[[Start->The Beginning]]The musical lyrics of Shalamar's "Make That Move" effectively enterains you as you hop off the bus and onto the cool, dampened concrete of the sidewalk that leads to your small but quaint suburban home, situated nicely within the vast southern suburbs of Chicago.
The streets of Thornton were rather vacant today, as the news forecast heavy rain that evening and night. Off in the distance you can faintly make out the silhouette of the newly constructed Sears Tower skyscraper. The newest addition to Chicago's already celebrated skyline.
Raindrops begin to descend from the quikcly darkening sky. As the bus begins to pull away from your stop, you hastily begin to embark on the rest of your journey home.
You stuff your walkman safely underneath your coat while also trying to maintain your grip on your flimsy umbrella. It had begun it's grand attemps to take flight since the wind had begun to considerably intensify.
Taking in the ever darker and more threatening sky, you [[once again, pick up your speed towards home.->Decision 1]]
(Set: $endegg to 8)Suddenly, you hear two frantic young voices calling out. Rounding the next corner you find two high-school-aged kids; they seem to be looking for something desperately. You cannot quite remember their names, but you have seen them around the neighborhood before.
"Benjiiii! Come back, buddy!" calls out the young man of the pair.
"Benji! Where are you?!" follows up the young woman.
It never hurts to be friendly. [[You ask if they need help.->Decision 2]]
[[You leave them to their search.->Decision 1: Ignore]] The rain is picking up, and you have a hot bath, dinner, and some TV to look forward to."Is there a problem? Are you guys ok?" you ask the pair.
As you come closer, you confirm your inital theory. They both look to be around the ages of sixteen or seventeen years old. The young girl who appears to be from Asian descent and has long, thick, dark hair and complimentary brown eyes.
The boy standing next to her is considerably paler in comparison, but with similar dark hair and dark eyes. Standing there, he towers over both you and her.
"We were walking my dog and he just suddenly started going crazy; I think because of the storm. When he started barking and leaping fowards on his line, he yanked it too hard for me to keep holding on and then took off! We haven't been able to find him anywhere," she exclaimed. Concern was written all over her face and you noticed that her voice caught in her throat, as if she was trying to hold back tears. "We've been searching for him for, for nearly over an hour now, but we haven't seen him at all," she added, lowering her eyes to the ground with sorrow.
At that moment the rain started coming down in buckets, harder and harder. A crack of lighting flashed over your heads, and moments later a loud roar of thunder followed, loud enough to send resonating vibrations througout your entire chest.
The girl shifts her gase up to to the sky worriedly, but then quickly looks back down to you before asking, "Would you potentially, by any chance, be willing to help us find him?" Her eyes look pleadingly at you as her mouth formed the sentence.
"I'm really sorry," you say, "but [[I really don't think I have the time or energy->Decision 2: No]] today to help you look for him.My umbrella is about to give up the ghost, too. But, if I happen to come across him, I will be sure to give you guys a call."
"This storm is quickly getting worse and worse. I dont think any of us should be out here looking for him right now," you tell them. [["We should call for professional help."->Decision 2: Get Help]]
[["Of course I will!"-> Decision 3]] you say. "We can't leave poor benji out in this storm by himself for too long. The poor guy's probably already terrified out of his mind."You make it the last few blocks back to your home without to much extra soakage, though your shoes are useless for the next few days. Dumping all of the clothes on the floor of the bathroom, you fill the tub, watching the steaming water with giddy delight, while simultaneously hoping the rain doesn't do the same thing to your basement. After soaking luxuriously in the water, you pop some left-overs into the microwave (a truly wonderful invention, even thirty-five years after it first hit the market) and get ready to stuff yourself in front of the tube.
After finishing the daily grind of channel surfing and finding nothing really new, you flop into bed, and cuddle under the covers.
With the house now quiet, you can hear the roar of what must almost be a biblical downpour outside the window, so loud it almost drowned out the occaisional cracks of thunder. Your basement is definitely going to flood, like so many others in Chicago. That's what you get for building on marshes and swamps.
[[The rain eventually lulls you to sleep->END: Lone Survivor]], your dreams haunted by desperate cries and phantoms always remaining just out of view. The next morning you open you eyes to the sun streaming in through your window. The sky is bright and clear, and the city looks as it it's almost glittering in the sun, in wake of last night's storm.
You make yourself a hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs and toast and then plop down down on your couch, situating yourself in a comfy position to watch the morning news, as you do every Satuday.
The news starts off with the usual news anchor banter and topics to "stay tuned for because they're coming up next." When the news returns, the program almost immediatly cuts to their headline story for the morning, launching into their report.
//"People all across the city of Chicago are waking up this morning to a flooded basement. Officials are saying this could have been one of the worst storms Chicago has seen in a long time..." The news anchor chatters on as your mind wanders out through the window and into into the beautiful, sunny and warm weather. It's not long, though, until the news anchor's voice suddenly captures your attention again. "In other heartbreakingly sad news, two teenagers were found dead this morning. Their bodies, along with the body of a dog, were discovered inside one of the newly constructed branches of the underground Deep Tunnel System. The tunnels were, in fact, designed to prevent any flooding from occuring, but officials say the construction is not far enough along to handle such a downpour," she adds. "The two teens, Aidan Whitemore and Shui Clark, were believed to have wandered into the tunnels looking for their dog, Benji." She pauses for a moment before concluding with, "All our hearts, here at the station, go out to Aidan and Shui's parents during this devistating time."//
The TV cuts to commercial before you have time to fully process the news that was just uncovered.
You feel you stomach sinnks inside you; maybe you could have helped those two, [[Aidan and Shui.->The End]](Set: $endegg -= 1)(if: $endegg is >= 0)[[[The End]]](else:)[[[Still Here?]]]You make it the last few blocks back to your home without too much extra soakage, though your shoes are useless for the next few days. Dumping all of the clothes on the floor of the bathroom, you fill the tub, watching the steaming water with giddy delight, while simultaneously hoping the rain doesn't do the same thing to your basement. After soaking luxuriously in the water, you pop some left-overs into the microwave (a truly wonderful invention, even thirty-five years after it first hit the market in 1946) and get ready to stuff yourself in front of the tube.
After finishing the daily grind of channel surfing and finding nothing really new, you flop into bed, and cuddle under the covers.
With the house now quiet, you can hear the roar of what must almost be a biblical downpour outside the window, so loud it almost drowned out the occasional cracks of thunder. Your basement is definitely going to flood, like so many others in Chicago. That's what you get for building on marshes and swamps.
[[The rain iventially lulls you to sleep, your dreams are sweet and untroubled.->END: Lone Survivor]]You don't wait for them to respond, instead you immedietly bolt in the direction of the nearest payphone. You dial 911 as fast as your frozen fingers will allow.
When the dispatcher picks up, you begin to hastily explain to them what's going on and that, with the storm getting worse and worse, Benji, the dog, could be anywhere by now.
It seems like only moments after you hang up, when a squad car pulls up to the side of the road near where you're standing.
"Did you call about the dog?" They ask.
You nod and begin to tell them what you told the dispatcher on the phone. "It's their dog, though," you finish and turn around to point at the two teens behind you, only to freeze halfway around as you stare at the empty spot where they both had been standing, only moments ago.
Your blood begins to run cold as you realize what their absence means. [[They were gone. Nowhere to be seen.->END: Lone Survivor]]Distant barking leads your little group to the old Thornton Quarry. What was before a bare stone pit is now a construction site filled with large machinary. Far on the quarry wall is a large, round opening. This must be where they are constructing a portion of the new Deep Tunnel System the city is hemorrhaging money on. You remember some advertisements for neighborhood meetings complaining about the possible ramifications; something about dumping storm water and excess sewage into their neighborhood.
Another series of barks draw your little group's attention to the sleek, four-legged shadow trotting towards the large black hole... situated behind the linked fence cordoning off the construction site.
You tell the two it's technically illegal to break into a construction site. How did the dog even find a way in there?
The three of you [[try to lure the dog->Decision 5]] back out by calling and waving some treats the kids had in their pocket.
//No one will know, so you might as well [[find a way into the construction site->Decision 4]] and get the dog,// you think. After searching along the fence, you find a padlocked entrance. Disappointingly, your lock-picking skills are nill.
(Set: $lockstrength to 8)
Thinking fast, [[you pick up a nearby rock.->Decision 4: Rock It]]
There is no help for it, [[looking around may yield an appropriate tool.->Decision 4: Search]]As if just to spite you, the dog is uninterested and disappears behind more of the equipment, closer towards the tunnel entrance in the wall, which appears decidedly creepy in the stormy atmosphere.
You tell the two, they are on their own from there on out. [[You need to get home.->Decision 5: Leave Behind]]
You reasure the two that the dog will come back on its own, and [[convince them to hurry back home->Decision 5: Reassurance]] before the rain gets even worse. They plead with you to stay and help them! The rain is coming down in torrents now, and your flimsy umbrella isn't holding up very well; theirs, too, look like they will soon give up the battle.
[[You decide it really is better to get home->Decision 2: No]]. After all, the weather is getting so bad it's sure to flood your basement and possibly other places!
You realize, though, it may be better to [[make sure the kids are alright->Decision 4]], so you decide to stay and help. You make it the last few blocks back to your townhouse without too much extra soakage, though your shoes are useless for the next few days. Dumping all of the clothes on the floor of the bathroom, you fill the tub, watching the steaming water with giddy delight. After soaking luxuriously in the water, you pop some left-overs into the microwave (a truly wonderful invention, even thirty-five years after it first hit the shelves in 1946) and get ready to stuff yourself in front of the telli.
After finishing the daily grind of channel surfing and finding nothing really new, you flop into bed, and cuddle under the covers.
With the house now quiet, you can hear the roar of what must almost be a biblical downpour outside the window, so loud it almost drowned out the occaisional cracks of thunder.
[[The rain eventually lulls you to sleep, your dreams are sweet and untroubled.->END: The Dog Dies]]A few weeks later, you meet the two on the same street, walking home from the two hour CTA trip from downtown. It's raining again.
The young woman sees you and says, "Benji never came back!" Her face is set in an unhappy frown.
The young man beside her has tears beginning to brim over, spilling down his cheeks as he adds, "He drowned in the tunnels. The construction crew found him..."
[[Guilt rakes through you as you realize that their dog was probably dead because, you weren't willing to help them look.->The End 2]]With what feels like a great amount of fource, you slam the rock against the top of the lock.
But, alas... After an indignant rattle, the lock settles back into place, unharmed and unopened.
(Set: $lockstrength -= 1)
There is no help for it, [[looking around may yield an appropriate tool.->Decision 4: Search]]
(if: $lockstrength >= 0)[But! You do not give up that easily! [[You bash the lock again.->Decision 4: Rock It]]](else:)[[[Finally the lock breaks and falls to the floor!->Construction Site]]]After a depressingly long search in the rain, the girl spots a toolbox abandoned next to a boulder. Perhaps forgotten during a lunch break?
Cracking it open, you find a mini crowbar (bet you didn't know they even made them that small)! Hurrying back to the the padlock, you fumble but finally manage to crack the padlock open. Construction companies sure are cheap on security.
You drop the lock and crowbar near the entrance, and [[push open the hinged piece of fence!->Construction Site]]Stepping onto the restricted construction site feels a little like breaking holy ground, but really there isn't much else to see from before. Massive pieces of machinary, trucks, and equipment used to dig the huge holes into the limestone bedrock, piles of stone, gravel, and sand all lay scattered across the site.
Smaller boxes of tools are positioned here and there. Off in the distance, hidden partly behind a giant excavator, you can make out the construction management building, positioned on higher ground.
Looking amongst all the rubbish, though, Benji the dog remained out of sight. Slowly, you make your way through the dirt-themed obstacle course, moving closer towards the massive opening in the quarry wall. That thing must be over 20 feet in diameter!
[[As you move closer->Decision 6]], you think you can hear whimpering coming from inside the tunnel system. You move in closer until you reach the giant opening, towering and stretching far out into the darkness in front of you. The whimpering and barking is definitely coming from somewhere inside.
You look at the two kids and they look back at you. Their faces are wearing the same expression as yours is.
"Look, we haven't been properly introduced yet. My name is Aidan and this is Shui, my neighbor. Benji is an amazing dog, please help us get him back out?" the young man, Aidan entreats.
[[You tell them sorry, but no->END: Lone Survivor]]. You draw the line at going into creepy huge passages meant to flush out large amounts of sewage and storm water from the city, especially not during a storm.
You tell them your name in return and [[agree to go into the tunnels->Decision 7]] like a hero in one of those unrealistic fairytales.Upon entering into the gloom you quickly realize you will get nowhere without some form of light lighting the way in front of you. Another option is stumbling around in the dark, of course.
[[You fear no darkness->Decision 7: In The Dark]], and lead the charge into the deep unknown.
The sensible thing, of course, is to [[look around for some form of light.->Decision 7: Light Up]]The passage is still as sickly green, damp and cold as before. A mixed aroma of mold and moisture is starting to become all that is noticable in the gloomy tunnel.
(Set: $Flood -= 1)
As you follow Shui down the tunnel passage and the water levels are decreasing, you decide that she did, in fact know where she was going.
Following her proabably saved you a ton of time!
(if: $Flood >= 0)[[[You Keep following Shui down the tunnel.->Twists and Turns]]](else:)[[[The water is rising way to fast! All you can do is run!->END: Doomsday]]]The passage is still as strangely green, damp, and cold as before.
In an instant, an overwhelmingly powerful mixed aroma of mold, moisture, and something midly sweet crashes against your nose, sending your head into a dizzy spin.
(Set: $Flood -= 1)
"It smells awful," Aidan yelped. You nod your head vigorously in agreement. The stench was nausiating.
"It smells like gas... or sewage," Shui says, as a visible shudder ripples through her body.
You and Aidan make eye contact at the same time, then both nod. You had gone the wrong way.
(if: $Flood >= 0)[You decide to [[turn back->Twists and Turns]] and head the way Shui had suggested.
[[Your not one for turning around!->Swept Away]] You keep going and hope it rounds back to where you're supposed to be.
]
(else:)[[[The water is rising way to fast! All you can do is run!->END: Doomsday]]]With a growing confidence, you stride along-side Aidan and Shui, Benji the dog is trotting happily behind you.
Slowly, you notice the water isn't quite as high anymore. It must have found a drain outlet somewhere. Everyone heaves a deep sigh of relief.
Up ahead, a spec of white light flashes in front of your eyes. Your heart rate picks up as you realise what it could be. It's the light of day. Well, it's actually more like a glittering collage of torrential rain and flood lights. Either way it meant freedom!
Thorougly soaked, cold, and so done with your underground tunnel adventure, you rush from the mouth of the tunnel, through the landscape of machinary and dirt, up the embankment, and onto safe ground.
Exhausted, you hand, the no longer as dirty, Benji over to Shui who looks as if she's about to cry with joy. With that you usher the lot of them from the Thorton Quarry and partially-constructed TARP system back towards home and dry warmth.
Mission accomplished, [[you head home yourself.->END: Save the Day]]Help does not arrive soon enough. That stormy night of bad lighting and flooding tunnels only leads to horrible nightmares of Shui's two lost companions, one with two and one with four legs.
You don't bother putting on the news to hear the latest tragedy. You have enough bad pictures in your head, and constantly question what else you could have done. You already know what it's going to say, flooding damage and lost lives, and it just makes the nightmares worse. The guilt plagues your consciousness everytime you go for a stroll through the neighborhood.
[[Perhaps it's time to move...->The End 3]]A few weeks later, you meet three of them on the same street, walking home from the two hour CTA trip from downtown. It's raining again.
Shui sees you and says, "Hey, we wanted to thank you properly!" Her face is split by a brilliant smile.
Adian beside her pats you on the back as you come up to them and Benji gives a happy bark of greeting. "Yeah, who knows what could have happened if you hadn't stuck it out with us."
It feels good to have helped someone, and at the end it was a thoroughly interesting adventure into Chicago's underground infrastructure. At the end of the evening, [[you all made it out alive.->The End 6]]Unfotunetly, the water level began to rise at an unhaltable rate. Leaving you, Aidan, Shui, and Benji trapped in the tunnels.
One of your last thoughts is that tomorrow's news report will be about more than just flooding basements and infrastructural damage. It isn't every day that a group of people gets trapped in TARP.
[[No one made it out alive.->The End 5]]It has been weeks since that dreadful night in the tunnels, and still you relive it every night in your dreams. You keep wondering: "What if your choices had been different?" "If only it hadn't been raining that night?"
Throughout those nightmares, a loyal, warm and fluffy body remains glued by your side. Shui's parents couldn't handle the thought of keeping him after what happened, and when you volunteered to take him, they took you up on your offer.
You have been through a lot with this dog. One could say it was a friendship forged in fire and turned to steel, but in reality there was too much water involved for that.
After yet another nightmare wakes you from your sleep, you decide it is time for a change.
[[Packing a backpack, and grabbing Benji's leash, you head to the nearest Chicago metra station. All you need is some supplies and man's best friend.->The End 4]]Sadly, pushing further into the darkness is more of a slow shuffle than a charge, the light beginning to completely vanish ten feet into the tunnel. One of your hands is gliding steadily along the damp wall when you hear a loud crash coming from either Aidan or Shui nearby.
You call out towards the two, just as Shui cries, "Aidan!"
Slowly, you make your way in the direction of her voice. "He's not moving or waking up!" she cries. You reach the source of the sound and crouch down to the ground where your adjusting eyes can see her form hunched over a prone body. "We need to get him to the light!"
With Shui's help, you carry the heavy, muscle-bound teenager back the way you had come. Reaching the stark lights of the floodlamps pointed onto the construction site did not paint a pretty picture. A large gash ran along the side of his forehead, bleeding profusely.
"He must have tripped over something," choked out Shui, tears streaming down her face.
You tell her to come quickly, as you make your way to the nearest payphone. [[All you can hope is that the ambulance comes quickly enough.->END: Lose A Friend]]After what seems like an age in torrential rain, Aidan calls out, "I think I found a generator! It's close to the tunnel, so perhaps it runs the tunnel lighting?"
(Set: $Flood to 10)
"We can only try, we're already breaking and entering. Throw the switch." Shui replied through slightly chattering teeth.
With a dramatic flick of his wrist, Aidan threw the switch. Low and behold small emergency lights began fluttering to life along the tunnel, casting a wan green glow upon the tunnelscape, but at least you can see.
[[On into the tunnels!->Into the Tunnels]]Afer clearing around a collection of mining tools and assorted toolboxes stacked against one side of the tunnel about 20 feet in, the rest of the tunnel was clear and stretched endlessly ahead. There was nothing else to do but walk forward.
(Set: $Flood -= 1)
"Benji!" called out Shui into the darkness.
"Benji! Come here, boy!" Aidan took up the call.Their cries echoing off the smooth tunnel walls.
Barely, from somewhere ahead came answering bark and quiet wimper.
(if: $Flood is >= 0)[Determination in your every step, [[you carry on.->Decision 8]]](else:)[[[The water is rising way too fast! All you can do is run!->END: Doomsday]]]The walk down the tunnel is relatively uneventful, though creepy with the sickly glow of lights and the occasional doggy whimper. The further in you go, however, the little puddle at the bottom of the tunnel grows. Far off in the distance you hear a faint rushing sound, as if a teacher is continuously shushing a loud student.
(Set: $Flood -= 1)
Finally you reach a three-way branch in the tunnel. Unfortunetly, Benji was not giving another tone from him at that moment.
(if: $Flood is >= 0)[
[[The right seems to have a mysterious pull that draws you into its depths.->Decision 8: Right]]

(Set: $Flood -= 1)
Both Aidan and Shui have noticed the same thing and look up at you with panic-stricken faces.
"We need to move faster," Aidan asserts, noticeable fear slipping into his tone. You and Shui nod in agreement and you all begin to pick up the pace, Benji almost paddling along behind them.
The water continues to rise, now creeping up as high as your hips.
Nobody is able to see where they're stepping, and even more concerning is that it's beginning to become a lot more difficult to wade through the water, slowing your progress down considerably.
(if: $Flood >= 0)[Determination in your every step, [[you carry on.->Swept Away Part 2]]](else:)[[[The water is rising way to fast! Shui and Aidan rush on ahead, as you are slowed down by leading the dog. The second they step out into the intersection, that roar harolds a major flush of water and they get swept away down a tunnel branch.
You cry out their names, but are met only with another rush of water and the threat of it rising further.
Reluctantly, you turn back and are forced to flee, following the lowest levels of water, and hoping firmly that you make it out.
And, there it is! The sickly glow of the long tunnel ends in a deluge of rain and flood lights. Quickly, you move away from the tunnel entrance and collapse to your knees, clutching the dog to your chest.
You can only hope for this all to be a nightmare as [[you struggle to your feet.->END: Mans Best Friend]]Now that the dog has been found, you still needed to make you way back through the tunnels. An atmosphere of slight panic was beginning to fill the air.
(Set: $Flood -= 1)
"I'm almost positive that we came from that way," Shui said pointing down the tunnel branch to her left.
It was the slight waver in her voice as she finshed her statement, a slight dip in her tone, that made it seem uncertain she knew where the group needed to go, though.
"I say we go this way," Aidan added, pointing down the opposite tunnel branch. "What do you say?" He added looking towards you for the final decision?

(Set: $Flood -= 1)
But, the occaisional whimper draws you ever closer towards where you fervently hope Benji is. Finally, you spot him. Relief washes over your entire body. You almost missed him, covered in muck and curled against the tunnel wall as he was. The higher water level here was terrifyingly close to consuming his head when you finally reach down and scoop up his lead, hugging it tightly to your chest.
