(set:$money to 0) (set:$hasShoes to false)(set:$isHuman to false)(set:$intimidation to it +10)You hear that knock on the door, more assertive than most. Your father rushes you to the other room, urges you to stay. Tracing the lines in wooden planks you listen to the sounds beyond.
You hear a stranger's voice, and your father’s. He seems unnerved, but speaks calmly. He always does. Your mother says a few words as well. She speaks controlled, but you can hear the low warning menace in her voice. You know it too well..
Suddenly clattering, commotion. More voices. The stranger has many men with him. Chainmail. Horses. Soldiers… Your father raises his voice. He is really unnerved now. Then a loud thud, as if someone is sent flying out of the house. It is time for the soldiers to be scared.
Silence envelops the house and a gust of wind enters the room and grows into a blizzard that blows away everything. Walls, floors, ceilings. Only fields of ice remain. And in those fields a sea of corpses, with a solitary horned, clawed figure, covered in blood, standing in the middle. It glares at you.
You turn around to run away only to face a knight in golden armor. The dead men on the field rise and start shambling towards you. The golden knight lifts his sword. You close your eyes.
For a moment all you feel is nothing, but then a warm hand lands on your shoulder. You open your eyes to see a boy your age staring at you with brilliant, golden eyes. He is draped in expensive fabrics and accompanied by servants and a guard. Around him a bustling marketplace, and further away - glistening blue sea.
''Seraph:'' "Hello! My name is Seraph! Will you be my friend?" -He smiles at you showing pearl white teeth.
Suddenly a lighting flash and the golden knight is back, standing before you. Seraph is next to him, with dark silhouettes of strangers behind him.
"Monster. Monster. Monster." - The people behind start to chant..
And the golden knight pierces your heart.
[[Wake Up]]You ghasp for air and open your eyes. Late summer morning sun filters through the window behind you, warming you. Dust gently dances in the sunrays. There is your bookcase, your messy kitchen table, your night table. You are in your comfy bed. Your room.
Your room. It was just a dream.
You fall back in your bed. Your upper body feels heavy today, despite only doing paperwork the day prior. You expect the sensation to be more related to your state of mind than your body. Still… Need to get to the warehouse and finish taking stock for the castle provisions before the big day.
But before that you need to get dressed and drink the changeling potion.
Uff... the potion - you shudder at the thought - every morning a sip of that vile thing. But it's not like you have much of a choice.

[[Put on shoes]]You close your eyes, and enjoy the soft bed and cushy pillows, the warmth from the window, and the birdsong beyond it. Then you extend your hand: long fingers that end in sharp nails. Just like mother's.
You weren't always like this. As a child you looked just like any other human, but as you grew, so did the fangs, and the horns, and the claws.
It's not all bad. You are also a good deal taller than most, and strong as an ox. Can see in the dark. Read smells like a hound. Never get sick... This was a good aid in the early years, to find work, before Seraph taught you how to write and count.
A cloud passes the sun, slightly blocking its warmth. Weren't you supposed to be in a hurry to get to work?

You open the door. Birdsongs and gentle wind greets you. Your apartament is in furthest corner of the workers district, located on top of a steep hill. It is an inconvinience, but well worth the look that greets you each time exiting the house.
The capilal of the Duchy of Adria, Alsa Caelora, stands in full glory before you, decorated for today's celebrations, and beyond it, the glistening gulf of Lemronto.
[[Go to warehouse]]It's still littered with leftovers of yesterday's dinner. The amount of food you can consume is staggering. Come to think of it, mother also always ate enough for four, but she preferred much more meat in her diet. Almost all of it, frankly...
[[Back]]It's bursting with books. "Life and lineage of Amirelli Gionalli", "Theory of Supply and Demand, threatese from Merchant Guild of Embercairn", "Geography of the North, Askaria's rise", and al lot, a lot of adventure stores.
Seraph brought them all, saying that these are the best books to learn reading letters, but by now you know that he just liked them and wished to discuss them with someone who would listen.
[[Back]]You open the first drawer, and there it is, a tiny, unassuming bottle, filled with transparent liquid. Next to it also sits your poach with Askarian currency: auras.

[[Back]] After following a precipitous path from your house, you evenually get on a road, laid with cobblestones. There you meet other people, all walking the same direction. Most dressed in clean whine shirts and robes. Some in carriages, some on horses, some walking, all bearing gifts to the god and the new lord of Adria.
You listen to the talks around you. Most are just curious what the future will bring. Many speak well of the new duke to be.
You do not share the enthusiasm.
Sorath Araquiel Suncrest always had some sort of axe to grind with his youngest brother, Seraph, but since he couldn't do much against his little brother without risking the duke's ire, he settled for Seraph's common born best friend - you.
So in short you were not bringing him any gifts on his homecoming party.
As you reach the central district the crowd thickens. Everything is decorated, flowers line the pots, colorful flags hang from gates and railings, and guard presence is prominent, evaluating each passer by with a watchful eye. You change your direction to visit the factory port district. There you will find auntie's Ettels warehouse.
You first met Ettel, after being rescued from the street, and taken in as an aide for the castle. Back then she was your superior, but with the care she displayed for all the children in the castle, Ettel gained the affectionate moniker "aunty".
Many years later Ettel's husband got the warehouse building via inheritance, and the hardworking lady jumped at turning it into a business. Because she knew you could read and count, as well as carry heavy loads, she offered you a job.
The warehouse's gates stand open, and porters are stacking boxes into carts.
[[Enter the warehouse]]You enter the tailors shop. It's rather busy.
Shopkeeper: "Good morning! I'll be with you in a moment. Menwhile please feel free to take a look at what we have on display!" - he gives some garments to a woman, who proceeds to moveto the fitting room. A man, sitting on a bench by the entrance exhails. Looks like he is accompanying the woman, and is regretting that decidion right now.
Shopkeeper: "And if anything chafes, we can adjust it right away." He calls after the woman. - "And what may I do for YOU?" - he turns towards you with a smile, but you notice him checking out your current clothes. - "We offer a wide selection as well as custom tailorwork. We ARE quite pricey, but that's only because you pay for the highest quality."

Any moment you fell a beast, hoping that the tide just might turn, one of the demons appear. The creatures drop one human after another, followed by the shreaks of dying as they themselves shrug off sword slashes and fire as if those were mere inconviniences.
Your gaze focuses on one of the demons that just pulled it's jagged sword out of a guardsmens belly. The man shreaks like a banshee at the motion, then grows still, spirit departing from him. The demon locks eyes with you and begins its approach. You grip your sword and try to blink away the sweat dirpping down from your forehead.
The creature walks slow, then breaks into a stride. A slash, and you lock your swords. The blow rings through your forearms. A few slashes you manage to avoid but the last one connects and draws blood from your thigh. You step onto that leg and whince. You are much weaker in your human form, you are tired, and now also losing blood. The beast attacks again and you manage to stop the blow. Almost.
Yor own fingers disobey you and the sword goes flying from your hands.
[[Change form]]
[[Stay human]]But the victory is short lived. You see Seraphs eyes go blank and he collapses. You rush over to him and before kneeling notice another ship in the port and creatures pouring from it. Holesness falls onto you like a heavy lid, and when you look around you know you are not alone.
- Sun almighty, do not cast a shade onto your followers... Deliver us from evil. - a guardsman, caked in blood and dirt, silently begins to pray.
Just that moment first of the reinforcements from the devilish beasts appear, and the tired men closest to them engage in battle. You grip your sword with a grim determination. Steady your ragged breath... And prepare for the next fight.
Just as you do a portal appears, and professor Zemfizohch steps out of it. She takes a moment to steady herself and take in her surroundings, then notices you and Seraph. Before you manage to utter a word she drops a scroll on the ground, grabs your hand and puts the other on Seraph and whisks you away via another teleport.
The last thing you see is the great city of Alsa Caelora engulfed in flames.Grim determination overcomes you. Either you stay human and hope to survive this fight, or you relay on your other form and maybe win. And then get cut down by your allies. The beast swings at you. You dodge the attack and lunge for your sword, but the jump is just a bit too short, and your sword stays out of your reach. Sensing a shadow looming over you, you turn to your attcker, who is ready to end you. Damn! The sword comes down... And then stops.
The demon flies into air screaming in it's foreign tongue. You grab your sword and stand, only to observe around you all enemies dangling in the air, screaming. Seraph is next to you, standing with arms raised, a brilliand glow radiating from them. He screams and the beasts begin to screech as well. For a moment they seem to be locked in an invisible fight, then the creatures explode in a red mist, raining a drizzle of blood over the battlefield.
Time stops and for a second silence envelops the fighters. Seraph looks at you, a weak smile playing on his lips. He is standing with soldiers dropped leaning heavily on his sword. He saved your life. Men's cheers rise you from this moment.

"The duke and ducessa approach! Make way! Make way!"
Guards part the crowd and stand in two rows, guarding the road between. After a while a gilded carrage approaches with cavalry in tow. Guardsmen surround it, a squire opens the door. The duke, Amaros Araquiel Suncrest appears first, then extends his hand to his wife, Ahiah. Both nobles salute the gathered crowd and make their way to the waterfront. Some time passes waiting with people murmuring in anticipation, all looking at the approaching carrack.
Finally the ornamented ship "Valiant" slides into the port. As it touches the fenders, fanfares sound. Servants pull ladders next to it the moment the vessel has fully stopped. When it is done the Suncrests make their way on board.
Guards on ship salute them as a small group await the nobles. If not for the Suncrest insignia on his chest you would not have recognized Seraph among the group.
The skinny teen is gone and in his stead a young, well built man standing tall. He greets his parents with a bow and a smile, they return the gesture, then Ahiah embraces him, Amaros places his hand onto Seraphs shoulder. [[Join the procession]] You walk among many others, (if:$candleLit is true)[guarding your candle from the wind and pilgrims next to you, ]joining the procession. In the distance temple bell tower rings, many people stand on the sides of the road, cheering when the royals pass. The entire city was decorated for this event, but the road you are on is something else: large golden banners flicker in the wind, flower garlands line the geometry of buildings, preformers sing and dance on street corners.
You slowly move forward uphill untill you reach Jahoel round square. In the center of it, the chief sun temple of Alsa Caelora, it's golden spire gleaming in the sunlight.
At the temple the procession dissolves, each person finding a place in the large square. The preast who led all gives away his banner to other servants of the God who awaited him and the royals on the steps of the temple. They wait while most of the pilgrims have entered the square, conversing in hushed whispers. You notice the duchess fiddling around Seraph's clothes and hair, trying to place everything perfectly. The whole place is abuzz with people conversing.
After a while the head preast speaks in a jucy, loud baritone, that hushes all other voices in the crowd. It is a prayer in old Askarian, so you can make out only a few words. It is a prayer for the duchy and rulers, both past and future. He speaks for quite some time. When he finishes, a choir of prestesses begin to sing and the priest takes a small, golden chalice. Seraph steps forward, kneels, and bows deeply. The priest takes gold dust from the chalice and sprinkles it on Seraphs head. Then he places his hand on him and the choir stops. He begins to pray again, this time in common:
Priest: "To the Lord among us."
Crowd: "Mastria!"
Priest: "To His eye in the sky."
Crowd: "Mastria!"
Priest: "To His blood in us."
Crowd: "Mastria!"
Priest: "Glorious spirit, creator of all life, we ask of you in your name. Behold this golden eyed man, behold your child! Grant him Your strength so he might repel the evil forces. Grant him Your wisdom, so he may lead us. Grant him Your love, so he may prosper!"
Crowd: "Mastria!"
Seraph rises and walks to the votive stands by the temple enterance and leaves his candle there, then joins the preast and enters the temple. His parents and the other priests and pristesses follow. After a while common folk begin to walk up to the stands and leave their candles.
(if:$candleLit is true)[[Leave your candle]]
[[Wait]]You again line up in a que, this time to leave your candle. (set:$compassion to it +1)When it is done you return to the crowd waiting for the royal's reappearnce.
[[Wait]] A bit of time passes, before Seraph and his family returns on the temple steps. He has a short conversation with his parents and the priest, then steps forward and addressess everyone in the square.
Seraph: "Citizens of Adria! Dear guests!"
It is a much more deeper voice, you almost do not recognize it.
Seraph: "So much time has passed, but you are still as noble, as beautiful as ever! I have travelled from the capital of Golden spires, to the great wall that protect us from the frozen wastes and the horde beyond it, but still my heart only longed for one place. The banks of Valvano, the golden fields of Triessa, the streets of Alsa Caelora called to me! I rejoice for my return, and hope you shall join me, for today we celebrate, and tomorrow I shall begin my ascention to the throne. I am honored and humbled, and ready to bring a new age that promotes our culture, economy and people!"
While he spoke, the guards have parted the crowd, to allow the family to leave. You stand right at the edge of the path. The Suncrests begin to leave, walking slowly, interacting with the people adressing them. Soon they reach the place where you stand.

As they grasp for you, they catch only thin air. You dart past them and into the main hall. Nobles give you way. People push to the sides of the hall, unsure of your intentions. In the middle stays a lone figure, unmoving - Seraph. He watches you in disbelief. You slow down and the guards catch up to you, grabbing your hands, kicking your legs to force you to kneel.
