Squirrel Story

Our story begins in the forest. You are a young squirrel searching for a nut. Winter is approaching soon and you must stock up, before the freeze! Find a nut and make it back to the tree... or else. [[bedroom]]

You are in your bedroom. [[play games]] [[go downstairs]]

You play some games. You grow bored rather quickly... [[keep playing]] [[do something else ->bedroom]]

You are in the living room. You don't see anyone else around. [[go upstairs ->bedroom]] [[go to kitchen]]

You keep playing games and eventually fall asleep. [[wake up ->bedroom]]

You are in the kitchen. Something smells good. [[sniff around]] [[go to living room ->go downstairs]] [[go outside]]

You sniff around and find some delicious smelling acorn pie! [[eat some pie!]] [[leave it alone ->go to kitchen]]

You eat some of the acorn pie! It's delicious! [[yummy! ->go to kitchen]]

You are outside on the front porch. It's a beautiful day for collecting nuts! You notice your sister Jessica standing out on the porch. You know you should find a nut soon, but maybe you've got time to goof around a little? [[talk to Jess]] [[goof around a little]] [[go find a nut!]]

You walk up to Jessica. [["Heya sis, what's happenin'?"]] [["Dearest sister, how art thou on this loveliest of days?"]]

You goof around a little. It gets old quick when you realize how hungry you are. Better go find a nut soon! [[go find a nut!]]

You take one step back and two giant steps forward as you leap off the front porch and spread your squirrely arms and legs out wide! You catch some of the breeze as you descend and go soaring off through the forest. Oh, did I mention you're a flying squirrel? [[fly around]]

Jess turns to face you and rolls her eyes, before rushing inside the treehouse. Clearly, something is upsetting her... Probably having trouble with another squirrel. [[goof around a little]] [[go find a nut!]]

You greet your sister in a very unusual manner. She turns to face you, looking you over to make sure you're ok. She then rolls her eyes and goes rushing off back inside the treehouse. She looks upset, probably due to another squirrel... You'd like to help her, but you're hungry. Time to go find a nut! [[go find a nut!]]

You fly around, keeping your eyes open for the perfect nut! [[steer left]] [[steer right]]

You steer to the left and glide deeper into the forest. Actually, you glide a little too far! Uh oh, you're coming in hot... too hot!! LOOK OUT! You steer to the right and fly through the forest! You feel so free, so alive! You close your eyes for just a brief moment, inhaling deeply. The fresh forest air fills your squirrel lungs and you can't help but smile! This... is... awesome! You open your eyes just in time to see a giant tree straight ahead! [[too late, i'm doomed...]] [[hard right!]]

You accept your fate, knowing it's too late to react. You think of your sister Jessica, that yummy acorn pie in the kitchen, your games... It all seems like just a few minutes ago... and it was. You reflect on all these things, as you go *splat!* into the tree. You refuse to give up! You dip your right shoulder and make a hard bank manuever to the right. Your reaction is *just* fast enough, as you narrowly avoid impacting the tree! You gain a tremendous burst of speed as you dive to the right. You come zooming right above the ground and crash into a pile of leaves on the forest floor. [[Whew, that was close!]]

Resting for a moment in the pile of leaves, you catch your breath. While that was really scary and you almost died, it was also a lot of fun! You pull yourself up out of the leaves and look back in the direction you came. From here, you can *just* see your own tree, way off in the distance. Wow, you flew a lot farther than you thought! Even if you do manage to find a nut out here, it's going to be a long journey getting back. Might just have to wrap it up here soon and save the trek home for the sequel... Strange thoughts fill your head, but you shake them off. Probably just a little concussed from the crash landing. Anyway, where were you... ah yes, find a nut! [[find a nut]]

You regain your composure and resume your search for the perfect nut to take home. If you find one big enough, it'll keep you satiated for the entire winter! You begin walking along and come to a fork in the path. To the left, you see a strange looking dirt hill in the distance. To the right, you notice the forest grows dark and looks dangerous. [[go left]] [[go right]]

You head left and make your way to the giant dirt hill. As you arrive, you see hundreds of ants marching back and forth and you realize... You're at **The Great Anthill!** You've heard stories of this place ever since you were little, but never seen it yourself! Wow, this is turning into a great adventure afterall. [[greet the ants]] [[turn back ->find a nut]]

You go down the path to the right. The forest seems to grow darker and colder with every step you take. It isn't long, before you're having trouble seeing the path and as you look back, you can't remember which way you even came from! [[get the heck outta' here!]] [[keep pushing onward]]

You greet the ants in the only way you know how. "Eh, whassup ants!?" Several in your vicinity suddenly stop and look toward you. They examine you as though deciding if you're a threat or not. After a moment, they resume working and ignore you. [[enter The Great Anthill]] [[turn back ->find a nut]]

You make your way straight for the entrance of The Great Anthill. As soon as you come within ten feet of the entrance, you are suddenly swarmed by ants. They come at you from all sides, dozens of them, no hundreds! They grab you and quickly carry you off, away from the entrance, tossing you to the dirt! As you hit the ground with a *thud!* you look back to see them all returning to work. It seems The Great Anthill isn't accepting any visitors at this time... [[leave ->find a nut]]

You're not digging this, time to get outta' here! You turn around and make a run for it. You immediately get lost in the darkness and have no idea where you are. You end up wandering off through the dark forest for the rest of time... Eventually you die from starvation, having never found your nut. You're not scared, so you keep moving forward. After several moments, you run smack dab into a red door, built into the base of a tree. You accidentally knock as your head *bonks!* off the door and you stumble backward. A moment passes and nothing happens. [[knock again]] [[turn back ->get the heck outta' here!]]

You bonk your head against the door to knock again. You feel a little dizzy, but suddenly the door begins to open! Your eyes widen as there, standing before you, is none other... Than your sister's boyfriend! "Huh? What're you doin' here, twerp?" he asks. [["Oh, I uh... was just uh... out for a walk and..."]] [["You made my sister sad, let's fight!"]] [["Oops, wrong house! You try coming up with some excuse, but he's not buying it. He steps out and raises his fist, before bring it down on top of your head! **BONK!** The lights grow dim as he pummels you into the dirt. You're here to avenge your sister and you let him know it! You take on an aggressive stance, ready to do battle! He immediately turns tail and scurries off, like the big coward he is. You blink your eyes, hardly able to believe it. Did you really just scare off your sister's big, bad boyfriend? Wow, all those push ups in your bedroom at night must be paying off! You begin flexing your muscles, striking numerous poses in your victory, until... You hear a screech sound coming from behind you. [[ignore it, keep flexing!]] [[turn, around, slowly]]

What was that sound? It doesn't matter! You just scared off your sister's boyfriend and you've got to savor this moment. You continue to flex and dance around, shadow boxing at the air and acting macho. You never even see the sharp talons of the owl coming, as they snatch you up! The owl grabs you and flies you high up into the canopy, before landing on a branch and looking you over. He licks his lips, deciding you look tasty, before biting your head off! You turn, around, slowly... And there, coming in at full speed, is a giant owl with his talons opened to grab you! [[duck!]] [[yelp!]]

You hit the dirt, just in time! The owl goes screeching right over your head and you feel the wind rush past! Whoa, that was close! You see the open door to your sister's boyfriend's house, maybe you can make it inside? No wonder he ran away, he wasn't scared of you, just that giant owl! You let out a yelp that sounds very un-macho. The owl snatches you up in his talons and flies high up into the sky with you. He bites your head off and feasts on your squirelly-insides. You get up and make a mad dash for the open door, diving inside just in time! The owl screeches past and the door suddenly slams shut. Your heart is thumping in your squirrel-chest and you're now face to face with your sister's boyfriend. He cracks his knuckles and prepares to pummel you. [["Wait! You lay still, doing your best dead-squirrel impression. The owl comes screeching back around and scoops you right up in his talons! He doesn't seem to care if you're alive or dead. He's hungry! He flies high up into the treetops wth you and bites off your head... He snickers, seeing how frightened you are and cracks his knuckles as he walks up to you. "Now, you're dead meat, twerp!" He pummels you into a bloody pulp! "She... she is?" He stops and his expression changes. He lowers his fists and then helps you up off the ground. "I... I didn't mean to make her sad... I'll go and apologize to her." He helps brush you off and looks you over. Seeing you're fine, he turns his attention back toward the front door. "So, how we gunna' get past that thing?" he asks, mentioning the owl. "Strange plan, but I guess we can try..." He shrugs, before opening the front door. "Alright, let's do it!" He goes charging out, waving his arms and shouting to distract the owl. You make a mad dash in the opposite direction, trying to escape and make it home. The owl screeches down and immediately snatches you up, flying up into the treetops. It lands on a branch and bites your head off, before drinking your insides. "You wanna make friends... with the owl!?" He looks at you for a long moment and then shrugs, before opening the door. "It's your funeral, good luck twerp." You step outside and look toward the skies with wide eyes and quivering lips. You hear the loud screech as you see the owl come into view and come diving down! It opens it talons, preparing to scoop you up and devour you! [["WAIT!"]] [["I wanna' be friends!"]]

You shout out, but the owl either doesn't hear you, or doesn't care. He snatches you up and flies up into the treetops, landing on a branch and eating you. The owl suddenly comes screeching to a halt and lands right in front of you. It kicks up a large plume of dust and towers over you, looking very awesome. You stare up at him and remember your plan. "M... mister owl, I'd like to be friends..." The owl cocks its head to one side and then the other, eyeing you up carefully, curiously. You stand quietly, your heart pouding in your chest. You know any moment he's just going to snatch you up and eat you. But, that moment never comes... You look up and see the owl's expression has suddenly changed. He looks, friendly. He hunches down suddenly, as if offering you a ride. [[climb aboard the owl]] [[it must be a trick, attack him!]]

You slowly and carefully, climb aboard the owl. You get settled in and can't believe this is actually happening. Surely this is some sort of trick and he's going to eat you at any moment. Maybe he's planning to fly you back to his nest and feed you to his babies!? Yes, that must be it! Just when you're having second thoughts and thinking about climbing down, the owl takes off, flying up into the sky! You grab onto his feather tightly, not wanting to fall off as you're whisked away through the forest canopy. [["Wahoo!!!"]]

You're not falling for this! You grab a nearby twig and lunge at the owl, trying to stab it in the heart! The twig doesn't penetrate at all and snaps in half. The owl's expression turns hostile and he immediately bites your head off! You losen your grip and let out a cheer of excitement, thrusting one fist into the air! This is incredible! Who knew your day would turn out like this... What an incredible journey! Then it hits you, you still need to find a nut! Your eyes focus as you look down and suddenly spot one, hanging from a tree below! "Mr. owl, can you swoop us past that tree?" The owl seems to nod and suddenly goes into a dive, swooping down toward the tree. As he lines up, you know this is your one and only chance to grab the nut! [[grab the nut!]] [[hesitate]]

You open your arms up wide, timing it just right and snatch the nut right off the tree! You and the owl go zooming off through the forest and he flies you back to your house. He lands right on the front porch railing and you climb off, hugging your giant nut. The owl looks at you curiously, as though waiting for you to say something... [["Thank you Mr. Owl, I had a wonderful time!"]] [["Uh... thanks, can you leave now?"]]

You hesitate and impact face-first into the giant nut. It knocks you off the owl's back and you plummet to the forest floor. You go *splat* on the ground and the owl comes along later and eats your remains. The owl lets out a happy chirp of some kind and smiles. He then hops off the railing and takes flight. You watch in awe, as he flies off through the forest and disappears into the distance. What an amazing adventure... [[go inside]]

The owl's once-friendly expression suddenly turns hostile at your remark. He suddenly snatches you up in his sharp talons and bites your head off. He then busts his way into your treehouse and devours your entire family. It's a terrible, bloody mess and it's all your fault. In the end, the owl takes your giant nut and flies off with it. You go inside with your giant nut, barely able to fit it through the front door. You're tired after all that excitement and consider going to bed early. [[go to bed]] [[go find your sister]]

You head off to bed and cuddle up with your giant nut. It's going to be a long winter, but at least you've got this... You drift off to sleep, but can't help but feel like you've forgotten something.
