Only your nose and eyes aren't covered by furs and blankets. As you wake up, you imagine you can see your breath in the cold, damp morning, but you're probably exaggerating. The others are already up. You can make out the crackle of the fire being kindled. You stare at the wall and try not to move so they won't know you're awake. Soon you'll have to anyway, this amount of blankets is only comfortable during the night. You sigh involuntarily.
Immediately, there's the weight of an arm resting on your swaddled hip, and your foster brother Tíðkumi leans over you.
"[[Virun]]," he says, "are you asleep?"
"[[Igulbjörn]]," he says, "are you asleep?"

The thought of getting up makes you numb in a way that has nothing to do with the cold. You manage to shuffle around a bit.
"I may be awake, but I'm not alive," you try to joke.
"Great line. Remember that one for when some hero comes knocking on your burial mound. Come on, we need the seats."
You struggle out of your blankets and clear your sleeping space. The other members of the household are already helping themselves to oatmeal and dried fish, and soon someone is sitting where you were just lying.
You shouldn't have mentioned death and burials. It just makes it clear whose place is now empty.

You set up your own area at the assembly. Together with (if: $negative > $positive)[a wary] (if: $negative < $positive)[a cheery] Tiðkumi, you eventually make your way over to the artisans, where the rune carvers have gathered. There are quite a few this year.

You wrap yourself in a cloak and go outside to pee. Really, you shouldn't be this weak. In many ways, you're the head of the household, they look to you for advice and decisions. And it's not like you haven't seen death before, at all ages, for many reasons.

(set: $death to 'Ingvar') You heard that Svæinn from the farm down by the stony part of the river had come home. Alone, barely recognisable. Almost no hair, sunken cheeks, without use of one hand. They had been so strong, the men that Ingvarr recruited for his glorious raiding and looting trip to the east. And they had seen this strength in each other and laughed. In their minds, they were already wearing the looted gold and traded furs.
$deceasedname had, in his quiet way, wanted this with a passion. You could tell. No one had been as taken by the treasures brought home from Miklagarðr as him, and there was fame to be had for him and your family. You approach Öpir, making him interrupt his conversation. He quickly straightens up and gives you a winning smile.
"How can I help you? You look like you might be interested in some of the finest carving in all of the Upplands. You've probably seen my work."
"I have!" says Tiðkumi. "It's wonderful. And very recognisable as your style."
Öpir gives him a look of pride. "Good eye! And taste, of course."
(if: $negative < $positive)[Öpir may be full of himself, but your foster brother does have good taste.] (if: $negative > $positive)[This man is ridiculous.] "What //is// your style, then?" you ask.
"Well-made, perfectly balanced loops!" Öpir draws some in the air in front of you. "Intertwined, interlocked, braided following all the rules. Two loops, three, depending on the stone." With a wink at Tiðkumi, he adds, "I've even done five."
You ask him about the price. It depends on the size, he says, and on whether you have some good stone material - otherwise he knows some of the best stonecutters in the area, simply the best. "And then room and board for me and any apprentices while I'm working, of course."
You don't think you can stand having this man staying with you for any amount of time. [[You thank him for his time and return for another look at the carvers. ->Runristare]]

You go up to Lifstæinn, who doesn't react to your approaching.
"That's a nice beast there," you say to get his attention. He looks up in surprise.
"Isn't it? Other people prefer snakes and dragons, but I don't know, I kind of like doing them with four legs. Gives it... a better balance somehow." Lifstæinn waves his hands vaguely, making Tiðkumi dodge the stick he's still holding. "Oh, I'm so sorry!" he laughs nervously and drops the stick.
"Don't worry about it," Tiðkumi replies kindly. "I love your designs, how they manage to be both calm and powerful at the same time." Does your foster brother know all the carvers' styles? You didn't know he had this interest. (if: $negative < $positive)[You like how he lights up when talking about it.] (if: $negative > $positive)[You hope he isn't getting any ideas.]
"Yes! That's exactly what I'm going for!" Lifstæinn says excitedly before remembering himself. "Are you here for a commission? I'd be happy to do one."
You discuss the price, which is relatively high but not unreasonable. Room and board for Lifstæinn and any apprentices has to be part of the deal, though he says he's not really working with any apprentice at the moment.
Thinking about it, you don't trust him to do this properly, not at that price, and Tiðkumi is a bit too excited about him. [[You thank him for his time and return for another look at the carvers. ->Runristare]]

Grimr looks surprised to be approached. "$name, isn't it? From down at Arnsta?"
"That's right. I hear you do runestones now? I was thinking of commissioning one."
Grimr's surprise heightens, then clears. "Oh. Oh! Yes, of course. Sorry about your $deceased." You nod. "Yeah, I do runestones. I keep the designs really simple: big cross in the middle, turns into the band with the runes. No snakes or anything."
"Do you add poems?" asks Tiðkumi. "I mean..."
"No, no poems. You don't put poetry in writing, it kills it. Like a dead pond. A frozen frog."
"Really?" Tiðkumi insists. "I've seen it done."
"Yeah, well, no. Not from me."
Asked about the price, Grimr tells you it's quite low. Since he's local, he doesn't need to stay at your farm much either.
His style sounds too simple for you. [[You thank him for his time and return for another look at the carvers. ->Runristare]]

Ásmundr watches you approaching without moving. He just looks at you until you introduce yourself and Tiðkumi.
"Interested in hiring me?" When you say that you are, he calmly and professionally outlines the costs. He is pretty expensive, and he prefers to decide his own stone material. He also tells you that he often works with apprentices, who will need food and board as well.
"So what's your style? I mean, what do you specialise in?" you ask, getting the feeling that Tiðkumi already knows.
Ásmundr considers the question. "Depends on the stone. Depends on what works for you. Pretty simple stuff, really. Cross, snake, nice and clean." He gets a glint in his eye. "Although... You wouldn't happen to like animals?"
"Animals?"
"Dogs, bears, otters. I kind of like carving those, if there's room." A surprisingly sweet smile crosses his face.
(if: $negative < $positive)[That does sound interesting. Could be a unique feature.](else-if: $negative > $positive)[Animals? Otters? What a weird man.]

Runfriðr is mainly selling her yarn and textiles and sits surrounded by colours, embroidering something. You can't stop yourself from reaching out and touching some of the yarn hanging by her side. She doesn't look up at first, but when she does, it's with a shake of the head and a couple of heavy blinks.
"Sorry, didn't see you coming there. Nice, isn't it? My sister dyes it."
This close, you find yourself even more captured by the examples of her work Runfriðr has displayed. Many of them depict events in stories you have known all your life, arranged in a way that makes the story play through your mind. Now you're the one who needs to shake your head and get back to reality.
"We hear you make runestones?"
Runfriðr frowns. "Well, erh, yes and no. I don't make them as much as design them, really. You'd have to find someone to do the actual carving." Her eyes drift to her embroidery. She almost picks up the needle before remembering herself. "Yes. Anyway, I don't do your everyday snake-snake-cross thing."
"What about something like that?" Tiðkumi asks, nodding at an image of Sigurðr frying the sliced heart. You look at him in surprise. $deceasedname loved Sigurðr stories. None of the other carvers seem particularly interested in talking to Hástæinn and he looks at them with nothing but derision. As soon as you get close enough to catch his attention, he gestures towards them. "Frauds and snobs." Tiðkumi is immediately put off. "Oh, really?"
"Yes, really." Hástæinn is not that easily deterred. "They band together, make sure the price stays high, not open to new ideas or people who see through their tricks."
"And you have, of course?" People who don't know Tiðkumi wouldn't recognise how uncommon the coldness in his voice is. (if: $negative < $positive)[You're starting to feel the same annoyance, and your temper is much more obvious than your foster brother's.](if: $negative > $positive)[You're mainly amused, both by your foster brother and by the bragging.] It goes straight past Hástæinn.
"It takes some brains of course. I've taught myself to write runes, it's not as //mysterious// as they make out," he adds mockingly. "Want a runestone? I'll make you one in half the time of any of the band of brothers over there. And at a fraction of the price. Any style you want."
You're going to go with Tiðkumi on this one. [[You decline the offer, thank him for his time and go back to have a second look at the other carvers. ->Runristare]]

You expected him to be a grumpy old man, but he is actually friendly, if a bit tired. You can tell he's had this conversation many times before.

You go back inside, trying to shake off the thoughts and memories perched on your shoulders. Tiðkumi hands you a bowl of oatmeal and is obviously concerned, though he hides it well. He has his own place these days, of course, but he and his family always stay at your farm before the assembly.
Some of you discuss what needs to be done before you set off. You made some good trades last year, and all your horses made it through the winter. You expect to do well at the assembly market this time as well.
As you and Tiðkumi go to see to the horses, you look at your lands. The hillside really is beautiful, more so than it has seemed to you in a while. Why would anyone ever leave this place?
"We made something out of this," you say, half to yourself. Tiðkumi turns to look at you, pleasantly surprised. After a while, he says, "You know what you should do? You should have a runestone made for $deceasedname."

(set: $negative to 1)(set: $positive to -1)"Why would I want to do that?" you ask Tiðkumi. "They're expensive and more or less pointless. Pay to have a painted rock standing around? Really? Everyone knows $deceasedname died."
Tiðkumi rolls his eyes.
"You are so out of touch. They're not pointless at all! Think about it. It's not just about announcing a death. How do you know Guðmundr Ofæigsson and his family converted? How do you know exactly where Vígmundr's and Áfríðr's lands begin? Or why Gæirlaug ended up inheriting everything after she lost all her children?"
"People told me!" You wave your hand for emphasis. "I don't need to stand and break my neck at a carving to find that out."
"But people are moving around much more. Not everyone who settles down here knows all our histories, it's not like it used to be." He's frustrated, and you may have taken a harder stance against his idea than you intended. "And they're gorgeous! Put it by the main road, it'll impress everyone. Show them how well you're doing."
You tell him you'll think about it.
"$deceasedname would have loved it," is the last thing Tiðkumi says on the matter before you go about your work. You make a noncommital noise.

(set: $positive to 1)(set: $negative to -1)You stop walking. Why didn't you think of this yourself?
"Of course! That's a great idea!"
Tiðkumi looks very pleased with himself.
"Isn't it? A memorial to your $deceased and a testimony to your family's faith and success."
You've seen other families' runestones along the roads and marking the boundaries of their farms. Guðmundr Ofæigsson and his brothers had one made for their father when they converted, and there was of course Gæirlaug who needed to lay out that inheritance business after she had the terrible misfortunes. You've always admired Vígmundr's and Áfríðr's stone, even though it is a bit loud.
"We should be able to afford it," you say. You like this idea. You continue to the horses with your spirits lifted.

A couple of days later, your goods are all packed and you and your family leave for the assembly. It's the first main assembly of the year. Trades will be made, lawsuits will be settled, news will get spread, marriages arranged.
It's not that long a trip from your farm, but it takes most of the day. Your younger sister Vigerðr, Tiðkumi's wife, starts singing one of her favourite hero stories to pass the time. The rest of the party joins in the refrain. In the back of your head, you hear echoes of $deceasedname's voice chiming in, like it did last time you rode here.
Once you arrive at the assembly place, Tiðkumi (if: $negative is 1)[carefully mentions] (else-if: $positive is 1)[enthusiastically points out] that there are several rune carvers gathered where the artisans are setting up.

Look at Öpir. (click: "Öpir")[He's easy to spot in his garish clothes, but you already know who he is from his reputation. He lounges against a wall, smiling smugly at a woman who's discussing something with him. (if: $negative < $positive)[What a handsome man.] (if: $negative > $positive)[He already annoys you.]]
Look at Lifstæinn. (click: "Lifstæinn")[He gives off an air of a mild-mannered dreamer. He seems lost in pleasant thought, sketching an animal on the ground. (if: $negative < $positive)[You like the look of him and his work.] (if: $negative > $positive)[It's a wonder he finishes anything.]]
Look at Grimr Skald. (click: "Grimr Skald")[You only know him because he's local. He has earned his nickname for his poetry, which has moments of brilliance at the expense of technical skill. Grimr's knowledge of writing has lead him to take up runestone carving as well, although his poetry is better. (if: $negative < $positive)[Maybe you should support a local artist?] (if: $negative > $positive)[At least he's probably cheap.]]
Look at Ásmundr. (click: "Ásmundr")[A rough, muscular man originally from the north. They say he's much gentler than he looks. He occasionally glances sideways at Öpir. (if: $negative < $positive)[There's something about him that makes you feel comfortable.] (if: $negative > $positive)[He seems slow. You're not impressed.]]
Look at Balli the Red. (click: "Balli the Red")[The hair that gave him his name has been white for years now. Balli belongs to an older generation of carvers; his style is old-fashioned but respected. (if: $negative < $positive)[Experience could be the way to go.] (if: $negative > $positive)[If you're going to spend money on this, maybe you should go with someone more current?]]
Look at Runfriðr. (click: "Runfriðr")[She has made her name through her stunning work in embroidery and weaving, but can agree to design an inscription if the subject matter and price appeals to her. She seems to pour all her focus into her work, making her easily distracted when not doing art. (if: $negative < $positive)[Her designs really are gorgeous and exciting.] (if: $negative > $positive)[Is it worth the price though?]]
Look at Vighjálmr. (click: "Vighjálmr")[He's a young apprentice, eager to prove himself as a carver in his own right. He's unsuccesfully trying to get Livstæinn's attention. (if: $negative < $positive)[His excitement is very appealing. You might want to support his career.] (if: $negative > $positive)[Young people today, really. Shying away from honest work.]]
Look at Hástæinn. (click: "Hástæinn")[You mainly notice him because he's loudly informing someone how easy carving a runestone is, he taught himself, no problem. The other person mentions the amount of work it takes, but is interrupted. "Well actually, if it takes more than a week, you're doing something wrong." (if: $negative < $positive)[He already annoys you.] (if: $negative > $positive)[Hm. You could get this out of the way quickly.]]
You decide upon:

As spring starts turning to summer, $carver arrives at your farm.
(if: $carver is 'Öpir')[It's not just those brightly coloured clothes that makes everyone take notice. It's his entire demeanour, the way he walks like he owns the road. He's brought a small, devoted group of apprentices. Some of them try to emulate his style, looking disdainfully at your neighbours, while others just look elated with being at his side. (if: $negative<$positive)[Well, he knows his craft. You're sure he has reason for his pride.] (if: $negative>$positive)[You sigh to yourself. You know this kind of man.]](if: $carver is 'Lifstæinn')[He's travelling alone, explaining that his last apprentice "went off to do his own thing, bless him". Lifstæinn is as calm and slow as he was at the assembly, which (if: $negative<$positive)[is a refreshing change of pace in your busy life](if: $negative>$positive)[worries you, given what you're paying him]. Tiðkumi is excited to see Lifstæinn again, and seems to feel at home with him.](if: $carver is 'Grimr Skald')[This is just a first visit. Grimr lives on a farm not far away; some friends of his agreed to take him in a couple of years ago if you remember correctly. He's friendly and chatty, easily fitting in with your people. Many of them are his people as well, as it turns out. (if: $negative<$positive)[It's nice to have a local man for the job. He takes care of himself](if: $negative>$positive)[No one seems to recognise him as a rune carver, though. It does give you pause.]](if: $carver is 'Ásmundr')[A couple of apprentices accompany him, and stay back while Ásmundr greets you and your family. You think he may be scanning the landscape for a good spot already, although he may just be taking in his surroundings. He is clearly used to this, calmly finding his temporary place in your household. One of your farmhands takes to Ásmundr immediately and offers to show him around. (if: $negative<$positive)[You're happy with your choice. $deceased's memory is in competent hands.](if: $negative>$positive)[Should he be larking about with members of your household?]](if: $carver is 'Balli')[As agreed, you have cleared the best sleeping spot for him and made sure your stockpile of food is replenished. Balli seems well pleased with your preparations. There's a certain respect due for someone who has both grown old and can hold his own. Balli generally keeps to himself, preserving his energy for the work he is here to do. (if: $negative<$positive)[There's a strength in him, but also a sadness. You find yourself wondering how many lives he's seen end as his own one continued.] (if:$negative>$positive)[As long as he actually does the work in the end. You've seen too many grumpy old men lie all day by the fire, getting all poetic about how terrible their old bodies are.]](if: $carver is 'Runfriðr')[You have arranged for a couple of local stone cutters to do the actual stone work, and they have located a promising piece ready for inspection by $carver. $carver herself has brought along her sister Gislaug, a handsome woman who walks with a stick and keeps her sister in order. The impression you got of $carver at the assembly as easily distracted when she isn't working still appears accurate. (if:$negative<$positive)[You find yourself a bit taken with both the sisters as well as their art.] (if:$negative>$positive)[You can only hope the stern looks $carver gets from her sister are enough.]](if:$carver is 'Vighjálmr')[The young man shows up a day or so earlier than you were expecting, his tools packed in the most visible place possible. He introduces himself to anyone who happens to catch his eye as "the runecarver". Underneath all his blustering enthusiasm, you sense the uneasiness of someone being in charge for the first time. Not unlike preparing to go to battle, or to Rome, you think. (if:$negative<$positive)[It's almost endearing, which you decide never to show $carver.] (if:$negative>$positive)[Oh dear. Overconfidence and nerves, this is going to be interesting.]](if:$carver is 'Hástæinn')[You had been expecting him several days sooner than this, but he vaguely explains that he was delayed by something that couldn't wait. Upon arrival, $carver points to a large, uneven stone which has been there as long as you can remember. "Now, other carvers wouldn't realise this, but that right there? Perfect runestone material. Settled." He spends most of the day talking about his various skills, one of which appears to be a very good memory for lewd poems. Tiðkumi glowers at him, and sometimes at you. (if:$negative<$positive)[You give him apologetic looks back. This may have been a terrible mistake.](if:$negative>$positive)[You don't care. This is saving you money, surely he knows what he's doing.]]
The next day, as the inhabitants of the farm start going about their tasks, $carver comes up to you. "When you have the time, I'd like to got through what the inscription should say."
[["Now is fine, sure."->Lovord]]
Pleased to have settled the question of the carver, you go about the rest of your business at the assembly. (if: $carver is 'Hástæinn')[Tiðkumi is not as happy with your choice as you are.
"That man has no idea what he's doing. You're wasting your money."](else-if: $negative<$positive)[Tiðkumi is excited about having $carver coming to stay at your farm for a while, and hints at wanting to do the same for the duration of the work.](else-if: $negative>$positive)[Tiðkumi is carefully optimistic about the work you agreed to commission, but tries to hide his excitement.]
In time, you travel home. [[The spring passes->Ristarens ankomst]].
(set: $stoneColour to (either: 'red', 'grey', 'light', 'dark'))(set: $stoneType to (either: 'granite', 'sandstone'))The stone is a nice block of the local $stoneColour $stoneType. (if: $carver is 'Hástæinn')[It looks pretty rough. One side is flatter than the others; $carver assures you this a great carving surface. You're not completely convinced, but you assue $carver knows what he's doing.](unless: $carver is 'Hástæinn')[One side has been worked and polished to a smooth surface. You run your hand along it, the work is quite impressive. $carver smiles. "It's nice, isn't it? The boys did a good job. Of course, they started out with a good natural surface."
"It really is. I've never thought about it before."]
$carver has had the stone placed face up close to the spot you agreed upon. Using chalk and a variety of strings and odd-shaped pieces of wood, (unless: $carver is 'Runfriðr')[he](if: $carver is 'Runfriðr')[she] starts sketching a design. You stay and watch the work for a while. (if: $carver is 'Öpir')[In order to make his famous loops, $carver starts with sketching the circles the runes will snake around. He works efficiently; he's done this many times before. Satisfied that work on the stone is progressing, you leave to take care of your own duties.](if: $carver is 'Lifstæinn')[$carver has marked out space for the runic band and, humming to himself, makes some first attempts at planning the four-legged animal he wants in the middle. Tiðkumi can't help asking about Lifstæinn's process and ends up helping out most of the day. You leave them to it.](if: $carver is 'Ásmundr')[$carver plans his design methodically, although he concentrates more on the ornamentation than on the length of the runic band. One of your farm hands, Gunnarr, is helping him with whatever heavy lifting he needs. As you take your leave, they're comparing hand sizes.](if: $carver is 'Runfriðr')[Just like at the assembly, $carver loses all traces of her confused manner when she starts working. She is completely engrossed in planning a complex array of figures that tell the story she wants. Her sister Gislaug leans her head towards yours and explains $carver's plan in a low voice so as not to disturb her concentration. Gislaug smells, not unpleasantly, of wool and various plant dyes. You reluctantly realise that you have duties of your own and take your leave.](if: $carver is 'Balli')[It's a simple design, but one $carver has executed many times before. You can still tell that his age is weighing on him and that his back and knees used to be able to take more than they do now. He has help from some of your farm hands, which means there is more work for you to do, so you leave $carver to his.](if: $carver is 'Vighjálmr')[$carver is visibly uncomfortable with you standing around. He doesn't seem to be able to start. You decide to give him a break and go about your own business.](if: $carver is 'Grimr Skald')[Singing as he works, $carver quickly and not very carefully sketches the one design he always does: a big cross that connects to the runic band, which forms a circle around the cross. You notice, however, that some of his improvised verse seems to be about $deceased, and you give him a smile as you leave to do your own work for the day.](if: $carver is 'Hástæinn')[With gusto, $carver draws his lines, in a way that looks slightly sloppy to you. Tiðkumi says something to that effect and gets a derisive look. "Actually, I think you'll find that this is how the pros do it. Now step back." You take your leave, Tiðkumi grumbling.]
The day passes. Over the evening meal $carver informs you that the preliminary carving has been finished, and the deep carving will begin [[tomorrow. ->Ristande 2]]
The weather has stayed dry and sunny. Your household and some of your neighbours have gathered round the finished runestone, where some of the stronger farm hands, including Tiðkumi and Arnvi (who milks the goats and is stronger than most men on the farm), are preparing to erect the stone. You have also decided to pitch in, more because it feels right than because of your strength. A hole has been dug by its foot, a good third of the stone left unadorned to serve as the root of the monument. (if: $carver is 'Hástæinn')[At least, that was the plan. $carver has misjudged slightly, leaving more like a fourth of the stone as the root.] On $carver's signal, you all start lifting the poles underneath the stone, heaving it upright and into the hole. It's hard work, and when you finally feel the runestone slide into place, a cheer rises from the crowd. You cheer a bit yourself.
You look at the stone while $carver makes sure it's stable. Everyone is milling about trying to get a good look, leaving you to your thoughts. (if: $negative<$positive)[Just as you thought, ](if: $negative>$positive)[You had your doubts, but ]$deceasedname would have been proud to see this memorial. Standing, it reaches to your waist, proclaiming the memory of your $deceased in red, yellow, black and white. (if: $carver is 'Öpir')[The loops are well balanced and the whole stone makes a harmonious impression.](if: $carver is 'Lifstæinn')[The animal figure is strong and proud.](if: $carver is 'Runfriðr')[You can't stop looking at the images telling the story of Sigurðr the dragon slayer in an effective yet complex way.](if: $carver is 'Balli')[The design is old-fashioned, but carries the weight of tradition. You like it.](if: $carver is 'Grimr Skald')[The familiar crossband design is nice in its simplicity. You knew what you were getting and you got it.](if: $carver is 'Vighjálmr')[The boy did well. His carving is slightly wobbly in places and you're pretty sure that't not how $deceasedname is written, but all the same.](if: $carver is 'Ásmundr')[The design is strong and stable, just like its carver.](if: $carver is 'Hástæinn')[The carving may be the weakest part of the monument, though. What is that weird lumpy figure holding? Shouldn't that snake continue after crossing under the other? And you're no expert, but those runes look very unfamiliar. Ah well.] You take a deep breath. You miss $deceasedname all over again, but somehow, that heavy weight has lifted.
Tiðkumi comes up to you, puts his arm around your shoulder and hands you a mug of beer.
(unless: $carver is 'Hástæinn')["It's beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous."](if: $carver is 'Hástæinn')["Maybe not as nice as it could have been, to be honest, but it's a lovely memorial."] You agree. You think you did well.(if: $carver is 'Lifstæinn')["I have something to tell you," your foster brother adds. You look up from the stone.
"What is it?" you ask, although you have your suspicions.
"Well... I've decided to try to get into the runestone carving business myself. I mean, you see, Lifstæinn would be willing to take me on as an apprentice, and I think I'm rather promising already, and my wife agrees, and it's just..."
"I know. (if: $negative<$positive)[It's a great idea. I'm sure you'll do well, foster brother."](if: $negative>$positive)["It's an uncertain way of life, but if that's what you want, do it."]
Tiðkumi just looks at you. Then tears come to his eyes and he laughs and hugs you.]
"So what does it say?" Gunnarr the farm hand asks you(if: $carver is 'Ásmundr')[, although his gaze is affectionately directed at $carver].
"Ehrm, I'm not the best at reading runes. $carver, why don't you do the honours?"
$carver steps forward, having also been given a mug of beer and congratulated. (if: $carver is 'Runfriðr')[Her sister catches your eye and gives you a warm smile. Oh dear.](if: $carver is 'Grimr Skald')["Absolutely! But first, a small gem from the word-hoard." He proceeds to recite a short verse about $deceasedname, using some of the phrases he came up with while working. You think you may be referred to in it as well, but you'll have to hear it again to be certain. You thank $carver warmly for his art, and he moves next to the stone.]
Pointing at the runes with a stick, $carver reads out the inscription, and finally, you hear [[the words that will stand for a thousand years and more.->Inskrift]]
Over the following days, $carver is busy with the hard and slow work of carving the runestone. The chink of the chisel grows familiar to the farm, as does the presence of $carver (if: $carver is 'Öpir')[and his followers](if: $carver is 'Runfriðr')[and her sister](if: $carver is 'Ásmundr')[and his apprentices](if: $carver is 'Balli')[and his snoring at night].
(if: $carver is 'Ásmundr')[$carver really seems to be getting along with Gunnarr, your farm hand, going with him on short fishing trips when he needs a break.](if: $carver is 'Lifstæinn')[Tiðkumi spends more and more of his days helping $carver work, and has been allowed to carve parts of the broader lines himself.](if: $carver is 'Runfriðr')[$carver does very little of the carving herself, instead directing the local stonemason who procured the stone. Only when a small detail needs to be done just right does she pick up a hammer and chisel. She sits by the stone working on some embroidery, but always with an eye on the carving. You spend some time discussing a deal with her sister Gislaug for dyed yarns.](if: $carver is 'Balli')[You expected work to progress slowly because of $carver's age, but he works with surprising speed. In the evenings, he tells stories about the heroes of the area, some of them your ancestors.](if: $carver is 'Vighjálmr')[After a while, $carver's nerves seem to calm, and you can see that his work isn't bad at all. He also becomes a more pleasant person to be around as he lowers his guard, especially charming some of the younger women on the farm.](if: $carver is 'Grimr Skald')[He really isn't the best stone carver you've seen - not that you've seen that many - but he makes up for it by singing and reciting his verse as he works. Several members of your household take to going to the runestone when they need a break.](if: $carver is 'Hástæinn')[You do get a feeling that he doesn't work all that hard, though. Often you come across him napping in the grass or explaining how to milk a goat to Arnví, who milks the goats. He assures you that everything's under control.](if: $carver is 'Öpir')[Tiðkumi refers to the work area around the runestone as "$carver's court", but with a smile. People gravitate towards $carver, who is happy for the attention. You have noticed, however, that when $carver needs to concentrate, he sends one of his apprentices to entertain the crowd in his place.]
When the carving is done, $carver asks to have a temporary shelter erected over the stone. The dry weather feels stable, but the stone now needs to be painted, and $carver doesn't want to risk the wet paint being washed away in a sudden storm. Once the paint is dry, you're told, all that remains is the actual erecting of the stone. You and your family have already decided to make a day of it, ensuring there's good meat and beer for everyone already prepared.
"Gather some strong people," $carver says one day, [["the stone's ready when you are."->Runsten klar]]
