Typing Japanese on a US Keyboard
To type in Japanese using a US keyboard, follow these steps:
- Install the Japanese language settings on your device.
- You will see an indicator (either A or あ) on the bottom right of your taskbar near the clock.
- To switch between English and Japanese modes, press ALT + ~.
- When in Japanese mode, there are two input modes: Hiragana and Katakana.
- To switch to Katakana, press Left ALT + CAPS LOCK.
- To switch to Hiragana, press Left CTRL + CAPS LOCK.
- To input text, type in Romanji using your keyboard.
- The Japanese input system will convert it to the corresponding Hiragana or Katakana characters.
- You can also type in Hiragana and Press F7 to convert it to Katakana.
- You can also type in Katakana and Press F6 to convert it to Hiragana.
- If you want to change the word into a Kanji, press Space.
- To end a word, press Enter.
Note: Most Japanese speakers do not use direct Kana input on Kana notated keyboards as it can be slow. Instead, they use Romanji input and rely on the Japanese input system to convert it to the appropriate characters.
