"That so?" asks your papa, turning away from the cast iron stove with a raised eyebrow and an amused quirk of the lips.
You nod your head, "She invited me yesterday and her parents are fine with it."
"And do you not need to ask permission?" your papa asks as he scoops the porridge into two laid-out bowls.
Your father picks up the bowls and sets one across from you before sitting down on the other side of the table, looking up and waiting for your answer.

"I think I'm old enough to make these choices myself, I'm in the double digits now," you respond, sitting up straighter to try and look more grown-up. Your papa had been the one to tell you that since you were older you could have a bit more freedom.
Your papa lets out a small chuckle, "Sadly, even with your great ancient wisdom, I am going to have to insist that you ask permission to go play with your friends."
You consider this for a second before deciding that you're going to have to ask, even though you're obviously old enough to decide these things on your own.
You sigh, "Can I play with Maya today?"
"Okay, you can go but you have to promise me you'll practice your magic tomorrow," says your papa.
You're one of the few who can do magic and your father seems to think you have quite the natural talent at it so he always encourages you to practice.

Your papa smiles at you, "You're right that you don't have anything to do today, but even so, you still need to ask for permission."

Your papa's brows raise at your tone, "If you want to go play with your friend, you're going to need to remember your manners."
You and your papa stare at one another for a moment until you look down, unable to win against his uncompromising stare.
"Can I play with Maya today please?" you ask quietly, while still looking down.

Offensive magic is a type of magic that allows you to control the four elements. This magic does not allow you to conjure elements, only control elements that are already there.
Choosing this magic will lock you into being an offensive magic user.

You've found that you have a natural affinity for offensive magic, though you still have a lot of work to do to become an expert. Your papa insists that he be near when you practice, most likely because of the time you almost burnt the house down while trying to move some fire from the cast iron stove into a lantern, so now you practice outside. You don't fully know why your papa is so insistent that you practice magic, but it seems to be important to him so you continue to do it.

After you promise to practice your magic tomorrow, you and your papa continue eating breakfast and he tells you that he might have to work late today. It's not unusual for your father to work late, especially now in the summer when there tends to be more to do at the farm where he works. You've heard your papa complain about his back<<if $magic is "healer">> and while you try to use your magic to soothe some of the pain, you're not skilled enough to truly help, <<else>> and you've offered massages but you don't think they're really that helpful, <</if>>you worry about your papa, but he always says he's ok.
A foot nudges your leg under the table, startling you, you look up and see your papa's worried gaze.
"Are you ok bug?"
You nod, realizing your thoughts had distracted you from whatever your papa was saying.
Your papa looks you over before deciding that you're fine, "Well as I was saying, I'm probably gonna be a little late getting home, but I still expect you to be home around dinner time, cause I don't want you playing outside by yourself so late."
"Yes, papa."
Breakfast is finished quickly after that and you take both your's and your papa's dish and put them in a bucket filled with water, you make a face, knowing that you're going to have to wash them later.
Suddenly you hear the familiar sound of loud thwacks on your front door that you recognize as Maya's enthusiastic knocking.

Upon hearing the thwacks on your front door, you immediately sprint to the front door, ignoring your papa who tells you to slow down, and swing the door open, excited to see your friend. Standing on your porch is Maya, who looks just as excited to see you, a large smile on her face and a gleam in her brown eyes.
She quickly pushes her loose and messy black hair out of her face before exclaiming, "There was a bird in my house this morning."
You're going to ask how the bird got into her house when you hear your papa walk up behind you and say, "Hello Maya, how are you this morning?"
"I'm real good, there was a bird in my house this morning."
"So I heard," says your father sounding amused, "I just wanted to ask and make sure that you're both planning on staying close to the village on your outing today."
"Oh yes sir, don't worry, we won't be going anywhere dangerous," Maya replies, putting her hand over her heart.
"Alright, well you two be safe," your father says as he places something wrapped in linen into your hands and kisses the top of your head before he heads out the door, turning right and going to the farm.
Maya watches him go before turning back to you, "You know yesterday, I saw a humongous blue frog down by the creek, so I was thinking that could be our first stop."
The quick change of subject doesn't phase you, as Maya often does this, jumping from one thing to the next as fast as her mouth can move.

"How big was the frog?" you ask excitedly as you lean forward.
Maya spreads her hands out at least ten inches apart, "This big."
"Woah," you say, eyes widening in amazement, "I've never seen a frog that big before."
"I know that's why we gotta go and see it," she says grabbing your wrist, pulling you behind her as you both run towards the creek.
The creek is located right on the edge of your village, a large forest sitting on the other side. You've never been into the forest, your papa always forbidding you from entering, saying you could get lost. It only takes a little over ten minutes to get to the creek, both you and Maya stand at the creek, slightly out of breath from running.
After taking a few moments to catch her breath Maya says, "Now, we've got a frog to find."
You both scour the creek, ending up walking up half the length of the creek and back before declaring your search a failure. Disappointed, you slump down onto the ground and bring your knees to your chest, resting your chin on your knees and looking at the creek. You sit in silence for a moment, listening only to the quiet sounds of the wilderness until you hear a loud ''//snap//'' of a branch followed by what sounds like a voice, though you can't be certain. You try to focus your hearing on the sound, to listen closer-
"You wanna show me some magic?" Maya asks, making you jump, you had been so focused on the sounds that you had forgotten she was here for a second.
You take one look back at the forest before brushing it off and look towards Maya. If Maya was at all previously upset at not being able to find the frog, it doesn't show now, her usual enthusiasm and bright smile there like normal. She's always had a fascination with your magic, consistently asking if she can watch as you practice. She leans forward as she waits for your answer.

Despite your fear, you allow her to pull you along, knowing that you're going to end up at that creek no matter what, and stopping now is just delaying the inevitable.

You don't look nearly as enthusiastically as Maya, not wanting to actually come across the giant frog. You tentatively follow Maya as she walks up half the length of the creek and back, pretending to search before Maya declares your search a failure. Relieved, you let out a breath as you slump down onto the ground and bring your knees to your chest, resting your chin on your knees and looking at the creek. You sit in silence for a moment, listening only to the quiet sounds of the wilderness until you hear a loud ''//snap//'' of a branch followed by what sounds like a voice, though you can't be certain. You attempt to focus your hearing on the sounds, to listen closer-
"Can you do some magic for me?" Maya asks, making you jump, you had been so focused on the sounds that you had forgotten she was here for a second.

"Frogs aren't blue, they're green or brown," you reply patronizingly, Maya is either confused or lying to you because //obviously// frogs don't come in that color.
Maya pauses, frowning, before quickly becoming exuberant once again, "Maybe it's a magical frog!"
"A magical frog?" you repeat skeptically.
"Yeah! That's why we gotta go and see it," she says as she eagerly grabs your wrist and starts pulling you behind her, seemingly unaware or uncaring about your skepticism, as she pulls you towards the creek. Despite your doubt about the frog, you allow her to pull you along, knowing that you're going to end up at that creek no matter what, and stopping to argue now is just delaying the inevitable.

"That sounds really neat," you respond politely, you're not really all that interested in the frog but you don't want to ruin Maya's fun.

You and Maya continue to play late into the afternoon, hopscotch, pretend, and any other game you both can think of, only taking one break as you eat the cheese and bread your papa wrapped for you. It's basically always been like this, you and Maya playing together. Maya is the only other child in your small village that is around your age, and while around once a week you both make the walk to a nearby town to get some basic schooling, you're both basically the other's only friend.
Maya looks up at the sky before telling you that you should both start heading home for dinner. Maya's house is farther than yours is from the creek, but you walk with her anyway, having a short conversation with her father before you head back to your house. As you head home you think about how there was someone at home waiting for Maya and you can't help but be slightly jealous. It's not that you don't love your papa and you know it's not fair to compare him to Maya's parents, seeing as there are two of them and just one of him, but you think it would be nice for both of you if you had another parent.
You sigh as you open your front door and walk inside, noticing the bucket that's still full of dishes, and figure that now is as good a time as any to start washing them. Luckily for you, the second bucket is already full of water so you won't have to go fetch any. You sit down and grab a dish from the first bucket, scrub it with lye soap, rinse it in the second, then dry it with a cloth. You'd normally heat some water in the kettle on the stove so you could rinse the dishes in hot water, but your papa doesn't allow you to use it by yourself.
"Hard at work, aren't you bug."
You startle, having been so lost in your task that you hadn't noticed that your papa had come home, you look up to see your papa smiling down fondly at you.

So excited that your papa is home, you quickly stand and run to hug your papa, completely forgetting about your wet soapy hands. Your papa laughs as he hugs you back.
"Why don't you go ahead and finish the dishwashing, while I start dinner?" your papa asks.
You let out a groan at the thought of returning to the dishes, but your papa just smiles at you as he lets you go, sending you back to the dishes. You only had a few dishes left anyway, so it doesn't take you long to finish the last few, your papa setting dinner on the table not long after that. Sitting down at the table, you pick up your sandwich as you bite into it you're pleasantly surprised to find meat inside. Looking up, surprised, at your papa he gives you a wink before biting into his own sandwich.
Dinner is mostly uneventful, your papa asking about your day and Maya, and you talk about searching for the frog and playing games<<if $youngcrush is true>>, your papa giving you a small smile as you spend so much time talking about Maya.<<else>>.<</if>> You're almost finished with dinner when your papa clears his throat,

"We're moving to the city?" you ask, confused.
A flash of sadness washes over your papa's face before it's quickly replaced by a strained smile, "No bug, I'd be making the first trip up with you, but you'd be living at the school and I'd be living here."

Happy that your papa is home, you dry your hands off on the towel you were using to dry dishes before rushing over to your papa and giving him a hug. Your papa chuckles and thanks you for drying your hands as he hugs you back.

//''BANG''//
You're woken up suddenly by a loud noise coming from your kitchen, you think it might just be papa making breakfast but when you look outside you see it's still pitch black. Getting slowly up out of bed, you walk the short distance to one of your curtains quietly before peeking your head out. You see three large figures, one of which holds a lantern, standing at your front entrance, the door knocked off its hinges. You don't know if you've made some sort of sound, but you figure you must have as the figures turn towards you. You feel large hands on your shoulders, and you almost scream until you realize it is just your papa. He pulls you behind him, placing himself between you and the figures.
"What do you want?" your papa demands, though his voice shakes.
The figures offer no answer as they rush forward, pulling weapons. Your papa attempts to protect you, but an unarmed, untrained man is no match against three swords, not even when he's protecting something as precious as his child. Still standing behind him, you're not able to see what's going on clearly, only hear the sound your papa makes as a sword slashes across his front. While he still attempts to stand in front of you, his wound makes it easy for the figures to push him to the side to get to you.
<<if $magicability is "offensive">>You look at the lantern and see the fire within. You hold out your hands, palms out, as you feel the fire rage at being contained and you promise it a way out. Moving your hands you direct the fire out of the lantern and at the figure you saw slash your papa. The fire moves quickly, hitting the figure straight in the chest, but instead of the fire spreading you watch as they bring up one of their gloved hands and easily pat out the fire. One of the figures grabs you and starts pulling you towards the door, you attempt to fight back, trying to make it back to where you see your papa lying down, wounded, and feebly reaching towards you. The last thing you see before you're yanked away is one of the figures holding a sword to your papa's neck before stabbing down into it. You barely get the beginnings of a scream out before a large gloved hand is covering your mouth, smothering your cries.
<<elseif $magicability is "defensive">>You look down at your papa, seeing him bleeding and wounded, and throw yourself to your knees in front of him. Moving your hands in front of you, palms out, you imagine a shield that will protect both you and your papa. The light blue shield forms a dome of safety around you, but it doesn't last long as the figures begin smashing against it. You're not strong enough to keep repairing the shield in the places where it's been broken and soon your shield falls completely. One of the figures grabs you and starts pulling you towards the door, you attempt to fight back, trying to make it back to your papa who is feebly reaching towards you. Moving your hands to his stomach, over the wound you try to hurry along the body, and force it to heal. You can feel the tissue begin to put itself back together when one of the figures grabs you breaking your contact. <<else>>You look at the figures coming towards you and reach out your magic to try to calm them, hoping that will cease their attack, or at least provide enough time for you and your papa to escape. You feel the figure's euphoric excitement and you attempt to dampen it, but this only causes the figures to pause for less than a second before continuing on towards you. The hand stays over your mouth as you're carried away from your home, the three walking silently. You don't know how long you've been moving, your mind too distracted to keep track of trivial things like time, but you know it can't have been that long when you cross over the creek you had played in just earlier today. The figures carry on into the forest, walking confidently, seemingly in no danger of getting lost. They continue until they stop at an area that has an absence of trees, and you see two more figures. Whoever these people are they've clearly been sleeping here, as there are two tents set up along with some lanterns and other items you don't recognize.
The person that is holding you raises you up, shaking you slightly, almost showing you off to their comrades like a particularly good catch. As they have been completely silent thus far, you're surprised when you hear laughter in response.
"Don't waste time, restrain it," you hear one of the original three say.
You hear some grumbling, but the one holding you does as instructed, gagging you before tying your hands behind your back and your feet together. They seem unconcerned about you escaping as they leave you lying on the ground while they move about. With the fairly well-lit space, this is the first time you are able to see them clearly. Some part of you expected that when you finally saw what they looked like it would be monstrous, but they all look completely mundane, you don't know if that comforts you or not.
The five of them continue with their work, two of them pouring some sort of dust onto the ground, while the other three are moving something out of a bag, you realize that if you want to get out of whatever this is you need to do something now.

Your captors seem to be ignoring you as they prepare for whatever they have planned for you, staying as quiet as you can you attempt to untie yourself. Luckily your hands don't seem to have been tied too tightly, unluckily you don't have any knowledge on how to untie your hands when they're behind your back. You try to move your fingers towards where you think the knot is, but you're shaking so much that you're unable to get any sort of hold on it. You try to wiggle your way out of the bonds, try to just remove one hand at a time, but nothing works as you desperately try to free yourself.
"Aww, look it's trying to leave," says one of your captors condescendingly while they move towards you, grabbing you by your arms and throwing you down.
Looking around yourself you see that on the ground is a light purple circle, that is softly glowing. Your captors surround the circle, pulling weapons, you look around frantically and realize that you have no chance of escape.

You're unable to force yourself to do anything as you sob, these people are going to kill you, just like they killed your papa and you're completely powerless to do anything.
You look up as you hear loud laughter and see your captors, obviously taking joy in your fear. One of them moves towards you, as you cower, grabbing you by your arms and throwing you down onto the ground. You've closed your eyes, as you wait for the first strike when you hear a shout of surprise. You open your eyes and see the person in front of you has been run through the stomach with a lance. Everyone seems completely frozen in shock as the sword is pulled back towards its wielder, the person who was stabbed falling back, revealing an average-sized man with a relaxed grin on his face.
"Well," says the man pleasantly as he looks around at the others, "are we going to fight?"
This seems to break the remaining four out of their stupor as they turn their weapons on the strange man. The man doesn't even seem to break a sweat as he fights four other people, easily moving out the way of any blows, cutting down another person effortlessly. You watch as the man ducks and moves backward out the way of one blow, causing the person in front of him to walk directly into it. He takes advantage of the other person's surprise at hitting their comrade, quickly stabbing into them, causing them to fall. After seeing all their comrades killed, the final person turns the other way and takes off running, only to trip over a tree branch and fall, giving the man the opportunity to stab down into them, before he turns and looks at you.

The man begins moving towards you and you instinctually try to move back in fear, but you fall onto your back, having momentarily forgotten the ropes that bind you. You roll onto your side, watching the man with wide eyes. He puts his hands up, slowing his approach, giving you a gentle smile when he crouches before you. His hands move towards your head and you jerk your body onto your other side, trying to avoid his grasp. You let out a small muffled cry when you feel a touch on the back of your head.
"It's ok, I'm not going to hurt you," says the man soothingly, "I'm just undoing the gag."
The man gently unties the knot at the back of your head before pulling the cloth out of your mouth.
"Now I'm going to undo your hands alright?" He doesn't wait for an answer as his hands deftly free yours.
With your now free hands, you slowly sit yourself up, wincing, and turn to look at the man who is now undoing the knots at your feet.
"Who are you?" you ask, voice strained from all the crying and yelling you've done tonight.
The man is quiet for a second, "Felix, you may call me Felix."
He finishes untying your feet before he stands up, offering you a hand, which you hesitantly take and he pulls you to your feet.
"Well," Felix says as he puts his hands on his hips, "Do you know which way your house is, I can walk you home."
At his words, you feel tears begin to gather in your eyes as you remember that your papa is dead and you no longer have a home to go back to.
<<if $stoic gte 55>>You try to hold back the tears as you shake your head, "They kil-killed my papa."<<else>>You let the tears fall freely as you shake your head, "They kil-killed my p-papa."<</if>>
"I'm," the man starts before spotting something on the ground, "oh."
You don't know what the man sees, your vision too blurry from your tears, but you do see a quick flash of, what you think is, alarm cross his face.
"How about this, you could come live with me, be my ward or something and I could even help train your magic," he says, his speech slightly hurried.
You don't know how he knows about your magic, and you don't know if you should trust him, but

The man starts moving towards you and you glare while attempting to snarl at the man, hoping that he'll leave you alone. The man's approach slows but doesn't stop as he puts his hands up, giving you a gentle smile when he crouches before you. The man's hands move towards your face and <<if $impulsive gte 65>>you throw your body at him, effectively knocking him over as you catch him off guard. The man lets out a grunt before rolling you off of him and onto your back. "I respect your spirit," says the man with a smile, "but I promise I'm not trying to hurt you, just undo your gag."
You and the man stay still, watching each other for a minute until you roll back onto your side, giving him access to the knot on your gag. He gently undoes the gag before pulling the cloth out of your mouth.
"Now I'm going to undo your hands alright?" He doesn't wait for an answer as his hands deftly free yours.
With your hands now free, you slowly sit yourself up, wincing, before looking at the man who is now undoing the knots at your feet.
"Who are you?" you demand, voice strained from all the screaming and crying you've done tonight.
The man is quiet for a second, "Felix, you may call me Felix."
He finishes untying your feet before he stands up, offering you a hand, which you reluctantly take and he pulls you to your feet.
"Well," Felix says as he puts his hands on his hips, "Do you know which way your house is, I can walk you home."

The man starts moving towards you and you stay completely still, partly out of fear and partly out of curiosity. He gives you a gentle smile as he approaches before he crouches down before you. The man's hands move towards your face and you shut your eyes tightly, preparing yourself for whatever's next. You feel the man's touch on the back of your head and you open your eyes in surprise when you feel your gag untied and the cloth pulled out of your mouth.

The man starts moving towards you and you let your body fall down on the ground, knowing you can't do anything to stop what's going to happen, so you might as well give in. You're surprised when the man unties the knot on the gag before pulling the cloth out of your mouth.
The man's eyes meet yours, "Now I'm going to undo your hands alright?"

With your papa dead you truly have nowhere else to go and besides, if this man wanted to harm you, surely he would've done so already.
You look up at the man and nod, accepting his offer.
He looks slightly surprised by your easy agreement before starting to walk while saying, "Well best start on our way now then, sorry we don't have time to go and get your stuff, but you can pick some things out once we get home."
You're unsure how to feel about not getting to grab any of your old things, but whatever the man saw has made him anxious to leave and you're not keen on running into whatever scares this man. So you walk silently beside him, completely clueless about what your future looks like.
