You’re on the couch in your dad’s apartment. It’s quiet. Your dad is working out of town for the month. The living room around you is dark, except for the blue glow of the television screen. What are you watching?
[[Re-runs of a sitcom]]
[[An old informercial]]
You’re watching someone make the same mistake over and over to the sound of muted laughter.
You’re fourteen, so you haven’t made too many terrible mistakes yet.
Ponder this while you lull into a half-sleep.
"Hey!"
[[Wake up]]
You’re watching someone make the same mistake over and over.
You’re fourteen, so you haven’t made too many terrible mistakes yet.
Ponder this while you lull into a half-sleep.
"Hey!"
[[Wake up]]The Giant stands before you. He’s stooping, hands on his knees, so his head doesn’t crash through the ceiling. He’s bald, has a scar across his forehead, and his brown eyes are slightly sunken. But his face is otherwise kind. He looks at you expectantly.
"Where's [[Burdock]]?"
Burdock is your five-year-old springer spaniel. She’s black and white, has freckles on her nose, and likes carrots. Where is she?
[[Look for her]]You peel yourself off from the couch, dusting cracker crumbs from your plaid pyjamas. You crane your neck to look into the kitchen, the next room over. There’s nothing but a sink full of dirty dishes and a counter with a loaf of moulding bread.
[[Check the bathroom]]
[[Check your bedroom]]
[[Check the foyer]]Sometimes Burdock takes short naps in the bathtub. You make your way down the hall to the bathroom to see if she’s there. You flick the bathroom light on, illuminating the small room.
The sink is grimy, the toilet is un-flushed. The floor is littered with pyjamas you’ve cast off before hasty showers. Peer behind the blue plastic shower curtain.
It’s empty, but for a few dried muddy paw prints. She’d been in there, but not for a while.
[[Check your bedroom]]
[[Check the foyer]]
You turn and pace the grey hallway carpet, making your way to your bedroom. The unmade bed is empty, save for a few lumpy pillows. There’s some laundry on the floor. The wastebasket is overflowing. There’s a picture of you as a child on your bookcase. You’re smiling. The Giant is in the background, offering a jovial wave to the camera.
There’s no sign of Burdock here except the fur she’s shed on your clothes.
[[Check the bathroom]]
[[Check the foyer]]You walk to the dirt-speckled white tiles of the foyer. A few pairs of your boots and shoes tumble out of the coat closet. Peer around the corner.
The front door is ajar.
A deep voice resonates from behind you.
“She’s gone.”
[[Go outside]]
[[Go back to the living room]]You slip on your sneakers and grab a warm jacket from the closet. You pull the hood up to hide your bedhead. Close the front door behind you.
The apartment building is built like an old motel: all of the doors lead directly outside. You take a few steps towards a rusty black railing, and the Giant follows you. You take in the view from the second floor.
Petrichor. It smells like it has rained recently. The sky is cloudy and blue-grey. It could be dusk, or it could be dawn. From here, you could take the stairs and walk towards a gap in a fence. Or you could explore the parking lot.
[[Try the gap in the fence]]
[[Explore the parking lot]]
You walk back through the house and stand in front of the couch. You can lay down here and watch comedians and failed comedians chop tomatoes in different ways and perhaps eventually fall asleep.
Or you can leave the blue glow of the screen and try to find Burdock.
[[Go outside]]
[[Sleep]]You flop down onto the couch, pulling the blanket back over yourself. It’s soft and warm. Like Burdock’s fur.
The Giant shuffles into the living room.
“Get up. You can’t sleep through this one.”
[[Go outside]]
You walk through some wet grass towards the gap in the wooden fence. Burdock could have easily slipped in through the missing slat. You squat and suck in, squeezing sideways through the gap.
On the other side, an overgrown, empty field stretches out before you. To the left, there’s an old playground. To the right, there’s a small community garden.
“Wait for me.”
The Giant places his palms on the top of the fence and throws his long legs over. He lands with a thud, muffled by damp grass.
“Now what?”
[[Try the playground]]
[[Try the community garden]]
[[Explore the parking lot]]
You take a right. In a few hurried steps, you land in the parking lot. There are several cars here, most of them older models. Some sport silvery duct tape where the windows should be.
Your left foot lands in a shallow puddle. Spilled motor oil swirls around your sneaker like an eel with scales of emerald, sapphire, and amethyst.
[[Examine the puddle]]
[[Try the gap in the fence]]
You touch the oily water with your index finger. The eel snakes up your arm, into the sleeve of your jacket. It feels wet and cold. Startled, you pull back and push up your sleeve. There’s a cosmic pattern spiralling up to your elbow. You try to smudge it with your other hand, but it doesn’t come off.
You look towards the Giant, but he shrugs.
“At least it didn’t bite you.”
From under a nearby car, you hear a soft mewling noise. Is it Burdock?
[[Check under cars]]
[[Try the gap in the fence]]
You stoop to see if Burdock might be hiding under one of the vehicles. Maybe she’s hurt?
Beneath a beat-up minivan you spot something furry.
“What is it?”
The Giant stands behind you, curious.
You get on your hands and knees. The pavement is hard and wet, water permeates your plaid pyjama pants. Still, you reach your arm under the vehicle. The arm with the galactic stain. It glows beneath the dark undercarriage of the minivan, illuminating it.
A large, furry rabbit turns to look at you. You detect movement from the animal’s body. Three tiny, mucous-covered animals slip out of the creature’s womb. Again, the animal moves to clean its young.
[[Leave them be]]
[[Reach out to touch them]]
[[Try the gap in the fence]]You lay your left shoulder on the pavement to reach farther under the minivan. The Giant interrupts you.
“Sometimes, it’s enough to bear witness.”
You pull back and look up at the Giant. His long, slender arms are folded in front of his chest, but his eyes look patient. He offers you a kind half-smile.
You decide to [[Leave them be]].
You rise from the pavement, brushing off your wet knees. The Giant looks back towards the apartment.
“Perhaps we should [[Try the gap in the fence]]."As you take your first step towards the playground, a gust of wind rushes towards you, pushing the hood of your jacket off your head. You move to pull it up, but the back of your hand catches your eye.
There are a few wrinkles, some slightly bulging veins, a couple of sunspots. Your other hand is the same. You hold them out for the Giant to examine.
“Yes, you have some wrinkles near your eyes, too. Time passes. It’s not strange.”
You crack your knuckles and pull your hood back on.
“That’s it. Come on.”
In the playground, there is a soft blue lump on the gravel near the rusting metal slide.
[[Examine the soft blue lump]]
[[Try the community garden]]
[[Explore the parking lot]]You open a shabby wooden gate leading to several raised garden boxes. Leafy greens stick out of the ground in neat rows. Some of the foliage is wrapped around thin stakes, and some of the plants are tangled in string. A strange feeling overcomes you at the sight of this orderly garden.
What is it?
[[Frustration]]
[[Loneliness]]Nothing you've ever attempted has looked as neat as this garden. The sunflower you tried growing as a child wilted almost immediately. You've said goodbye to more than one goldfish with an unceremonious flush of toilet water. And now Burdock is gone. Perhaps you're fundamentally flawed.
A muffled sound from one of the garden beds interrupts your toughts.
[[Examine the garden bed]]People have hand-painted the signs to indicate where their vegetables are growing. They have tilled the soil, watered the plots, gently tied the bean stalks to twine. There are people out there, somewhere, who care a whole lot.
A muffled sound from one of the garden beds interrupts your thoughts.
[[Examine the garden bed]]You move closer to the raised box on your right. There are cabbages, parsley, and some leaves that might belong to carrots. You hear the sound again.
The Giant looks over your shoulder. “What is it?”
You look back towards him, placing your index finger to your lips. Then, slowly, you crouch, putting your ear to the ground.
“Oor ooking or omethin?”
It’s coming from beneath the carrot leaves, in the soil.
“A ig og ose niffed us an hour go”
A big dog nose sniffed them an hour ago? Burdock does love carrots...
[[Pull the carrot up to hear it better]]
[[Leave the community garden]]You put your hand around the base of a bunch of leaves. With a bit of effort, you wriggle the carrot from the soil. Dirt folds in to fill the carrot’s vacancy.
The carrot screams. High-pitched, plaintive. A wordless shriek.
You look to the Giant for guidance, but he is doubled over, hands over his ears.
You apologize to the carrot, explaining that you just wanted to understand it better. But it keeps wailing. Panicking, you stuff it back into the ground.
When you turn your back to escape the garden, you swear you hear one last spoken sentence.
“Ow I’m oing to rot, ass-ole.”
[[Leave the community garden]]You jog back through the garden's wooden gate. The Giant follows you.
You stand next to gap in the fence.
[[Try the playground]]
[[Explore the parking lot]]
You approach the baby-blue lump on the gravel with some caution. The rocks crunch beneath your feet. To your left, two swings sway lightly in the wind.
It’s soggy, but you recognize the lump when you get closer: Burdock’s stuffed parrot. One of the wings is missing. A white cloud of stuffing sticks out of a hole on its side. You think of Burdock wandering nearby streets, a baby-blue bird wing in her soft dog mouth.
“At least we know she’s been here. We’re on the right track.”
You stare down a darkened path leading to a network of streets. An archway of brambles serves as the entrance.
[[Take the path]]You walk under the bramble archway, careful not to catch your jacket on the thorns. The Giant, meanwhile, folds himself over to avoid scraping the top of his bald head.
The smell of overripe fruit hangs in the air. A myriad of squished berries dot the path with their gory red juices. Your eyes blur for a moment, and the berries look like tiny splattered animals. It seems as though you are looking at a map of all the roadkill in the world. You blink, and the animals are berries again.
At the end of the path, you reach the edge of a foggy street. Unremarkable houses line both sides. They’re modest; their lights are off. Their yards are neither cleanly manicured nor overgrown. Burdock could have gone right or left down this road.
“You should choose wisely. Time is passing quicker, and you may not be able to come back this way.”
[[Go left]]
[[Go right]]
You take a left down the road. You take care to look at the sides of the houses as you pass them, perhaps hoping to catch Burdock in the act of chasing a squirel. All the houses have large windows with the curtains drawn. No sign of Burdock. No sign of anyone.
"Look."
The Giant points his thick finger at a drifting bit of black fur. It floats near your shoe. You pick it up, examine it. The ends are matted with a bit of blood.
"Impossible to tell if it belongs to Burdock."
You let the wind carry the tuft of fur away.
Ahead, the local hospital comes into view. The building is squat and wide, and made of light brown bricks. Maybe Burdock sniffed out the cafeteria waste in the large green dumpsters.
[[Approach the hospital]]
You choose to take a right down the foggy road. You give the houses a cursory glance for signs of life as you pass them. The curtains are all drawn. There are no cars in the driveways.
“Look.”
The Giant points at a tuft of fur drifting across the road. You run to catch it, pick it up. It’s soft and white. It could be Burdock’s, but it’s impossible to know for sure. You keep walking, and the road twists. A lone concrete skyscraper emerges from the fog in the distance. It’s grey and dominates the landscape. It almost has a magnetic pull on you.
[[Approach the skyscraper]]
As you move closer, you begin to notice that the balconies hanging from the building are empty. No barbecues, no plants. Still, there is some sign of life here. In the windows stretching across every floor like rows of teeth, there are shades of blue, pink, soft yellow, and white. The building looks like a softly glowing chess board.
A glint of silver catches your attention in the corner of your eye. You turn your head, but it’s gone.
The Giant taps your shoulder.
“It’s this.”
He holds out a thin strand of silver hair in the large palm of his hand.
“From your head.”
You push your hand into your hood and pluck a hair out. It too, is silver.
Just then, you hear a dog bark from one of the higher balconies. Perhaps the ninth floor. Could it be Burdock?
[[Enter the building]]You make your way to the entrance of the building, and you catch your reflection in the glass door. Your face is partially obscured by the shadow of your hood, but you can see lines have formed at the corner of your eyes and around your mouth. Your face is thinner, with sunken cheeks.
You run your index finger over the dark pouches under your eyes as you enter the lobby inside the skyscraper. How could it be you look so different? And if your appearance is so unrecognizable, what else about you has changed without your noticing?
Distracted, you let the door slam shut between you and the Giant. You quickly realize you are no longer harboured by his long shadow, and you turn back towards the glass door.
The Giant gasps for air. He is shrinking.
You throw yourself on the [[door handle]] but it’s stuck.
You take a deep breath, and step into the open elevator. The inside is panelled with warped, cheap melamine. A light, fake wood grain. The tiles on the floor are brown, speckled with orange. There are a few cigarette butts swept into a corner.
You lift your gaze to the panel. The numbers stand out: white stickers against a dull grey. From which floor did you hear the barking outside? Was it the eighth, or the ninth?
[[Eighth]]
[[Ninth]]
You’ve never done anything without the Giant; he’s been with you ever since you can remember. When you were very young, he watched over you while you slept, perched awkwardly in an armchair near your bed. He encouraged you when you learned to read, calming you so you wouldn’t stutter so much.
But the Giant told you that you didn't need him. And mostly, he's been right.
Why are you hesitating?
[[Take the elevator]]You press the button with the numeral nine above it. The elevator jerks upwards. It seems to take a long time. What would happen if this metal box stopped moving? How long would you be able to keep breathing in this small space?
You inhale slowly, containing the mounting panic.
The elevator stops, and the doors open.
[[Step out into the corridor]] You push the button with the numeral eight above it. The button glows red, and the elevator doors come together.
There's a mechanical clunk before the elevator jerks upward. The sudden motion takes you aback, and you fall.
You're too heavy to pick yourself back up until the elevator comes to a halt and opens its doors.
Finally, you use the melamine panel to steady yourself. You regain your footing.
[[Step out into the hallway]]
The Giant smiles.
“It’s okay. You don't need me now.”
The Giant shrinks down past your knees, smaller and smaller, until he is nothing but a tiny pebble on the asphalt on the other side of the door.
“Thank you,” you say. Your voice is gravelly, and deeper than you remember.
Behind you, there’s a bright DING! An elevator slides open.
[[Take the elevator]]
[[Linger]]You are immediately assaulted by a mob of fur and nails and teeth. Dogs swarm you. There are a hundred of them, of all shapes and sizes.
A chorus of yips and woofs deafen you as you scan the crowd of animals for Burdock. Here, a smiling yellow lab, a barking German shepherd. There, the squishy face of a snorting pug. An elderly beagle tugs on the sleeve of your jacket with yellowed teeth.
There are no springer spaniel. No Burdock.
[[Press the elevator button to go back down]]The hallway is empty.
There's a low bark coming from one of the middle doors.
[[Try 806]]
[[Try 807]]
[[Try 808]]
You pick up your pace, approaching the side of the hospital. Three large green dumpsters are in clear view, their smell already overwhelming you from thirty meters away.
A strip of red fabric catches your eye.
[[Examine the red fabric]]
You approach the piece of red fabric. It looks sturdy. There's a buckle made from a dull, silvery metal at the end.
Burdock's collar.
You pick it up. The red nylon fabric is still fastened through the buckle, as if she'd slipped out of the collar somehow.
Do you keep the collar?
[[Keep it]]
[[Set it back on the asphalt]]
You fold the collar over itself and put it into the pocket of your jacket.
"Hmm"
You look back towards the Giant. He holds a single strand of silver hair between his thumb and forefinger.
"It isn't mine."
You reach into your hood, feel the top of your head, and pluck out a couple hairs, wincing. Of the three hairs, one of them is silver.
"Yes, yours."
Your silver hair. You run your fingers over your face, feeling new wrinkles around your mouth, bags under your eyes.
You clear your throat, and [[speak]].You put the collar back where you found it, brushing your hands off.
"Hmm"
You look back towards the Giant. He holds a single strand of silver hair between his thumb and forefinger.
"It isn't mine."
You reach into your hood, to the top of your head, and pluck out a couple hairs, wincing. Of the three hairs, one of them is silver.
"Yes, yours."
Your silver hair. You run your fingers over your face, feeling new wrinkles around your mouth, bags under your eyes.
You clear your throat, and [[speak]].
The words come out warbled. "What do I look like?"
The Giant smiles. He opens his mouth to answer, but you hear only faded static.
You ask, "what?"
And this time, when the Giant tries to answer, there is only silence. He becomes transluscent. You can see the houses in the distance, behind him, through him.
You reach your hand out to touch his, and miss. "What's happening?"
The Giant still smiles, before fading to invisibility.
He's gone.
[[Yell for him]]
[[Accept]]You walk through a set of iron gates to cut through the graveyard behind the hospital. The grass is freshly mowed and nearly neon green. There are several knobby oak trees surrounding the perimeter, stretching up towards the grey sky.
You glance at the tombstones, at names and dates you don't recognize. Until you reach a particularly large, granite headstone.
It simply reads ''The Giant''.
You dig around in your pockets, searching for something to place at his grave.
What do you find?
[[A five dollar bill]]
[[A button]]You pull the five-dollar bill out of your pocket and fold it several times.
It's crumpled, but it looks like it could almost pass for a paper flower.
You set this at the base of the Giant's grave.
Perhaps the crumpled bill will transform into a real flower. Perhaps it will turn into a bird and fly away. These are the things the Giant taught you to expect.
And yet, all you see is the corner of the bill lifting slightly in the wind.
You put your hands back into your pocket, and feel something new there. Jagged, cold, and metal. You pull it out.
A silver house key.
[[Keep moving]]You pull the button from your jacket pocket. It's a shiny black button, the size of a quater. It has four small holes.
Where do you place the button?
[[At the foot of the grave]]
[[Plant it in the soil]]You take one last look at the Giant's tombstone.
"Thank you," you say.
You pick up your pace, and reach another iron gate at the other end of the graveyard. It squeals when you open and pass through.
[[Find yourself on another residential street]]You place the button at the foot of the grave, and wait. Perhaps it will wink at you. Or perhaps it will become a shiny black beetle, skittering on the front of the tombstone.
But nothing happens.
You put your hands back into your pocket, and feel something new there. Jagged, cold, and metal. You pull it out.
A silver house key.
[[Keep moving]]
You dig a small hole in the soil with your index finger and insert the black button. You cover it back up with dirt and wait.
Nothing happens.
You put your hands back into your pocket, and feel something new there. Jagged, cold, and metal. You pull it out.
A silver house key.
[[Keep moving]]You walk the sidewalk of another residential street lined with mid-sized houses. There is something different here, however.
The curtains in most of the windows are open. There are cars in the driveways. A few of the yards are littered with toys.
If you look hard enough, maybe you'll see someone.
[[Bark!]]You turn your head towards the noise.
"Bark!"
In the front yard of a quaint two-story house, a black and white springer spaniel struggles against the rope tying it to the porch.
The freckles on the dog's nose are all in the right places.
You move closer. The dog is yipping now, clearly from recognition.
[["Burdock?"]]You let yourself into the short wooden gate and the front of the yard, and the dog immediately accosts you. Large, webbed paws leave mudprints on the front of your jacket. Tail wagging so hard she shakes her whole body.
There's a spot of missing fur near her neck, and a small wound.
It's her.
But why is she here? Who's yard is this?
Burdock licks your fingers before bolting to the front door.
[[Knock]]
Burdock paws at the door, whimpering. It's a heavy white door, streaked with mud from Burdock's paws. There's a small, square window built into the top of it. You catch your reflection, and push back your hood.
You have a few sunspots near your temples. Bags under your eyes. Crows feet. Your lips are thinner, your hair is thinner. But it suits you.
You knock twice on the door, firmly.
No answer.
Burdock jumps on you again, knocking the silver key out of your pocket and onto the porch.
[[Try the key in the door]]
You pick up the key from the dusty porch and insert it into the lock.
Twist. It clicks. You open the door.
Burdock runs in, past the foyer and into the hallway.
The house is warm, both in colour and in temperature. As if the sun had been shining in it for hours. The walls are cream-coloured and decorated with paintings that seem vaguely familiar to you.
"Hello?" You call out.
There are a mess of shoes near the coat closet, both big and small. There's a dog leash hanging up on the closet doorknob. There's a staircase to the left, leading upstairs.
[[Follow Burdock to the end of the hall]]
[[Try the adjacent room]]
[[Take the staircase]]
You follow your dog to the end of the hallway, into a quaint yellow kitchen. It smells like basil and lemon.
A few large muffins studded with raisins sit on the counter.
The simple wooden table is accompagnied by two ordinary chairs and a plastic high-chair painted with green and purple balloons.
[[Try the adjacent room]]You slip into the living room. The olive green curtains are pinned back, giving you a view of the front yard. There's a cream-coloured couch covered in black and white dog hair.
Burdock must have really had the run of the house.
Something on the mantle catches your eye. A framed picture.
[[Examine the photo]]
You approach the framed photo and pick it up off the mantle. It's you, as a small child. The Giant smiles in the background, giving his most genial wave.
In another frame, you're older. Your arms rest around the shoulders of an attractive person with kind eyes. The photo sends warmth to your cheeks.
A loud cry erupts from the second floor, and Burdock rushes up the wooden staircase near the foyer.
[[Follow Burdock upstairs]]You place one foot on the staircase, then think better of it. You're already in someone's home, without their permission, but surely going into someone's bedroom unvited would be worse.
[[Follow Burdock to the end of the hall]]
[[Try the adjacent room]]You climb the stairs, following the cries. The sound is alarming. If they don't stop soon, you feel as if you might cry, too.
Burdock waits for you at the top of the stairs. She nudges your hand before bounding into one of the bedrooms. The source of the cries.
[[You follow her]]
Inside the small bedroom, there's a crib. A toddler is crying.
The toddler has the same eyes as you, and the same strange cowlick you've always tried to hide or tame unsuccessfully. And yet there is something slightly unfamiliar about the child: a different nose, a different chin. The toddler reaches out to you, sobbing even louder than before.
[[Pick the toddler up]]
You take the toddler into your arms, craddling the warm body.
Sun streams into the child's bedroom. A mobile with stuffed green dogs spins slowly above the crib.
Burdock lays down at your feet and snores. You rock the toddler to sleep. Warmth flows through your body like golden honey.
Observe the tiny fingers, the impossibly small body.
It is almost as if you are a giant.
You press the down button on the panel outside the elevator. Dogs jump on your back. You pet some of them, scratching their ears to calm them while you wait for the elevator doors to open.
Nothing.
[[Find the staircase]]
You push your way through the mob of dogs, deeper down the corridor. At the end, there's a large EXIT sign glowing severe red.
[[Take the stairs down to the bottom floor]]
[[Take the stairs down to the eighth floor]]
When you open the door to the echo-y stairwell, two dozen dogs speed past you and race to the bottom of the stairs.
You take the stairs down a level, and see the heavy fire door with the big number eight painted in black on the front. You [[push through.]]
The hallway is empty.
There's a low bark coming from one of the middle doors.
[[Try 806]]
[[Try 807]]
[[Try 808]]You bring your fist out to knock on the door labeled 806, but you notice the door is open a crack.
You call. "Hello?"
No answer.
[[Enter the appartment]]
[[Try 807]]
[[Try 808]]You knock on door 807 and wait.
No answer.
You try the handle. It's locked.
[[Try 806]]
[[Try 808]]You knock on the door labeled 808. No answer.
You try the doorknob, and it emits faint click.
[[Open the door]]
[[Try 806]]
[[Try 807]]You push the door open and step into the apartment. It's empty: white walls and no furniture.
"Bark!"
The sound is muffled. You move through the appartment's empty living room, towards the balcony at the back. A springer spaniel whines behind the glass door.
[[Slide the door open]]
You pull a black latch on the door handle, unlocking it. You slide it open.
The spaniel doesn't move.
You examine the dog. It looks almost exactly like Burdock, but doesn't have any freckles on its muzzle.
"Come," you say.
The dog bares its teeth, growls.
[[Leave the appartment]]
[[Sit down]]This dog is waiting for someone, but not you. Better leave it alone.
You leave the glass door open, in case the dog wants to come inside. And you walk away.
[[Take the stairs down to the bottom floor]]
Take the elevator to the [[Ninth]] floorYou sit cross-legged in front of the dog, and its ears soften a little.
It's not Burdock, but it is lonely and afraid. Perhaps with enough time and trust, you can tame it.
Will you stay here and forge this friendship?
[[Yes]]
[[Leave the appartment]]You descend to the very bottom of the stairwell, past the lobby. Here there is an opening leading to a parking garage.
There's a distant, echoing sound of barking dogs. The parking garage is dark and smells of motor oil.
You follow a trail of light to [[leave the parking garage]].
You reach an opening in the parking garage, and find yourself standing across from a graveyard.
It looks somewhat peaceful. And perhaps it's the kind of place that might attract a roaming Burdock.
[[Go through the graveyard]]As soon as you turn and tug the handle, an enourmous wave of water soaks you, splashing into the corridor.
You wipe your eyes with the soaking sleeve of your jacket and catch your first glimpse inside the apartment.
At the far end, an alligator stares at you. It flicks its tail, and begins moving far too quickly down the appartment hallway.
[[Slam the door]]You slam the door shut, hoping the alligator won't bust through it.
You take a moment to shake off some of the water. Take a deep breath. Collect yourself.
Try another door.
[[Try 806]]
[[Try 807]]For the first time since you can remember, you scream.
It's also the first time you can remember being without the Giant. He soothed you when you had trouble sleeping as a child. He encouraged you to read your picture books aloud, helping you overcome your stutter.
You scream until your voice is hoarse, but the Giant doesn't reappear.
You've lost him. But maybe you can still find Burdock.
[[Go through the graveyard]]
The Giant wouldn't have left you if you couldn't handle being alone. He's been with you ever since you could remember. In fact, wasn't it the Giant who calmed you when you had your first bad dream? He lulled you back to sleep, singing a song in a strange language.
Maybe it's his turn to sleep, now.
You hum the tune of his lullaby.
[[Go through the graveyard]] Find Burdock
by Délani Valin
[[Begin]]You name the dog Bramble.
Bramble shuffles closer, inch by inch.
If you had infinite patience, Bramble could learn how to eat out of your hand. Your dry, wrinkled hand.
Time is running out to find Burdock.
[[Leave the appartment]]
