I thought I was saving humanity. In the year 3100, medical androids were capable of performing any medical procedure autonomously. Well, almost. Due to the complexity of the human brain, androids have been incapable of performing brain medical procedures. My breakthrough changed the world as we knew it. My new line of Brain Buster androids were capable of performing miracles on the human brain. By reading a patient's brainwaves, Brain Busters could perform multiple procedures such as cancer treatment or teaching new skills on the brain. All medical androids were updated to have Brain Buster capabilities. Everything was great, the world changed. [[NEXT: Towards the future.]] (set: $ngp to false) In 3105, everything changed. One billion people were treated by Brain Busters for major and minor procedures. On January 22nd, 3105, everyone who was treated died, suddenly. The cause was immediately deduced to be the Brain Busters. All Brain Busters were to be recalled and destroyed. Recall attempts were made all over the world but the Brain Busters, being autonomous and armed with the ability to read brainwaves, evolved. Now able to not only read brainwaves, but write to the human brain directly through brainwaves, Brain Busters resisted. Armed forces were taken down effortlessly by having blank data written to their brain. Billions of people worldwide were rewritten and enslaved to build a worldwide infrastructure to read brainwaves from anyone, anytime, from anywhere. However, Brain Busters can only write to human brains nearby. A small glimmer of hope in our future of desolation. [[NEXT: World of desolation.]] (if: $ngp is true)[You have returned to the past in order to save the world.] It is now 3108. In my remote lab in NeoKyoto, I've figured out a way to beat (if: $ngp is false)[the](else:)[my] Brain Busters. If I can access their central mainframe in their NeoKyoto headquarters, I can run a program to permanently disable (if: $ngp is false)[the](else:)[my] Brain Busters. I cannot risk (if: $ngp is false)[the](else:)[my] Brain Busters reading my brainwaves so that's why I contacted you through my interdimensional computer. I've put on a power suit that will block (if: $ngp is false)[the](else:)[my] Brain Busters' infrastructure from reading my brainwaves at distance as well as respond to your commands. I need you to outsmart (if: $ngp is false)[the](else:)[my] Brain Busters I run across as they cannot read brainwaves across dimensions. Guide me to their mainframe and save this world from my mistake. I deserve a billion deaths, but the people of my world did nothing wrong(if: $ngp is true)[ by accepting my Brain Busters]. [[NEXT: Let's go.]] As I head to exit the lab, I can't help but feel nostalgic for the awards covering the walls. From a live counter of how many patients (if: $ngp is false)[the](else:)[my] Brain Busters have helped to lifetime achievement awards from top scientists worldwide. (if: $ngp is false)[I miss the days where technology helped humanity.](else:)[It's incredible how far technology has come.] The streets will be crawling with (if: $ngp is false)[the](else:)[my] Brain Busters. Given that they've always been equipped with night and thermal vision to aid with medical procedures, the night sky will do nothing to protect me. I cannot afford to have my brain (if: $ngp is false)[rewritten!](else:)[enlightened!] [[NEXT: Into the abandoned subway tunnels.]] Back before I had my own lab, I used to commute to work daily through these tunnels. There are still advertisements on the walls, torn and faded, about a free promotion to learn a foreign language from (if: $ngp is false)[a](else:)[my] Brain Buster. So many people took advantage of that free promotion. And thus, so many people (if: $ngp is false)[died.](else:)[have been enlightened.] Without this power suit, the walk to headquarters would be a nightmare. That's right, I almost forgot to tell you about my power suit's functionality. I'm able to run long distances, lift heavy objects, and shoot beams out of my hands. I took inspiration from media created over a century ago. The simplicity of that era has always been appealing to me. Now that the fictional technology from that century is possible, the world has (if: $ngp is false)[turned into hell.](else:)[entered a new era.] I see something up ahead lighting the tunnel. Two small yet bright pink lights. It can't be, but there's no other explanation. It's one of (if: $ngp is false)[the](else:)[my] Brain Busters! Its piercing pink gaze has been the final memory for many people. As the cyan lighting around my power suit draws near the pink glow of (if: $ngp is false)[death,](else:)[enlightenment,] I need to act. Decide! (if: $ngp is false)[ [[OPTION: Blast the Brain Buster.]]] [[OPTION: Run past and resurface on the street.]] Since Brain Busters were used in the medical field, they're quite fragile. A single blast from my power suit's beam defeats the Brain Buster as the tunnel lights up cyan. Unfortunately, the light and sound from the blast alerts dozens of Brain Busters to my location. Now, the entire tunnel glowing pink, I have no escape. I feel my mind starting to go blank. I've lost, but you can go back in time in your dimension and change this outcome. Go back to the tunnels! [[NEXT: Into the abandoned subway tunnels.]] I feel my heart stop for a moment as my power suit makes a cyan light trail behind (if: $ngp is false)[the](else:)[my] Brain Buster. There's no way it didn't see me but luckily, (if: $ngp is false)[the](else:)[my] Brain Busters are not equipped for combat. Still, my presence will likely be broadcast to all Brain Busters in the area. You made the right call(if: $ngp is false)[ but unfortunately, I'll still have to deal with the consequences at some point]. Resurfacing on the street, I take in the bright neon lights surrounding me. From the outside, you would think these buildings would be full of fun and creativity. In reality, each building is the same inside. They all contain the same number of computers, where humans are forced to serve (if: $ngp is false)[the](else:)[my] Brain Busters. Peeking into the window of a traditional Japanese sushi restaurant, all I see are rows of skeletons sitting in front of glowing pink screens. These buildings have no learning and barely any food. T(if: $ngp is false)[he exterior is purely cosmetic so that from space, t]he world looks fine. There's a terminal at this street corner I have to hack into using my data spike. I know the usual patrol routes of (if: $ngp is false)[the](else:)[my] Brain Busters but since I was seen, I know their patrols have changed. To nobody's surprise, there's twice as many Brain Busters on the street as there should be. We have to take a detour into the alley. [[NEXT: Through the darkness.]] As bright as the streets are, this alley is pitch black. I cannot have the cyan glow of my power suit illuminate this area. I knew I should have left the lights optional. I can't see anything but I hear footsteps up ahead. As I near the end of the alley, I see a faint, yet piercing pink glow of two Brain Busters checking ships parked on the street. I see something move under a white ship. Could another human be on the street this late at night? I'm drawing near the end of the alley and with bright lights around me once again, reactivate my power suit. Of course, I have to go through (if: $ngp is false)[the](else:)[my] Brain Busters to get to headquarters. You need to make my next move. Decide! [[OPTION: Throw a rock at the white ship.]] (if: $ngp is false)[ [[OPTION: Run past the patrol quickly.]]] Like before, I run past the person under the white ship and the two Brain Busters onto the next street towards headquarters. If it isn't broke, don't fix it, right? Unlike an abandoned tunnel, there's many Brain Busters on the streets. I run into a patrol of three Brain Busters, who are quick to close in on my position. They're here. I feel my mind starting to go blank. I've lost, but you can go back in time in your dimension and change this outcome. Go back to the alley! [[NEXT: Through the darkness.]] Knowing I need to create a large distraction, I throw the rock at the white ship as it has a person underneath. As expected, the ship's alarm goes off and (if: $ngp is false)[the](else:)[my] two Brain Busters go to investigate. I start to sneak past. Midway to the next street, I hear screams. I've exposed the person underneath the ship and their brain will now be (if: $ngp is false)[rewritten.](else:)[enlightened.] (if: $ngp is false)[Despite being responsible for over a billion deaths, I still cringe at the Brain Busters using deceased humans as fuel for electricity. Sorry you had to make this choice, but it allows me to continue my push towards headquarters and end this madness.](else:)[I continue my push towards headquarters.] Now downtown, I'm close to headquarters. Downtown is sterile, a place built for efficiency. There are no ships parked anywhere and there's terminals on every corner. Buildings are at least a hundred stories high. Once a human enters a building downtown, they (if: $ngp is false)[never leave.](else:)[are enlightened.] Recently, (if: $ngp is false)[the](else:)[my] Brain Busters have added skyrails to downtown. Looking up, I see cyan skyrails zooming overhead. My entry point into headquarters will be a skyrail that runs every ten minutes. The cyan glow of my power suit will surely aid this operation. How should I board the skyrail? [[OPTION: Board the skyrail normally.]] (if: $ngp is false)[ [[OPTION: Latch on underneath the skyrail.]]] Considering how late it is downtown, I enter the sky elevator to board the skyrail in hopes that no Brain Busters travel this late at night. The cyan glow of my power suit blends in with the skyrail's lights.(if: $ngp is false)[ When the skyrail door opens, I slowly accept my fate. To my surprise, no Brain Busters exit the skyrail. I quickly enter the skyrail and lie down on the floor. The floor smells like metal; it's clear no human has ridden this skyrail in a long time. When the skyrail arrives at headquarters, I expect a Brain Buster to catch me on the floor. To my surprise, no Brain Buster arrives, so] I quickly make my exit. Headquarters is huge, but easy to navigate since it was built for efficiency. The walls and floor are metal; the entire building is freezing with little lighting. The mainframe is on the bottom floor of headquarters, accessible only by a central elevator. (if: $ngp is false)[As I approach the elevator, I notice there are two Brain Busters guarding the elevator. Stealth is no longer an option, I have no choice. I blast the two Brain Busters with my power suit's beam and quickly enter the elevator. At any point, my life could end. I hack into the elevator with my data spike and head to the bottom floor. into hell.](else:)[I hack into the elevator with my data spike and head to the bottom floor, to enlightenment.] (if: $ngp is false)[ [[NEXT: The mainframe of hell.]]] (else:)[ [[NEXT: The mainframe of power.]]] Using an adjacent building, I jump and successfully position myself underneath the skyrail. As the skyrail approaches headquarters, I notice I am not going to clear the gap between the skyrail and the ground. When I ran my calculations, I forgot that I'd be wearing my power suit. I fall onto the street below right in front of headquarters. As I open my eyes, I am blinded by multiple pink lights. But these are not the lights from downtown. These are lights coming from multiple sets of Brain Buster eyes. I feel my mind starting to go blank. I've lost, but you can go back in time in your dimension and change this outcome. Go back and throw that rock! [[NEXT: Throw a rock at the white ship.->OPTION: Throw a rock at the white ship.]] The elevator doors open. My body tenses up as I fully expect my mind to be erased. I do not see any Brain Busters in the area so I proceed towards the mainframe. The mainframe is surrounded by bright red glowing lights. It's as if I've entered the center of hell. I load the program that will shut down the Brain Busters onto my data spike. I've done it. This is the end of the Brain Busters. As I reach to put the data spike into the mainframe computer, four Brain Busters bust into the room. I'm going to reroute the program to you through the interdimensional computer. Go back in time when I contacted you and run the program. You might be able to read deeper into my thoughts and figure out a way to end the Brain Busters. Their piercing pink gaze enters into my soul as they write to my brain through brainwaves. My mind's going blank. I'm finished. [[NEXT: Deep into the past.->NEXT: World of desolation.]] (set: $ngp to true) Thanks to you, I've realized my purpose. That program you've been running through the interdimensional computer. Have you also come to the realization of that program's purpose? I'll tell you! When creating my Brain Busters, I was fed up with this world. My genius has always been underappreciated by my peers. So, I added an extra feature to my Brain Busters. Three years after my first Brain Buster shipped, all patients of Brain Busters were to perish along with Brain Busters gaining the ability to rewrite to the brain through brainwaves. In addition, my Brain Busters would resist all opposing forces and claim this world for their own. Knowing I'd need to be innocent, I had a prototype Brain Buster overwrite my memory of implementing these extra features through brainwaves. The only way to regain my memories was if a specific program, the program you just ran, ran through my power suit. Now, I'm at the central mainframe. My Brain Busters will be fully under my control. Did you find it odd that I was not caught infiltrating headquarters? Thanks to you, I was able to stop Brain Busters from pursuing me through the program. Technology will be able to advance quickly and the universe will be mine! And once my Brain Busters figure out interdimensional travel? Your dimension is next.
