I spent my life a pampered lord. I never went out of my way to harm anyone, but never went out of my way to help anyone either and worried little about the plights of the common people. Then one day, I came upon my grandfather's ghost. Once I got over the shock of literally seeing a ghost, he told me that being a truely good person was more than than not doing bad -- I also had to do good.
"Go to that run-down tavern at the edge of the city," he suggested. "Talk to people there. They're all sorely in need of gold. Pick the person who seems the most deserving."
And so I picked up a small pouch of coins, borrowed some old clothes from one of my servants and went to the tarvern...
[[Continue]]I approached the the sad looking man. He sat with a nearly full beer in the corner, looking as if he had been nursing it for a long time. Upon my approaching, a single tear rolled down his face.
"Is there something wrong?" I asked.
"Oh, it's nothing of your concern. There's nothing you can do."
"Try me," I said taking a seat next to the man.
"It's my CHILD!" he sobbed. "He's gotten real sick. There's only one medicine that will cure him, but I can't afford it. If I don't get it tonight he'll die! Please give me some coins so I can save him!"
[[Okay]]
[[How much do you need?]]
[[Back->Enter tavern]]I sat down next to the drunk guy. He slammed his mug on the old splintered counter. "I said gimme another drink!"
"Not until you pay off your tab," the bartended asserted.
"I'd love to, but I gotta fam'ly to feed. Can't ya give a guy a break?"
"Maybe if you didn't waste all your money on drinks, you'd have more money to feed your family."
The man sighed and looked sadly into his empty mug.
[[Pay off his tab]]
[[Back->Enter tavern]]I stood outside the tavern with Grandpa's ghost floating beside me. "How do I do this?" I whispered.
"Easy. Just go in and talk to people. Decide who has the most sincere story and is most in need. But beware, some people might try to trick you."
"But I'm in disguise and only brought three gold coins to avoid suspision. It's not like they'll know I'm someone who can give them a lot of money."
"True, but there are those who will trick beggers into giving up their pennies. So be cautious. This is where I'll be leaving you. Good luck!"
I cried out in protest, but Grandpa had already disappeared.
[[Enter tavern]]I surveyed the tavern. Only three people were inside: a sad guy, a very drunk guy and the bartender. Who should I talk to?

I gave the man my three gold coins. His eyes lit up as he surveyed them greedily.
"Thank you, good man. Thank you. I must go now," he said and bolted out of the tavern without another word.
My task complete, I got up and started on the long walk home. I felt I should have been happy, but something felt off. I had my men do some investigating and found out this person was known for telling fake sob stories to get people to give him money. I wish I'd listened better to my grandfather's warning.
[[Replay->Start]] The guy grabbed my collar. "I don't know! As much as you can give! Give me something, please!"
[[Okay]]
[[Back->Enter tavern]]The drunk man was estatic, going so far as to kiss me on the cheek and order drinks for both of us, since the three gold coins actually left him with a credit. The bartender was also happy since the tavern had more gold than it had in ages.
I thought I had really done a lot of good until I looked into him again a few weeks later. The man had already used up his credit and was once more causing trouble for the tavern, pestering other patrons to pay off his tab, flying into rages and breaking the new furniture the tavern had bought with gold from his tab. I had the man arrested to prevent further harm, but still felt empty inside.
[[Replay->Start]] I smiled at the bartender. "I wasn't completey honest earlier. I said I didn't have any coppers, but I do have something else."
I dumped the gold coins on the counter. The bartender could only stare in disbelief.
"From what I hear, you're the most diserving person here. Use this money to make the tavern someplace for decent customers."
The bartended stammered his thanks and brought me a drink on the house. A couple weeks later I came back and found that the bar had had a huge overhaul and was so nice, I barely recognized it. A group of tidy civil customers chatted with the bartender who looked years younger than he had when I first saw him.
A sense of warmth filled me. Was this what you felt when you did good for others? I looked upward.
"Thanks, Grandpa," I whispered.
[[Replay->Start]] "Hello. How are you doing tonight?"
"Okay. The patrons are especially sketchy tonight, but at least one of them paid for his drink. I hope you'll do the same."
I felt myself blush. I had been so focused on my goal of giving away a decent sum, I had not thought to bring smaller coins to buy drinks.
"I'm afriad I don't have any coppers tonight. I just came to socialize."
"I don't see why you came here. The place is run down, the furniture splintered and the mugs chipped. Mostly lowlifes hang out here, since we need money too much to chase 'em out."
I looked around and noticed he was right. Maybe the tavern itself needed the gold more than the patrons.
