The family had but one child. An heir that, though surrounded by possessions, felt stifled and alone. For the heir was directed to follow the carefully charted path of their mother, and every previous head of the family. But the young heir dreamed of doing more with their life. They went to the matriarch with the hope of swaying them both from the path, with the hope that the matriarch would listen. The matriarch refused both, citing tradition, and the heir despaired. As the heir grew, they worried that they would never escape. Never be able to find their own path. One day, the heir met a knight and was promised a life no longer under the matriarch’s rule. The heir was charmed by the knight and accepted the promise without question. A year passed and the matriarch approved of the pair's betrothal. However, as the ceremony was planned, the heir began to see that the knight’s promise was not true. Rather than freedom, the heir was to be confined in yet another gilded cage. The heir had unwittingly trapped themself between two rigid systems of rule. Neither any better or worse than the other. On the night of the wedding, the heir asked for a moment of privacy. In this instant of quiet, laced with panic to the point of suffocation, they decided to act. They packed a single bag... and fled. The family, traditions, and betrothed were all left behind. --- [[✦ And a new path appeared at the heir’s feet. -> Arrive at Hotel]] </div></div><div class="outer"><div class="inner">As I step into the hotel, I feel the air conditioning give me a quick blast, as though trying to blow the late spring heat off me. It is a local business, not a chain, called Jody’s Motel in the small town of Haven. It’s just what I need. The lobby is minimally decorated with a desk, a few chairs, a couch, and a large photo of a landscape that I passed by on the way here. Behind the desk is a person with freckles dotting their tan skin, dressed in a high collared dress shirt with a light cardigan. Clipped to their chest is a name tag that reads ‘Ramilah she/her.’ I step up to the desk, my only bag heavy on my shoulder. “Hi, uh, checking in?” The person at the desk seems to jolt and look up from where their attention was focused on the computer in front of them. I hesitate, wondering if I can ask anymore questions without them snapping at me, and Val starts muttering something from the book. They’re staring at the mirror so I look over and watch as my reflection ripples. I see my reflection standing in the foyer of my parents house in my wedding dress/suit.
