the size of city blocks remind you of the stumps of logged trees, gaps in the forest.
"It looks kind of empty," you say. "Desolate."
Misato looks down at her watch. There's a smile on her face.

(if: $tokyo3Lore is "true") [] (else:) [(set: $tokyo3Lore to "true") [(text-style:"smear")[(align:"==>")+(box:"===XXXXXXX")[Lore updated]]]]A siren blares. Those empty foundations you saw begin to move. They open. Hatches. A moment later, from beneath the ground, buildings appear. You hear the whir of machinery and the clank of metal as they grow. Your jaw is open. As you watch, the city resets itself, buildings and skyscrapers standing now where they didn't before. The skyline builds itself before your eyes. You almost can't believe it. Everything locks into place.
"This city," Misato says. "Is a fortress built to counter the angels."
You look at her. Misato smiles.
"This is Tokyo-3," she says. "And this is our city." Misato turns to you, warmth in her eyes. "More than that, this is the city you protected."
Something swells in your chest, something new. That you're not used to. You look back at the full scale of Tokyo-3-- all its majesty--, and you look at all the buildings that wouldn't be here if it weren't for you and think about all the people that live in all these buildings that wouldn't be alive if it weren't for you. The swelling grows.
It feels nice.

(if:visits is 1) [(set: $confidence to $confidence + 1)]You and Misato get back to the apartment. You carry the bags from the corner store up and set them on the table. Misato goes past you and says something about changing out of her work clothes. As she does, Pen-Pen the penguin pops his head out of his refrigerator and starts looking through the bags for his own dinner. When he finds the tuna Misato got, he squeaks with joy and waddles off into the living room.
Now alone in the kitchen, the apartment feels peaceful. Homey. After a second, you realize it's just too quiet.

2.trainingYou're in NERV headquarters.
White walls enclose you. You're in the training chamber, plugged into Unit 01. The mech moves with your thoughts, actions triggered by the controls in your hands. It's natural enough. However ...
The last time you were in here was during the Angel fight. You feel even less comfortable than normal. All you can smell is blood. Like you're drowning in it. You have to fight to keep yourself focused.
Apparently, you're doing well. The technicians tell you your sync rate with Unit 01 is high, which means your connection to the Eva is still strong. So your mind must still be intact. That much eases you. If only a little bit.
After the technicians double check your vitals, a rifle appears from a port in the wall.
One of the technicians tells you to take it. "We'll begin the training simulation now. Ready, pilot?" they ask.

Pen-Pen is a genetically-altered, warm-water pengiun. After the experiment that gave him his intelligence, Pen-Pen was planned to be killed, but Misato Katsuragi stepped in and rescued him. He now lives in a spare refrigerator in Misato's apartment, where he lounges in the cold, though he also loves hot baths.Double-click this passage to edit it.In a cloud of steam, Asuka steps out of the bathroom. Her auburn hair is still damp, towel over her shoulders, tank top clinging to her chest, shorts sticking to her thighs. You try not to notice.
"About time you show up," Asuka says. "I thought you two were going to let me starve."
"Sorry," you say. "Here." You hold out the $Asukafood you got for her. "It's your dinner."
Asuka looks at the $Asukafood with a raised brow. "$Asukafood? Really?" She turns her head. "You idiot. You really have no clue what a woman like me likes, do you?"

The three of you eat dinner. Your $food is good, and the red bean bun is nice and sweet. You notice that Asuka eats all of her $Asukafood and hardly even leaves any crumbs behind. It just puzzles you even more.
It's your night for dishes, so you clean up. The nice thing about convenience store food is that there's hardly anything to clean. You finish in only a few minutes. Still, it's kind of late.
What do you want to do for the rest of the night?
1.aBath

It's lonely in your mind. Most of your thoughts, you don't want to consider. They'll take you to even more lonely places. Subconsciously, you find yourself being pulled towards the memory of your fight with the Angel. It's painful. You've been avoiding thinking about it all day.
1.aThink2The Angel wrapped what was left of itself around Unit 01. Its core glowed like a star reaching supernova and exploded. You couldn’t see anything but light. The air itself rumbled. You were sure you were dead. Launched to heaven on a rocket. But as the smoke cleared, Unit 01 was still standing.
You saw it in the reflection of the building next to you. Its armor was scorched and melted, barely holding together. Its faceplate dislodged and fell to the street. Beneath it, you expected to see wires and the metal framework of its head, but there were no electronics. Only flesh. And as you watched, the Eva opened an eye. A bright green eye you didn't know it had. And Unit 01 fixed its gaze on you.
That's when you knew you were piloting a monster.

You were losing. The Angel held Unit 01 by the face, firing blasts of energy into its eye. You could feel each shot, like something was beating your own eye socket. You'd rather not make any trouble with Asuka, but maybe standing up to her would make her back down. Make her respect you or something. At least, that's what you hope.]
You throw your backpack over your shoulder and leave.
2.nLift
"Hey!" you shout. "What's your problem?"
"//My// problem?" Asuka asks. "I don't have any problems, besides being stuck piloting with you!"
Rei barely looks at either of you.
"Knock it off!" Misato orders. "Both of you. You need to learn to get along."
Asuka huffs.
You ball up your fists and turn away.
2.Nchanging
(set: $mood to "pissed")"That's enough, Asuka," Misato says, voice stern.
Asuka huffs.
For the rest of your training debrief, Asuka keeps giving you looks. Rei doesn't seem to notice anything is going on.
Misato dismisses the other two but asks you to stay for a moment.
"Shinji," she says, still stern but warm. "You need to stand up for yourself. Don't let Asuka push you around like that."
"Yeah," you say. "Sorry. I will."
Misato doesn't look convinced.

You look at her, head cocked in surprise. “Were you running?” you ask.
“How else was I supposed to catch up to you?” She leans against the wall, dressed in her school uniform.
The door closes, this time without an arm stopping it, and the lift begins its ascent.
2.lAsuka2
2.lSayThe corridors of NERV HQ are empty and lonely. Just as they always are. You call the lift, then wait.
It's just after five o'clock. The rest of the day is yours to do whatever. Most nights, you don't have this much time to yourself. It's almost intimidating. You don't want to waste it, but you also don't know what to do. Nor do you feel like doing much.
2.nLift2
As the lift shudders, Asuka huffs.
“Aren’t you going to ask me why I wanted to catch up to you?” she asks.
(if: $mood is 'pissed') [“Not really.”] (else:) [“I guess so.”]
Asuka crosses her arms. “You really are an idiot,” she says. “Didn’t Misato tell you she had to work late tonight?”
“What?” you say. “No, she didn’t mention it.”
“That’s right,” Asuka says, smug. “That means, tonight, we’re going to have the apartment to ourselves.”
2.lAsuka3
Your heart skips a beat. Before you can stop them, your thoughts begin to race, and your ears turn red.
As though reading your mind, Asuka glares at you. “Don’t get any weird ideas, you pervert!” she shouts. Your face goes flush. As Asuka turns away, you're not sure if her ears are red too, or if that's just her hair.
Reaching into her backpack, Asuka tells you that Misato gave her something and pulls out a credit card.
2.aOrdering
In the sweltering October heat, you and Asuka walk back to the apartment. The two of you discuss what you want to eat. She only yells at you once or twice, which is nice. You come to an agreement and decide to get snacks at the convenience store and then order a pizza at home
(Work in progress)"Did..." You swallow your words and look out the window. "Did my father show up? At the hospital, I mean. I don't remember getting any visitors."
"Shinji..." Misato begins. "Your father, Commander Ikari, is a very busy man. I'm sure he would've made it if he had the chance, but running NERV takes up all his time. It's an important responsibility. The whole world is counting on him, just like it is you."
You nod as though in a trance.
You've heard this excuse a hundred times. There's some truth to it. Father is an important man, in charge of NERV, the organization that made the Evangelions-- you know that. But that doesn't numb the pain, either.
Misato glances at you, but you don't meet her eyes.

Shinji Ikari is the fourteen-year-old pilot of Eva Unit 01. When he was only three years old, his mother died while testing a prototype Evangelion. Following her death, Shinji’s father, Gendo Ikari, abandoned him. Eleven years later, as the commander of NERV, Gendo called for Shinji, but only so he could assign him as pilot of Unit 01. In the face of humanity’s destruction, Shinji felt no choice but to take the responsibility.
It has weighed heavily upon him ever since.
Now, finally in the same city as his father, Shinji lives instead with Misato Katsuragi and fellow pilot, Asuka Langley Sohryu. For the first time in his life, Shinji has people he cares about. Although, living with two women he's attracted to makes him feel conflicted, and he often finds himself caught between his own desire for human warmth and a fear of being hurt and hated.
This conflict dictates most of Shinji’s life. It makes his normally laid back and passive personality more closed-off and reserved. This has made it difficult for Shinji to find his drive, magnified his fight with loneliness, and deepened his fear of failure.
As his life as a pilot continues, Shinji struggles to comes to terms with these issues. The only hope for humanity lies in the hands of the Evangelions-- monstrous, towering mechs designed specifically to take down the Angels. Only specially-chosen children can be trained to pilot an Evangelion.
