!!<center>Chapter One</center>
The excited cheers of Eleanor sing lullabies to your ears, the comfortable couch placed beneath you wanting nothing more but to drag you back to sleep. Your best friend had woken you up in a hurry, claiming that the biggest chess tournament of her life was about to begin and she needed you here for ‘good luck.’
Whether or not you were actually ‘good luck’... was a question you would get back to when it wasn't so early in the morning.
Especially when you had your first class of the day in god knows how many hours.
“Ellie?” You waited to continue until she tore her wide-eye stare from the moving screen- one that you didn't even try to bother watching. Chess is a complicated sport, and every time Eleanor tried to explain the pieces and how they moved, it would end in either one of you getting frustrated and quitting.
“Hm?” “What time is it?” Her green eyes narrow in distaste- you hate school just as much as the next person, but you still want to get your degree at the end of the year. You had made a promise; to your father that his money, your constant breakdowns over homework, and the pleading extension emails on projects you procrastinated on never go to waste.
“I don’t know, $nickname” She rolls her eyes in annoyance, returning her attention to the screen with more interest. You never understood why, but Eleanor always seemed irritated when you focused more on your schoolwork instead of doing other things. Continually insisting that school is never leaving, but your early 20s will, so you should- ‘live your life to the fullest now.’
*[[You wish she wouldn't pressure you so much.|ch1 pg2][$eapproval -=5, $sensitiveUnbothered +=5]]
*[[You don't think about it enough to care.|ch1 pg2][$sensitiveUnbothered -=5]]
“I mean.. you did lie to me.” “How was I supposed to know <<if $enowork eq true or $enomoney eq true>> my family was gonna need help!” <<elseif $enotextbook eq true>> I was gonna lose that book!” <</if>> The situation has been brought up before, always in a joking manner, of course, but today.. there was some sort of underlying tension between the words.
You couldn’t tell if it was on your side or hers.
Ellie crossed her arms with a ‘hmph’, an irritated look furrowing her eyebrows as she realized the chess game had still been going on. You could tell she was about to quietly curse by the way her chin moved to set in her palm, fingers subtly covering the cigarette-shaped hole in her mouth.
A poor attempt, really.

“Why do you even, like, I don’t know… pay attention to college so much?”<<if $sensitiveUnbothered gt 50>> Her words pull at your lips, forming a small frown. You’ve told her before to stop subjecting you to her many complaints, but Eleanor, unfortunately, doesn’t know when to just.. quit. It made you uncomfortable, knowing that someone was judging you for living out the life you wanted to live. “It was, I just... I made a promise to my dad.” Your voice trails off quietly.<<elseif $sensitiveUnbothered lt 50>> You shrug at her question, tapping your fingers against the sidearm of the couch. You stopped being bothered by those types of jabs a long time ago, after knowing Eleanor for 3 years... it became just one of those quirks you got used to. “Promised my dad I wouldn’t waste his money…” The words trail off into a silent statement. <</if>>
“And you know how I feel about promises.”
Hearing a snort come from your right side, you turn slightly to give the redhead a curious stare.
“Yeah.. trust me $nickname, I know.”
You continue giving that same blank-eyed look, which draws her attention after a certain amount of time. She raises her eyebrows, now confused, until a look of astonishment passes through her face, her mouth opening up into a round ‘O’ to let out a surprised gasp. “Don’t tell me you forgot!” A loud cackle escapes- leading to a random burst of energy where she starts to recap the story (very dramatically) of how you guys first met.
It was because…
*[[You were partnered for a project, she promised to do her side. She didn't do it.|ch1 pg3][$enowork=true]]
*[[You were in the same class, she lost her textbook and promised to give yours back if you let her use it. She lost your textbook aswell.|ch1 pg3][$enotextbook=true]]
*[[She needed money for lunch, she promised she'd buy you some when she got paid. She never did.|ch1 pg3][$enomoney=true]]
<<if $enowork eq true>> You ended up staying all night to complete it, refusing to get a horrible grade due to her laziness. Eleanor claimed a conflict between her family had sprung up, and that it needed her immediate attention.
Sure, she apologized profusely after seeing the aftermath of an all-nighter… but no amount of concealer would be able to hide the eyebags that weighed heavily on your heart. You wanted to know what happened. To help.
<<elseif $enotextbook eq true>> When you discovered she lost it, many free hours were wasted investigating with her. You were pissed. Really, really, pissed. The fee for a lost book was not something you were happily paying- nobody ever was!!
It was even more annoying when Eleanor practically avoided searching her house, the one place where it was most likely hidden. Often yelling that it was off-limits and a waste of time.
<<elseif $enomoney eq true>> You were a little bummed when she said she couldn’t buy you lunch after you asked for repayment. You were practically salivating at the fresh food that stared back. Nothing would deter her from getting rid of that debt, not even the loud sounds emitted from your stomach.
All she had in excuse for herself was that all her money needed to be spent towards helping her family.
<</if>>\
<<if $enowork eq true>> She never told you. <<elseif $enotextbook eq true or $enomoney eq true>> She never told you why.<</if>>
No matter what you said or did, or even how often you begged and pleaded.
She left you drowning in an ocean of conflict. Your head was barely above water as waves rolled over one another, teaming up to quickly bite back whatever curiosity you had left in your bones. And naturally, that feeling went away after you became friends- but nothing could make you forget the way your heartbeat seemed to match the shaking of her legs.
<span class="next"><<button "Next" "ch1 pg4">><</button>></span>“$name!”
You pause, your mouth frozen in an open position. Shifting to press against the couch, you meet the near-fiery glare of Eleanor. “I wasn’t even gonna say anything!” She puts her hand on her hips, an eyebrow-raising in a way that says she’s calling out your bullshit,
There’s this uncomfortable silence that stretches like a bungee rope.
Until finally, you cave.
“Fine, okay! You just never told me what happened!” You throw your hands in the air, standing up<<if $height eq 'very tall'>> to look down on her. <<elseif $height eq 'tall'>> to look her in the eye. <<elseif $height eq 'average' or $height eq 'short' or $height eq 'very short'>> to look up at her. <</if>> You didn’t think it’d escalate to a heated argument, you genuinely didn’t know why it bothered her so much.
What’s so bad in wanting to help your best friend?
“Oh my god, $name! Just drop it, would you? I don’t want to talk about it right now.”
“It's been //three// years-”
<span class="next"><<button "RIIIIINNGGGG" "ch1-phone">><</button>></span>All this talking has exhausted you more than not getting enough sleep. The shiny black coffee maker stares at you from across the room, an expensive reflection pulling you towards it.
You give in, deciding that it's best to leave Eleanor in this state instead of trying to remedy it and only escalating it more.
You walk behind the grey sofa, avoiding blocking the view of the lasting chess game. Lord knows what would happen if you happened to walk in front of the television right as a player calls checkmate, basically shielding what could've been the "greatest play ever".. in Eleanor's terms.
The machine sits next to the stove, stationed there as a morning reminder to get caffeine intake while making breakfast. Your whole schedule has been changed, and frankly, you haven't got a clue how much time you have left until you need to leave for classes.
Opening up the cabinet where flavored pods gather, you search for your favorite one, and after a few seconds end up empty-handed. That simply won't do. You could've sworn you had stocked up on the flavor before the stash was off the shop walls- and so your hand begins adventuring into the depths of the walled cabinet.
"Ellie, have you seen my coffee pods?" Your voice is slightly strained with the effort of aimlessly shoveling items around.
"No, you know I prefer tea." She responds after a few minutes and you roll your eyes, now giving up on the task at hand a little bit upset. Your hands grip the counter edge, now trying to recall your trip to the grocery store two weeks back.
"Hey, $nickname, your phones ringing off the walls."
"Who's calling?"
"Uhh, no one. It's an alarm, something about needing to leave." That snaps you out of your head, body now sharply turning to stare at Eleanor.
"You're kidding! I thought I still had another hour. Did you turn off my alarms or something?" You didn't want to accuse her of doing that, of course, but she complains every chance she gets about how sensitive her ears are.
And you made sure your alarms were set the night before.
<<if $eapproval gt 79>> “I’m sorry- I didn’t think it was.. important.” <<elseif $eapproval lt 79>> “You left your door open, they were annoying. It's not like it's important. ” <</if>>

*[[Stare at her in shock|ch1-after phone][$choice3=true]]<<if $playphone is true>> Your eyes glance around, landing on your phone. Seeing the familiar case brings memories of what you were originally asking about.
Picking up the phone, you tap twice, waiting for the time to pop up.
“Oh shit!”
You jump to your feet, nearly knocking over the lamp standing nearby as your feet kiss the fluffy carpet. Ellie whips around in surprise, almost as shocked as you are at your sudden outburst. <</if>> <<if $brokenpromise is true or $studyher is true >> You both turn to look at your ringing phone, the familiarity of it causing you to snatch the device up. <</if>> “I have class in like.. fuck! Did you mess with my alarms or something?! It’s almost my 5-minute warning!” You frantically pull down on the screen, disarming the <<if $playphone is false>> second <</if>> sound bomb thats a few minutes away from exploding.
<<if $eapproval gt 79>> “I’m sorry- I didn’t think it was.. important.” <<elseif $eapproval lt 79>> “You left your door open, they were annoying. It's not like it's important. ” <</if>>

*[[Take a few calming breaths|ch1-after phone][$choice2=true, $composureAgitation +=3]]
*[[Stare at her in shock|ch1-after phone][$choice3=true]]You watch the whole process, from when she first thought of that singular curse world, up until she let the word die on her pretty lips. Eleanor was strange, she had constant mood swings- which isn't necessarily a bad thing. <<if $gender is 'woman'>> Hey, you had them too when it came down to that particular time of the month. <</if>> But it started changing into a problem when she would get so stressed out that everything suddenly became //your// fault.
No one else, expect //you//. You've never asked, but a part of you is naturally curious about if it's just target practice for something else.
She rarely apologizes about it, unfortunately.
Her green eyes turn to look at you, now having a defensive shield to combat your keen look. You don't necessarily move, but there is a hesitant shift back in case another famous explosion is on the near horizon.
"Do you need something?" A surge of hostility powers through her words, similar to a dragon trying to torch you alive.
"Maybe." "Maybe?" She huffs a dramatic one, but still a huff nonetheless. Her once straight back falls curved into the couch, arms crossed over aggressively.
"Like, just literally ask me what you want to instead of staring at me like some perverted creep."
<span class="next"><<button "RIIIIINNGGGG" "ch1-phone">><</button>></span><<if $choice1 is true >> “You-you can’t just do something like that! Are you- god... I can’t believe this!” Your face flushes, embarrassment over the stutter nearly overriding the anger at the stunt she pulled. All motions speed up, now practically lunging for your room door to begin hurriedly grabbing an outfit and stuffing the stationary backup full of the books sitting at your desk.
“I just, I just don’t understand Eleanor!” Your voice is muffled, by the closet door, the sound of hangers colliding resonates throughout the room. Ruffling the $style clothes to get all the wrinkles out, you put them on like it's an Olympic sport.
<<if $eapproval gt 79>> The apologetic frown on her face subdued some of the frustration, your actions having less of a force to them and more speed. <<elseif $eapproval lt 79>> The fact that she wasn’t even apologetic about it added fuel to the fire of your frustration, actions now creating more of a force instead of hasty speed. <</if>> The heavy backpack swings over tight shoulders, the jingling of keys like nails on chalkboard as you grab them from the tupperwear standing next on your nightstand.
“I know you don’t actually like to go to college and listen or whatever the fuck it is you do, but that doesn’t mean you can mess with my schedule! How is going to the classes, that I’ve paid for, not important!” <<elseif $choice2 is true>> You can feel the anger building up inside, gripping at your throat, demanding to be let out. But you don’t let it, you push it down, burying it underneath the stomach acid burning in the lining of your body. A small breath leaves your mouth, a calming exhale.
“Okay, what we’re gonna do is leave this talk till I get back from school so I don’t blow up in your face.” A pained smile paints your face, a passive-aggressive thumbs-up mailed her way as you back up towards your room.
You hear her grumbles of disapproval from behind you. “Eleanor! I’m trying to not yell at you right now. Don’t push it.” The silence contrasts the sound of hangers colliding with each other as you shuffle through the outfit options. Ruffling up some random $style clothes, you put them on like it’s an Olympic sport.
<<if $eapproval gt 79>> The apologetic frown on her face you saw earlier subdued some of the already low frustration, your actions having less of a force to them and more speed. <<elseif $eapproval lt 79>> The fact that she wasn’t even apologetic about it added fuel to the fire of your frustration, actions now creating more of a force instead of hasty speed. You were trying to stay calm, for the benefit of everyone.<</if>> The heavy backpack swings over tight shoulders, the jingling of keys like nails on chalkboard as you grab them from the keyholder standing next to your nightstand.
“Look, I know you don’t agree, or whatever, with my schooling. But that doesn’t mean you can just, mess with my schedule because all you do is party and shit. Respect that I would love to have a good education, please.” <<elseif $choice3 is true>> You actually don't know what to feel right now. the only emotion in your system that operates appropriately is shock. You stare at her, practically frozen, phone in hand, eyes wide with disbelif.
"Well, are you going to say something?!" The way she speaks makes it feel like you're the one who did wrong, like you were the one to sneak into her room and turn off the very things keeping you from being late to an important day in school.
Your eye almost twitches, you swear you can feel the blood pumping to your ears. "I don't even know what to say right now.."
"Well think about it while you get ready, the way you're staring at me is giving me the creeps."
That's enough to get your body moving towards your room, almost in slow-motion, until everything comes crashing down on you at once and you're running like a snail on speed.
Closet doors swing open, hands grab at clothes, keys, and whatever other materials are necessary for class. You hurriedly walk through the door, trying to gather your mind on what to do and how to do it.
"I thought you'd be more upset." The distant voice of Eleanor makes you pause, before continuining to pack books and papers. "I am mad! I'm just more shocked that you had the audacity to do that and not even wake me up! You can't just go around and start trying to affect my life because you don't give a crap about your future."
You didn't mean to blow up, but the way there isn't an ounce of regret in her scheming eyes is going to send you flying off a cliff.
<</if>>
“That was a low blow $name” Ellie’s <<if $eapproval gt 79>> dejected voice mimics one of a hurt puppy, nearly causing a clash with the kitchen island as you turn to see her rejection. <<elseif $eapproval lt 79>> pitch begins to match the wavelength of yours, nearly causing a clash with the kitchen island as you turn to see her annoyance. <</if>>

I’m sorry, it was uncalled for.” You hear Eleanor’s hum of approval, who now decides she just wants to flat-out ignore you and go back to watching that boring chess game. <<elseif $choice5 is true>> “Don’t act like you weren’t the one who turned off my alarms! It was deserved and you know it.” Eleanor grumbles in reply, deciding to just ignore everything going on and zone back into the chess game. You don’t even know if you should take that as a win or not. <<elseif $choice6 is true>> “Yeah okay, whatever. I’m sorry! But it’s not like you weren’t the one who turned off the alarms I need for school.” Eleanor grunts in semi-disapproval, now deciding to just sit back down on the couch and continue watching the chess game. The argument seems to stay at a standstill. <</if>>
Jerking the fridge door open, your stomach rumbles unhappily in response to the bare shelves.
“Eleanor, roomie, you were supposed to go grocery shopping yesterday.”
“You can’t just give me chores without telling me about them.”
“You literally said you would.”
