The Catholic feast day of Corpus Christi is very special to me. My parish started doing Corpus Christi processions through the neighborhood when I was 12 or so, and every year since then I've served as the Thurifer for the event (mainly because I was the only altar server who liked being around incense). Some elements in this story are directly taken from these experiences*. \n\nI know when a lot of people hear the word "ritual" they immediately think of dark cults and human sacrifice, but there's definitely more than that. A Corpus Christi procession is probably the most ritualistic one can get, and it takes place in broad daylight on a Summer Sunday. However, the ritual may seem pretty bizarre to someone who hasn't grown up with it. I tried to play on this a little by focusing on the names of liturgical things in the writing. These are not everyday terms, and using them so frequently may give a sense of mystery and even unease. (All those names are 100% words by the way. Look 'em up.)\n\nI think it's neat to take time and appreciate the "lifestyle rituals" or "community rituals" that we have in order to maintain structure in our lives. I feel like everybody has their own favorite personal ritual, whether it be sacrificing a goat or something as simple as having 3 meals a day. Find your favorite ritual.
