(else:) [You're (text-colour:magenta)[missing something]. [[Come back when you find it.|town]]]
The great sorcerer, (text-colour:blue)[Mephisto], was once the (text-colour:orange)[pillar of our fair town]. He was a kind soul who did anything and everything he could to help us. The town used to be a (text-colour:orange)[trade capital], people would come from all over just to barter with us.
Life was good, business was good.
Until a (text-colour:blue)[fair maiden] came to town and set her eyes on him.
[[Continue|story]]She was(text-colour:orange)[ beautiful], everyone wanted her as their own, and none could take their eyes off her. Myself included, unfortunately...
And of course she went (text-colour:orange)[straight for our foundation]. Our dear (text-colour:blue)[Mephisto]...
She whisked him off his feet, and he became more and more(text-colour:orange)[ reclusive]. The town became quieter, becoming a (text-colour:orange)[shell of its former self], as you have seen today.
Until eventually he (text-colour:orange)[disappeared].
[[Continue|story2]]There was a day that (text-colour:blue)[Mephisto] never returned from the castle. Neither did the girl.
Afterwards there was a mysterious string of disappearences. (text-colour:orange)[Burned up corpses] were often seen in the morning, but often there was(text-colour:orange)[ no trace at all].
Traveller, may I ask that you go search for (text-colour:blue)[Mephisto] and let me know what has become of him. The [girl] too, if you so feel the need. In return I will grant you(text-colour:green)[ anything you need]. Food, status, anything I can reasonably give you is yours.
Please, I beg of you. He was one of my closest friends.
[[Fine, I'll help you this once.|help inkeeper]]

You take your leave and settle into a deep sleep
[[Continue|Morning]]Good morning, traveller.
(if: $helpful is true) [I hope you slept well.]
There are a few things you should know before you leave. I couldn't let you go on good concience without telling you at least this.
[[Continue|tips]]The (text-colour:yellow)[castle] to the (text-colour:yellow)[north] is Mephisto's last known location. But be warned, the path there is full of (text-colour:orange)[hazards].
I cannot tell you what lies beyond, for I have not dared to venture that path, but Mephisto was always rather insistent that (text-colour:orange)[nobody stepped foot inside] or near the property.
[[Continue|tips2]]There are (text-colour:orange)[traps] all over the place. Take care on anything that seems(text-colour:orange)[ loose], never take the path that seems (text-colour:orange)[clear], and do not anger the (text-colour:orange)[falcon] should he arrive.
[[Thank you. I shall return soon|morning town]]The(text-colour:yellow)[ town] greets you with silence as you hurredly exit the inn. Not a soul was seen - even the pub was desolate this early in the morning.
With nothing to do and what little provisions you could find, you set out to find the (text-colour:yellow)[castle].
[[Head North]]
[[Head South]]You wander up a (text-colour:yellow)[winding path] passing over a steep hill and into a valley. The biting cold is relentless, the small rays of sun your only solace.
There are (text-colour:yellow)[three paths] that await you, you must choose one to continue.
On the [[left]], a (text-colour:yellow)[small forest], vines curling down from the trees and burrowing themselves into the ground. There is very little light and no telling what lies beyond.
In the [[middle]], the path dips into a (text-colour:yellow)[valley]. The path is clear with very few obstacles. There is a great deal of light, and this path feels very open and forgiving.
On the [[right]], a (text-colour:yellow)[river], lashing angrily at the banks it sits at. The path is somewhat clear but trecherous, with a small amount of space to walk across. You are unsure the ground will be stable. You travel for miles, the(text-colour:red)[ biting cold] seeping into your skin without a hint of forgiveness. There is nothing but a (text-colour:yellow)[desolate landscape], no signs of shelter or much life at all.
The path gives you a sense of (text-colour:orange)[deja-vu] as you continue onwards, before eventually settling down for rest after what feels like hours.
You bundle up in what thin clothes you have and the (text-colour:red)[cold sends you to sleep].
It seems you walked the path you came in on, the desolate landscape seemimg endless without a carridge to keep you going, and (text-colour:red)[die of hypothermia].
[[Return to checkpoint|morning town]]You keep walking with no end in sight, the snow getting thicker and thicker.
You grow weary and cold as the snow drifts begin to reach your waist and hail begins to fall from the sky.
Growing weary from the thickening snow, you sink further downwards, eventually accepting your fate as you slide into the cold abyss and into death's warm embrace. Itr was a dead end anyway, not like you would have reached far enough to find out.
You die of hypothermia.
[[Return to checkpoint|morning town]]You wander into the (text-colour:yellow)[forest], with thick tree roots curling around the edges of the path. The branches and vines scratch at your face as it becomes harder to see in the thick foilage.
You spot a(text-colour:orange)[ large flat rock], most likely man-made, but are unsure of its safety.
[[Jump over the rock]] and don't risk it being a trap.
[[Step on it anyway]], it's probably just a paving stone. The (text-colour:orange)[snow grows thicker] as you walk forward, but the bright sun keeps you in good spirits. There is nothing but fog in the distance but you continue walking, assured that this was the path the (text-colour:blue)[innkeeper] described the night before.
[[Continue|Cold]]The river grows restless as you carefully tread down the path, the patchy sun your only hope of avoiding what seems like a certain death. You walk eagerly as a sense of dread creeps over you.
A (text-colour:yellow)[rickety bridge] stands before you, and an (text-colour:yellow)[overgrown path] to the left.
[[Follow the path]]
[[Cross the bridge]]The (text-colour:orange)[muddy ground] mixed with snow feels like glue against your boots as you tread slowly down the path. The path gives way to a bog as you slip down a (text-colour:yellow)[small bank] and into the river. Attempting to fight the current is useless.
You lose your (text-colour:green)[bag of marbles] and suffer a (text-colour:red)[concussion] as your limp body hurls down the river.
[[Continue|riverbank]]
(set: $marbles to false)You walk towards the (text-colour:yellow)[rickety footbridge], with missing steps throughout, swinging violently in the wind.
[[Go back|right]]
[[Brave the conditions and continue|river crossing]]You slam into the (text-colour:yellow)[bank] and are sent hurdling into the brambles by the river. You're in one piece, mostly, save for a headache and the loss of a little of your dignity.
You look around and see a (text-colour:orange)[gritty path] in the distance, barely trodden on, with thin carridge marks lining the edges.
[[Continue|Castle Perim]] You slowly cross the (text-colour:yellow)[bridge], gripping tight onto the spindly ropes as some steps (text-colour:orange)[begin to fall] behind you. Keeping steady footing, however, you manage to make it across in one piece, but the bridge is (text-colour:orange)[not stable enough to return on].
[[Continue|Castle Perim]]
(set:$bridge to false)You(text-colour:orange)[ jump over the rock] and slip while trying to regain your footing, not noticing the muddy path ahead before you jumped.
You fall down into a ditch and into the lower portion of the (text-colour:yellow)[river], dropping your (text-colour:green)[bag of marbles] in the scuffle.
[[Continue|riverbank]]
(set: $marbles to false)The rock indeed turns out to be a (text-colour:orange)[stepping stone]. The path ahead of you is (text-colour:orange)[muddy and trecherous], so you tread carefully to reach the end of the path without slipping.
[[Continue|Castle Perim]]
(set: $forestpath to true)At last it seems you have reached the (text-colour:yellow)[castle grounds].
You are greeted by (text-colour:orange)[high walls] littered with (text-colour:orange)[black feathers]. The main enterence is blocked by a moat so you (text-colour:orange)[look around] to find a way in.

[[Inspect the branches]]
[[Leave|Castle Perim]] There is an old stagnant moat at the foot of the castle wall. It does not look safe to swim in.

[[Drop the rope]]
[[Keep the rope]]
(set: $ropepull to true)You decide to drop the (text-colour:green)[rope]. It seems to be a little (text-colour:orange)[fragile] anyway. You wouldn't want to hurt yourself with it.
[[Leave|Castle Perim]]

[[Leave|Castle Perim]]
(set: $rope to true)The(text-colour:green)[ loose branches] are (text-colour:orange)[within your reach].
[[Pull the branch]]
[[Leave|forest path]] You pull the(text-colour:green)[ branch] and it falls down easily. It looks sturdy enough.
[[Take the branch and leave|Castle Perim]]
[[Stand on the branch]]
(set: $branch to true)You stand on the (text-colour:green)[branch] and it breaks. It is rotten inside and would have been (text-colour:red)[dangerous] to use. You collect (text-colour:green)[another branch] and repeat the action. This one seems much (text-colour:orange)[stronger].
[[Leave|Castle Perim]]
(set: $sturdy to true)You tie the (text-colour:green)[branch] to the (text-colour:green)[rope] and hurl one end over the wall. It hooks itself between some of the bricks, allowing you to (text-colour:orange)[climb] the wall.
[[Climb the wall]](if: $sturdy is true) [You swing onto the (text-colour:yellow)[wall] and climb it with relative ease, scaling the wall and making your way into the (text-colour:yellow)[castle].
[[Continue|The Castle]]] (else:) [You swing onto the (text-colour:yellow)[wall] and begin to climb it. The branch you picked up was(text-colour:red)[ rotted] on the inside and snaps, causing you to (text-colour:red)[plummet into the moat]. The moat is too thick to swim through and you (text-colour:red)[drown].
[[Return to Checkpoint|Castle Perim]]]The unsettling smell of (text-colour:orange)[dried blood] wafts over to you as you drop onto the ground.
Feeling the piercing gaze of a (text-colour:blue)[stranger] in the distance, and a generally (text-colour:orange)[unsettling feeling], you hurry inside.

The stench of blood grows stronger and you feel your sense of unease grow with every step you take.
The inside of the castle seems abandoned, there is nothing in sight, aside from a few construction objects that seem of little use.

Among the rubble is an (text-colour:green)[axe]. It looks worn with age but could still deal some (text-colour:red)[damage].
[[Take the axe]]
[[Leave|Castle Inner]]You take the (text-colour:green)[axe]. It is quite heavy but you are strong enough to carry it without issue.
[[Continue|Castle Corridor]]

[[Enter the ballroom]]

You keep walking, reaching the (text-colour:yellow)[bandstand] and notice a fresh trail of(text-colour:red)[ blood] alongside a small cluster of (text-colour:orange)[feathers].
[[Keep going|Bandstand]]
[[Escape while you have the chance|Castle Corridor]]You enter the (text-colour:yellow)[kitchen] as the smell of (text-colour:red)[dried blood] grows stronger. There is (text-colour:orange)[not much here], save for a few pieces of mouldy fruit.
(if: $kitchen is false) [ [[Walk into the pantry]]] (else:) [You have faced the dangers of this room before, best not to return]
[[Leave|Castle Corridor]]You walk down a corridor which leads to a (text-colour:yellow)[set of bedrooms]. "Nameless here, evermore," indeed.
[[Try again|Bandstand]]The (text-colour:green)[bag of marbles] roll onto the floor as you hurl the bag at the (text-colour:blue)[raven]. [[Continue|Castle Corridor]]
(set: $stake to false)You keep walking down the corridor, reaching a(text-colour:yellow)[ locked door] with the light of (text-colour:orange)[lit candles] spilling from the cracks. The voices grow louder but the door is so heavy that you (text-colour:orange)[cannot comprehend what is going on].
[[Try the lock]]
[[Hide and wait a while]]You jiggle the handle, revealing the door to be (text-colour:orange)[locked from the inside]. There is (text-colour:orange)[no key in sight].

[[Hide and wait a while]]You duck into a (text-colour:yellow)[nearby cupboard], leaving the door ajar enough to see what is going on in the (text-colour:yellow)[corridor].
A(text-colour:blue)[ beautiful woman] steps outside and hurredly walks down the corridor into the (text-colour:yellow)[kitchen].
It seems she will not be back for a while.
[[Leave the cupboard]]You pick the lock successfully. The door swings open to reveal a(text-colour:blue)[ beautiful young woman] perched on the edge of the bed, with a (text-colour:blue)[young, malourished man] kneeling on the floor.

The woman growls and grips you by your shirt, lifting you into the air.
"I have been waiting for five hundred years for someone like that, and because of you I can't get him back. He was a beautiful soul, and was one of the only people who saw the real me.

A young man is seen kneeling at the bottom of the bed in (text-colour:orange)[ragged robes], clearly (text-colour:orange)[malnourished]. Tattoos litter his back, seemingly of (text-colour:orange)[arcane origin], and his eyes are (text-colour:orange)[hazy and out of focus].
He seems to notice you walk in, the light slowly filling his eyes the more time that passes.
[[Ask who he is]]"Me?" he speaks softly, pain and terror in his voice, somewhat surprised that someone made their way into the house, still wary of you.
