/*You can add/change whatever you want*/10 years.
It has been ten years since you were made Queen. It feels like an eternity has passed, or no time at all. You feel changed, and yet here you stand, just like that day, greeting the adoring masses that cry out for you.
The warmth in their eyes barely manages to reach the surface of the dark hole that has grown inside you. Nonetheless, you greet back with the grace everyone expects of you, your husband standing by your side as a solid, but sometimes oppressive, presence.
At the cries of, “//long live the Queen!//” you bow your head and return to the castle.

Carefully timed it
So let me go
And dive into the waves below</center>

<center>TRIGGER WARNINGS
mention of miscarriage and abortion, mention of pregnancy, sexually suggestive content
1</center>When the day ends and the festivities are over, the King takes you to his bed like almost every other night. He is unusually gentle with you, however. Perhaps, he remembers how much effort he went through to find you ten years ago.
It had been a desperate gamble on your part. Obviously he looked fascinating in his Crown Prince attire, and he was curated and polite, not at all bad on the eyes. Still, all you could feel when you danced with him was painful anxiety coiling around your lungs, the dreadful awareness that he would be your only chance to escape the hell you were trapped in.
You knew that, however the outcome with the Crown Prince, after the ball your sisters would have been married off by your stepmother. The inheritance from your father would have barely managed to cover two dowries, never mind a third, you would have been left a slave in your mother’s house. Starved, clothed in rags.
Covered in ash.
<center>4</center>So, driven by cold despair, you had done everything you could in the, admittedly strained, hope to catch the Prince’s attention. It had worked.
Now, ten years later, you are lying in his bed like the very first night you spent at the castle.
His hands caressing your sides as he moves over you feel almost careful. Rather more affectionate than usual.
- [[It doesn’t matter whether you enjoy the contact or not. This was your only chance to escape and you took it.|5][$ch1 = true]]
- [[Some night, you even come to slightly enjoy it. When he is gentle and not driven by frustration or hurry.|5][$ch1 = false]]
<<if $ch1>>You bear it as always, in silence.<<else>>Those times are few and far between, though.<</if>>
When he is done, and both of you glisten with sweat, he traces delicately his hand over your lower abdomen.
“I cannot wait to see your stomach swollen once again.”
Something inside you turns into stone. Your skin feels submerged in ice cold water. You don’t even register what he says to you after that. You are focused solely on the slithering discomfort that has gradually taken hold of all your limbs, starting from your midsection.
//Another pregnancy.//
//Another-//

24/7 baby machine
So he can live out his picket fence dream
It’s not an act of love if you make her</center>
<h4>Labour - Paris Paloma</h4>
<center>7</center>
A pained groan distracts you from your spiralling thoughts. You turn to look at the King’s face. He stretches his arms, but clearly his muscles are tense and aching.
He looks at you with a slight plea you are familiar with, “could you…?”
“Of course.”
As Crown Prince, your husband was enamoured with you. Even if it was due to years of starvation, he could not stop adoring your small wrists, feet and ankles. He saw how milky light your skin was – no matter if the night of the ball was your first time out of the house in months. It was only after he was crowned, a few years into the marriage, that he started to notice the scars.
He asked you to be more covered and wear gloves in public, for your hands suffered the worst of it. Scarred, calloused. Burned to the point where your fingers became almost insensitive.
<center>8</center><center>
All day everyday
Therapist mother maid
Nymph then a virgin
Nurse then a servant
Just an appendage, live to attend him //(==THEM==)//
So that he //(==THEY==)// never lifts a finger</center>
<h4>Labour - Paris Paloma</h4>
<center>9</center>
You guide him on his stomach, straddling his naked back. He might not like presenting a Queen with calloused hands, but he found that in private he likes how strong and practiced your hands feel.
You massage his sore muscles in silence, pressing down on his shoulders and arms. You work on his stiff neck and hands almost mindlessly, the process very familiar. It is far from the first time the King has posed the same request.
You hardly have anything else to occupy your mind, and time, after all. Your only obligation as Queen is to provide heirs to him. He didn’t assign you other duties, nor does he allow you to visit any other place than your quarters or the gardens, in fear you might be harmed. You serve him, he is you whole world.
“Sleep with me tonight.”
And you do. Obedient, because it’s all you’ve learnt to be.
<center>10</center><center>
The calloused skin on my hands is cracking
If our love ends would that be a bad thing?
As the silence haunts our bed chamber
You make me do too much labour</center>
<h4>Labour - Paris Paloma</h4>
<center>11</center>When you wake up, hours later, the room is much colder. You shiver when you slip away from the warm blanket, delicately because you don’t want to wake your husband, and take a few steps on the cool floor. You check the fireplace.
“Is the fire gone?” the King asks groggily.
“Yes. I will call a maid to restart it.”
“You could do it yourself.”
You can’t breathe. Humiliation washes over you as if you were submerged in freezing water. You can almost feel the taste of ash, as you cough it, as you look at your skin stained grey.
//Cinderella//, your mind chants in the degrading voice of your stepmother. You hadn’t thought about it in a long time.
<center>12</center>Some part of you wonders why, if your husband loved you, would he be so utterly cruel. You steel yourself, then you walk out the door and call for someone to tend to the fireplace.
The King leaves soon after, a busy day ahead of him. On the other hand, as always, all that is left to do to you is stay, docile, in you chambers.
When the servants are about to tidy the room, you ask them to leave. In the now empty chamber, left to its own mess, you sit down on your unmade bed, your hands resting on your stomach.
An oppressive sense of nausea grows. And grows.
<center>13</center><center>
If we had a daughter
I’d watch and could not save her
[...]
She’d do what you taught her
She’d meet the same cruel fate
So now I’ve gotta run
So I can undo this mistake
At least I’ve gotta try</center>
<h4>Labour - Paris Paloma</h4>
<center>14</center>Weeks later, you are shivering, your clothes wet with sweat and blood. You grit your teeth when another cramp comes, then you slump exhausted back on the floor.
- [[It isn’t the first time you are losing a baby. It does not hurt any less.|15][$ch2 = true]]
- [[The tea you took earlier is working. Like all the previous times, you just have to wait to be empty once again.|15][$ch2 = false]]
<<if $ch2>>This is your duty as Queen, but as much as you try to uphold it, you can’t. In the ten years you have been married, not once could you carry a pregnancy to its end.
Still, the King keeps trying. But you are tired, and sometimes you wonder how much you can bear before your body gives out on you. Then again, you thought the same when you worked all day long with barely any food to keep you standing.
What changed is simply the kind of labour that you are required to do.<<else>> It wasn’t easy to acquire the herbs, with how restricted your movements are. Still, as all the previous times you have resorted to this, desperation made you resourceful. You may have no control over most of your life, but this, at least, you can do.
It does not matter the pain you put your body through, the danger when you risk poisoning yourself accidentally, nor the punishment you would face should anyone discover you.
You don’t want to put into the world a baby that will live like you. That will know no rest and no escape.<</if>>
When the day ends and you manage to stand, you wash your face in the basin. With a cloth, you dry your skin and then you stand still, your exhausted gaze locked on your mirrored image in the settling water.
Your skin is sickly pale, in the same way it was when you went without rest for days; and your eyes are bloodshot, busted capillaries in the white sclerae.
//10 years later, and you look as exhausted as you did then.//
<center>16</center><center>
The capillaries in my eyes are bursting
If our love died, would that be the worst thing?
For somebody I thought was my saviour
You sure make me do a whole lot of labour</center>
