The cart pulls up to a rambling wooden building that looks like it has been haphazardly added on to several times. A sign painted above the door proclaims it to be **"Obsidian Depths Mine"** and beneath that, **"Borune Oremonger, proprietor."**
You walk in and are shown to an office that aspires toward ornateness. Seated behind the desk is a rotund dwarf with a sandy chinstrap beard.
"Eh? So you're the adventurer we hired to deal with this, eh, problem," he says. "We've got an issue with one of my employees, **Engineer Frymock.** Frymock was in charge of building mining contraptions, but the damn gnome went crazy and barricaded himself in the lower mines. He's got his drillbot with him and nobody want to tangle with it, eh?"
*Roll a Wisdom (Insight) check. If you roll 12 or higher, (link: "you notice something")[you can tell he's hiding something about Frymock.]*
"He's locked the entry to the lower mines. That's no problem; I've got a spare key and our blacksmith is making a copy as we speak. Go **talk to the smith and get the key**, then fetch Frymock and bring him back, dead or alive. You'll get your **50 gold reward,** but bring me anything he has on him." He dismisses you with a nod.
Go to Miner's Hollow
<small>Images</small><h2>How to run this adventure</h2>
<hr color="red">
This game is a hybrid of a choose-your-own adventure type computer game and a pen-and-paper roleplaying game. It is compatible with the <a href="https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/" target="_blank">fifth edition (5e) of the most popular roleplaying game in the world</a> (you know the one I'm talking about, though I can't say the name due to copyright restrictions). The mechanics of this adventure are licensed under the Open Game License->OGL. All images used in this game are in the public domain, except where noted.
Note: If you drop to 0 HP in this game and have no immediate mechanisms to bring you back, you are dead. There are no "near-death" endings (as in The Saint's Tomb) nor are there any chances that someone will revive you. You can start over with a new character (hardcore mode) or restart from your last save point (forgiving mode).
This game does not keep constant track your position relative to your enemy. Every time that you are asked to give a distance from the enemy, you'll need to do that calculation yourself and select the distance from the dropdown box.
<h3> If you've never played 5e before</h3>
You may want to start with my first game, <a href="https://sayeth.itch.io/the-saints-tomb">The Saint's Tomb</a>. It's similar to this game, but designed to give you more prompts and help in playing. Once you finish (and hopefully win!) that game, you can return to this game.
<h3>If you've played "The Saint's Tomb"</h3>
You can continue with your character and equipment from that game, or make a new character (see below). At the end of "The Saint's Tomb" you can level up to Level 2. First, increase your maximum HP: Roll your class-specific hit die, add your CON modifier (minimum +1) and add the total to your maximum hit points. Second, you get another hit die to spend during short rests. Third, you get additional abilities and/or spell slots, depending on your class. See your class's entry in the rules for details. Assume that you have had the chance to spend a few days in the city before embarking on this quest. Your wounds are healed, abilities are reset, and you've had the chance to purchase any item from the non-magical equipment list plus basic healing potions and antidotes.
<h3>If you've played 5e before, but not "The Saint's Tomb</h3>
<hr color="red">
To play this game, you need a 2nd level character for 5e. You can create one using the free character creation feature at <a href="https://www.dndbeyond.com/" target="_blank">this website</a> or by using the 5e <a href="https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/" target="_blank">Basic Rulebook</a>. You will need to have this character sheet either printed out or open in a separate browser tab. Take the starting equipment listed in the rules or on the pre-generated character sheet You will keep track of your character's hit points, spells, and inventory on your character sheet.
The program will tell the story. Regular text will narrate the game. You will also see links to decisions in the game. //Italics indicate out-of-game instructions// These are instructions on what to dice to roll and what to change on your character sheet. Bold text indicates important people, objects, or instructions
In this game, you'll have to take on some of the role of the Game Master. If a monster or NPC has to make a saving throw against a spell you cast or ability you use, you will have to roll on their behalf.
In combat, all enemies will attack you each turn unless otherwise specified. Normally, to start combat, players and enemies would roll initiative to determine turn order in combat. For simplicity's sake, this game does not use initiative. Instead, the combatant who is the aggressor will usually go first.
You can cast spells, use abilities, or drink potions outside of combat at any time. So if you fall off a cliff, the game may narrate that you take damage, but if you have the //Feather Fall// spell prepared, you could cast it to negate the damage. If the spell calls for a saving throw or DC and none is listed, use 0 for the saving throw or 10 for the DC. So, if you're trying to use //Charm Person// on a shopkeeper, but their Wisdom modifier isn't listed, you can just make a d20 roll against your spellcasting DC.

They're valuable on their own, which is why Oremonger is so secretive about them. But if the miners and I can make some of these Bracers of Fire Resistance, we can get together money to buy shares in Obsidian Depths, enough to force Oremonger to make some reforms." She shrugs. "At least, that's the plan. Thanks, again. I'll meet you at the door to the lower mine."](if: $brigid is 3)[Brigid is tinkering with some scraps from the drillbot when you come in. Boss Oremonger was planning just to wall it up when he discovered that the rift would occasionally produce fire gems, which can be used in magical weapons and armor. He had me expand the rift, then build the mine cart tracks down here."
Frymock picks up one of the ceramic jars scattered around the rift and affixes a fuse. "I was happy to do it; keeping a few fire gems for myself could greatly help my own engineering research. But then, the attacks started. At first, it was just a few lava mephits, but larger fire elemental creatures have started threatening the rift and I'm afraid we may soon have a problem on our hands."
He attaches the jar to the wall of the cavern with a squirt of sticky glue from a nozzle on his glove. "That's why I'm blowing it all up."

Now, it is your turnWith a groan of creaking metal, the suit of armor falls to its knees, then crashes face-down as sparks shower from the joints. A stream of hydraulic fluid oozes from a severed tube.
You unbuckle the fasteners and pull an unconscious, but alive, Frymock from the wreckage of his armor. Blood drips from a cut lip and bruises cover his body.
As you drag the gnome away from the red crack in the cavern wall, you peer into the crack and think you see some movement on the other side. Make a Wisdom (Perception) check.
(link: "If your total is 12 or more, you're able to identify it.")[You see a lava worm moving through a landscape of liquid magma beneath a burning sky. This isn't just another part of the cavern. You turn from your work in time to see the explosion, which knocks loose several sections of the wall, collapsing the rift and closing it off from the cavern.] ]
Get back to the surface Shaking your head at the mystery of the fiery crack in the cavern wall, you load the unconscious body of Frymock into the mine cart. Your return to the surface via the mine cart is slower, but less dangerous, than the ride down.
<img src="Oremonger.jpg" width="200" align="right">
Boss Oremonger is waiting for you when you get back to the top of the minecart track. "I heard you crushed the Drillbot and came down to check on any damage to the mine. Looks like you took care of Frymock too, eh."
He pulls out a sack of coins from his jacket. "Here's your 50 gold, as promised." He peers suspiciously at you. "And another 10, just to keep this between the two of us."
You consider asking Oremonger about the glowing crevice in the wall of the cavern, but something in his last words makes you feel as if you shouldn't. Pocketing the gold, you start to make your way out of the mines and towards your next adventure.
*You have completed the mission that you were initially hired to do. Advance your character to Level 3.*
<H2>THE END</h2>"These jars contain enough explosive to collapse the cavern wall from this side, but to really seal the rift, I'll need to go through the rift and place some explosives there."
You look through the crack in the wall and see a landscape of flowing magma and black rock. Frymock follows your gaze. "It comes out on a cliff on the side of a volcano. I can plant the explosives at the base of the rift, but to get one at the top, I'll need to use this."
He pulls out a fist-sized metal ball with eight spindly legs sticking out from the sides. "One of my inventions: the mecha-spider! Once activated, it'll climb up a wall, then stop after a set number of feet. It can carry an explosive and fuse up the cliff to the top of the rift. That should be enough to collapse it."
"One problem, though. Elemental creatures on the other side will likely attack anything that comes through the rift. We need to give whatever's on the other side a bigger target until the mecha-spider can climb up the cliff face. It'll only take about a couple of minutes for it to get to the top, so we should be prepared to defend it."
//Before you fight, you can buff yourself and Frymock with any spells or abilities. You can adjust his HP and AC below. Let Frymock attackWhy do you stay in the fire plane? Is it greed? Curiosity? An aversion to the material plane? Or were you just too slow to realize the timing of the portal's collapse?
In any case, you're stuck here now. You look out across the fire-blasted landscape. Perhaps you'll find a way home. Perhaps you can find the legendary City of Brass. Perhaps you'll die of thirst and heat exhaustion.
You lift your belongings and set out, away from the flowing lava. Who knows what adventures await?
*You are, for the time being, trapped on the Elemental Plane of Fire. Advance your character to Level 3.*

You explain that Frymock was left on the other side of the rift when his explosives collapsed the cave wall. Oremonger looks more disappointed for the blockage of the rift than the loss of Frymock, but perks up when you mention that the blockage may not be permanent.
He pulls out a sack of coins from his jacket. He peers suspiciously at you. "Without the body, I can't pay you your full fee, but here's half: 25 gold, just to keep this between the two of us."
Pocketing the gold, you start to make your way out of the mines and towards your next adventure.
*You have completed the mission that you were initially hired to do. Advance your character to Level 3.*

Boss Oremonger is waiting for you when you get back to the top of the minecart track. "I heard you crushed the Drillbot and came down to check on any damage to the mine." Seeing Frymock, he narrows his eyes. "You came to give yourself up?"
Frymock stares down his employer. "No. I closed the rift, Oremonger. That thing was going to kill miners and eventually destroy the mine. I had to blow it up."
Oremonger reddens with anger. "YOU BLEW IT UP!?! KEEPING THAT RIFT OPEN WAS GOING TO MAKE ME RICH, AND YOU DETROYED IT TO SAVE SOME HILLBILLY MINERS? YOU'RE FIRED, FRYMOCK!!! YOU CAN'T DO THIS IN MY MINE!"
"It's not your mine; it's owned by the investors," Brigid says, standing in the doorway. She holds up one of the bracers she was working on earlier. "And by selling few of these Bracers of Fire Resistance, us 'hillbilly miners' can buy a controlling share of Obsidian Depths."
"What?" Oremonger fumes. "Were those made from stolen gems?"
"Stolen?" Brigid scoffs, "No, I just found these gems, and you can't prove otherwise. On the other hand, there are three witnesses who heard you say you wanted to let miners die so you could become rich. Quit your job, leave town, and I'll let it go."
Oremonger scowls at Brigid. "We'll see about this." He turns to you. "Are you just going to let them steal from me?"
**What would you like to do?**
Side with Oremonger
Side with Brigid and FrymockYou mention that you can attest to the fact that the gems in the bracers were stolen from the Obsidian Depths mine, and therefore the bracers cannot be legally sold.
Brigid and Frymock stare at you in disbelief. "I thought you were going to help us!" cries Brigid.
Oremonger chuckles. "Well, well, well. It looks like I'll be able to squeeze some last bits of profit from this mine before we close it down."
Oremonger hands you a clinking bag of coins as you walk with him out of the mine. "Here's your **50 gold**, as promised. I'll give you another 20 if you'll hang around for the next three days and help put down any trouble from the miners."
He smiles. "You did the right thing back there. The mine should be owned by someone who knows what they're doing, not this uneducated trash. C'mon, I'll want you in the office as part of my team of enforcers." He leads the way out of the mine.
*You have completed the mission that you were initially hired to do. Advance your character to Level 3.*
<H2>THE END</h2>You really can't say for sure where the gems came from.
Oremonger fumes, "You won't get away with this! I'll find a way to get this mine back, and you'll all regret it." He storms off.
When he has gone, Brigid turns to you. "Thanks," she says and extends her hand. "I know Oremonger promised you some money for this job. We can't pay you in coin, but now that I know we can make these bracers, I can give you one. It'll be worth far more than whatever Oremonger was going to pay."
Frymock nods. "We'll be able to sell them for much more if people see a hero like you wearing them. We can make others to raise the money to buy the mine, but it'll take a few days of hard work. You're under no obligation, but we'd appreciate it if you'd hang around to make sure that Oremonger doesn't interfere in the meantime."
Brigid smiles. "If he does try anything, he'll have to deal with the three of us. . . and maybe a drillbot, if I can get it working again."
