"Great to have you on board. I'm sure you have lots of questions. First things first, take this. It's our prototype smart tool for wayfinding called MAPS. Short for Multidirectional Asymmetric Positioning System." She hands you what looks like a piece of smooth, black glass. [[Take the MAPS.]] [[Maps? Where we're going we don't need maps.]]You take the object. "Trust me. You'll want MAPS for today's challenge. Every new starter on the graduate programme has a chance to present ideas, today. In three hours." You grip MAPS tightly. "During your assessment process, you may have heard us talking about mission-based working and how often our graduates start sprinting from day one – we really meant it. Yesterday, we were asked by senior leaders to invent a simple, effective way of communicating between our global Dyson offices –across time zones, languages and cultural differences. "It’s no mean feat – and this brief only came about yesterday. Luckily you're here just in time to help us out." She points at MAPS. "This has been programmed to take you on a journey. Collect as much useful information as you can. And remember that Dyson rewards perseverance." MAPS displays an outline schematic of the building, with a glowing red dot. "That dot is you. MAPS will guide you the rest of the way. To see how it works, say Experimental Robotics Division. I should warn you - random guesses or actions will have... unusual consequences." Lara answers her phone that’s been ringing in her pocket for 5 minutes. You think you overhear someone telling her to fly to China tomorrow for a robot launch... "Oh, and you're all racing against each other”. You catch Dev’s eye. Guess that means you’re on your own then. “First to complete the journey gets to present their ideas." [[Say, "Experimental Robotics Division".]] [[Say, "Rudimental Semiotics Transition".]]Lara gives you a kind but slightly confused smile. "Trust me. You'll want MAPS for today's challenge. [[Say, "Experimental Robotics Division".]] [[Say, "Rudimental Semiotics Transition".]]Huh, that actually worked. You walk to the point indicated by MAPS and enter the room. You’re surrounded by robots. Tall, short, spikey, fluffy. Endless lines of code are plastered on every screen and machines are whizzing in all directions. It feels not too dissimilar to a petting zoo. You bend down and pat a robot on its ‘head’. Anyway… You ask MAPS where you should go next. The building schematic spins then a red line extends from the dot down the corridor.  You walk down the hall, past room after room filled with whirring and beeping devices you've never seen before, until you reach the door indicated on MAPS. It's labelled "D∞".  A handwritten note underneath it reads: "The teleportation network is an experimental framework based on quantum mechanics and particle physics. It is not for lunch deliveries. And yes, Steve, we know you enjoyed your visit but this includes getting the freshest sushi possible from Dyson Tokyo." [[Knock on the door.]] [[Explore the building a bit.]]You knock on the door. After a second there is a slight click, and the door swings soundlessly open. Inside it is completely dark, and not even the light from the hallway can penetrate it. Once inside the lights turn on along the ceiling. They look like satellites… Dyson lights maybe? The gentle hue reveals a small room no bigger than a supply closet. It's completely empty. On one wall is a panel of dark glass. Just underneath it there is an X, which looks set into the floor. The floor itself is concrete. [[Touch the glass panel on the wall.]] [[Look at the X on the floor.]] [[Say, "To infinity and beyond!"]] You find the stairwell. As you've come to expect by now, it looks as much like a stairwell as a Shinkansen Bullet train looks like a steam engine. Tentatively, you walk onto the top step. Immediately you hear a piercing alarm, followed by a friendly but authoritative voice. "Hello! It seems you are attempting to use the stairs to reach your destination. Unfortunately, that is not possible at this moment. Would you like to be transported to a viable area?" You look up and down the stairwell. It's completely empty. You check your watch. Somehow an hour has already passed. [[Yes, transport me there immediately!]] [[No, I'll take my chances.]]You stand in front of the dark glass panel. There are no instructions or words of any kind. The panel comes to life with a map of the world, with four highlighted locations: Tokyo, Singapore, Chicago, and Malmesbury. Thin lines go between each. You look at MAPS. It's suggesting you start in... Tokyo. As in, go there. You blink. Tokyo...? How do I... This is all happening so fast. [[Run away and pretend to break your leg.]] [[There's no time for that - let's teleport!]]The X on the floor is big, white and somewhat conspicuous. There are some black marks around it that look like burns – you try not to think about that. [[Touch the glass panel on the wall.]] [[Say, "To infinity and beyond!"]]"As you wish." Suddenly, the stairs underneath you fold together, creating a slide. You involuntarily close your eyes, expecting to fall down. But when you open them you see you're sliding up the stairwell. Just as you begin to think you're going to float all the way, a door opens seamlessly in the wall next to you and you are gently sucked out of the stairwell. After what feels like less than a second another door opens and you're surprised to find yourself back in the hall outside the teleportation room. Checking the time you notice that entire episode only took a minute. [[Knock on the door.]]You begin to walk up the stairs. But after about five minutes you notice the space between you and where you were on MAPS hasn't changed. You stop to get your bearings when Kim almost runs you over – arms full of machine parts and large shiny books, pulling a large vacuum on wheels along behind her. You ask her where she is going. "I’m working on different ways to demonstrate Dyson machines in-store around the world… but in every language possible – so I thought I'd see what I can do with a staircase." You tentatively wish her luck and wonder if you've taken enough time exploring. [[Leave the stairwell and head back to the room.]] [[Ask to be taken somewhere->Yes, transport me there immediately!]] [[Obey the laws of thermodynamics and keep walking.]]You exit the stairwell and find your way back to the teleportation room. You look at the time and realise that only a minute has passed since you left. You decide to leave that conundrum for later. [[Knock on the door.]]You put your head down and continue on. Every so often the sharp alarm sounds again with the voice, but you push it from your mind. Surely a simple set of stairs can't defeat you. Hours seem to pass, but when you look at your phone it's only a few minutes from when you thought you started. The entire stairwell appears to pulse with a weird energy. You start to forget where you were going. [[Sit down. The stairs look so comfortable.]] [[Keep walking.]]You settle into a nice looking set of stairs. Suddenly their hard surface looks like a comfortable pillow. As your eyes close you can hear a faint alarm and a voice saying, "Hello, these stairs are not made for sleeping. Would you like to be transp...." And then you fall asleep. THE ENDYou walk and walk. Civilisations rise and fall. The air around you crystallises. You cannot go on but you cannot stop. You are trapped in what feels like Escher’s stairs, a never-ending spiral of mystery. No. You force yourself to concentrate. There are other ways out of this. [[Head back to the teleportation room.]] [[Sit down. The stairs look so comfortable.]] [[Try and kick down the wall - surely you're close!]]You could keep walking, but a strong sense of purpose overcomes you. You will not be defeated by stairs! [[Leave the stairwell and head back to the room.]]You grab your leg and fall to the ground, groaning. After a few seconds you feel ridiculous and sit up. [[There's no time for that - let's teleport!]]You look at MAPS. Instead of the building schematic there is now a simple button marked TELEPORT. As you touch it, it suddenly occurs to you that you have no idea what's waiting on the other side. You open your mouth, realise there's no one to ask, and your words disappear amidst a swirl of lights. For a moment everything goes dark. [[Tokyo here we come!]]You find yourself in a room similar to the one you just left. There's a desk piled with papers and objects, a couple of chairs, and even a small rubbish bin. There is the same dark glass panel, with a metal box and red button next to it. MAPS vibrates and you look down to see a list of seemingly random statements: "Pens are useful." "What happened to oneteen?" "There is great coffee in Tokyo." [[Look at the desk.]] [[Look at the panel.]] [[Look at the rubbish bin]] The desk is a wild mess and seems to belong to an information architect, based on the books stacked on its surface. Also on the desk is a notepad, several pens, tape, and a rather out of place red button. [[Look at the notepad.]] [[Look at the pens.]] [[Look at the tape.]] [[Look at the button.]] [[Look at the panel.]] [[Look at the rubbish bin]]It's empty and very, very clean. [[Look at the panel.]] The notepad has a message written neatly on it: "Notice: Due to the repeated use of this teleport to send nasi lemak to Malmesbury, we have changed the usage protocol to only receive. Should you wish to "send" you will require two people. One to push the desk button and one to push the panel button. Once open, you'll need to use the ___________ to enter a code. Management" There is a hole in the note that obscures what you need for the code. Next to it someone has scrawled "XI". [[Look at the pens.]] [[Look at the tape.]] [[Look at the button.]] [[Look at the panel.]] [[Look at the rubbish bin]]A selection of very nice, very good pens that seem to snap together. Which would be handy, you guess, if you wanted to make a pen bridge. You see two of them have been stuck together with tape. [[Look at the notepad.]] [[Look at the tape.]] [[Look at the button.]] [[Look at the panel.]] [[Look at the rubbish bin]]A roll of electrical tape. You try speaking to it but soon learn it's not voice activated. [[Look at the notepad.]] [[Look at the pens.]] [[Look at the button.]] [[Look at the panel.]] [[Look at the rubbish bin]]It's a red button on a metal box, the kind in movies they tell you not to press under any circumstances. Naturally the desire to press it is overwhelming. [[Look at the notepad.]] [[Look at the pens.]] [[Look at the tape.]] [[Look at the panel.]] [[Look at the rubbish bin]]The glass panel is similar to the one you've used. Next to it is a metal box with a red button on it. But touching it does nothing. You need to turn it on. [[Look at the desk now.]] [[Look at the rubbish bin]]The desk is a wild mess and seems to belong to an information architect, based on the books stacked on its surface. [[Look at the notepad.->Notepad2]] [[Look at the button.->Button2]] [[Look at the pens.->Pens2]] [[Look at the tape.->Tape2]] [[Look at the rubbish bin]]You click several of the pens together, making a kind of wand. Theoretically it could reach across the room. [[Try and press the button across the room.]] [[Add tape to the connections.]] [[Wave it around and say, "Buttonus Pressdownus".]] Nothing happens. That you can see, at least. Silly you. [[Look at the notepad.->Notepad2]] [[Look at the pens.->Pens2]] [[Look at the tape.->Tape2]] [[Look at the panel->Panel2]] [[Look at the rubbish bin]]You try and press the button but before you even reach it the pens fall apart. [[Add tape to the connections.]] [[Wave it around and say, "Buttonus Pressdownus".]]You strengthen your pen wand with tape. Now it is a mighty presser of buttons. You line up the button again, when a door you hadn't noticed opens in the wall, and out steps Dev, looking slightly frazzled. "I was in a stairwell for, like, three hours. And then the stairs started talking to me and there was a flash of light. Where am I?" You inform him he's in Singapore and he goes a bit pale. He tells you he was looking for some lighting rigs for a product shoot, and got lost. "I think this is part of the challenge." You mention the teleporter and he goes pale again. Saying he'll take his chances with the stairs, he disappears back through the door. [[Try and press the buttons at the same time.]] You wait a moment. Nothing happens. Disappointed, you soldier on. [[Try and press the button across the room.]] [[Add tape to the connections.]]Taking a deep breath, you point the pen wand at the wall button and your finger on the desk button. Just to add a sense of a moment, you do a countdown. "Ok. Three. Two. One!" You push with the wand and press down at the same time. The metal box on the other side opens with a click. Inside is a keypad with only the numbers 1, 2 and 3, and a handwritten sticky note that reads, "Hey, we had to reset the code. So now it's just the number every even-digit palindromic number is divisible by. Cheers!" [[Type in 2.]] [[Type in 123.]] [[Type in 11.]] [[Type in 3.]] You press 2 and wait, expectantly. Nothing happens. [[Try again->Try and press the buttons at the same time.]]You take a deep breath and type in 123. A second goes by and nothing happens. Then from out of the keypad you hear, "Easy as ABC". But instead of a Jackson 5 medley you feel time running away from you. Suddenly, you're back at the beginning of your day. [[Right...->"Hi. I'm Lara. Welcome to Dyson."]]There is a clear beep and the screen next to you comes to life, revealing the same map and locations as before. You click on Singapore and switch the settings to send and receive. You take a deep breath, stand on the X in front of the panel and push TELEPORT. [[Singapore, here we come!]]You press 3 and wait. And wait. And then, because you kind of need the break, wait a bit more. [[That's enough waiting.->Try and press the buttons at the same time.]]You feel the fabric of space and time tearing. Suddenly, you're back at the beginning of your day. [[So that's what she meant...->"Hi. I'm Lara. Welcome to Dyson."]]Seems the building didn't like that. You feel time bend and sway and suddenly you're back at the beginning of your day. [[Oh bother.->"Hi. I'm Lara. Welcome to Dyson."]]You arrive in Singapore in almost complete darkness. MAPS shows you another set of odd sentences: "Red and blue." "You need to find the treads." "The main research and design hub is called the Singapore Technology Centre." You step away from the teleporter and hear your footsteps echo. You really need to turn on the lights. [[Say, "Turn on the lights".]] [[Look for a light switch.]] [[Use the glow of your phone.]]Your voice booms through the empty space. [[Look for a light switch.]] [[Use the glow of your phone.]]You can barely see your own hand, nevermind the walls for a switch. [[Say, "Turn on the lights".]] [[Use the glow of your phone.]]You hold up your phone and scan your surroundings. You hold up your phone and scan your surroundings. You're in what appears to be a vast manufacturing plant. It seems to be automated as there’s no one around. You notice a counter on the wall showing over 10 million motors have been made here. Next to you is a power transformer, with some disconnected wires. [[Look at the wires.]]There are a series of wires coming out of the wall, and one thick black wire leading into the transformer. For reasons that are not clear (but you imagine Lara was involved) the wires are not connected. [[Try the white wire]] [[Try the green wire.]] [[Try the purple wire]] [[Lick the black wire]]The fuse blows with a surge of vicious energy. Seems you might be stuck in Singapore for some time. THE ENDThey don't fit together. It's like mashing a circle into a square hole. [[Try the white wire]] [[Try the purple wire]] [[Lick the black wire]]You pause briefly. Red and blue make purple, right? The purple wire connects perfectly. Slowly the lights come on. [[Look around.]]Uhm... that doesn't seem remotely wise. Are you sure? [[Yes, it's time to live dangerously.]] [[No, that is not the way to live right now.->Look at the wires.]]But seriously - that wire is very likely live. [[No one got anywhere by taking the safe route.]] [[Ok, ok, maybe there's a better way.->Look at the wires.]]You put your tongue against the wire and immediately feel a surge of electricity fire through your body, knocking you off your feet. You pass out. In hindsight that probably was predictable. THE ENDNow that you can see more clearly, you notice the carefully labelled, blindingly white boxes. You look at a nearby shelf and see they are labelled HOME and OFFICE. The temptation to look inside is fierce, but you decide that might not be the wisest choice on the first day. A Dyson 360 Eye rolls past and stops at your feet. It seems to look at you and indicates you should follow. You watch it scuttle away across the room to another teleporter you hadn't noticed before. Another handwritten note informs you that for reasons that are still unclear, this teleporter will only go to Chicago. The Dyson 360 Eye lingers, as if expecting a treat. [[Step into the teleporter to Chicago]] [[Pat the Dyson 360 Eye on its...head.]]You step into the teleporter, hold up MAPS, and press TELEPORT. Nothing happens. You press it again. Still nothing. [[Try jumping.]] [[Try spinning round in circles.]] [[Try shouting for help.]]You jump once. Then, because it felt kind of good, you jump a few more times. But nothing seems to change. [[Try shouting for help.]] [[Try spinning round in circles.]]You spin around and nothing happens [[Try jumping.]] [[Try shouting for help.]] [[Try spinning round in circles again.]]You shout "Hello!" at the top of your lungs. It echoes throughout the warehouse, but otherwise, is met by silence. Then you hear a muffled noise from your pocket. MAPS is vibrating. A gentle voice emanates from the smooth glass. "How may I help you?" [[I need to get back to Malmesbury.]] [[I just want to go home.]] [[How can I get this machine working?]]You spin around again. Despite getting a little dizzy, nothing happens. [[Try jumping.]] [[Try shouting for help.]] [[Try spinning round in circles a third time.]]"Oh, is that all. I can certainly do that. Are you sure? I can guarantee where I'll send you... but not when." [[Yes, get me to Malmesbury!->"Hi. I'm Lara. Welcome to Dyson."]] [[I just want to go home.]] [[How can I get this machine working?]]"Ah. I'm afraid I can't do that. Operation 'There's No Place Like Home' has not been granted provisional approval yet." [[I need to get back to Malmesbury.]] [[How can I get this machine working?]]You feel pretty disoriented now. [[Try jumping.]] [[Try shouting for help.]] [[Try spinning round in circles yet again.]]You're not very accomplished at standing upright at the moment. [[Try jumping.]] [[Try shouting for help.]] [[Try spinning round in circles one more time.]]You spin and spin and spin, unable to stop, and eventually pass out. THE ENDYou reach into your pocket and take out MAPS, which is now a luminous pink. You frantically tap it to make it stop but by doing so a flash of light emits from MAPS and forms a 3D hologram of an office. You’re looking into a large open space with a glass roof. It’s empty but there appears to be an enormous cylindrical object at the back. It’s the size of at least two cars. What is that? As you get closer, you see it’s engraved with letters. Suddenly a man walks across the office, very close to you. You didn’t realise this was live. He waves and says, “Hi, you’re through to Dyson IT Service Desk. How can I help?” Surprised and taken aback by the whole situation (let alone why he appeared) you explain your teleporter is broken. "Okay… before we start can I ask have you tried turning it off and on again?”. You laugh but it’s met by a blank face and a raised eyebrow. Oh, he was serious. [[Turn the teleporter on and off.]] Could it be this easy? You reach out and press the power button until you hear the teleporter power down. Then you press the button again. The screen above the teleporter comes to life, with the familiar world map in place, and a line between Singapore and Chicago. Stepping on the X, you look at MAPS and press TELEPORT. [[Now where have you gone?]]Once again your awareness arrives a second before your body. You find yourself in a large, open office, overlooking a river. A young man intensely focussed on the complex 3D model on his screen notices you looking, and turns in his chair. "Can I... help you?" You’re surprised to hear his Australian accent. After listening for a bit, he points you towards a far corner. You remember your task and begin to ask about what he does to stay in touch with Dyson people around the world. He tells you about the Forward Dyson committee and skills sharing sessions. The last one had people sharing photoshop skills and CAD design; someone was teaching origami and someone else led a workshop on basic programming. You head to the corner and are only a little surprised to find Kim there, chatting with a few other people. She sees you and her eyes light up. "Hi! How's it going?" You both share what you're morning has entailed. She shows you a diagram she's been sketching with a dizzying array of arrows and notations. "It's a work in progress." You wish her luck and step on the X. [[Onwards and upwards!]] You find yourself in what looks like a photography studio, with curving white walls, lighting stands, and paper backdrops. Several people stand near a white plinth, apparently discussing a solid black cube that sits on top. An assistant with a light metre notices you, and runs to cover the cube with a shirt. You see it's Dev. One of the group walks over with a puzzled expression. "Hi, I'm Rob. Sorry for the secrecy but what you absolutely did not see is a product still in very early testing. I take it you're a new starter. Technically, you're not supposed to be here." You apologise and ramble a bit about teleporters and Singapore and pen-based riddles, but Rob smiles and waves you off. "No, I don't mean you shouldn't be here. Well, yes I do. But I meant that you actually can't be here - the room is shielded even from teleportation. I wonder..." You notice the group has moved closer around you. You feel slightly uneasy. "Could he be," whispers an older woman holding a tablet, "could he be the one?" The group stares at you. [[Quickly mash TELEPORT->The one]] [["The one...?"->The one]] [["Yes, I am the one. As foretold in the prophecy.->The one]]The group continues to stare intently. Then they burst out laughing. Rob claps you on the shoulder, wiping away a tear. "Sorry, just a bit of fun. Where do you need to get?" You check MAPS and see a line leading off into the building. They send you off with a round of applause and good lucks. You feel like things are getting easier, which is possibly a bad sign. Before leaving you catch up with Dev. "I think I've learned more this morning than I learned in the last year at university." You think about everything you've experienced today and have to agree. [[Head to your destination.]]Following the route described by Rob takes you through several back rooms, hallways, alternate staircases, and, at one point, outside the building on a small circular walkway. But the sense of progress is refreshing, and you feel your step becoming energised as you near your goal. You enter a long, narrow hallway. It has a sphinx sculpture at the end. You rub your eyes to make sure, but the sphinx remains. "Halt. You have done well to get to this point. But to pass on you must answer my riddles." Your stomach sinks. "First riddle! What has four fingers and a thumb but is not alive?" [["Oh that's easy, it's a g..."]] [[Come on, that's obviously a b..."]] [["Everyone knows that's a k..."]]"Very good. [[Touch the glass panel on the wall.]] [[Look at the X on the floor.]]You reach down and give the robot a little pat. It spins in a circle and then scoots away. From somewhere out of sight you hear surprised voices, presumably responding to the speeding robot. A group wearing coveralls rounds the corner and stops in surprise when they see you. You quickly try and explain your situation through a mixture of half-sentences and hand gestures. Their surprise turns to smiles. One even laughs. They wish you luck and head on their way. You make a note to explore opportunities for exchanges between Dyson offices. [[Step into the teleporter to Chicago->Step into the teleporter to Chicago2]]You ignore the little robot and go to step on the X, but it scoots in front of you and nudges at your foot expectantly. [[Stop being cruel and give it a pat->Pat the Dyson 360 Eye on its...head.]]"Ah, well let's see. I think I have a solution." Something starts to vibrate in your pocket. [[What's vibrating?]]Welcome to Dyson HQ. It’s your first day on the graduate programme. As you find a seat in reception you look around at the 25 years’ worth of Dyson machines that surround you. Dyson made a washing machine...? You wait patiently, a little nervous but excited to see how the day will unfold. There seems to be an event happening. The whole place is flooded with people. Kids are constructing prototpyes out of anything from balloons to vacuum hoses. There is a crowd of people looking at the wall with pots of dirt, throwing it onto the floor to test with the V8 vacuum product. A member of the James Dyson Foundation team notices you looking a bit lost and approaches you. You explain your situation and she nods, leading you to a room at the back of the store, also bearing the "D∞" label. She gives you an encouraging smile, then heads back to the event.
