Hey! Hey you! Yes, YOU.
You look like a spry young buck, hardy, ready for adventure...
ARE YOU?
[[Ummm, yes?|Start Adventure]]
[[Why are talking to me, go away!|Lame City]]
SO YOU WANT TO DO A THING, EH?!
Go forth, you do that [[thing!|An Introduction]]
[[I have no idea what is going on, what is happening right now?|Questions]]This is a Twine. Gist is that it's a text-based game. There's lots of cool things you can do with it, but in this case, it is pretty well presenting you with a linear 'tour.' Remember that you can click on pictures as well!
Everything should work well enough, but drop me a line if it doesn't. Also, spelling may be atrocious at points. The lack of spellcheck is one of the downsides of the tool.
Enjoy!

Summer 2015THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT!
Come along, my young friend, no time to pack your bags, we're going on an [[adventure!|Ocean View]]
You turn to walk away from the strange man and accidentally trip into [[a hole.|Game Over]]<img src="http://www.mobygames.com/images/shots/l/310686-8bit-killer-windows-screenshot-game-over.png" width="1000" height="600" alt="whomp whomp">(if: $visited_icy is "yes")[You return to your ship and set sail once again, disappointed. (if: $visited_algonquins is "yes")[You return to your ship pleased with your adventure, and the wares that the Algonquin people gave you. You happily crawl into your bed, only to be [[rudely awakened|Awakening]] some time later.]
(if: $visited_canal is "yes")[You make it back to your ship, float out into the bay a bit, and return to discover quite a lot has [[changed.|Thomas Clark]]]
(if: $visited_clark is "yes")[ You head back to the shore and decide to see if just going on your ship changes the time. It seemingly does not, so you set sail around the bay, and return, hoping Mr. Clark had some luck with his [[farm.|CEF Opening]]]
(if: $visited_CEF is "yes")[Upon returning to your ship, you struggle to find it in the vast array of people that have appeared on the shore. Men in miltary dress run across the beach, apparently training. You slink to your ship and somehow the crew manages to maneuver you out into the bay. You breathe a sigh of relief and pause for a silent moment to think of what a close call that had been. Upon returning to the shore once again, the relief [[fades.|Ottawa Alt]]

You walk off the ship and find yourself to be very, *very* cold. You look around and see nothing but ice.
You appear to have discovered the Late Wisconsinan glaciation... Which you thought occurred over 20 000 years ago.[[1|Citations?]]
Maybe you should [[go back to the ship?|Ocean View]]
<img src="http://www.cosmographicresearch.org/Images/glacial_maximum_map2.jpg" width="600" height="600" alt="Icy">(set: $visited_algonquins to "yes")You once again step off the boat, and you have a strange sense of deja vu come over you. You shrug it off, and continue walking.
The area around you is heavily wooded, you can't see beyond the edge of the tree line.
As you squint to see if you can make out anything, suddenly people burst from the forest. They are dressed simply, and carry furs with them, which they very shortly try to ply you with in exchange for the muskets you have aboard the ship.
The people are very kind, and invite you and your crew to dine with them, where, with much drawing in the ground and gesturing do they explain that they are called "Algonquins," and that the river opposite the one you came in on is called "Kiji Sibi."[[2|Citations?]]
They say they have been here since time immemorial, and that they range all along and between the area formed by these two rivers converging.
You stay with the Algonquins for some time, but eventually decide that you must return [[back home.|Ocean View]]

You are baffled, but can hear the sounds of construction coming from nearby and are driven to [[inspect|Canal]] what is happening.(set: $visited_canal to "yes")
You follow the sounds and come upon what appears to be the construction of a canal. Men are hauling stones and seem to be creating a dam. One walking near you mutters something about "third damn time best do the trick."[[3|Citations?]]
Walking along further, you see a map designating that an aqueduct was intended to be constructed several miles ahead, but a hastily scribbled note seems to suggest that won't be happening.[[4|Citations?]]
Proceeding even further, you discover why perhaps that note had been made. Around where the aqueduct was intended to be was instead a rather large lake. The area surrounding this lake seems oddly temperate compared to the rest of the area, which is quite pleasant. Everyone seems quite busy everywhere you look, though you do note that up on the ridge above the lake, there seems to be some farming occurring.
The area looks to be developing quite a bit, and you would like to see what happens [[next.|Ocean View]]

The canal that had been being constructed last time you were here is now complete. You do not linger, instead choosing to hike up the hill you spotted earlier to inspect what is happening there.
You discover a rather dingy looking farm, and speak to a man named Thomas Clark. He appears to be quite wealthy, but looks rather dejected as he explains that he's actually trying to sell his farm, but nobody was interested. He mumbles something about how perhaps his ad is a little misleading as you say your goodbyes. <img src=" http://web.library.mcgill.ca/countyatlas/Images/Properties/car-p-tclark.jpg" width="750" height="550" alt="Clark's farm">Climbing up the hill once again, you are shocked to see a small crowd of people clustered around a man on a podium. Straining, you hear him talk about the 'Central Experimental Farm' and how he is so honored and pleased to have been named director of Experimental Farms.6 You see Mr. Clark standing far off to the side, and sidle up to speak to him.
He explains that the government purchased his farmland along with several others to create an expansive research farm, in order to best explore production techniques and breeds that would flourish in the harsh Canadian climate.7 He was glad to see it getting used, the farm had been neglected ever since he had been elected reeve.8
Peering about, it seems that besides this podium and group of people, nothing has really changed since last time you came here; it can't have been more than 15 years since you last were here. You grit your teeth and prepare for the long march back to the ship, hoping something interesting will have happened by the time you [[return.|CEF]]

It seems deliberate and you enjoy the walk up the hill more than you ever have[[9|Citations?]] After hiking up the hill yet again, you are pleased to discover that plenty has changed at the farm since you were last here.
As you look about, what used to be solid fields of one of two crops is now split up into what appears to be hundreds of different crops. In addition, there are so many more buildings now: a barn, a conservatory, a greenhouse, several houses that appear to be housing animals, as well as several other buildings that seemed to house people.[[10|Citations?]]
The farm is bustling with activity, and as you look out upon the rest of the town, you find it too has expanded rapidly. You decide that perhaps a [[brief walking tour|Tour]] is in order.

The largest liberties were taken with the final scenes, with Ottawa on fire. There was actually a fire in the Ottawa-Hull area - in 190`0.`
It was devestating, but clearly the area recovered. In this regard I took some liberties in A] Moving this fire back about 20 years and B] Taking this in a counterfactual direction to imagine that the flames *hadn't* been stopped. What if the entirety of Ottawa had have burned to the ground? Would it still be the capital of Canada? We'll never really know, but it's an interesting thing to think about!
