There’s a pounding in your head as you wake up. The usual symptoms of a headache, or even worse a migraine, coming to bother your already shitty day. Still left feeling lost, your daily schedule completely messed up from your parents leaving for what your mother called a well overdue ‘mid-life sabbatical’. But you were just starting to think your parents wanted the honeymoon they never got
With a groan you rise to your feet, feeling your muscles ache from having to clean yesterday. You wouldn’t call your house huge under any means, “small and quaint” fit it better, but having to do all the work by yourself proved to be more tiresome than you thought.

“You can never take the spirits for granted <<link 'mi amor'>>

You groan, “Mama, I can’t even //see// spirits,” your eyes rolling over-dramatically “just keep telling me the stories!”

You'll see more than any of us could ever wish too mi vida” She says to you with more seriousness than an 8 year old can understand properly. “I just wished I could take that burden.” Even now at 20 years old you still don’t understand what she’s talking about as you haven’t even sensed a spirit sneezing no matter how hard you try.
And all of a sudden the scene in-front of you changes to something you could only describe as a nightmare.

Again, you are stuck watching this all unfold as if it were only a film playing.
“When your mama gets back she’ll explain. We’ll both explain, just please, please we have to keep going.” The other you has no choice but to look forward and run as they stumble on their own feet, and as you blink its now you being grabbed by your papa, your mama also now in-front you grabbing onto your shoulders.
“I wish we had more time mi vida, you deserve more time, but spirits care little for our wants.” Her fingers dig into your shoulders ina way that gives away her emotions. Wether that be in stress, fear or both, you can’t tell.
“We’ll find you when we can, but you need to go. Get off the island, that’s the only way you’ll be safe. Go and don’t look back.” You try to speak, but its like your voice has been locked away. Your mouth opening and shutting with no sound coming out.
Its only as your mother and father turn to walk away from you that you realize your frozen in spot, completely unable to move. No matter how much you try to run towards them, scream at them to stop, to come back and explain, nothing. And although it sounds dumb, you feel almost as if something is laughing at your struggle, the mockery getting heavier the more you struggle, as if they are waiting for you to realize how futile it is.
And it’s only as you watch your parents get engulfed in flames that your fight goes out of you, burnt in the raging fire in front of you and you hear one last whisper.

You grab your sketchbook, looking for an empty page. I’ll have to buy a new in a few days. You think to yourself as you realise you’re running out of pages once again, the way you take to drawing feeling almost like an addiction, the only way you know to express thoughts too big for your body, and this time isn’t any different.
Your father would also make you paint from different plants and insects and as you try to dip your brush into the paints you realise you are also running low on those. Well now that’s unfortunate. You sigh to yourself seeing as you have no idea where your parents have run off to, but enough of that, right now you need to clear your head and its what you’ll do.
[[Clear your mind]]You take in a deep breath as you finally place your sketchbook down beside you on the bed, clenching and un-clenching your fingers to make sure they don’t cramp later. You scoot your way to the edge of the bed and stand, clasping your hands together in front of your and stretching them above you, feeling your back crack. You also twist side-to-side, the most satisfying pops leaving your body aching from being hunched over while painting.
You go to check out your drawing, you had gotten so into the zone that you stopped thinking completely and just let your hands lead your drawing. So now that you look at it you can’t help but to be confused. It looks like you had drawn a <<link 'Cempasúchil'>>

What leaves you at a lose is the hands, two black arms grabbing coming out of the bottom of the page, two hands grabbing onto the petal of the cempazuchitl the crooked fingers looking almost as if they’re trying to pull the petals off.
//What the fuck?//
You feel the hairs at the back of your neck raise almost as if someone just blew on your neck and goosebumps crawl up your arms. You go to reach for the painting when someone calls your name from downstairs.

You sit up in your bed, swinging your legs over the side of the bed stretching lightly before reaching over to your bedside table where you pick up the book your mom had left you before leaving. It was a book speaking about the history of the aztec warriors and their different positions, you were currently on the section about jaguar warriors and eagle warriors. They fought with a wooden clubs studded with obsidian volcanic glass blades, called a macuahuitl. They also used spears and atlatls. The origin of the eagle and jaguar warriors stems from the self-less acts of two deities; Nanahuatzin, meaning Pimply One, and Tecuciztecatl, meaning Lord of Snails, who sacrificed themselves to bring life to the sun. They emerged from the fire transforming into an eagle and a jaguar.
Jaguar warriors or ocēlōmeh were elite members of the elite aztec military. They wore jaguar patterend cloth and skins at war because they believed the animal's strengths would be given to them during battles. Jaguar warriors were used at the battlefront in military campaigns. To become a jaguar warrior, a member of the Aztec army had to capture a total of four enemies from battles. This was said to honor their gods in a way far greater than killing enemy soldiers in the battlefield. For a warrior to kill an enemy was considered clumsy. Of all of the Aztec warriors, they were the most feared.
Eagle warriors or cuāuhmeh were a special class of infantry soldier in the Aztec army. Eagle warriors, along with the jaguar warriors, were the only such classes which did not restrict access solely to the nobility, as commoners were occasionally admitted for special merit. The uniforms of eagle warriors signified both courage on the battlefield and physical strength. Their shields were brightly coloured and decorated with feathers. As headgear, eagle warriors wore the heads of eagles, including an open beak, and used eagle feathers as adornments. The eagles were soldiers of the Sun, for the eagle was the symbol of the Sun.
//[[suspicious sound]]//Leaving the clothes hung up to dry, you head back in doors for the mop. Filling up a bucket with warm water and pouring in some fabulouso you take a in a breath of the comforting lavender smell. You grab the mop and stick it into the bucket, making sure you wring out the extra water before placing it on the floor. Starting with the living room, you make sure to go around the whole house opening the windows as you go along to make sure the smell dpoesn’t get too strong.
As you’re mopping the sounds of the village waking uo flow in through the windows. Mothers yelling at their kids as they run down the path, the musicians who always sit in the middle of the village starting to strum lightly on their guitars, farmers pulling their carts, talking about how the harvest will go.
